Cokie says she finds the screaming, angry people at healthcare town hall meetings "unpleasant." She "doesn't know how we got here" and wonders if it doesn't have to do with...

The lack of nuns. No, really. That's what she said.

Right, Cokie. Because it couldn't possibly have been orchestrated by the many powerful and monied interests opposing healthcare reform! It couldn't possibly be the logical fruition of the years of poison seeds sown by the Republican party and their powerful allies.

What a dope. Sister Francis Bernadine (my homeroom teacher) would have smacked her across the head for not paying attention.

...when we need her to whack some peepees?

I don't need her, I've been whacking my own for years!

So sad. Now the pope didn't send enough nuns to keep order in town hall meetings.

You shouldn't blame this mess on the pope, Cokie. It's really just not his problem.

I think that this is Cokies way of telling us that she is a Pastafarian. Doesn't this sound suspiciously like "the reason for global warming is lack of pirates"?

Having solved another mystery I'm off to the stripper factory!

Well, maybe not, being stupid and obtuse pays her just as well as talking truth to power. Why not just be a lackey and rake in the dough?

"Unpleasant?" Clearly, she's no fun at gossip sessions. In the immortal words of Patsy on "Absolutely Fabulous," "She's afraid to sit on a chair for fear she'd suck it up."

well, evidently cookie succeeded at her
course in stupidity and failed at intellect
and or awareness of civility.
her depends must be soaked by now, time to
change them, they are no longer a flotation devise.

...

Sounds like the old nag is ready for the glue factory.

The teabaggers, authoritarian boot-lickers that they are would have loved the nuns.

of a role model until the mid-late 80s. I am thankful that I DID wake up earlier than most.

..

Cokie is just the best example of what has happened to NPR in general.

Cokie is not representative of where she once worked, and NPR has not so much gone downhill as it has tried to remain neutral whilst only reporting and one must admit, tis hard in these polarized times to do so. I do still enjoy NPR for its news coverage. Cokie is just someone trying to stay relevant in an increasingly corporatized rightwing echo chamber and sounding increasingly more ridiculous as she does so

Don't feel bad, I was just about right there with you. I think something changed about her and I don't know what it was. She seems to have hit a road block of stupid.

insurance company will dump her.

:PY

Just looking at the contents of that round table make me sick.

How can people listen to these fake, scripted corporate whores every God-loving Sunday?

Like you, I have no idea how anybody could listen to these shills pimping their Luddite and subversive garbage. They sold their soul to the company till long ago.

So therefore I don't. I listen to the classical music station on our cable TV network.

I just watched that entire clip. Let's see, you've got Cokie waxing nostalgic about nuns, while Matthew Dowd compares the healthcare debate to Iraq. If stupid could be a power source, that panel would be the equivalent of Three Mile Island.

spewing her voluminous noxious gases.

Or the Perfect Storm

Looks like Sam and Cokie have been shopping at the same hair piece store. That or Cokie's keeping George Will's hairpiece warm while he's away.

was the parochial rat. "Sister, sister, Hilliary is chewing gum . . ."

their slithering around every where.

Whats the point of this sh*t?

Other then try to get through life on this hellhole without getting eaten, killed, or disposed of like a piece of trash at this point?

Get 'em. I would say, "You go girl," but I never use that expression.

One policy involves killing and the other involves healing.

Really a nice parallel considering how diametrical the two things are.

And of course the issue of the town halls where there is no similarity. The democrats allow openness.
the republicans had closed town halls. people were kicked out or arrested if even suspected of being opponents

YP:

Full disclosure: I have a Cokie problem.

lol

I like it.
And to think she used to be my..wait for it.. "Heroine"

3P:

Her comments had me a little tweaked.

So tweaked I had to lay my head on some ice.

The cold eventually sent my head into a state of ecstasy.

?

Somebody should SMACK her upside the head!

These pompous asses are a joke , absolute fools. How on earth can they stay employed ? Definitely a sign of the times and the trouble this country is in .

