Some quick thoughts I had after I watched a little more of this interview: Chris Matthews descended into freakville Tuesday and shredded his already tattered reputation into oblivion after having the Republican spokesman--- Ann Coulter---on for a full hour. A full hour! He surrounded himself with a crowd of fan-thugs and as Digby sez:
Matthews sank to a new low today -- he's incapable of handling someone like Coulter and ended up giving her and her little fan-thugs a very good time. It made me feel a little bit sick. Seriously...read on

The video clip isn't meant to be about Ann (You can read Rick Perstein's article)---it's all about the shame of Chris. Watch her gut him. Matthews was utterly steamrolled by Annie for the full show and I can't even list the amount of lies she told that he had no answer for. Every insane talking point you can think of was on display: "YES, it's a fact!," she'd say...And Chris would move on to a new topic or poll.....Obviously, she shouldn't be given this type of format, but what's needed is for the host to jump in and correct the record. Have a backbone....
She claimed Saddam was working with al-Qaeda, we didn't go to war with Iraq because of WMD's, but Iraq had them anyway. It was just the whiny liberal press (Matthews included) who made those claims. They/she had "other reasons" to go to war with Iraq. Matthews tried to slow her down a bit, but she shouted at him with an over the top exuberance and he haplessly moved on...These conmen can see a mark a mile away and Annie found a nice one. ON FAUX NEWS---even Bill O'Reilly and Hannity and Colmes limit her air time. With H&C, she usually gets two segments, but the Factor Man usually does just one. Not Matthews, he had her all to himself...and the wind...and the fans that probably were sent down by Coulter's PR firm.
Elizabeth Edwards called in and for a brief instant tried to bring some balance and rationality back to the show---someone who had been a victim of her hate speech got a chance to confront her. Coulter just cackled and laughed at her and Matthews let that moment die, switched topics to some "chubby legs" comment she made and never even said goodbye to Elizabeth Edwards as she hung up. OMG. It was like she never called the show....This was a perfect time to have Elizabeth Edwards confront her for another segment, but Chris just hung up on a Presidential candidate's wife.
Mediabloodhound emailed Nicole and asked if this is the same fan-thug crowd that showed up for the last Coulter in the Square event that Matthews had for her. I haven't had time to check, but I wouldn't doubt it...
It was a grotesque display for a man who considers himself a serious journalist and opinion maker, but we know otherwise...I can't tell you the amount of email I received that said they were going to stop watching Hardball. Since I cover the media, I'll be around, but I know he angered quite a few viewers yesterday...Email Hardball here and tell them what you think…

I hope someone recorded this morning's Today Show. Tweety was on with Meredith Vieira to talk about last night's show. He admitted that she "thinks that Saddam was responsible for 9/11 and that there were WMDs", and essentially admitted that the only reason for her to be on his show was that "she sells lots of books".
It was pretty sad.
And he does not clean up well early in the AM.
He's obviously trying to take her away from Sean.

I was giving him a break for a while with all the Clinton bashing because I don't like her. More and more though I am starting to see his bias and just plain stupidity. His debate hosting was shameful and his banal questions gave no insight. He has this weird obsessions with the most idiotic things and thus would rather talk about how Thompson smells great rather than more serious issues.
The final straw was having this hack on. If you want to give someone a free hour of promotion let it be an intellectual or someone that can atleast give some insight. Have pat Buchanan or Noam Chomsky on for an hour to discuss the issues in debt. Having Coulter on proves what kind of "journalist" Matthews really is.

You'd have to be pretty hard up for guests or topics to have an old big-footed, racket-handed lesbian baba yaga with a bigger adam's apple than me on your program. That hateful lesbo apparently has nothing better to do than whore herself out; the sad thing is that there's no shortage of right-wing crackerbarrel yahoos who'll put her on in the hopes of licensing the outrageous clips of her all to turn a dime. It is a good thing she's a hermaphrodite, cause I have always wanted to tell her to go fuck herself.

I have sent this message to MSNBC:
I saw Mr. Matthews speak on the Today Show and MSNBC about Ann Coulter's appearance yesterday on Hardball. He said that Ms. Coulter is
i) a provocateur
(ii) believes that Saddam had WMD
(iii) Saddam was involved in 9/11
All this makes me ask the following question: Why give Ms Coulter air time and not a fool like Fred Phelps of "god hates fags" fame? He is a provocateur, who has equally false beliefs as Ms. Coulter, and frequently gets mentioned on the news?
I have seen a critique of Coulter's views and Mrs Edwards' phone call on MSNBC today, but I have yet to see any critique on your network about whether or not you should give Ms. Coulter a venue to express her inflammatory views.
If your reason for the different treatment of Coulter and Phelps is that Ms. Coulter sells many books and gets ratings for her appearance, then shouldn't you be honest and admit that your show is not about political dialogue, but instead about ratings?
I expect you to act as a news organization, not as the Jerry Springer Show.

