Romney spent $300 on makeup 'consulting'
By Steve Benen Monday Jul 16, 2007 7:14amFirst, there were the haircut stories. Now, get ready for the makeup stories.
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney recorded $300 in payments to a California company that describes itself as "a mobile beauty team for hair, makeup and men's grooming and spa services."
Romney spokesman Kevin Madden confirmed that the payments — actually two separate $150 charges — were for makeup, though he said the former Massachusetts governor had only one session with Hidden Beauty of West Hills, Calif.
As Kevin put it, "Seriously. Can we just stop this stuff? Does anyone really think that the problem with presidential campaign coverage is that it isn't vapid and half-witted enough already? Jeebus."

but Mitt is already so 'HOT'
Don't vampires need special skin cream to protect them from the sun? This could be a reasonable expense.
Frist!
They attacked Edwards $400 haircut, I wonder if this will get the same attention by the "liberal" media.
Whatever the bill is, it can't cost as much as Guliani's dresses.
Chimponator @ 4:
Not a chance in hell.
See, it's okay for Mit, because he doesn't care about poor people. Get it?
Let's see. This is the same world that had countless hours of coverage on Anna Nichol Smith, her last hours, who her love-child's daddy was, countless hours of coverage on Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and what Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell think of each other. Why should presidential coverage be so different?
They attacked Edwards $400 haircut, I wonder if this will get the same attention by the “liberal” media.
HELL NO!
Ding, dong, the Four Hundred-Dollar Haircut is dead! Long live the Three Hundred-Dollar Makeup Consultation--which men need a LOT more than haircuts!
God forbid they should cover the candidates positions on things that matter. I don't give a good damn about how much makeup they use, when they use it or how much it cost. I'm more interested in comments like, I think gitmo should be doubled. Now that sort of thing gets my attention and not in a good way.
Being pretty is what getting the American masses to vote for you is all about
This whole process is so FU*KED UP that it makes me want to cry Our country is becoming a crowd of nincompoops
What NASCAR dad couldn't relate?
Got to look good when you're calling for more torture, detention and endless war!
At least the Dems have a quick rejoinder to the butt holes who bring up Edwards' haircut. I mean, at least our guy didn't go to see a beauty consultant. (Nor does he parade around in a dress and stick a big wet kiss on the [upper] cheeks of a billionaire.) (Nor does he strut around smoking a cigar and reeking of after shave with a busty trophy wife in tow.)
But, Canto de Mamba, you hit it right on the cabeza. The Repubicans won't admit it, but it's true: it's OK to attack Edwards because he dares to take up the issues of poor people; but let superhot and super aristocratic Mitt have his beauty consultation because, after all, it is every wealthy person's right to be beautiful (as long as he/she ignores the poor). (I mean, thanks to caging, the poor can't vote; so who cares?)
Punchy @ 9:
Hey, not so fast - remember, this is coming out after the big evangelical/political groups announced that Romney's "porn problem" means they have to support Thompson. There's a very good chance that this stuff is springing from exactly the same place as the Edwards stuff, and if so we'll be hearing more about it.
Hell, they can probably even get Maureen Dowd on board, unless (as we saw with Governor Schwarzenegger) Romney flutters his eyelashes at her.
I disagree. I think this haircut/beauty stuff is HIGHLY relevant. It shows they are ALL out of touch with most people, they are all SELF-ABSORBED obsessed people. All of them... and these are just the two that got caught... Imagine what Hillary Clinton spends... Barack too... I'll bet it's a lot.
In fact, this kind of stuff is what MOST people CAN relate to. If someone comes along who says they have never spent more than say $15 on a haircut (possibly Kucinich), I would vote for them, based on that alone.
So we think it's ridiculous that this is even an issue yet it's posted here? Isn't that feeding the monster?
King of Mean @ 18:
I think if you polled most wealthy people, this is the type of thing they do. Nothing abnormal about it. People get their panties in a bundle of the dumbest things. Can't we stick to the important things here?
Can someone like FAIR cover the CMSM ANBCBSNNX Romney $300 vs Edwards $400? To prove once and for all, the CMSM is NOT the "liberal media"?
I don't give a fuck what Romney spends on shit like this... and neither should anyone else. If Romney wants to pretty himself up like a $20 ho, well, I suppose that's his business. At least the "dog on the roof shitting on the car" story was relevant to some decree because it spoke to his sense of judgement (or lack thereof).
