Yeah, we were right about the U.S. Attorney firings. (See above video, which is ten months old.) Even Karl Rove and Harriet Miers admit it now:

The dismissal of New Mexico U.S. Attorney David C. Iglesias in December 2006 followed extensive communication among lawyers and political aides in the White House who hashed over complaints about his work on public corruption cases against Democrats, according to newly released e-mails and transcripts of closed-door House testimony by former Bush counsel Harriet Miers and political chief Karl Rove.

A campaign to oust Iglesias intensified after state party officials and GOP members of the congressional delegation apparently concluded he was not pursuing the cases against Democrats in a way that would help then- Rep. Heather Wilson in a tight releection race, according to interviews and Bush White House e-mails released Tuesday by congressional investigators. The documents place the genesis of Iglesias's dismissal earlier than previously known.

The disclosures mark the end of a two-and-a-half year investigation by the House Judiciary Committee, which sued to gain access to Bush White House documents in a dispute that struck at the heart of a president's executive power. House members have reserved the right to hold a public hearing at which Rove, Miers, and other aides could appear this fall.

House Judiciary Chairman John M. Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) Tuesday characterized the role of Bush White House figures in the firing episode as improper and inappropriate.

I often wonder what it's like to live in the simplistic black-and-white world of your typical Republican bobblehead. Are their brains truly this unable to process nuance? Take, for example, Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) who is only too happy to categorize (with host Bob Schieffer's enabling, bless his Republican-loving little heart) Barack Obama as unpatriotic. Why? Because at his speech in Germany, he acknowledged that there have been errors in America's foreign policy.

SCHIEFFER: Well, that sounds like you’re saying that he’s somehow unpatriotic, which seemed to be the underlying theme of what she said yesterday, Congresswoman.

WILSON: Well, he has talked down about America and you know, we’ve always had this history of saying, well, politics ends at the waters’ edge. And it didn’t for Barack Obama. He’s been critical, not only of the President, but of American policy and has kind of a negative view of the American world. That’s not unusual, frankly, among liberals in kind of post-Vietnam America to say that America is the problem. I think Sarah Palin believes that America is part of the solution. We are an exceptional country, we are a force for good and we need to talk about the good things we do.

Sigh. Look, I love my kids more than life itself. I think they are incredible, beautiful, smart children that make me proud to be their mom everyday. But even that primal, ferocious love I have for my kids doesn't prevent me from seeing that they are also impatient, impulsive and occasionally bratty. It doesn't blind me to their failings and I'm not a terrible mother if I acknowledge the areas in which they could improve when they have done wrong.

But apparently, in Heather Wilson's (and Bob Schieffer, let's not forget he is the one framing this as such) world, what I should do is let my kids be monsters outside the house and then ignore others who suggest that they could exercise restraint, blaming them for not recognizing their inherent goodness.

Tell me, how is that acting in their best interests? And this is what Heather Wilson thinks the President ought to do on a national scale?

KKOB Radio afternoon drive time news anchor Laura MacCallum quit her job last Thursday after the station’s news director pulled her stories about alleged vote-buying efforts at the recent Bernalillo County Republican Party delegate nominating conventions.

MacCallum, a 32-year radio and TV news veteran who has worked in Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, said the station caved to complaints from Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s Senate campaign about the stories. Wilson campaign spokeswoman Whitney Cheshire called the station to argue the unfairness of stories alleging that many delegates to the ward conventions were paid by Wilson’s and other campaigns to show up and cast their votes for certain delegates.

Critics of the alleged vote-buying effort say it was an unfair scheme to lock out any challengers to Wilson’s senate and Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White’s congressional campaigns

KKOB News Director Pat Allen said the stories were pulled, not because of the campaign’s complaints, but because he felt they lacked corroboration and that a source in some of MacCallum’s stories, former New Mexico Governor Dave Cargo, was bitter because he wasn’t elected as a delegate to the upcoming state Republican Party nominating convention.

But here's the best part: one of the reasons cited by the station manager for not running the story is because it "would have been picked up by bloggers" and other news agencies if it was valid.

We know that Heather Wilson has been guilty of placing pressure on the US Attorney's office in the past, it's certainly within her character to try to squelch a story like this, which could cost her her seat.

We've been keeping close tabs on the fired prosecutors story here at DailyKos, with a special focus on our two good friends who tried to strong-arm the long arm of the law, Sen. "Pajama Pete" Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson. As you may know, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (aka CREW) has filed ethics complaints against both alleged law-breaker lawmakers (Domenici | Wilson).

What you may not know is that the complaint against Wilson may wind up going nowhere. Paul Kiel at the indispensable TPM Muckraker explains:

[T]here's a funny thing about the ethics committee in the House. Unlike in the Senate, a complaint does not automatically trigger a preliminary investigation. For that to happen, a member of the House has to file a referral. And, because of an ongoing ethics truce between the parties, that is exceedingly rare.

I worry that this scandal is too obscure for many Americans to understand, but this is a really big deal. The Republican roughshod is almost mafia like and we just cannot let Heather Wilson slide. Please, please contact your Representative and demand that an ethics investigation be opened against Wilson.
