CNN's Jacki Schechner takes a look at the impact YouTube is having on politics and the campaign.
(h/t Scarce)Sam Seder waxes poetic on the importance of video
(h/t BraveNewFilms)I love this. For me, the "YouTube-ization" of politics has as much to do with empowering all citizens and dis-empowering the media from furthering their narratives as it does taking some of the tight control of candidates' messages from them.

Isn't Jackie being fired at CNN?
What is CNN doing? Bringing in Laura Ingraham?
Uhm, it's been said that the republicans are already rigging the 2008 election; fooling around with the elections again (they can't win fairly). Heard on Rachel Maddow's show today:
"The Republican Party's lawyer in California has proposed a ballot initiative that posed the biggest hurdle we've seen yet to getting a Democrat in the White House."
This is scary stuff. Here's the story:

yes!!!! this is a perfect way to take our country back!!!!!!!!!!
Video killed the radio star! ;-)
It only works for the rest of us, the 29%ers find it to be lies. They only believe in their king and his court.
Outspoken Calif. Editor Shot to Death
Chauncey Bailey, 57, was killed around 7:30 a.m., Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said. Witnesses told police a man wearing a mask shot Bailey multiple times and then fled.
Isn't something that usually happens in banana republics?
In reference to a thread posted today Russia sells arms to Iran, meanwhile the US will sell to Saudi.
Any questions?
The good thing about this is that every one carries around a video recorder these days. The republicans are the ones that have a lot to hide. Shine the light people.
Good news!

Also, Rockefeller continues to think violence on tv is indecent, but not our violence in Iraq. Libya gets another opportunity to blow up more planes. Thanks for lifting the embargo, Dumbya. Another marine murder. I give him six months before he walks. For some reason less Americans like the Court. Hillary thinks Obama is "dumb", because he wants to hold off on nuking people he doesn't like. Officials knew the bridge was broken over 15 years ago! Doctors are taking a hypocritical oath. The FBI will continue the War on Drugs, but not when it comes to recruiting agents.

Actually, they used to control it and they don't like it because they've lost control of it (thanX to the blogs, and things like the uplift mofo party plan.)

Wow, killing no one is satisfied with killing real journalists in Iraq, now real journalists are getting killed over here? Is that what our fighting men and women are fighting for?
Many sympathies to Mr. Bailey's family.
LL, it's not like it only began today. Remember the Denver talk show host they assassinated in Denver a couple of decades ago?
KO's correct on Mike Stark's mistake, IMHO. It's a two wrongs don't make a right situation. I'm certain Mike will rise above the flames and prove that we can do better.
Pity the poor GOP. They just about perfected the technique of packaging empty suits and cardboard cut-outs as credible candidates. They even put George "The Clothes Have No Emperor" Bush in the White House.
For several years, the most important people in GOP campaigns were the video directors, and the best candidates were the most telegenic.
But as George Allen learned, those days are gone. A little more than a year ago, Senator Allen was cruising to reelection in Virginia and was an early favorite to win the 2008 GOP Presidential nomination. Born and raised in Southern California and of partial Jewish descent, Allen was nonetheless packaged as "good ole boy" from the South.
Then he stepped in "macaca" on video. The video went viral, and Allen's campaign got sick and died. Goodbye drugstore cowboy, Hello Senator Webb.
No longer can candidates brag about their committment to civil rights during the day and then attend Klan rallies at night. They can't present themselves as reasonable, thoughtful moderates during interviews and debates and then chug kool-aid at a wingnut kegger.
Now to be fair, the new rules apply to the Democrats too. And it's not like they were innocent of trying to package candidates, they just weren't as good at it.
It's the GOP that has the most to worry about, though. Their base consists of the super-rich and a bunch of Luddites and Flat Earthers. And their candidates consist of hypocrites, holy-rollers, the callow, the shallow, and the hard to swallow.
Good God, nice mug shot of Mike Stark...was it from a police line-up?
I agree with Keith O on that one. Something about the "pervert" sign that just made my skin crawl. Not funny, not something I would do to anybody.
Keith nailed that one, spot on.
Republicans try to scare the House away from cheap medicine.
May I just say that my opinion of the Minnesota Bridge collapse are Bush's tax cuts at work. Let's cut more taxes and see if we can get the same amount of electricity as they have in Baghdad, shall we? (2 hours a day) That would make us really productive, huh?
LL, that's Cheney's argument about the Iraqi Parlement taking off for a month, isn't it? He said that it's better than them taking off for 2 months! 2 hours of electricity is better than only 1 hour!!!! ;-)
Stanley Rosenthal @ 26:
Yes, I remember Stanley... but in light of "real" journalism being squashed in this country by the corporate media... and I'm not talking about the latest report on Paris or Lindsay...I think that it takes on an even more ominous tone. A chilling effect. I am not naive enough to think that the perp wasn't some hateful nutcase with nothing better to do, but the effect is still the same, isn't it?

