I didn't think I could have any less respect for the institutional Catholic church, but they keep setting new lows. This is simply appalling.

The Catholic Church is known for its poor treatment of its workers (I know someone who's taught in Catholic schools for 30 years, and I make more on unemployment than she does in her weekly paycheck) and since the Church climbed into bed with the American right wing some decades back, they've dropped any pretense that they're applying the spirit of Jesus' teachings:

Employees at Catholic Charities were told Monday that the social services organization is changing its health coverage to avoid offering benefits to same-sex partners of its workers -- the latest fallout from a bitter debate between District officials trying to legalize same-sex marriage and the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

Starting Tuesday, Catholic Charities will not offer benefits to spouses of new employees or to spouses of current employees who are not already enrolled in the plan. A letter describing the change in health benefits was e-mailed to employees Monday, two days before same-sex marriage will become legal in the District.

"We looked at all the options and implications," said the charity's president, Edward J. Orzechowski. "This allows us to continue providing services, comply with the city's new requirements and remain faithful to the church's teaching."

Catholic Charities, which receives $22 million from the city for social service programs, protested in the run-up to the council's December vote to allow same-sex marriage, saying that it might not be able to continue its contracts with the city, including operating homeless shelters and facilitating city-sponsored adoptions. Being forced to recognize same-sex marriage, church officials said, could make it impossible for the church to be a city contractor because Catholic teaching opposes such unions.

After the council voted to legalize gay marriage, Catholic Charities last month transferred its foster-care program -- 43 children, 35 families and seven staff members -- to another provider, the National Center for Children and Families.

Orzechowski said Monday that the change in health benefits will be the last move necessary in response to the legislation.

"We do not anticipate any further changes whatsoever," he said. "Taking the action we have on foster care and spousal we feel has addressed everything the new law requires of us."

Maybe this wouldn't stick in my craw so much if they'd taken the same "principled" stand against the Church's numerous child abusers and pedophiles -- before the multi-million dollar payouts, I mean.

Christanity is at core a hate cult, a death cult predicated upon resentment, deriving its core ideologies from the need to overthrow the occupational armies of Rome through propaganda -- which is somewhat ironic since their "jesus" mythos was Hellenized and adopted a young male lover sex toy as was common for Romans to do at the time.

Christianity is abjectly evil but its *own* standards.

..little of gay people and that they should be put to death as they say in the bible, do you think they all kill their disobedient children as the bible says, or kill their wives if they aren't virgins on the wedding night as the bible says or stone the women who adorn themselves as the bible says..(thanks Dan Savage, your interview with KO on the subject was eye-opening). But no, no one is going to do that in modern times are they? There wouldn't be much of a church if they did.

You know, the church at one time didn't believe in a heliocentric solar system. Then one day, Copernicus proved that the Sun was the center of the solar system and eventually the church just had to agree. I wonder what the sunrise looked like before the church was corrected? Hmmmm......(and thank you James Burke).

they are not discriminating between hetro or homosexuals. There policies are even across the board. But even if they were why should it be illegal? For myself I don't care if a person is straight or gay for the most part. But if I as an employer (I'm not but I'm working on it) choose to hire or insure who I choose, why should that be illegal?

fiver's picture

. . . and can claim a religious exemption, you have to obey the same laws as the rest of us, and that includes not discriminating based on specified bases in your public life.

Don't worry, the hypothetical "you" will still have plenty of opportunity to legally discriminate on most any basis in his private life, just not his public one.

An interesting question, though. If individuals can discriminate, can churches? What about private corporations? Do the laws against discrimination apply ONLY to governmental institutions?

Timjoebillybob's picture

apply to only the gov, but I feel they should. As a white male I have been discriminated against, the only time I've had a problem with it was when I was turned down for a promotion because they had to promote a minority. I was told and this is verbatim that the reason I wasn't promoted was "they had to promote a woman or a minority" they agreed that I was better qualified for the promotion but they had to promote someone else because of racial issues.

Just because you have an opinion does not mean it is correct. Name something private that, without a governmental connection (funding, for example) is ruled by anti-discrimination laws? This is the same mentality that thinks because a restaurant is open to the public that they cannot keep certain people out.

Timjoebillybob's picture

have seen, there was a coffee shop that was hit by a lawsuit for anti minority practices. The name of the place was Karls Korner Koffe. He had a sign on the door saying "******s not welcome" He didn't refuse service to them but he preferred them not to come to his location. While I don't agree with him, I do agree with his right to not allow blacks into his business.

