Houston Astros' player Yuli Gurriel was suspended five games for using racist "slant eyes" gesture against the Dodgers' pitcher Yu Darvish after hitting a home run against him in game three of the World Series on Friday night.

Seems like a valid punishment. Except the suspension won't be administered until next season. How does that fit the crime? If MLB wanted to make a statement about how strongly they are opposed to racism, a one game suspension during the World Series, when the offense occurred, was warranted.

The LA Time also reported, "Gurriel also used the word “chinito,” or “Chinese boy,” in reference to Darvish, who is of Iranian and Japanese descent."

He went for a twofer on that one, but I guess the league didn't mind "chinito."

Fox 11's Liz Habib was furious on the local LA Fox affiliate and even criticized the national broadcast for refusing it bring up Gurriel's racism at all.

Gurriel apologized for his behavior, saying in a statement that he made “an offensive gesture that was indefensible…. I deeply regret it. I would particularly like to apologize to Yu Darvish, a pitcher that I admire and respect.”

Hallelujah, he has remorse.

Commissioner Manfred reassured the media how much everybody on both teams and the union despised what Guriel did.

"There is no question that it is a difficult decision as to when the appropriate timing was. obviously World Series games are different than regular-season games, and I used my best judgment as to where the appropriate disciplinary level fell. I understand that people may have different views. But it was my best judgment that this timing was appropriate."

ESPN reports that he was worried Gurriel would go through the appeal process, but that's on him and the players' union.

If they want to appeal racism, that's on them and not the league.

Make your ruling and let the chips fall. Racism cannot be legislated because MLB is in its post season.