But then again. MTV killed the videos.
But now the internet is bringing them back from the dead.
At best, YouTube and the Internet has been a mixed bag.
After all, it was because of YouTube we lost Howard Dean as a front runner. Someone who COULD have beaten Bush in an election. Simply because he said, "Yeehaw" in a convention.
Not our finest moment.

Tequila @ 15:
Woweee... did you ever get suckered by a GOP talking point. Bush had as much to do with lifting the Libyan embargo as the light switch in my bedroom has to do with the price of tea in China.
First of all, Khaddafi has been pursuing a "sunshine policy" ever since the other Arab nations snubbed him when he called for help as Reagan called airstrikes on Tripoli. For about 15 years, he was saying "look I'm a nice guy now", and since this was an international embargo several other countries decided to review and lift the embargo... Bush just followed what other nations did (in one of those rare moments that he didn't do something against everyone else).
So the spin doctors touted this as all of Bush's awesome work, and that he was able to scare Khaddafi into submission with some saber rattling... which, of course, is total bullshit.
LibertyLover @ 31:
And to thing Baghdad got 8-12 hours of electricity per day right after we invaded them, and a few more hours before we invaded.
Jack @ 47:
Dude,
With all due respect, YouTube had nothing to do with it, in that it didn't even exist at that time.
I was in Des Moines, Iowa, in January of 2004, working for the Howard Dean Presidential campaign as a phone banker and canvasser during the caucuses.
I still have my orange hat, badge, and pics of me at the Girl Scout camp we were put up at by the campaign, if you doubt me.
YouTube* wouldn't even exist for another full year after that, see the Wiki entry below.
What happened to Howard in Iowa was a modern day, electronic, political, lynching/assassination by our Corporate Media, which ended up biting them square on the ass anyways, as evidenced by the clean sweep of the 2006 Mid-Terms, which Dean engineered via his 50 State Strateregery as Chair of the DNC, which he couldn't have done if he had won the Presidency, since he would have been busy attending to other matters, like, y'know, competently running the country, and stuff.
So there.
How you like us now, Fox News?
heheheh.

Actually, I think they "retired" them (ie: sent them to the junkyard) when the leases expired. While it is not unusual for car companies to do this, it is unusual to this to all cars of a certain model... often what happens is the company resells it as a used car or takes it back to their R&D lab to do tests for improving future models.
Most people get suckered into the lease deals at dealerships and think they bought and own the car... but that magical word "lease" means that the company still owns the car, not you.
Good lord, how much more vain can people get? YouTube and the internet are reshaping politics? I don't think so. The Corporate Media are still trying to brainwash ideas into people's heads, and you all swallow it hook, line and sinker. YouTube, DailyKos, Huff Post, or any other site are not going to sway anyone. They attract trolls, flamers and people who completely agree with their political points. Nothing more. The same people that voted for Shrub, Shrub Sr., Ronnie Raygun, etc, would still vote for them again in a heartbeat if the Corporate Media browbeats 'em with exposure to the same "leading candidates". Nothing an internet site does will change that.