See if you can get a clip of MSNBC's morning interview of Matthews and Joe Scarbrough. Matthews basically defends Ann as well as his decision to give her airtime against an unlikely foe - Scarbough who basically clowns Matthews for letting her use him to sell books and then ends the debate saying Matthews made good TV...to which he didn't really take as a compliment.
Having her on was many things but I think the rest of MSNBC thinks it was just a cheap stunt for ratings.
I stoped watching Hardball more than a year ago. Tweety sure earns his nicknames.

Stewart's show isn't LONG enough to unleash the full fury of hell she deserves. But nonetheless, the 10 minutes he'd have to destroy her would be outstanding. Every time she'd snicker (her indicator that she's scared and clueless of how to respond) or laugh, he'd be right there to hurry her along in exposing her lunacy.
I wrote an e-mail, as i watched, telling of my disgust of the so called 'news' show he put on yesterday. I don't normally write to the likes of MSNBC but i felt compelled. This type of so called journalism was performed by Geraldo and Donoghue et al in the '80's and is just the pits. The unfortunate thing is the laze faire attitude of the American people towards anything happening outside of their immediate sphere of reality and Main stream media has catered for the 30 second sound byte just like McDonalds catered for the 30 second heartburn.
Of course personal attacks are inappropriate and they bring the political and moral discourse down to the level of the republican gutter. I am shocked that this is even being debated! It reminds me of the argument over torture, i mean, it is extremely worrying when a people must debate as to the merits or otherwise of torture. Torture is wrong, end of discussion. Society has but a thin veneer and it only takes the constant chipping away of civility before we become as base as animals. America is in one deep hole and i do not see it ever getting out of it, at least in my lifetime.
M$NBC had Pat Buchanan on this morning discussing the Edwards v Coulter bash. He behaved like the apologist he always was (he didn't believe Nixon was bad either) and claimed that she meant it all in a JOKE. Give me a break but i wasn't laughing. I was paying for DISH 120 because it included MSBC. After yesterday, I swiched to DISH 100 and I no more have MSNBC. There is no reason to pay 10 bucks more to see Ann Coulter and her Lapdog Chris Mathews together. I will not even watch it for free.

I emailed Hardball and told them I expected better of them than to have right wing nuts on to walk all over their anchors without getting called on their lies and bullshit. Coulter wouldn't know a fact if she tripped over one. The fact that she outright admits to lowering the level of public discourse to that of a schoolyard should be enough to keep her out of the news. Unless of course they want to interview 4th graders.
The only reason why Malkin and Coulter even get on the air in the first place is because they're thin and 'pretty' so they appeal to all the sexually represessed conservatives out there. If they were heavy or had monobrows or something the right wing would cast them back from the harpie pit from whence they came and find other hatemongering gargoyles to put on the air.

I left an email for the producers of Hardball and Chris Matthews about this person. I could not bring myself to watch this show. I just had to tell them how I felt about having someone who brought absolutely nothing to the political process. She only brings hate, whether its about the 911 widows, Barack Obama's name and ethnicity, or the son of John and Elizabeth Edwards. How can a person say things like that to someone who has lost a child? It really bothered me and I let MSNBC know. I also asked if Ann Coulter sends the check for the marketing of her book to MSNBC or Chris Matthews personally. I'll let my fellow C&L'ers know if I get a response. hehe
Here's how I interpret this:
We (MSNBS) need some ratings and some shock value. Pee Wee Herman (Paul Rubens) isn't available. Sean Hannity and Rush are both taking baths in warm asses milk.
"Let's get Ann!" says Matthews Producer, "She'll say anything!" (Kind of like Mikey used to be for Life Cereal).
This is entertainment catering to the weakest and least educated in our population. MSNBC's sponsors should ask these questions:
1) Will the demographic currently watching this gibberish buy a new Nissan or the new Apple iPhone (probably not).
2) Do you want this kind of nonsense attached to your branding?
3) Exactly what makes Ms. Coulter a pundit or an expert on anything? Has she performed any public service or established herself as an expert of ANY kind on anything?
4) Following Ms. Coulters track record of insane statements and less than accurate predictions, is it safe to say that you want your show/name/brand associated with her?
If the channel or broadcaster has answered yes to 1, 2 or 4 and can clearly articulate Ms. Coulters shining public service, maybe it is time to find someone else with a better resume to be your producer, booking agent and sponsor rep.. Here are the people I would rather see (or see instead of Ann Coulter):
Mel Brooks (he's an easy one because he'll also say anything but he's balls out funny and a genius).
Bill Clinton
Any woman on the planet besides Ann Coulter (even Eva Braun's lifeless skull would be more interesting).
Prince Harry
Dom Deluise's sons
Feisty Political opinion from anyone off the cast of Happy Days.

