Oh, wingnuts. If only you could possibly understand how insane you sound. The newest recycled craze is hysteria over Muslims taking over the United States, but honestly, this one tops some of the weirdest of the weird.

Via Right Wing Watch:

End Times fanatic Rick Wiles of TruNews on Friday hosted notorious anti-Muslimactivist Steven Emerson to discuss how the Muslim Brotherhood is coming to power in the US and around the globe. Emerson alleged that members of Congress, specifically Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) are “in the pocket” of Islamist groups which are using “stealth jihad.”

WTF, people? Did Frank Gaffney inject another round of cash into your can of crazy?

I snark about this, but what these people are doing is quite dangerous, and it fits with the NRA's campaign to throw a nationwide hissy fit about any limitations on gun rights whatsoever. Muslims are the new Commie, with the added bonus of being brown, which appeals to the nativists and Klan members. But hey, fear is fear, and right now they need fear stoked up high in order to get people distracted from reasonable gun limits like universal background checks and the like.

This particular segment feels creepily like the McCarthy days. Look who they're blaming:

He also claimed that the Muslim Brotherhood has “penetrated virtually all institutions in the United States, wittingly or unwittingly,” including the federal government, news media, entertainment industry, book publishers and academia, as they back the group’s “ultra-fascist ideology.”

That certainly sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Meanwhile, a FrontPageMag reporter infiltrated the Muslim Student's Conference last month and ended up with absolutely nothing to report. Instead of simply saying so, he offered a theory:

And, politicizing and organizing that younger generation in campus groups and strengthening their sense of community as Muslims, strengthening their campus activism, that’s all, that’s a very important goal because it radicalizes them and it steers them toward further radicalization down the line. So, yeah, it's all about capturing the hearts and minds of the young.

Dick Durbin, Keith Ellison, and the Muslim Brotherhood, bringing jihad to a neighborhood near you? Do you think these people really believe the nonsense they spew, or is it just a cynical effort to keep everyone afraid and submissive?

Among the many illogical disconnects that have accompanied Glenn Beck's eliminationist jihad against progressives, none has been more glaring than Beck's seeming embrace of progressive civil-rights leaders like Martin Luther King.

That contradiction was simply glaring on Beck's show yesterday, when he started out by reminding everyone of the ground rules of his program's running thesis:

Beck: The enemy is not the Republicans. It's not the Democrats. It's not the President. It's not! It's the distortion of the truth, that's the enemy. That somehow or another, Big Government is good. That's not true! The Founders have been proven right, over and over and over again. When the government gets too big or out of control, it always ends the same way. And it's not a happy ending.

We're putting a documentary out called, "Progressivism: America's Cancer." It is an in-depth look at how progressives threw America way off track around the turn of the century.

For a sample of just how accurate this documentary will be, Beck then explained how exemplary those pro-gun protesters were outside the Capitol, and wasn't it remarkable how there wasn't even a pistol-whipping? But he couldn't even get this right: Beck proclaimed they had "loaded guns!" outside the Capitol, but that's not accurate: The people carrying guns had to protest outside D.C., in Virginia:

In the nation's capital, where possession of guns is strictly regulated, they came carrying only signs and handbills, which one man had thrust into an empty holster.

Beck then went on a rant contending that Bill Clinton was to blame for Oklahoma City because he had so angered right-wing nutcases like tim McVeigh that of course he was bound to go off sooner or later. (Sorta aligns with Beck's theory that if Tea Party violence erupts, it will have been deliberately provoked by Obama and Co.)

Ah, but because they have weathered this awful media storm of being accused of being unhinged xenophobes, the Tea Party folks therefore deserve to be compared to the gallant Civil Rights marchers of the 1960s, at least on Planet GlennBeckia -- because they used to say things just like that about Martin Luther King!

Beck: America Tea Party goers, you are in good company. Standing up against the government -- a government that you feel is grabbing too much power or is out of control. If you do it peacefully, you are in good company. And so far, that's the only evidence they have. Peace.

In a finishing touch, the "Speak Boldly" promotional segment then featured footage from the 1960s Civil Rights marches.

Ironically, it was just a couple of weeks ago that Glenn Beck was chiding John Lewis -- one of the most important figures of the Civil Rights era -- for having dared to walk through the crowd of anti-health-care Tea Partiers "because they wanted to compare themselves to the civil rights activists. How dare you!" he cried.

Even more ironic is a simple fact that seems to have eluded Beck's attention: Civil Rights always have been a progressive cause. And Martin Luther King was a major progressive figure. As we explained:

Somali Jihad Over

I don't know what to think of this. Something tells me this is not the last time we'll hear about the Islamists in Somalia. I find the statement that this is the "end" of terrorism in the country a bit ironic, to say the least.