Don't you understand? We need them to interoperate for us what the pols are saying and doing because we, the little outside the beltway people, are too stupid to figure it out for ourselves.

If they simply chose five posters from this website and sat us around the table for a little chit-chat....

Now THAT would be "must-see teevee".

Not quite. They are simply paid shills.
They are big fat LIARS.

Got

another?

:PQ

That's what I missed by not going to catholic school!?

Back in the day I had by back side whupped by several nuns, but I never derived any sexual pleasure from it.
All of those old gals were fat and ugly. If there had been a "keeper" among them to pass out the punishment we would have been standing in line for our turn.

According to my Catholic girlfriends from around 1966, the nuns taught them that if you hold a kiss longer than seven seconds it's a sin.

Next time you kiss somebody....time it. Then feel the guilt.

Oh boy.

Yep

The first few steps to de-programing yourself is to turn guilt into pleasure.
Next comes fear........if you think that you or your loved ones will be punished for your transgressions against their dogma you will never be free. Guilt is a state of mind, we cannot enjoy life if we become stuffed shirts like Pat Bucannan, and Bill Donahue.
THINK FOR YOURSELF.....develop strong critical thinking skills along with a healthy dose of skeptisism and you will be free to enjoy life without fear and guilt.
A little off subject but I speak from personal experience.

)O(

But I think it's guilt that plays to kink.

Once you no longer feel naughty doing something, you look for something naughtier to do.

You bad boy... whip that smile off your face. :)

..couldn't Congress have just voted to put everyone not covered on a corporate health care plan so that the uninsured can get screwed like the insured. High costs, interference betweem patient and doctor from Corporate bean-counters, procedure denials, etc.
That way, everybody's happy: Obama gets health care reform and pleases the corportations in one big swoop. Corporations have health care in this country in a stranglehold and no one ever gets better (or is it weller?). The GOP and Blue Dogs also please their corporate masters. Everybody wins! Everybody but the public!
I was hoping for change and this ain't it!

marketing slogans and buzzwords and phrases.

Considering the other choice . . we still deserve what we get.

Ughhhhhh

coverage for all.

is getting too much coke.

KP:

She must be sharing it with Peggy Noonan.

)O(

...Nun of that. Nonetheless I like the idea, from a civil viewpoint. Though don't be mistaken, I'm sure the "No" crowd has quite a few Nuns in the background.(Not to be confused with "Sam Nunn") ;)

"What a dope. Sister Francis Bernadine (my homeroom teacher) would have smacked her across the head for not paying attention."

That sounds rather oxymoronic, considering the context. :)

.

"Duuuuhhherrrr..."

I hope Cokie has somebody to tell her to come inside when it's raining.

but as I grow older, I notice that the intelligence quotient of the country of my birth is dropping yearly by it's square...

I have, long ago, left the "Land of the ignorant and home of the stupid" for a place where education and humanity mean everything.

When I visit or shop in our largest town and port, I keep my eyes open for 'murican tourists, and even cross the streets to keep completely up wind from them... I don't know if stupidity and ignorance are contagious or not, but I am not taking any chances....

Your "News" these days could be used to wrap fish, except it might contaminate the fish, your broadcast media is garbage, and will remain garbage until you line up, and shoot every other one of these dumb airheaded sons of bitches at least thee levels deep.... Sure would clean up the gene pool...

I have given up on the country of my birth, I am much more proud of gaining French Nationality, at least they have a modicum of common sense (plus much better health and medical provisions for the common citizen).

Personally this old retired Navy Chief believes that the only way you will get back on track is to start killin the Fascists who are spreading all the stupidity and hatred in your country

It's just taking a while.

Took a while. In 1960 we were number 1 in literacy, worldwide. Now we're around #47. Here's a great example:

This came from Rumor Mill News...

A DC airport ticket agent offers some examples of 'why' our country is in
trouble!

1.I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman (Carol Shea-Porter) ask for an aisle seat
so that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window. (On an
airplane!)

