Using racist code words is built into the psyche of all conservative pols so when Mrs. Crazy spouts off that the USA could become "Zimbabwe," they understand that what she's really saying is Obama is not a citizen, but an African/Muslin hiding out in the White House and undermining our values like so many Russian cold war spies did in the 70's and 80's. That's according to many movement conservatives like the Abramoff run College Republicans of days gone bye.

Laura Ingraham says that Bachmann is not afraid to take on President Obama. What a stud, girl. Here come the black helicopters everybody. Phony 'One world' conspiracy theories have populated the Militia and Patriot movements for decades and have proven to be quite profitable actually for those that transmit these seriously unbalanced views.

Bachmann: Do we really want to tie our fortunes to Venezuela or Zimbabwe?

Ingraham: We're tied to China.

Bachmann: That's right, we are because they've been buying our debt.

Ingraham: We are in a global economy.

Bachmann: Of course, of course, but we don't want to become MORE dependent. That's really the point.

She could have said Greece or Iceland or Spain, but no...it's Zimbabwe. You get the imagery.

Matt Yglesias writes:

The reassuring thing about a lot of the nonsense you hear from the right is to think to yourself “well, these guys are liars.” Other times you see something like this transcript of Rep Michele Bachmann talking to radio host Scott Hennen and you come face to face with the realization that some key figures in the movement are dumber than Jonah Goldberg.

Bachmann: Well, President Obama is trying to bind the United States into a global economy where all of our nations come together in a global economy. I don’t want the United States to be in a global economy where, where our economic future is bound to that of Zimbabwe.

Of course the existence of a global economy in which events outside our borders impact us is not something Barack Obama dreamed up, and the idea that having world leaders gather for occasional meetings constitutes a “one world government” is insane. Is her idea that the President should never meet with anyone? Does that undermine our sovereignty?

Gawker writes:

A few thoughts:

  • Zimbabwe isn't in the G20. It would take about G200 before Zimbabwe gets an invite.
  • The entire post-Cold War economic landscape has been one of a "global economy."
  • Everything else she said is stupid.
  • That's all.

The MNProgerssive Project: Michele Bachmann's latest conspiracy theory: G20 Summit is to talk about a one world government

Blue America's Tarryl Clark is a great choice to take Michele on so please support her if you can. If you live in the district I'm sure they are looking for help. It won't be easy, but at least we have a good candidate in Bachmann-land.

And so it continues. You can always count on Rep. Steve King to be the lowest of the low. Here's his newest acute observation on Rep. Grijalva's plight.

Unlike Grijalva, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is a big fan of Arizona's crackdown. After praising the effort in a statement earlier this week, King blasted Grijalva's position last night. During an interview on Fox News, King absurdly suggested that Grijalva's district has been "ceded" and accused the Arizona lawmaker of "advocating for Mexico" and against the United States.

LAURA INGRAHAM: This boycott is intended to do, what? I would imagine to intimidate people from supporting this law which, as far as I can tell, is wildly popular, but to intimidate because they're using dollars. Is there anything wrong with that?

REP. STEVE KING: Well, it looks like the case is that, that he's trying to scare the businesses out of Arizona, or he's trying to get the businesses to change their position and press the legislature to reverse the law that was just signed by the governor the other day. I'm wondering if we look at the map of Congressman Grijalva's congressional district if we haven't already ceded that component of Arizona to Mexico judging by the voice that comes out of him, he's advocating for Mexico rather than the United States and against the rule of law, which is one of the central pillars of American exceptionalism.

Steve King should be the Governor of Texas at this point. The fear of brown people is upon us. If you're brown, watch out.

Of course, this is coming from the same guy with the epic humanity to want to put an electric fence along the border, because we do it with "livestock all the time" too.

Digby links to a graph that shows a bunch of other states are lining up to pass frakked up bills next.

And then she adds:

Yes, American exceptionalism is so exceptional that right wingers are allowed to carve out exceptions to any part of the constitution they don't like. Strangely, the parts they don't like most often seem to be the ones that enumerate rights for people who don't look like them.

The xenophobes are on the warpath.

The right's favorite talking point on Thursday, with Ted Kennedy's funeral dominating the news, was to compare the event to Sen. Paul Wellstone's funeral and kvetch that Democrats were being crudely opportunistic in using Kennedy's death to help push harder for liberal health-care reform.

Laura Ingraham, filling in for O'Reilly on The Factor, was right in step, saying Dems were "playing the death card" and promising that such opportunism would cost them at the polls. Kvetch, kvetch, kvetch.

I think Amanda Marcotte has precisely the right response.

Your Two Minutes of Hate: Wingnut radio edition July 16th

Laura Ingraham actually outdoes The Savage Nation and says Obama wants Americans to die younger, but this line about Sotomayor is pretty awful too: "She's got ovaries, and she's Puerto Rican."

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Talk Show Host Scorned

Jesus General created this little video depicting talk show host Laura Ingraham slowly become the undead as she becomes angrier and angrier at the temerity of a guest who admits she doesn't *gasp* listen to talk radio.

Apparently, there is no greater sin in Laura Ingraham's mind than to not fully embrace and drink from the fount of wisdom of talk radio.