Liberalicious's picture
Yet

you WHINE when YOU feel you are discriminated again? But it's somehow okay for someone to do that against blacks as it does not affect you, whether you agree with it or not. Facisnating.

Timjoebillybob's picture

I don't whine when it happens to me. I can care less if a business decides to discriminate against me because of my skin color or my religion or anything else. That is their choice, I do care when that choice is made by the gov.

Liberalicious's picture

maybe whine was a bit strong, but you still think it's unfair, when it happens to just you. And not others.

BTW, use the expression correctly...it's "couldn't care less". Just FYI.

Timjoebillybob's picture
Yes

I do feel its unfair. It doesn't matter if it's me or someone else. When the Gov decides who get promotions based on race or sex yes that is unfair. Again I don't care if it happens because of company policy, but if it happens because of Gov policy then that is a totally different story.

BTW I wrote it correctly, as did you. Both are acceptable although mine is more so.

Liberalicious's picture

Could NOT care less, means there is no way to care any less about a subject. Could care less, makes no sense...if you could care less, then why don't you? Makes no sense. As for your argument that the government cannot not discriminate, but individuals can, that makes no sense also.

Timjoebillybob's picture

Do have anything to argue about other than my grammar? Honesstly can you argue the points I'm making?

savannah43's picture

It is illegal for the government to discriminate. Regardless of your feelings about it.
And, if you "could care less," it means that you have some feelings about the topic. It is the opposite of "couldn't care less," which means you have NO feelings about the topic.

ricky's picture

Misinterpretation of how to implement Affirmative Action policy and incompetence by hiring personnel causes what you complain about.

Either "they" all told you you were passed over for promotion in favor of another in the name of affirmative action because they didn't want to tell you that you did not deserve the promotion. Or "they" were as stupid themselves as you are demonstrating yourself to be in this discussion.

I worked for was required to promote a certain percentage of females and minorities. I worked in a casino as a craps dealer. I spent 2 months learning the game they rushed her though an 8 hr class to get her qualified. There was another supervisor they did the same thing for, he was worthless on the craps table. I actually enjoyed messing with him, he would call the pit supervisors over on a regular occasion because of what I was doing, they all came down on my side, although one of them did ask me not to do it anymore because it caused him problems.

ricky's picture

You did not get promoted because "you actually enjoyed messing" with bosses you felt were inferior to you and in a superior position over you based on race. It is called bigotry, racism, and it's counterpruductive. Bigots cause problems period, but big ones when in supervisory positions.

How many of those "pit bosses" who all came down on your side were white males who shared your view about incompetent women or minorities?

The biggest problem with affirmative action is the excuse it gives white men to deny their own failure to succeed and blame it on others.

I sure hope you don't have a pilot's license. Bet you gotta gun permit though.

messing with was white. And I didn't enjoy messing with him because of his promotion. I enjoyed it because the first time he sat box on the table I was dealing at he gave me crap about paying the field with my inside hand. Dealers are "supposed" to pay the field with their outside hand, but I had a known cheater right next to me and I would of had to turn my back to him to do so. And I would rather watch him directly rather than in the mirror.

Timjoebillybob's picture

they were inferior to me, the lady that was promoted was excellent on roulette. She just didn't know craps well enough to be sitting box. But they needed another supervisor who knew craps so they rushed her through a quick class. I was very nice to her and helped her out. Because she knew she wasn't qualified to be sitting box and didn't give me a hard time about petty stuff. The couple of times I worked as a mucker on her roulette table I didn't try to tell her how to deal it, because she knew a hell of a lot more than me on that game. She knew I knew more on craps so she didn't try to tell me how to deal it.

And yes I have a license to carry, a lifetime one as a matter of fact.

I paid out bets in a creative manner that was it, he just couldn't follow the payouts. I did the same thing with every other supervisor, heck I did it more with ones that could follow what I was doing. I actually took it easy on the guy I was messing with. Although the one that asked me not to do it with this guy did threaten to write me up for it once when I was on his table. He said I know what your doing, but they eye in the sky can't follow it, if I get a call from them I'm going to write you up for making me explain to them what your doing.

But if he chooses to operate a public diner, then he has to obey the laws governing such an operation - including laws protecting the public safety and interest. It's his choice.

The bottom line to this particular one is that the employer gets to not give someone a promotion and still have that employee redirect any resentment, not at the employer that denied the promotion, but at those horribly powerful women or minorities. Convenient?