2.I got a call from a Kansas Congressman's (Moore) staffer (Howard Bauleke), who
wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the
passport information, and then he interrupted me with, ''I'm not trying to make
you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts .''
Without trying to make him look stupid, I calmly explained, ''Cape Cod is in
Massachusetts , Capetown is in Africa ''
his response -- click.

[Deleted. Too long. You are welcome to post 3 paragraphs and a link to the source-Sitemonitor]

I don't write it, I just offer it for your consideration. Like manure, you just
gotta spread it around.

congresspeople dont make their own reservations

'Rumor Mill News' is right. Very suspect, and totally anecdotal. No proof involved.

nuff said

I get to hear Sen. Sanders on Thom Hartman every Friday. He's a smart dude, and my favorite Senator. I hope Franken has been following him around. Sanders is the closest thing we've got to a Wellstone right now.

Best Republican strategy: Well, all politicians are stupid/crooked/as bad as Republicans.

Bubble-head? ;)

E7

Put on the Hat in 64 and retired out in 74

Surface, but spent almost half of my Career in the Mobile Technicial Units working on all kinds and classes of ships for us and the SEATO Group. Immigrated to Tahiti in 77, and became French in 84, 2nd best honor ever bestowed upon me (1st being appointed as CPO)

just like the bush/gore protests....these are all organized by repuke and big insurance operatives

its disgusting how the msm falls down on the job everytime

The lack of nuns comment was meant to be a joke but
it was also meant to distract from reality
which is...don't go there...
let us not mention that these grass root
average folks at town hall meetings are
thug liars4hire sent there by the
RNC. They are not sent to demonstrate
outside like the democrats did, they are
sent to go inside and disrupt and do a little violence
like back in 2000 in Florida.

So Cokie doesn't want us to go there so she
makes her little joke and then tries to
look good (her specialty) and say bad bad
things about the bad bad insurance companies
which are her party's bread and butter
and main supporters behind big oil and big Pharma.
Even Dowd didn't want to step up and risk
being interrupted by at least Peg, Cokie and
that nice conservative man with the nice nice
Catholic made for TV haircut.

Needs a swift kick in the ass.

His comparison is so strained, you can feel him not believing it. Funny, the Republicans' main working talking point is that both sides suck.

So, let's dissect:
1. Health care reform is a distraction from the economy like Iraq was a distraction from Afghanistan. No, health care costs are killing the economy. Fix health care and the economy gets better.

2. When Iraq got bad, attack the opposition, like how the White House is "attacking" the teabaggers. No, the opposition to the Iraq war was pre-emptively attacked and routinely vilified. No one is calling the teabaggers un-American (in fact, their willful ignorance is distinctively American) or questioning their right to petition their government for redress of grievances. The issue is that the teabaggers are trying to stifle speech and trying to intimidate congress members.

3. Follow the money. Bush/Cheney engaged in the "target rich" environment of Iraq explicitly to funnel money to their corporate masters. (Remember Rumsfeld basically saying that their were a whole lot more things to blow up in Iraq.) Is Obama or any other Democrat going to get rich off of an expanded Medicare? No, the moneyed interests are behind the teabaggers, and if you could get your head out of your asses, you could see the lobbyists' fingerprints all over the useful idiots who are the teabaggers.

4. Matt Dowd is a douchebag. Not one person at the table said, "Seriously? That's the stupidest comparison I've heard yet. Sure, it would aid Republicans politically if they could argue that Obama is half as stupid as George Bush, but that dog don't hunt." These idiots were too busy circle jerking each other to realize that someone had just shit in the hot tub.

)O(

The odd thing is they never consider the cost of healthcare to businesses required to provide some kind of coverage.

And even some small businesses are complaining, because their part of having to pay for the coverage is essentially driving them out of business.

And we're competing internationally with countries who do provide national healthcare to their workers, so their businessmen aren't distracted by the issue.

That they succeeded once again with their awful show?

They did not inform the American people of a damn thing worth knowing.

Once again this show shows how irrelevant it really is.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Cheney, Bush, et al own stock in the companies that prospered during their tenure. They still do, as do those in DC now. It isn't just the campaign contributions. Think about the shareholders of the corporations.