The above is a highly abbreviated list. Anyone that isn't puking up the current political spew and can crank out a straight answer would be a positive in the right direction as well.
Ann Coulter is a distraction, barely entertainment and is probably seeing more airplay on blogs right now than she did on the show. Chris lost his nuts and credibility a long, long time ago. Hope the paycheck is worth it Chris!

Matthews lost me with this episode. What a hack. The News Hour with Jim Lehrer airs at the same time as Chris Matthews show in my area. Maybe it does in yours too. When I have the time to watch TV in that time slot, I'll be watching Lehrer, not Matthews.

Well said, John Amato. I had sent an email to Hardball yesterday, saying that if Matthews can have the loathsome Ann Coulter on for a full hour, then he should reciprocate by having Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn on his program for a full week. Matthews has been guilty of transgressions in the past but putting Coulter on his show for a full hour has sunk Matthews to a new low.

The thing is, Matthews has stood up to Coulter in the past. I have an older post on it. At his best Matthews can be good, but he's too much of a loose cannon and suck-up to rely on.
I also have to say, in addition to her horrible, disingenuous arguments, Coulter is just aesthetically repulsive. Her voice is so shrill and annoying, and she constantly interrupts. Elizabeth Edwards outclassed Coulter by every possible measure, and Coulter deservedly looked all the worse for it.

When Joseph Wilson, a lifelong Republican voter and donor, switched to being a Democrat after 2000, he was targeted by the Bush administration and, whether part of the organized hit / smear job or not, pilloried by the Republican propaganda media.

This morning on the Today show Tweety kept calling them Ann Edwards, like three times! I haven't watched Hardballs for years. I noticed on Drudge Yesterday that Hardball only has 300,000 Viewers. I am writing to offer comment on MSNBC's decision to grant an hour of airtime to the hateful, caustic, poisonous Ann Coulter. While I commend you for allowing Elizabeth Edwards on the show to confront Coulter, the very idea that Coulter was permitted to appear in the first place (for a full hour, no less!), is cause for concern. Mrs. Edwards said what I feel about the matter more eloquently than I ever could, but I just hope the powers that be at MSNBC will take her words to heart.
It is your decision to put Ann Coulter on the air that gives her voice, that grants her a platform to spew her hateful diatribes. Her tête-à-tête with Elizabeth Edwards exposed her as the angry, issueless shrew that she is. While Mrs. Edwards offered thoughtful, restrained, polite criticism of a woman who has 1) wished her husband dead, 2) called him a "fag" and 3) ridiculed the Edwards family's grief over the loss of a teenage son, Coulter had nothing more to add but bitter defensiveness and hate.
If you review the tape, when Elizabeth Edwards first begins speaking she says, trying for ironic humor I believe, something along the lines of "I never thought Ann and I would end up speaking in the same forum..." Coulter responds by spitting out, "Because I don't have enough money." Her reaction was like nothing if not that of an angry snake in a foul mood. It was downhill from there, culminating with Coulter's refusal to back down even from her jokes about the tragic death of the Edwards' son in a traffic accident.
This woman is a travesty. She is a vile ogress. While I am a proud proponent of free speech rights for all, Ann Coulter adds nothing of value to the national discourse and she should not be given airtime on yours or any other channel. She is a worthless, fire-breathing dragon. She should be extinguished, for the good of the nation. I would encourage you, please, never to foul your cable broadcasts with her angry, bilious presence again.
Ugh. I saw that yesterday, and made me weirdly embarassed. It also made my fucking skin crawl, watching him shrink back into his seat when faced with that screaming idiot. Matthews is a chicken, he let that moron walk all over him, and never put up a fight. What a worthless person he is, he can't even rebut debunked B.S. talking points.

