Republican Senators Filibuster Citizens United Constitutional Amendment

No one should be surprised that Republicans are ardent supporters of corporate "free speech."

Of course Republicans are filibustering any effort to roll back the disaster that is Citizens United. Would we expect anything different? Politics is now a growth industry, fueling our economy. From cable advertising to Facebook ads, there's an entire public relations machine supported entirely by corporate dollars looking to influence votes and buy politicians.

It was one thing to vote to open debate, which the Senate did by a vote of 78-18. But there's no way Republicans will vote to close debate when they're having so much fun making up "Citizens United Saturday Night Live Death Panels" like Ted Cruz did yesterday.

The vote to close debate (cloture) was 54-42, six votes short of the supermajority needed to move to a vote on the measure, which would certainly be politically difficult for those Republican masters of the universe. How could they possibly bite the hand that feeds them while pretending they're all about populist causes, after all?

Ted Cruz couldn't even be bothered to show up for the cloture vote, after his hour-long rant about Saturday Night Live and free speech.

Every time you hear Mitch McConnell whine about free speech, remember that he's really whining about corporate billionaires having their way with all of us little people.

Also, remember this: They can try and buy influence over your vote, but they can't buy your vote outright. If you want this amendment, vote on November 4th to boot their bootlicking asses out of office.
