Mike's Blog Round Up

Anything They Say - how to blow up hearts and minds in Afghanistan.

And here's a clue for the clueless on another way the Bush administration has thrown away America's goodwill around the world - Gitmo.

The latest good news from Iraq - the most efficient government service in Iraq is bomb clean-up.

Experts admit it without saying so outright - Shinseki was right all along.

It's OK if U.S. soldiers die as long as Bush doesn't look bad. But does Godwin's Law still apply if the right are being so blatant about taking tips from the Nazis?

If the current U.S. force in Iraq can't deter a larger regional conflict who the hell is dumb enough to believe a residual force could?

Another set of Los Alamos nuclear secrets goes AWOL and almost no-one notices.

The "nuclear secrets" going AWOL is mind-boggling. How IN THE HELL can one "inadvertently" e-mail something like that?

Leaves one damn near speechless.

In reference to Anything they Say How in the hell do they know they are Taliban? Are they wearing t-shirts with Taliban written on it?

chimpy doesn't care about our troops and you know damn well he doesn't care about civilians.

Concerning the article about how Shinseki was correct that we should have had more troops, I love the assessment of Bush and by implication those who's "virtue" is being men of conviction:

"George Bush may be a man of conviction but he wouldn't be the first man whose convictions made him nothing more than a stubborn fool."

By the was, I love this new commenting system. Thanks to the great folks at C&L.

It should be more than apparent at this point that the "intelligence" NATO forces (i.e. de facto US forces) rely upon is often either terrible, wrong or just made up. Regarding the recent killing of the seven Afghan children by a NATO airstrike, NATO commanders claimed that they had the building under "surveillance" all day long and had no indication that there were children inside. Eye witnesses then said that they saw Taliban or militia fighters preventing the children from leaving the building. NATO agreed and said that Taliban fighters were using the children as human shields.

Now, how does one square the eye witness accounts, with which NATO agreed, with NATO's claim that they were watching the building all day long and didn't see any children present? What kind of surveillance misses children that other eye witnesses saw?

Smell test failed. Which is common. We see this all the time. Remember the airstrikes a few months ago in Somolia that took out "al Qaeda" forces? The next day we learned that US aircraft had, in fact, targeted and killed a rag tag band of goat herds. This had likewise been based on "intelligence."

Maybe because it had "Treated as TS/SCI" on it.

Seriously, there are at least three separate networks (unclass, secret, top secret) to email stuff through, and often computers are hooked up to only one of these networks. Someone had to intentionally transfer the info to an unclass computer and email it.

A great round-up!

I think Goodwin's Law is useful as a caveat, but only as that, since as he said himself, there are extremely valid reasons to cite the Nazis. The Bush administration certainly provides plenty of valid reasons. As Jonathan Schwarz wrote in a recent post:

As I've said before regarding Charles Krauthammer, it would be easier not to compare these guys to Nazi propagandists if everything they said wasn't straight out of Nazi propaganda...

It’s OK if U.S. soldiers die as long as Bush doesn’t look bad.

Can anyone think of another president in our history who has shown such callous contempt for the very military he was sending off to death. It has been said he hasn't even attended one funeral for any soldier.

How could he not look bad?

Well, I guess the commenting was down or something before. Let's try this again.

It’s OK if U.S. soldiers die as long as Bush doesn’t look bad.

Why is it that politicians don't realize that when they try to keep something from looking bad, that in itself looks worse?

Former Environmental Protection Agency boss Christie Whitman says she urged Ground Zero workers to wear respirators, but then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani blocked her efforts.

She also said city officials didn't want EPA workers wearing haz-mat suits because they "didn't want this image of a city falling apart."