There are plenty of legitimate criticisms that can be made of Romney. But, of course, I suppose that's the difference between conservatives and liberals. We prefer to take the high road while most of the conservative media types prefer to crawl through the mud.
And, of course, they won't talk about this at all. No, no, no. That won't be "beneath" them.
Hyprocrisy, thy name is the Republican Party.
Simon,
Like a $20 whore?!?! WHOA! WHOA! WHOOOOOOOAAAAAA!
That's $300 whore, thank you very much.
There's a difference.
But we choose our leaders based on looks, so they have to use the most powerful weapons in their appearance arsenals. If Kucinich can't get elected, for example, it doesn't seem to have much to do with his intelligence, leadership abilities, and strong positions--it's because he's vertically challenged and has normal, average-person looks.
If campaigns were waged only on paper and radio (and blogs without videos), we might actually have decent representation.
But, makeup and hairstyles are all part of the game, 'cause big-time politicians are nothing but actors.
Instead of coming off the casting couch, they normally come out of board rooms. Still, it's a sort of "central casting."
It's only bad when democrats do it.
Because democrats are held to a stricter set of rules.
I demand to know which of the candidates polish their own shoes.
Punchy @ 9:
My thoughts exactly.
Kevin is wrong. I think after all the press John Edwards got, we need to hear several hundred more reports over the next two weeks about Mitty. Fair and balanced.
Hidden beauty?
They didn't find it and, believe me, there's no hope.
You can plaster a facade on a fraud, but in the end he's still a fraud.
Nick: "I demand to know which of the candidates polish their own shoes".
Answer: My bet is on Mike Gravel.
It truly is ridiculous.
I do have one more comment on this subject. If Thompson is spending a lot of money on his looks, he's getting ripped off big time.
King of Mean @ 18:
If George Bush said in 2004 that he never paid more than $15.00 for a haircut you would have voted for him????
If somebody said, "I understand that I'll make mistakes and I expect - no I demand - the the other branches of government will keep me from making profound mistakes. And in return I will do the same for them" that would get my vote.
anything that reveals Willard Mitt Romney for the shallow being he is, is a good thing...
I wouldn't have voted for bush if he had said he cut his own hair.
I read further in the story that Willard Mitt, the Fraud ex-governor, apparently tried to hide the expense. Instead of disclosing it fully, instead the campaign listed the disbursement:
Perfect. Is this not illegal? How is it the fraud ex-governor can spend campaign money (matching federal funds) and not list it properly in its reporting? I should think the FEC would have some interest to see if there are other expenses so cloaked.
The fraud ex-governor will fit right into the shoes of the current mal-administrator who is, as we know, a forthright fellow.
Quick, call John Solomon! Got a hot tip for him!
...seriously... two $150 charges for makeup consulting? So what? Completely normal. Didn't care about Edwards' haircut, don't care about this except to the degree it doesn't get covered by the So-Called Liberal Media.
Breck Girl Romney!
Mitt wears makeup and Rudy wears dresses. Quite a picture for the party of family values.
No no no...
They won't cover this story by taking the moral high ground: "This is just SO an non-story. The Dems are playing party politics and trying to smear a Repub! OUTRAGEOUS!"
Or they will say that the story was leaked by a Clinton/Barack/Edwards campaign staffer and try a reverse smear...
Chimponator @ 4:
None where I live. Right now (10am) we have a choice between:
Neal Boortz, Glenn Beck or Michael Savage rerun from last night.
It is like that all day; 3 right wing shills.
Wow, the Thompson oppo team has been busy.
sh@dow @ 43:
About half the amount Rudy needs for a night out in Queens.
sh@dow @ 43:
About .0000000000000000000000000000000001 of what Rudy needs to cover up his 9-11 lies.
sh@dow @ 47:
Or Rudy in drag.
Wow, Mitt Romney the metrosexual.
He's probably still pumped because he didn't have to spend any money acquiring his animal cruelty chops.
the Fox memory holers will suddenly forget about Mitt after spending weeks attacking Edwards
Romney needs to stop running for president and seriously concider taking the price is right job. He looks like a young Bob Barker.
You're right, it is vapid. But I'm sure Commander CooCoo wouldn't want it known how much TAXPAYER money he spends on custom tailoring for his dozens of resolute daddy outfits.
Bet this doesn't make it to the MSM, or even cable television "news".