Halliburton was under Chapter 11 after being fined for underreporting losses and loosing investors.
Carlyle Group had assets in the several hundred millions........now their assets are in the 10s of billions.......not exactly what the rest of us would call a blind trust eh?

Why is anybody surprised by the lack of brains from the party of "NO ideas".

No ideas and no class.

Not that it ultimately matters. This is all just a big bizarre show to keep the masses divided so they will not revolt against their "superiors" running the government. Who will feel stupider when all is finally revealed--we who knew or should have known or the true believers?

Instead her comment shows her utter lack of knowledge.
I mean, she is completely clueless.

Not one person here realizes that this is a ginned up whacko event just like the tea fartiers.

I just about screamed when they went on to pontificate about their holy "centrism".

I mean to ask: How much farther out of the mainstream of America can these awful shows get?

And why in hell do we keep watching them?

)O(

Not to defend Cokie but she was joking. It was a bad joke but it was the extent of her grasp of humour.

)O(

The humorous thing about humor is that it can be used as a distraction.

Y

From 14 seconds on she develops a goofy grin exposing her intentions to deliver this one line at all cost. Her whole statement was a throw-away-line.

)O(

Like palin's ho buildup to, "Say it ain't so, Joe?"

Non actors always seem to tip their hat at some point.
Like Condi Rice talking to Congress about our need to go to war. You could tell that she was not comfortable with the words that were coming out of her mouth.

It's truly like listening to humanoids from another planet yammering when these two get going. The trance like looks on their faces are a tip off that they are about to impart their own experience, which being so entirely insular and coddled as to make absolutely no sense to anyone else.

She is a despicable barnacle, most likely never having paid for her own health care, instead having her daddy or husband take care of all those little details that have brought her to such a place of criminal ignorance.

Has C&L lost the ability to distinguish a punch line from substantive, carefully worded debate.

Lighten up everybody. Left and right - lighten up.

And all this time I thought it was up to our parents...

... I've come to the conclusion, she was indeed joking. What I thought was a good suggestion too stymie or diffuse the more radical agitators, turns out to just have been "cocky" being disingenuous. I should have known? I still like the idea and I'm an atheist!

Maybe it was all those flying-Nun shows I watched as a kid? :)

Reminds me of "History of the World: Part 1" where Mel Brooks says, "...nothing is working - send in the nuns!" during the Inquisition musical number.

I've never watched that movie, could you find a clip. I tried, but don't know what section of the movie to look for? Maybe ysb knows? Anybody?...

)O(

"Oh piss boy!"

History of the World Part One-The Spanish Inquisition
[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hEh2NH6teY ](8:15)

It was a bad joke, but a joke none the less.

jeez... talk about taking something out of context.

...we think Cokie is, that's all it was. You don't have to be Cokie fan or apologiest to see that for what it was.

Hell, I find myself wishing these morons would have gotten better trained in how to behave in a civil manner, and I can say from 16 years of Catholic education that it's true those damn nuns taught you how to show some respect in gatherings like this.

I wouldn't wish the nuns of old on anyone, normally, but in my more frustrated moments watching these people act like loud, bratty kids I can sure appreciate where Cokie was going with that...

...drum roll please...

...JOKE, FER CHRISSAKES!!!!!

Can we all just lighten up?

Agreed, it was a joke. But, I'm at the point I just cannot stand to listen to these Beltway insiders like Cokie, Sam Donaldson and Matthew Dowd because they totally ingnore (or don't care) how people like Palin, Limbaugh and Beck are stirring up the uneducated masses to turn them into mobs. And, the mobs drive away sane people from the town halls because no one sane wants to deal with that shit and information does not get to them.

This is the true purpose of the teabaggers, the birthers and the rest of the looney fringe, to shut off debate. They don't even realize they are being used like Pavlovian dogs. I weep for my country.

"Domineeka neeka neeka domineeka neeka new a neeka neeka new..." Music calms the town hall mobs.
