I still find it very odd that Ashcroft was a hero in the whole Gonzo/Card trip to the hospital over the NSA program, but is so utterly clueless on so many fronts. I think it comes down to being an authoritarian. The BushCo's tried to mess with him when he was terribly ill and he rose up to meet that challenge, but I wonder if he was in perfect health---would he have stood in the way at all? I sincerely doubt it.
