The Oscars 2017 Open Thread
Who will give the best speech of the night?
It was another fine year for films in general so let's get right to the major awards.
Performance by an actor in a leading role
Casey Affleck in "Manchester by the Sea"
Andrew Garfield in "Hacksaw Ridge"
Ryan Gosling in "La La Land"
Viggo Mortensen in "Captain Fantastic"
Denzel Washington in "Fences"
I know there's a lot of controversy surrounding Affleck's personal life, but since he's nominated, I'll say he had the best performance. But never count out Denzel!
Performance by an actress in a leading role
Isabelle Huppert in "Elle"
Ruth Negga in "Loving"
Natalie Portman in "Jackie"
Emma Stone in "La La Land"
Meryl Streep in "Florence Foster Jenkins"
I believe Emma will take home the statue because La La Land is such a big favorite within the industry.
Performance by an actor in a supporting role
Mahershala Ali in "Moonlight"
Jeff Bridges in "Hell or High Water"
Lucas Hedges in "Manchester by the Sea"
Dev Patel in "Lion"
Michael Shannon in "Nocturnal Animals"
I still like Jeff Bridges the best.
Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Viola Davis in "Fences"
Naomie Harris in "Moonlight"
Nicole Kidman in "Lion"
Octavia Spencer in "Hidden Figures"
Michelle Williams in "Manchester by the Sea"
It's an upset if Viola doesn't win.
Achievement in directing
"Arrival" - Denis Villeneuve
"Hacksaw Ridge" - Mel Gibson
"La La Land" - Damien Chazelle
"Manchester by the Sea" - Kenneth
Lonergan"Moonlight" - Barry Jenkins
I believe Chazelle wins this award but loses best picture. However, what Villeneuve did with a modest budget was awesome.
Best motion picture of the year
"Arrival"
"Fences"
"Hacksaw Ridge"
"Hell or High Water"
"Hidden Figures"
"La La Land"
"Lion"
"Manchester by the Sea"
"Moonlight"
I hope "Hell or High Water" pulls the upset.
Here's the full list of nominees and their reviews.
(Add from Nicole:) Keep an eye out for blue ribbons on the red carpet. They're supporting the ACLU.
