The GOP’s Fraudulent Claims about Vote Fraud

At a DC press conference this morning, the GOP trotted out two elder statesmen to do its dirty work – former senators John Danforth and Warren Rudman. Echoing accusations made by McCain and the RNC against the community organizing group ACORN, they falsely warned that voter fraud could throw the election into chaos.

With a straight face Danforth said that 2008 could be like 2000 if we don’t act now. But I’m sorry, wasn’t 2000 when his party strong-armed the recount and disenfranchised thousands of Floridians? But never mind that.

In fact, today’s press conference was just the latest effort by the GOP to justify voter suppression under the guise of so-called election integrity. As in the past, Republicans have latched onto a few colorful but insignificant examples – e.g. a man who was registered to vote 73 times and a 7-year-old child who was registered – to advocate for draconian enforcement measures that disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters, typically minority and low-income voters.

But there are already safeguards in place that prevent people who submit fraudulent voter registrations from actually voting. In fact, there is no evidence of significant voter fraud of any variety anywhere in the nation. At the urging of the GOP, the Justice Department sought evidence of fraud but came up empty-handed.

However, there is evidence for significant vote suppression and disenfranchisement. As the New York Times reported last week: “Tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law.” This is what Danforth and Rudman would have talked about today if they really cared about election integrity.

They also would have talked about the various barriers to voting that members of their party have erected, like rejecting voter registration forms not printed on 80-pound bond paper or requiring names on voter registration forms to exactly match records in existing databases (e.g. Mike R. Neuman would be rejected if listed elsewhere as Michael R. Neuman). Or how about the strict voter ID laws put in place by Republicans? They seem reasonable enough, until you consider that millions of voting-age Americans (perhaps as high as 10%) do not have driver’s licenses.

The logic behind the GOP’s efforts is as simple as it is undemocratic: the fewer people who vote, the better off Republicans candidates will be. When you hear Republicans talk about vote fraud, here’s what they really mean:

Ken Mehlman on Meet the Press

A picture named Mehlman_MTP.jpg

Ken appeared on MTP today.

Mehlman's basic answer to most questions was " I would respectfully disagree..."

He's the artful dodger, rarely giving straight answers at all. Kudos to Russert for bringing up the Downing Street Memo. The efforts to get this story out is becoming succesfull.

Russert: That's pretty strong. Republicans have become the political arm of Christian conservatives. That's John Danforth.

Mehlman: I think he's a good man. I would respectfully disagree with that.

Russert: And if you really want to fix the solvency problem of Social Security, you should avoid it.

Mehlman: Well, I would respectfully disagree with Mr. Pozen..

Russert: Well, many people close to Pat Tillman have said just that.

Mehlman: Well, again, I would respectfully disagree,...

Update-AmericaBlog: "Call me crazy, but it sounds like Meet the Press's Tim Russert was pushing Ken on purpose. Hmmm... Why are you afraid to say what YOU think, Ken? The head of the entire Republican party doesn't have an opinion on homosexuality and gay rights issues?

John C. Danforth talks like a true man of Faith

Or to the point. There are more than two issues that a Christian can believe in.

Un Poeta Loco says: He makes points in the column that I have made many times in this very forum, namely that Christ’s commandment to “love thy neighbor” takes precedence over anything the hatemongering christians are spewing from their pulpits, perhaps because Christ’s love takes the fun out of hating, which is what they seem to do best. Danforth writes, "But for us [moderate Christians], the only absolute standard of behavior is the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves."

Danforth is saying the words that so many of us have longed <snark> to hear from the fake leaders of Evangelicals on 24/7. Will John ever be asked to voice his views on Joe Scarborough or Bill O'Reilly? Of course not because they make too much sense and don't feed into the hysteria of the extreme religious right.

Danforth: When, on television, we see a person in a persistent vegetative state, one who will never recover, we believe that allowing the natural and merciful end to her ordeal is more loving than imposing government power to keep her hooked up to a feeding tube.

Why wasn't his views allowed to become public discourse during those two weeks of a freak show where even today the same maniacs( LifeNews) are disputing the evidence of Terri's autopsy with proof like : An attorney for Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, is disputing the findings of an autopsy report released yesterday claiming Terri had significant brain damage, was essentially blind, and was likely not physically abused before her collapse They also point to videos taken with Terri interacting with doctors and following a balloon over her head with her eyes. ( she was blind ) ....Gibbs: "It demonstrated she had a strong will to live," Gibbs said" This is utterly insane. Are you going to belive me or those lying eyes defense?

Danforth: When we see an opportunity to save our neighbors' lives through stem cell research, we believe that it is our duty to pursue that research, and to oppose legislation that would impede us from doing so.

I'm taking betting odds. Who will get more air time, Randall Terry or John C. Danforth? A man of insanity or a man of reason. Or the question might be. Which one will give 24/7 better sound bites?

Jabbs says: The Schiavo Autopsy Was Conclusive ... Except For Those Who Prefer Conservative Media's "Alternate Universe of Facts"

Andy McKay: I have had enough of those radical medical examiners and their lefty autopsy reports. What gives them the right to set the agenda? On Wednesday, Pinellas County medical examiner Jon Thogmartin decided completely and separate from the will of the people, to dispute a videotaped diagnosis from Dr. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist that Terry Schiavo was able to see....read on

Then go read Bilmon: The Soldier Who Saw Everything Twice

Today's key document, I think, is former Sen. John Danforth's op-ed in the New York Times, which can be read as both his own personal declaration of independence from the religious right, and a manifesto calling upon the Republican Party to do likewise.

"But in recent times, we Republicans have allowed [our] shared agenda to become secondary to the agenda of Christian conservatives. As a senator, I worried every day about the size of the federal deficit. I did not spend a single minute worrying about the effect of gays on the institution of marriage. Today it seems to be the other way around"...read on
