Mid-Day Open Thread: Wordpress blocked in Turkey
Don't Block the Blog rallied against Pakistan's banning of Blogspot in February 2006. Now Don't Block is fighting Turkey's banning of Wordpress. Ali Eteraz has more on the Turkish situation. H/T for the story and the badge to Geography, Telecast.

why are ALL of our "allies" in the mideast so against "freedom"?
why not try to encourage democracy in our "allie"s" countries, instead in Iraq our "enemy".
our real enemy is Israel and Washington D.C. 3700 americans from poor and middle class families would still be alive.
take note thast as we write, there is the 3rd Turkish formula one grand prix race being held this weekend. There is also a Bradn Brix of Bahrian, Malaysia and one in Dubai.
ALl Muslim countries, yet very little press coverage of these events.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. They have some very smart hackers over there.

Because it's not dehumanizing.
[...] and Liars has just put up the story of the Turkey block on Wordpress. With this, I can officially chill out and go back to the very mundane matters of my own life. This [...]
Ha! Of course, when I go to mainstream Turkish news websites, there's no mention of this travesty. I think there were a couple of articles in the past couple of days. Instead I get to see some model shake her ass for some soldiers in Marmaris http://www.milliyet.com.tr/2007/08/24/son/sontur48.asp
The Turkish blogs are really the only place where I can get real news about what's going on over there. Very, very edgy and vibrant stuff.
This creationist nut has gotten the Turkish courts to ban ALL the wordpress blogs because they were "defaming" him (using the anti-defamation law). Utter chaos, as usual.
But um, Turkey is really nice. Please come and visit. We've got nice beaches and historical stuff and... kilims... :)
Is the EU going to grant entry to Turkey with this sort of shit going on?
Of course, Germany's control of speech (vis a vis Nazis, Scientologists) may set a precedence.
Turkey gets a lot of undue respect from the world, especially from the United States since it's essentially the gateway to the middle east; with U.S. bases in Turkey.
I'm glad the EU is still balking at allowing that country to join, since their record on human rights is terrible, including the Turkish governments' denial of the Armenian Genocide in 1915.
I think a blind eye has been placed on Turkey with their veil of modern civility. Just scratch under that skin and you'll find a regressive nation.
I Am A Banana @ 8:
I think a blind eye is turned to any inconvenient genocide, by whomever is calling the shots in the discourse at the time. But that isn't the point. Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, even if the government is supposed to be secular (and is, as much as the US). This has nothing to do with whether it ought to qualify for the EU. Germany, as someone else quoted, is not bastion of free speech.
China blocks the blog, too.
miss_kitty @ 7:
People are sick of this issue in Turkey as well as the EU. I think it's high time to dump the whole issue and everyone to go their separate ways. EU accession has been a good means for Turkey to reform laws, but not a necessary or realistic ends. I kind of agree with I Am A Banana, but I think that's a bit too much of a generalization. For anyone who has visited Turkey will realize, it's a very complicated and vibrant place. But we have a long way to go. Jingoism is a serious problem right now, among other things.
As a Turk living in Europe, I don't see any hope for Turkey to enter the EU, not with such a large population that would have so much voting power. Also, the Ottomans did make it to the gates of Vienna once upon a time. That's always left a sour taste in people's mouth in Europe, although they do have us to thank for the croissant and coffee culture. :)
I produced a film about Turkey's military interventions and how the military has served to protect and patrol this fragile "democracy." (www.elifsavas.com/coup) Turkey is endlessly fascinating and really provides a lovely test case for judging how one's ideals can butt heads with practical exigencies... my wife's blog uses Wordpress and is still active, but it's housed on her server, not on Wordpress's - which is a good thing. ;)
Does that mean no internet orders for hashish?
a young lady asks george bush who the private militrary contractors (called mercenaries in old speak) answer to.
here's george explaining: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=2a5_1187933994
ha ha. boy wouldn't you love to have a beer with this guy?
Wait... aren't we supposed to be praising Turkey for blocking Wordpress?! I mean, after all, liberal Democrats like us want to institute Sharia Law everywhere and dress everyone in Burkas, according to Melanie Morgan.

Well! A Hearty thanks for the coffee and croissant. I could not live without the coffee.
Reconstitution did a post a while back on a site you can visit to check if a URL is blocked in China. A great post from a great blog.
[...] a huge blow, as WordPress (the blog software this blog and millions of others is hosted on) was banned in Turkey, due to the work of the criminal nutjob Harun Yahya (Who also goes by the name Adnan Oktar). This [...]
The Fed and Big Money are buying time before the shit hits the fan. The Fed is letting banks (who, of course, loan to hedge funds and other risk-takers) dump their subprime garbage into their (Fed's) vaults so that down the line the Fat Cats don't take the losses, the taxpayers will.
Total bullshit!! and Washington and Wall Street know exactly what they are doing. This is a huge bailout that is yet on the public's radar. (Of course, most of the 'public' is watching American Idol!).

Turkey apparently isn't serious about wanting to join the European Union. This will set their application to join back by a couple of years. Idiots.

What a dipshit.
It would take many more than A beer to tolerate him. I don't drink but I think about 1000 beers should do it. (Is that enough to make me unconscious?)
Does anyone know about the rumors on the blogs about Castro being dead?
What do you want from Turkey? Its Middle East Lite.
The fact they can allow any speech, free or otherwise is amazing.
ysbaddaden Says: Does that mean no internet orders for hashish?
Answer. No. Just check out the Okanagan Valley Skunk.
