Democrats Should Not Deal On Trump's Border Wall
After Republicans ran the most racist midterm election campaign in modern history, there's no need to negotiate on the border wall since Trump's xenophobia was rejected in a historic fashion and by the way, Mexico's gonna pay for it.
[Above, via @politifight, a compilation of only some of the times, Trump promised Mexico would pay for the wall.]
The Democratic Party took back control of the House of Representatives in historic numbers after all the votes were counted (NC-09 notwithstanding), and they did so with the largest midterm raw-vote margin in U.S. history.
So this is no time to be cordial to a party that spat on the Constitution and disregarded every political norm we've ever had in order to defend the machinations of an egomaniacal narcissist with the mindset of a spoiled teenager still clinging on to fifty-year-old ideas that have no place in the modern world.
Also, he said Mexico was gonna pay for the wall.
The Republican Party was so hyped up on xenophobia that they almost turned the poor defenseless people in a migrant caravan into a zombie horde screaming "brains" as they marched.
And when a Trump supporter sent out over a dozen faulty pipe down bombs to Trump's rivals, Donald even expressed disappointment that his talking points against the caravan had been interfered with.
It was as despicable as it gets.
If Trump wants Democrats to do anything on immigration funding for his border wall before the new year, that is a nonstarter.
Do not listen to the press when they prattle on about bipartisanship, trying to force the left to acquiesce what they've just gained by the will of the population. Do not listen to their nattering about the old days and what will the Democratic Party's plan be for the future. Nevermind that: the only message Republicans had for eight straight years was to resist President Obama and see if he was a secret member of the Muslim Brotherhood, born in Kenya.
First things first. Refuse to fund his border wall and if he holds his breath and shuts down the government over it, let him.
As Greg Sargent writes: "A protracted government shutdown may or may not happen — it probably won’t — but let’s be clear on this one point: Democrats simply must not allow the results of this standoff to muddy the meaning of last month’s elections."
Greg is exactly correct. As Republicans always say, elections have consequences.
The good news is, Nancy Pelosi is showing the voters their decision in the midterms was heard. And Trump can "let" Mexico pay for the wall.