It'll probably show up on TDS or Colbert :>)
between his chin and his hair, he's got the women vote already...
Wait until they see how much he spends on Aqua Velva.
Jeebus? Is that a cute way to take the lord's name in vain?
http://dogsagainstromney.blogspot.com/
Tim in Japan @ 23:
Yeah , ask Vitter , he knows !
Doh!
Give the Dog Torturer a break. He was looking a little haggard. It's hard keeping up with a bunch of wives.
"isn’t vapid and half-witted enough already? Jeebus.”
what is this dimwitted jeebus nonsense?
I bet you won't see that pussy Sean Hannity discussing this on Faux News like he did John Edwards $400 dollar haircut over and over again. Every time I'd flip through the channels and would stop of FOX just to see what they were discussing on their Fair and unBalanced "news" program - there he was with that idiot smirk on his face.
Its just lipstick on a pig. But really, these candidates have money and they have to be in front of the camera. $300 is just chump change. Lets talk about his real problems like his fantasy of doubling gitmo or his torture fetish.
baby jesus wonders if Mitt uses the talking salamander
as a policy consultant, maybe the magic sea gull?
baby jesus does not approve of male make up except for David Bowie
Chimponator @ 4:
Wondering same thing. At least we have some "ammo" on this issue, now. Since it's a Republican doing it, however, I'm sure it's going to be alright now.
Pete Bogs @ 54:
Yiiichhh! Not this chickie!
To paraphrase Romney:
You know I think John Edwards was right. There are two Americas. There is the America where people pay $300 for makeup and then there is everybody else."
jr @ 50:
Well, if they're not going to totally boycott FN, then some Dems need to get on there and get nasty and make them talk about it! And most definitely do this with important issues as well. Hit 'em first, often and hard with the facts, before HanO'Reilly get a chance to splurt out nonsense until after OUR point is made.
pine nut @ 65:
Rusty Shackleford @ 59:
I don't think a bunch of wives was Haggard's problem.
Matt Sludge has a 'Submit Tip' link on his page, so I did. Here's what I just sent him:
"BREAKING!!
DEVELOPING HARD!!!
MUST CREDIT POLITICO!!!
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0707/4982.html
Romney spent $300 on makeup 'consulting'
!!!!!!!!!
Sirens, Matt, don't forget the SIRENS!!!"
This what I got back:
"MESSAGE RECEIVED... WILL CONSIDER AND INVESTIGATE... RETURN TO DRUDGE REPORT..."
Let's see if he follows through, not that I'm gonna hold my breath on this.
~Nyc
ysbaddaden @ 69:
For the Crystal Methodist, one wife was too many.
Three hundred dollars for axle grease? What the heck does this Frankenstein look like without make up?
Personally, I would rather have the candidates pay for hair cuts and facials than to witness Wolfowitz lick his comb in his attempt to be "a regular guy". Unfortunately, style over substance goes a long way in our country. The same talking heads that make an issue out of this non issue are the same ones that get primped prior to their mugs going on the air.
Chimponator @ 4:
Nope. You won't hear a peep out of the reich-wing MSM.
AJ Fan @ 2:
Yea he is Count Duckula
Oh, what a pansy!
What a vain, self-absorbed Fancy-boy!
I [straightening dramatically and peering into the distance with a steely and very manly look] "LOL" in Romney's general direction!
Silly, lace-cuffed, panty-waisted, parrrrfumed.....
Hold on! I forgot: I don't care about this stuff! Whew! So good to be a sane person. Let the substance deprived GOoPers take the cheap shots at haircuts and such; we "libruls" have better things to do.
Good find, Steve. A good laugh at the GOP starts my day right.
So, we have learned this week that reich-wingers like to wear diapers and make-up. How telling....
Dr. Matt @ 77:
And pay for sex in men's toilets. You can't let that one slip by.
jbless @ 75:
No, you're thinking of Mark Foley.
nitehawk @ 78:
Well played. I forgot about that one.
Link to the rest of the story does not work.
Steve, what I see here is you engaging in a double standard.
See, you are saying that the news should stop reporting shit like this, yet at the very same time you say this, you are reporting it yourself.
Oh, and it isn't a proper excuse to say that YOU are not the one initially reporting this, that it came from elsewhere and you are simply repeating what is going on OUTSIDE of your domain. Things don't occur in a vacuum however, and the "other" news media are reporting this for the same reason you are. Don't you know how the MSM works yet? One news program reports it, and then everyone else (before fact checking), repeats what they see on those other programs, etc etc.
