Geraldo Ends Fox-Funded Senate Run

After using his radio show and Fox News commentator slot to tease about running for the US Senate, Gerald Rivera offically called an end to his unofficial campaign.

officially ended his unofficial exploration of a run at Senator Lautenberg's seat.

Geraldo owes a debt of gratitude to his backers at Fox News, though.

In January, Rivera said on his Cumulus radio program that he was "truly contemplating" running for the U.S. Senate. He then used platforms on Fox News and Fox News Latino to, in his words, "hone a message" for his possible campaign until "it's no longer legal" to do so (a move that drew criticism from media ethicists). Rivera appeared on Fox & Friends and wrote columns for Fox News Latino (see here, and here) to outline his campaign's message and deliver, in the words of Fox host Steve Doocy, his "stump speech."

As a native Californian who recalls his ridiculous Southern California reporting, his biased and insane commentary on the OJ trial, and who rejoiced when he left California for good, all I can say is good riddance to a bad idea.
