Office Of Government Ethics Twitter Account Hacked? Or Infiltrated?
After Donald Trump's announcement that he's not really avoiding conflicts of interest, the Office of Government Ethics Twitter account got weird.
Just after Donald Trump's announcement that he's making a pro forma gesture toward avoiding conflicts of interest by turning his businesses over to his children, the Office of Government Ethics sent out this bizarre series of tweets.
If you look at their account, their tweets are dry, informational, impersonal and policy-based. Until this. Worse yet, the announcement Trump made this morning does not suggest he is divesting himself of anything at all.
Washington Post reports:
President-elect Donald J. Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that he would soon leave his “great business in total” to focus on the presidency, a response to growing worries over the businessman-in-chief’s conflicts of interest around the globe.
The announcement appears to echo Trump’s long insistence that he would cede the company’s management to his children, a way of putting distance between his private interests and public power.
But it remained unclear whether the new arrangement would include a full sale of Trump’s stake in the company. Ethics advisers said a management hand-off to his children would not resolve worries that the business could still influence his decisions in the Oval Office.
So right now, we have no idea what Trump means by leaving his "great business in total," and neither does the Office of Government Ethics. So, what the hell?
Apparently there is a statement forthcoming about their storm of ebullient tweets. It seems to me they've got a problem on their hands if they actually meant to send them.
OGE officials said they would give a statement this afternoon but did not immediately offer explanation. The tweets were deleted within an hour of their first posting Wednesday morning, but returned around 1 p.m. for unknown reasons.
Update:
Here's one where they engaged with a parody account. What?