The fact that you are claiming innocence by only repeating what "they" are sayng is like repeating "nappy headed hoes" on national television and then claiming innocence because you are not the one who originally said it. It is offensive to HEAR. Just like what you are posting here is stupid to REPEAT. If you don't like what you are hearing in the media, DON'T repeat it, just like what you do with Ron Paul.
Pretty sad when a male candidate needs make-up lessons to appeal to the masses.
They bitched about a haircut, which most of us need once in a while, but make-up?
oops, I forgot, Americans vote for the prettiest, not the one who has a brain between his ears. Bush is a good example!
Dr. Matt @ 80:
There are so many republican scandals its hard to keep track without a scorecard.
Joementum @ 13:
Lol:)
Private Freedom @ 82:
I was wondering when someone would finally mention that!
Hi, I'm a makeup artist for tv & movies and $300 for is CHEAP. My day-rate is $350.
Hate to break it to you, but every man in front of a camera wears makeup.
Even Chuck Norris.
Edwards should hire Mitt's people and save $100
exit7a @ 1:
Must be his woolen underwear. In summer? Can you imagine?
*
nitehawk @ 84:
It will take more than a scoreboard. We need a friggn' electronic database.
nitehawk @ 84:
Hard? I would say impossible. Is there one GOOD site? I only know this one about GOP PERVERTS AND PEDOPHILES ~
::mwah:: @ 87:
Chuck Norris doesn't "wear" make-up. The make-up leaps on to Chuck to mask the blood of his victims.
Craig @ 19:
It's not the make-up - it's the hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy on this scale doesn't get a free pass.
*
Tim in Japan @ 23:
$20 whores can't afford the diapers.
*
Dr. Matt @ 92:
These politicans are not making a movie. They are suppose to run this country!
nitehawk @ 45:
Anyone have Giulia's bra size? I have some clothing to donate ~~
*
As usual with The Politico, nobody asked the question that should have come up immediately. Who, in the Republican field, leaked the story? The story isn't news. Who's pushing the story is. Some Republican wants to take Romney down a peg. Thompson?
Pete Bogs @ 54:
There's nothing good looking about this man - he's revolting - he's plastic. He's a Ken doll.
*
sh@dow @ 47:
Rachel Maddow has a picture up in her video blog that shows his remarkable likeness to Nosferatu. I can't find the picture she used - but the likeness is amazing.
*
Trittydi @ 98:
Have you looked between his legs?
The reichwing are no longer looking for a father figure, but are instead looking for a dada figure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0BVX4UqGgA
LMAO! if David Bowie deserves make-up, what about the guys from Kiss?. But no, his press guy made a valid comment 'isn't the election coverage vapid enough already?' (paraphrased) I mean, don't get me wrong, I wish nothing more than to taunt the phreakish loser until the stage makeup melts off his face, especially after the democratic hair fiasco... but more and more people are looking to these blogs for the non-sensationalist truth they cannot find in the media anymore... we should humor them out of respect. who knows, maybe one day C&L will be one of the more reliable internet news sources one day..? That being said, let the festivities of outlining reasons he should never hold office again continue! ^_^
Wise_Fool @ 101:
When did C&L ever claim to be an "Internet news source"?
The Yes Men http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Yes_Men go all over the world pretending to be ultra rich magnates, and they clip each other's hair with electric clippers. People never notice they aren't who they say they are. No one *needs* to spend $400 for a hair cut. No one.
No one did. I'm suprised you got that particular message, given it wasn't my words. I'm saying that people do come here to get non-sensational truth, and that if it (the site) becomes popular enough then maybe one day it might become something like that... just something to think about, not get upset over. :)
exit7a @ 1:
Thanks a lot, that little gem just made me hoick back up the 50 bucks worht of sushi I had for lunch.
Romney shoulda consulted Guilliani.
They could do each other's lip stick, and check the coverage by puckering in the mirror.
$300..... hope it came with a happy ending!
Of course it's vapid. And the vapidity should stop... but it can stop after this runs for a while first, because it's politically useful as a counter for all the stupidity about Edwards. Citing this Romney story is a good way of arguing to stop the vapidity. "Yes, Edwards had an expensive haircut, and Mitt Romney spent $300 on makeup consultation. Can we move to something of substance now?"