Who got the job BTW? A woman or a minority? 'Cause it doesn't seem like the employer would naturally reference both regarding only one specific instance.

"balls" that had me believing there was both Republicans (who have balls) and thinking (because that's the organ dominating the process) involved here. I forgot that the impact of testosterone on Republicans is due to involuntary muscle action, not thought. "Think" and "Republican" are mutually esclusive and, again, there were just too many balls in the air for me not to get slapped upside the head.

Sorry fellas. It won't happen again.

When I was an undergraduate, I worked the night-shift at a major Chicago Hotel on Michigan ave. Each year in August we'd get this Conservative women's organization's convention for a long weekend. The demands for porn would be incredible from these Christian ladies during their stay.

Another reason to stop giving money and going to churches. Going to church may be familiar and comforting, but this demonstrates the non adherence to the scripture that they supposedly represent. Therefore, even the social aspects of churches, which are their only redeeming quality, are decrepit.

This is a MUST read, about Prince's Catholic Connection.

If you recall, the Catholics and the Evangelicals have joined together in their hatred of gays, abortion, and are closerthanthis with Dobson's Focus on the Family and Family Research Council.Prince as a very young man was an intern for Gary Bauer at the original Family Research Council,at that time headed by Gary Bauer.(His family donated seed money to Bauer to create the FRC.)There is a group entitled ECT-Evangelical and Catholics Together,of whom Prince is now a member.

And it is not coincidence that Focus on the Family has a tie to the lawyer that TelePimp O'Keefe has representing him for trying to manipulate Mary Landrieu's telephones in New Orleans.

O'Keefe had punked Planned Parenthood with a call offering to donate money to abort black fetuses.

Funny they never took a step to prevent their pedophile clergy from receiving health insurance.

"When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims - religion. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! ...but he loves you!"

So how come it was OK to take tax money from gay for years. Becasue the tax money they received would have been collected for straight and gay.

Oh, yeah and about this pedophile prients, they pay taxes too and that was also in the tax pool.

feed the hungry if D.C. recognized gay marriages. They're bullies who have none of the compassion that Jesus had. Shame on them!

When it can truly be said "they've dropped any pretense that they're applying the spirit of Jesus' teachings," that will be news indeed.

They may have forfeited the right to maintain the pretense -- in this instance certainly -- but the pretense is as vigorious as ever.

But that's not the end of the story. While the Church's stand on gays is wicked, it is bad news for the neighborhood -- including its large gay population -- that St. Vincent's hospital in Manhattan is closing.

That was where my closest friend, gay and Jewish, died in 1990, of AIDS. It was a Catholic Hospital that cared for him in that hour. I loved him, but did I do as much for him?

These are the same people who will fight to the death to insure that every blastocyst and embryo has a right to life... but once past the birth canal, the hell with them.

If these pious frauds think they're going to heaven, someone with a tail and a pitchfork is going to have the last laugh.

I've been a catholic ny whole life, I've become more and more disillusioned, don't go to church anymore but really didn't have too much trouble calling myself catholic when asked about my religious beliefs, no matter how agnostic I always was.
Until now.
When priests were exposed again in the scandals a few tears back I realized then that not all priests were guilty and the church powerful were to blame for coverups. But, I had seen the church do more through charity in the inner cities that many give them credit for.
When John-Paul died a few years ago and it was time for the cardinals to elect a successor they chose the conservative route, they started pushing back on 'select' politicians on 'select' issues (read: democrats/abortion/gay marriage) and not others (read: republicans-war/dealth penalty/poverty).
Now that charity is on the chopping block in order to compete for conservative asshole membership with evengelicals I really can't stand for it anymore. I've always had my own seperate views on abortion and gay marriage but knew parrish priests who would tell me that my faith (weak as it was) was not challenged by those beliefs, now I am the enemy.

given to CC by the Office of Faith Based--whatever. 100 million--why not the Red Cross? One would think if you were getting 100 MILLION dollars from the U.S. Government, and were still tax-exempt some rules would apply. You can be dammned sure the name on the bus that pulls up to the disaster doesn;t say U.S. Taxpayer--it says Catholic Charities--continuing to pull the wool over peoples eyes--pretending it's their money.

If you can't spell benefits. Neither do you.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

The city government should immediately end the charity contracts with these bigots and give them to some actual charitable organizations!