The longest journey begins with but a single step.
You can't really lead from the rear, now can you? Show people you mean what you say, and give an extra 10%. Soon, your friends will start to do so as well. Who knows, maybe it will start a groundswell of support for paying extra taxes!
You know, the same government that builds these bridges also wages wars like the one in Iraq. You can't have one without the other.
Any government big enough to give you everyyhing you want is big enough to steal everything you have.

Comparing the 'net to television? No. Who watches Faux Snooze? People who agree with their political ideals. Who posts on Huff Post? People who agree with their political ideals. Who votes ReTHUGlican? People who agree with their political ideals. You can't change people's opinions with an internet site, a television station, or a radio program. Only sheep are that easily manipulated.
NChomsky @ 62:
LibertyLover @ 57:
The problem is, of course, that 37% of Americans think they're in the upper 1% of net worth. This was from a study done in 2000. The 1% range is around $2 million net worth... meaning investments, house worth minus mortgages and all loans and debts.
Oops.
Pound Foolish @ 63:
Here's the Bush disaster plan:
1. Defund preventing the disaster.
2. Disaster occurs.
3. Say you're sorry, but blame the state and local govt you defunded.
4. Bush related companies swoop down and provide a lot of nothing for a lot of tax $$$$$$$.
5. Bush goes to disaster site, and does "the Macarena", and says he used to "party" there in college, running interference for the vulture companies.
6. Laura Bush exploits a bunch of little kids by sticking little American flags made in China in their hands, and slaps t-shirts on them saying, "We're stem cell babies".
Sound familiar???????????????
You're wrong about audio and video. It was Allen being heard saying Maccaca that got him trouble. Video without audio is just surveillance. Audio has always been the more important of the two ever since talkies came around.
I don't know why people have a hard time understanding this. But, they do, and that explains why so many internet vid clips have poor audio, or out of sync audio. It's a fundamental mistake. It's also why we hear horrendous audio during press conferences, speeches (some), and staged appearances.
There is absolutely no excuse for our nation to be pumping out rancid sound for the rest of the world to hear. Its embarrassing. My advice for all politicians, or anyone who would like to be perceived as intelligent, hire a professional audio tech.

A federal intelligence court judge earlier this year secretly declared a key element of the Bush administration's wiretapping efforts illegal. So what do the Busheviks do, ask Congress to make their illegal activities legal. If Reid and Pelosi give Bush and Cheney more totalitarian power, they might as well resign as leaders of their respective houses. Bush and Cheney should be impeached, not emboldened to conduct more spying on Americans.

There are 70,000 deficient bridges in the US. It would take an estimated $188B to fix them all. That sounds like a lot of money until you compare it to what our President, who’s taking the opportunity to make political hay of the tragedy in Minneapolis, is flushing every day on his adventure in Iraq.
Or what we spend in a 1 year and a half in Iraq....(which is currently 10 Billion a month or 340 million a day....$4,060 per second) So tell those right wingnuts to shove it up their ignorant ass...

the absolute proof that bush had no intentions of leaveing iraq, that they built fourteen permanate military bases , and built an embasy that is bigger then fourteen football fields, beyond any doubts this was planned long before they decided to attack our own people on that day you cant mention! as such this bunch of thugs deserve to be tried by honest men convicted and hung in that order!
YouTube-ization of politics will bring our sycophatic mainstream media to their knees - finally! It's been clear for a long time that the corporately-owned media is being paid as spinmeisters and puppet "tools" of the Bush Regime. The people no longer trust what they hear on the television or read in the newspapers.
Informed individuals, instead, go to the internet (damn those internets anyway!!) for the Truth and verification. YouTube will keep this government honest because they can no longer shove things under the proverbial rug. The people find out their dirty deeds almost as soon as they are committed.
There's "no hidin' now" for this twisted regime!
Having said that, now let's bring these criminals to the justice they so deserve! Armed with the facts, the people need to press Congress to move swiftly and expediently toward impeachment.
