Countdown: The Netroots' Influence on the '08 Campaign
By Nicole Belle Monday Aug 06, 2007 12:28pm![]()
Keith Olbermann and Chuck Todd discuss the impact that the netroots (as exemplified by the appearance of the Democratic presidential contenders at YearlyKos last weekend) are having on politics and the '08 campaign.

The "old guard" politicians and commentators like the republican presidential candidates and Bill O'Reilly are scared s***less of the Internet, since they can't dominate it like they have TV and talk radio.
That's why O'Reilly makes up crap about Kos, and tries to keep democrats from going to the Kos convention.
Survey of public attitudes makes Kucinich the frontrunner
August 3, 2007
CLEVELAND, OH – In the political equivalent of a “blind taste test” taken by more than 67,000 participants, an independent website surveying public attitudes on various issues is reporting that Ohio Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich is the first choice of a phenomenal 53% of respondents.
No other candidate, Democrat or Republican, even reaches double digits.
The website (http://www.dehp.net/candidate/ ) has been asking respondents to express and rank their opinions on 25 different issues – the war in Iraq, health care, the environment, Patriot Act, etc... Those taking the survey vote only on the issues, not for or against any individual candidate. The 67,000-plus responses were then correlated.
As of this morning more than 35,600 respondents were “in sync” with Kucinich on the issues. Democratic front-runner Senator Hillary Clinton was the first-place choice of only about 2,400 respondents (3.6%). Other leading candidates fared even worse: Senator Barack Obama (3%), and former Senator John Edwards (1.3%)
“When people vote exclusively on the issues that are important to them, without being influenced by name recognition, celebrity, or millions of dollars in advertising, Congressman Kucinich wins in a landslide,” his campaign said today.

not to mention the perennial losers and serial-spinners: james carville, bobby shrum, tad devine, mary matalin, frank 'the putz' luntz, etc. -- really the whole industry of slick PR goons. they HATE it when the people really do have a say and a voice. they rely on the "news" industry to bolster their pseudo-clout.
they have made a living off of manipulating people's perceptions for their own gain. of course, hardball and meet the press and face the nation, etc. will still rely on those that have, time and time again, proven to be completely insolated from reality.
the netroots, blogs, chat rooms, etc.--if not quashed by the political machines--might just yet save our democracy...
Frankl Luntz and his talking toupee. Clearly an America hater.

Anchor Baby Malkin is nothing but glorified blogger, but O'Reilly bends over to kiss her arse because they share the same twisted and perverse ideologies.
2 Larry from C Says: “When people vote exclusively on the issues that are important to them, without being influenced by name recognition, celebrity, or millions of dollars in advertising, Congressman Kucinich wins in a landslide,” his campaign said today."
in other words, kucinich has absolutely no chance of winning, as sad as that might be.
of course i think this goes back to the 1996 telecommunications act, but some think i am crazy as a loon...
They often talk about bloggers as if they are some group of people in a mental hospital. Okay, some may be, but we aren't. :)
Dr. Matt @ 6:
Exactly, exactly, exactly! I couldn't have said it better myself... :o)
The only influence the netroots have is sending millions of dollars into Democrats pockets, who then go to Washington, vote to remove your freedoms. The power and influnce of the netroots were nullified by the FISA vote.
Democrats don't care about you. That is what they said with the passage of the FISA bill.
They had Joe Klein on Not-Scarborough with Tucker's butt-boy Villie Kleist. Joe Klein, while admitting the power of the blogs vis a vis the DLC, opined they could be harmful for the national campaigns. The DLC is more wise, puissant, and effective. What an asshole.
AnnCoultersMoustache @ 10:
don't sell short how the blogs bring people together. and (forgetting about how politicians make promises to get in office and then screw us for corporations to stay in) there have been many things that netroots have been able to accomplish.
the biggest, IMHO, is making the corporate MSM pay attention to stories they would normally gloss over: for instance, gannon/guckert, valerie plame, etc. also, groups like moveon.org have been helped tremendously through the blogs. it has helped to coalesce a movement that is shunned by the traditional media.
forget about the politicians; the blogs and netroots are for citizens, and for our empowerment. the politicians will continue to ignore the people at their own risk. before blogs and open forums, the DC slickies were able to get away with a lot more, but now that the blogs act like a microscope there is less room for the crooks to operate.
The reich-wing has the radio and Left has the blogs, yet we don't hear 24/7 anything from the [reich-wing] MSM about radio.