Last night I had an important talk with Ann Coulter and I want to tell you what happened.
On Monday, Ann announced that instead of using more homophobic slurs to attack John, she will just wish that John had been “killed in a terrorist assassination plot.”
Where I am from, when someone does something that displeases you, you politely ask them to stop. So when I heard Ann was going to be on “Hardball” last night, I decided to call in and ask her to engage on the issues and stop the personal attacks. I told her these kinds of personal attacks lower our political dialogue at precisely the time when we need to raise it, and set a bad example for our children.
How did she respond? Sadly, perhaps predictably, with more personal attacks.
John’s campaign is about the issues—but pundits like Ann Coulter are trying to shout him down. If they will not stop, it is up to us cut through the noise. Help us fight back—please give what you can today.
When Tweety mentioned "chubby legs" I don't think he was switching topics - the topic was personal attacks, so he brought up that personal attack (or lame insult, more like) on Hillary.
Mr., er I mean "Ms." (wink, wink, nod, nod), Coulter is in love with "her" own voice and loves to create controversy for the sake of controversy (and money). Why Matthews pays any attention to "her" and lets "her" constantly interrupt and talk over others is a mystery.

Well, I happened to be listening to WGN radio in Chicago this morning. *Just for a second, because it really is audio quaalude for the elderly.* I heard a sweet old lady call up, say she watches Hardball a lot, and was "sickened" by what she saw, and that she would never watch again. The host agreed.
The thing is, Chris has done the same kind of "entertainment" for so long, that he doesn't know how to turn it off. He never talks about a "real" issue for more that 1 minute before it turns into some political hard-on show built on rampant speculation on future elections.
He's worse than bad now, he's just flat-out boring.
Oh, and Cubs are gonna win 6-straight. It's a long season.

So true. In watching some of the reactions of her "audience", there seemed to be a hesitation before they reacted as if they needed some clue as to how to react. After seeing the clips yesterday, I stayed up and watched the 3am rebroadcast. I really have no idea what Mathews was thinking as having her as a guest. He did get some digs in, but they were always 'under his breath'.

The link you give to email Hardball actually goes to yesterday's "Mail a question for Ann Coulter" page. There's an email box there, but it's limited to 300 characters -- not nearly enough for the rant that this outrage deserves.
What you want is hardball@msnbc.com -- where you can send them an actual flaming email. I just did, thusly:
I won't watch any more Coulter or O'Reilly clips (and haven't for some time now). I like reading what C&L has to say about them, but I feel I don't want to "donate my energy" to that pool by concentrating on them.
Anyway, she's a hack. She knows how to make money. She strikes me as poor white trash that made it big by being a contoversial bitch; not more.
Twinky and his bullshit network has not fouled my TV for many months now and never will. If you are disgusted with this type of programming, do not click the channels that broadcast it for any reason. Encourage your friends to stop watching those channels and offer them alternative ways to get real information. It is the only way to combat propoganda and put them out of business.

Hardblogger had a comment line last night and I quit reading at 41 comments. Of those 41 comments only 3 were positive for Coulter. I wrote two commenst slamming Matthews for having this raving lunatic on but guess what? NO negative Matthews comments were published. Only comments with Coulter or Edwards were published. So is Tweety be shielded or he just doesn't give a damn. A couple of years ago he publicly stated he doesn't read emails and made some derogatory remark about people who send him emails.
I didn't e-mail Hardball. I e-mailed all the other shows to explain why I would no longer be watching them. Then I blocked MSNBC from my cable box.

IMO, Elisabeth Edwards call to the show made Ann sweat & spew-watching the video, it was apparent that Ann was uncomfortable. The young supporters behind her were "Klan-ish". Q&A session, they all introduced themselves affliated with broken political groups to which Ann gave "whoo-whoo's". CMathews did a poor job in the name of journalism in his interview with Ann-he seemed to not followup or counter her outrageous statements but pandered to her body language and hair tossing. Cute-CMathews just got p-whipped on air.

Anyone who would pay for Ann Coulters latest book has to be living a life of hate or money to throw away. I would not give this gal five cents for her thoughts. I read what she has to say for free without having to give her any monetary proceeds from my pocket.

I will not sponsor a “news” network that would allow a person to spew hate and lies and then not give the audience the FACTS. News is about the facts. It is OK to have opinions, but based on facts, not lies, and Coulter blatantly lied. All the while, MSNBC and Matthews made no attempts to state THE FACTS. It is now a well-known fact, reiterated in numerous reports by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency, that there is no evidence of there EVER being a link between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda (see the CIA’s Kerr Report, July 29 2004). Because of this, and the hypocrisy of MSNBC in having Imus, a screwed-up humanitarian, fired, while giving a bigot and a liar with no socially redeeming value a platform from where to vomit her hate, I WILL NOT WATCH MSNBC or NBC again.
