Somebody cue up a mournful, yet optimistic, spiritual, because the Republicans think they're marching on Selma with their harebrained Social Security privatization scheme. Here's what Republican Rep. Tom Cole had to say recently:
Say what? Sure, I see exactly how screwing people out of their retirement and destroying America's economy is like taking part in a movement that helped give basic to an entire minority. And what would a Republican from Oklahoma know about taking part in the civil rights movement, anyway? If anything, people like Cole weren't on the receiving end of the fire hose, that's for sure. Something else you may have forgotten about Mr. Civil Rights. Here's a portion of an article from last year in the San Francisco Chronicle:
During a speech to Republicans in Yukon, Okla., last Saturday, the first-term congressman said that "if George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election" since enemies of the United States would interpret it as a sign of weakness.
Bin Laden is the alleged mastermind of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that killed nearly 3,000 people.
"What do you think Hitler would have thought if Roosevelt would've lost the election in 1944? He would have thought American resolve was" (weakening), Cole said, according to a spokeswoman.
Yeah, this guy's just full of love. Keep your eyes peeled as Cole and his colleagues take part in cafeteria sit-ins at a retirement home near you in the very near future.