Update: Thank the blog gods Spocko is back and has a few sumpin's to say....

John Amato: It's interesting to hear the uncensored ego of Ingraham calling her guest a dummy.

Helping Lara Logan

cnn_rs_blame_media_lara_logan_060326a1.jpg Remember this post I did when Lara blasted the right wingers and Laura Ingraham in particular who were saying the media was biased against the war and afraid to leave their hotel balconies to report all the wonderful stories in Iraq?

Media Channel:

Logan asks for help in getting attention to what she calls “a story that is largely being ignored even though this is takingplace every single [sic] day in Baghdad, two blocks from where our office is located.”

The segment in question–”Battle for Haifa Street”–is a piece of first-rate journalism but one that only appears on the CBS News website–and has never been broadcast. It is a gritty, realistic look at life on the very mean streets of Baghdad, and includes interviews with civilians who complain that the US military presence is only making their lives worse and the situation more deadly. “They told us they would bring democracy, they promised life would be better than it was under Saddam,” one told Logan.“But they brought us nothing but death and killing. They brought mass destruction to Baghdad.”

Here's the video...

Conservative Daily Show coming soon

I just can't wait to see what will probably be the funniest show on TV.

Now Fox News Channel, a primary source of material for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, is teaming with the exec producer of "24" to try its hand at a news satire show for conservatives to love. Joel Surnow, co-creator of "24," is shooting two half-hour pilots of a skein he described as " 'The Daily Show' for conservatives," due to air in primetime on Saturdays in January

Just think about all the situations where Brown people can be made fun of. And as for "24," I'd say Laura Ingraham in the clip below really nails it with this bit of comedy.

What did you think of her audition piece? Oh wait--she's being serious. My bad. I'm sure Alberto Gonzales was checking the Nielsen ratings on "24" before he rendered his decision on torture.

Hate Merchants

Salon (watch a short ad for a site pass):

Hate merchants: Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Beck, Savage, Ingraham and their ilk poison the airwaves and do the GOP's dirty work. Why are they given a platform by the media? And with so many right-wing liberal-bashers, why do reporters feel the need to pile on? Jamison Foser tackles the second question: "Given the magnitude of the Republicans' loss, we might expect the journalists and pundits who have so mercilessly mocked Democrats as bumblers and fools, the political equivalent of the Washington Generals, to turn their snide comments and patronizing jokes on the GOP. With Karl Rove apparently wandering around in a daze, wondering what the hell happened, surely his spectacularly incompetent reading of the electorate has earned him months, if not years, of ridicule by the likes of Norah O'Donnell, Chris Matthews, and Mark Halperin.

We all know how the pundits would chortle if Democrats took an electoral thumpin', then responded by elevating their most liberal members to the party leadership. We'd hear how their policies and their demeanor were anathema to "real Americans" -- and how their reaction to defeat shows just how clueless these effete liberals are.

But those waiting for similar treatment of the GOP at the hands of the nation's political reporters and pundits shouldn't hold their breath. It isn't coming.

Laura Ingraham's Attempt To Jam DNC Phone Lines

ingraham.jpg

Here is the audio of Laura Ingraham telling her listeners:

Tell me if you think I’m crazy. This is what I’m thinking. I think we all need to call 1 888 DEM VOTE all at the same time.

icon Download | play - MP3

Yeah - you are crazy Laura. I wonder what other terms the DNC's lawyers will have for you in the coming days.

Think Progress has the transcript, as well as links to some of the prank calls the DNC has received since Ingraham decided to show how little she thinks of democracy.

Voting Open Thread

vote.jpg

UPDATE:

Christy has this:

UPDATE: Laura Ingraham has asked her listeners to call the Dem Voter protection hotline — and they are now being flooded with calls from crank callers. Please call Laura and tell her what you think about this: 800.876.4123. You can e-mail her here. Apparently, voter intimidation and fraud are a joke to Laura Ingraham. Let's let her know that it is no joke.

UPDATE #2: More on Laura Ingraham: "caller indicated she is running a tape of Bill Clinton over and over saying "call 1-888 Dem Vote to report problems" — and then making fun of him, thus producing a spike in crank calls to the number" Protecting voter integrity is no joke. And I am not laughing. If anyone has audio of this, I'd love it.

If anyone can get a clip of this, please do and send it to me at intoxination [at] gmail.com.

Now that polling places are open throughout the country, use this thread to share your voting experiences today (good or bad). Don't forget to try and encourage family, friends and co-workers to get out and vote today (offer rides if they need it). The problems being reported can not be a discouragement to anyone. If you encounter problems, be sure to report them to 1-888-DEM-VOTE.

There is still time to help "Get Out The Vote" today.

A quick note about the site.

As with all elections, we are expecting a heavy server load today. I am putting safeguards in to limit any problems. This afternoon, I will be disabling the category and archive pages for the site (they will be restored tomorrow). This feature adds a lot to the server load and if a search engine decides to crawl us at that time, it will really hurt. We will be monitoring everything closely and recently did some upgrades, so we are hoping that problems are kept to a minimum. We do have other measures we will take if things look like they are starting to peak out.
