David Seaton's News Links: The present election campaign demonstrates that powerful forces in the Washington political and foreign policy communities, reinforced by financial and industrial interests, are committed to suppressing all challenge to policies that already have altered the political character of the United States.

The Pump Handle: Another censored environmental report (Arctic Drilling Edition)

sardonic sideshow: The Hillary Standard

The Heretik: Do not be alarmed. Your government is busy keeping you safe.

FAIR: White Supremacist spin at USA Today

Papamoka Straight Talk: There's probably no one who knows more about war profiteers in Iraq-- outside of Cheney and the folks at Halliburton and KBR-- than Alan Grayson, an attorney prosecuting numerous war profiteering cases.

Sounding the Alarm on Pearl Jam, Censorship, and Media Freedom

OpenLeft:

At YearlyKos, I met FCC Commissioner Michael Copps. He's an amazing man, but he told us something very disturbing. He thinks that the signs are out there that the FCC is getting ready to loosen media ownership rules against the will of the public. They have already done this with the internet, and Congress has not acted to remedy the problem.

A few days ago, the problem because crystal clear. AT&T censored political speech over streaming video by Pearl Jam at a concert. This was overt censorship of political speech. With the flurry of outrage, it's increasingly clear that corporate control over our media system is not only a huge problem but a well-understood problem by the public. AT&T is trying to pass this off as a simple mistake, though there's no particular reason to trust what the company has to say, and Wired is reporting that the company may also have censored political speech by the Flaming Lips and the John Butler Trio. But whether this is a mistake or not is not really important. The question is whether there should be a gatekeeper in front of what we have the right to say. And the answer to that question is obviously no.

I'm going to reprint Michael Copps's full speech below. It's a clear warning of some important regulatory changes that are underway right now at the FCC. We're going to need millions to speak out on this. Read the speech here...

AT&T Censors Pearl Jam's Anti-Bush Lyrics At Lollapalooza

pj.jpg Via Down With Tyranny:

CMJ is reporting that AT&T censored Pearl Jam's Lollapalooza set on Sunday. Maybe they figured no one would notice. I guess this has to be expected when one gets in bed with freedom's mortal enemy: corporations, which will always pimp for the status quo. The was an AT&T Blue Room live broadcast set up and an AT&T "content monitor" found "Daughter" too risque for Lollapalooza fans.

Maybe they objected to Eddie quoting that subversive Neil Young! No, it wasn't that. According to the Pearl Jam website it was lines sung by Eddie: "George Bush, leave this world alone" and "George Bush find yourself another home" that offended them so. Pearl Jam doesn't seem too happy: Read more...

shut up you fat whiner! An amazing post by Salam Pax, who seems to have become a full time, extremely frustrated news producer in Baghdad (hat tip to War and Piece)

State of the Day: Look, everybody, the president is doing his job!...and so is Condi.

Sadly, No! The Homeland Security official who signed off on funding cuts for New York and extra cash for the heartland is a small-town gal whose back-door appointment to the job was mired in controversy.

The WitList: We're only (partly) human after all

BBC NEWS-Climate chaos: Bush's climate of fear: Today, a US government whistleblower tells Panorama how scientific reports about global warming have been systematically changed and suppressed. Some of America's leading climate scientists claim to Panorama that they have been censored and gagged by the administration.

Project Censored compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of social significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media. This one is perhaps the most important.

King of Zembla: In the case of needless murder of Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes by British anti-terror cops, the woman who exposed Blair as a wretched, self-serving liar is under arrest for her civic-mindedness.

Can this be true? BWA HAHAHAHA

Coalition Of The Bribed, Bullied And Politically Suicidal

After the firestorm of indignation from the Right over the inconsistent claims of a freed Italian journalist hostage suggesting she may have been targeted by Americans for assassination, Italy’s abrupt decision to withdraw it’s troops from Iraq starting in September 2005, should bring relative silence to the CEC.

Not even waiting for the promised whitewash full and thorough Pentagon investigation of the incident is a telling sign of just how much opposition to the Iraq War existed among our third largest ally.

However, those on the Right who undoubtedly will unleash their anti-Italian bile at long last, will also seek to scapegoat a supposed gloating ‘anti-war Left’. Here’s a recent comment post TCF has been cerebrally composing for just such an occasion:

Such a reaction by those of you on the Right only reinforces the image of an insolent, spoiled brat, lashing out and blaming others for misfortunes you've perpetuated.

And, I'm not a gloating, anti-war Lefty, I'm a pissed off one!

You want everyone to believe that Italy's decision is based on the hysterics of Sgrena, and that the Italians were staunch allies before this decision.

Wrong, on both counts!

I'm outraged that an ally could not unequivocally dismiss any notion that American troops were purposely targeting one of their journalists. I'm outraged that an ally government doesn't even trust a Pentagon inquiry enough, before making this decision.

The Italians were overwhelmingly anti-war, long before this incident. Why? Because, the evidence of torture, 'extraordinary rendition' and suspicious deaths of Al Jeezera journalists were not censored in their country!

After 9/11, Americans have excused or turned a blind eye to such behavior unbecoming a compassionate superpower, proven or not. Our allies apparently find this unacceptable.

Which is deserving of praise, not scorn.