GuardianUK: (h/t Gregory)

Not a shot was fired yet the Somali jihad was suddenly over...
Their fortress fell without a shot. After just nine days of clashes in Somalia's hinterland, the Islamists who had vowed to fight to the death abandoned Mogadishu, the city they had governed since June. From having controlled most of southern and central Somalia, they were holed up yesterday in the southern port city of Kismaayo, facing annihilation by Ethiopian troops.

Ali Mohamed Ghedi, Prime Minister in Somalia's transitional government - an irrelevance until last week - rode triumphantly into Mogadishu on Friday, announcing the end of 'terrorism' in the country. Ethiopia, which together with the US has stoked fears about the rise of a terrorist state in the Horn of Africa, was basking in the success of a campaign that was swifter and more successful than anyone had predicted.

'Nobody expected the Islamists to show this little political resilience,' said Matt Bryden, a consultant to the conflict-monitoring body, International Crisis Group. 'They were the first movement to pacify southern Somalia for 16 years, yet they crumbled like a pack of cards.'

Despite US and Ethiopian optimism, it remains unclear whether the military victory represents a new dawn for Somalia or merely a return to anarchy and the beginning of a deadly new insurgency. Read on...

UPDATE: Call me prescient: Somali, Ethiopian troops fight Islamic militants

Meanwhile, at the OTHER war...

Yahoo News :

The Taliban gunmen who murdered two teachers in eastern
Afghanistan early Saturday were only following their rules: Teachers receive a warning, then a beating, and if they continue to teach must be killed.

The new list of 30 rules, decided on during a high Taliban meeting in September or October and since circulated over the Internet, span from the organizational - no jihad equipment may be used for personal means - to the health conscious - militants are not supposed to smoke.

They also contain a grave warning for aid workers and educators.

Rule No. 24 forbids anyone to work as a teacher "under the current puppet regime, because this strengthens the system of the infidels." One rule later, No. 25, says teachers who ignore Taliban warnings will be killed. Read on...

FOX News Journalists released

WaPo:

After their release, Centanni and Wiig told reporters that they hoped that their experience would not scare other journalists from reporting on the Palestinians. After a brief news conference, they headed by van for the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem, Fox News said.

The NY Times has a detailed account of what happened.

Two journalists kidnapped in Gaza were released unharmed today after being forced at gunpoint to say on a videotape that they had converted to Islam. The two journalists from Fox News — Steve Centanni, 60, an American reporter based in Washington, and Olaf Wiig, 36, a freelance cameraman from New Zealand — were held for 13 days in an abandoned garage in the Gaza Strip as hostages of a previously unknown group calling itself the Holy Jihad Brigades.

Video May Show CARE Director Being Killed

The station initially said it would air parts of the video, but Ballout then said it would not.

O'Reilly Referees Christian Right Fight

O'Reilly Referees Christian Right Fight

Taylor Marsh talks about James Dobson's connection to Abramoff:

"Last night on "The Factor," the first guest up was none other than Dr. Dobson. You might remember the good doctor from Samuel Alito's recent thank you note, or maybe it's his non-stop jihad on all things post 18th century. Well, last night Bill O'Reilly offered Dobson an opportunity to answer charges from a group called DefCon, whose cause is "Campaign to Defend the Constitution Because the Religious Right is Wrong." Amen.

Dobson was in a near tizzy over the implication that he had anything whatsoever to do with Ralph Reed's current troubles that extend across the south, compliments of his religious right hypocrisy. As a renegade member of the "frozen chosen" I'm all ears when hypocrisy hits the news...read on"

THE CENSORSHIP CAMPAIGN GETS A BOOST

Howard Fineman said to Imus this morning "Do you want to know anything other than what the government tells you?"
Avedon has it right: That's what Arthur Silber says - and he's usually a pretty astute observer. I also agree. This is what they have been after all along - to turn the press into nothing more than a propaganda arm of the ultra-right movement.

The Light of Reason is right on.

The Noise Machine by ASZ says: . Blah3.com gets it exactly right - Newsweek should resist all efforts to morph this story into something it's not - a story about Newsweek.

Not one person or entity actually associated with the Bush mis-administration has denied that THE SUBSTANCE OF THE STORY IS CORRECT. You can look it up. But what they're turning the story into is a jihad against Newsweek. Again, as I opined last night, “message sending” to the rest of the media. Let's make no mistake about it - THE SUBSTANCE OF THE STORY IS CORRECT.

Talk Left has a great post on the Newsweek story.

Tragically, a family was murdered in New Jersey last week. The father of the family, Hossam Armanious, was a "Coptic Christian" who had argued with Muslims in an internet chat room. The Coptic Christian community in New Jersey believes the murder was a hate crime. Authorities say it's only one theory under investigation.

Already, conservative christian commentators are spreading filth. With headlines like Jihad in New Jersey, they want to know why this family's murder isn't receiving the attention of the Scott Peterson or Kobe Bryant case. Read the column, it's sick and a reminder of how many hatemongers are out there and how destructive they can be....read on