Um, Kucinich doesn't take money from AIPAC, as far as I know. If you can provide proof he does, I'd like to see it.
the gatekeepers influence is on its way to the glue factory
Samson- @ 12:
I am well aware of Moveon.org since I volunteered every day for 2 weeks and made over 1000 phone calls. The passing of the FISA bill nullified the power of the netroots. The media would have covered the Plame case without us bitching about it, and what effect did the Gannon attention have? Z E R O
So when you boil it down, the netroots and myself included, where played for our pocket books, under the guise that the Democrats actually give a sh*t about what we write and what we say. They don't care. The FISA vote showed that NO, Donating to you Act Blue page every two weeks for 6 months, making thousands of phone calls, going door to door, writing thousands of words on the Tubes, writing letters, doing Vlogs on Youtube, is all a bunch of BS.
The Democrats will never receive another penny from me. The leaders of the party failed, The big guns running for POTUS showed a complete lack of leadership. If they want to lead this country, how come they can't even get their fellow Democrats to vote responsibly. Where is the leadership there?
The netroots have been bilked for millions, and we were stabbed in the back Friday night while most of them were getting trashed at a hotel in Chicago.
Pathetic.
Archae @ 1:
You're correct on both counts. It's time for the netroots to kick that republicant a$$! They are scared so badly that all they can counter with is namecalling and lies.
K.O.'s in Chicago for the AFL/CIO debate tonight, which will be outdoors (huh?*).
So far the rain's held off, but it's been threatening on and off.
Obama and Edwards are planning rallies at 4 o'clock near Soldier Field.
* In fact, the meeting was switched from McCormick Place West to the massive open-air stadium when ticket requests soared beyond expectations, union officials said. More than 17,000 tickets have been handed out to unions in the Chicago area, added officials with the half-million-member Chicago Federation of Labor.
The MSM can no longer dismiss the "blogisphere". Today, I get all my news from The nation, Kos, Firedoglake, TPM, Huffington Post, and of course, C&L. I used to keep NYTimes and CNN on my RSS list, but I've dropped them. The only MSM I visit is BBC.
AnnCoultersMoustache @ 17:
I'm very hesitant to feel the same way as you do, but it's not far off. I feel so betrayed by Dems.

IMPEACH these WAR CRIMINAL already!
They are giving AMERICA a BAD BAD NAME
dr zaius @ 20:
Let me correct one tiny mistake in your post. There is no Mainstream Media, only a Corporate Media. Nothing is shown on CNN (or ABC, CBS, NBC etc.) that their corporate sponsors do not approve first.
Its important to use the proper wording and not fall victim to "Rovespeak". The most common mistakes I see are:
(a) Corporate Media, not Mainstream Media
(b) Illegal Warrantless Wiretap, not Terrorist Surveillance Program
(c) Iraq Occupation not Iraq War
Is it just me, or does the sound cut off a few seconds into the WMV?
I know it came off the tailgating comment, but Keith and the interviewee made workers out to be "schlubs" in my opinion. Talking about Paps Blue Ribbon and such. Only a very small number of people are going to party, I would guess.
AnnCoultersMoustache @ 10:
It is clear that SOME Democrats don't care about us. Those are the ones we need to REPLACE.
I took that poll and another very similar one. Kucinich scored highest with me, too. However, he is not my choice. Because we are so far out of the mainstream. He will never be nominated. Keep in mind, rethugs will be voting, too and Independents sometimes skew more right, than far-left. When it comes to my vote, I will be practical, rather than idealistic. So, if it's HRC, I'll hold my nose and vote for her.
Larry from C @ 2:
Well, I'll be...it's weird that most of the sentiment here seems to favor Edwards. Perhaps this is because so many of us actually like Kucinich better (despite the anti-abortion stance, in my case) but think Edwards has a better chance and so have expressed a preference for Edwards out of desire to be practical?
Larry from C @ 23:
Very good.
anonymous @ 29:
+1
I'll pay more attention to those from now on as well.

Hey White-Collar-Bushytailed-Democrat-Staffer-Monitoring-Lib-Blogs-for-Hints-On-What-The-Base-Is-Thinking,
You reading all of this? You've seen the theme in mutiple posts? You getting it? Tell your boss, whoever it may be, that the Democratic Pary has really screwed the pooch this time. It doesn't even matter if you work for one of "the good ones". This backlash is coming back at the entire party. Write it down, in crayon if it helps you, and pass it on.
Bonkers @ 30:
i submit that "iraq occupation" should be referred to as "Occupation: Iraqi Land"
Netroots gave us a "new" Congress. Who's going to replace the netroots? if the netroots can give us a bettern DNC, or a replacement that takes their oath seriously, I might be concerned about what the netroots might do. They don't appear to be giving us solutions, just more of the same.
Big yawn.
Anyone else having trouble with the audio cutting out about ten seconds into the clip - and staying out?

Sorry guys, but Kucinich won't be the Nominee, nor even a sustantial influence on the Platform, despite "Netroots."
Hillary (power) will be the nominee with Wes Clark as VP--Obama to be in the cabinet.
