Righties Continue To Attack Planned Parenthood with False Info
By Nicole Belle Wednesday Aug 29, 2007 4:48pmThis just makes me crazy. Want to know why collectively, Americans are dumbing down? Because we allow false information that supports the Fundies' agenda to go out absolutely unchallenged. This particular battle in Colorado started when several outlets ran an article where a "Right-To-Life" member throws out unbelievably false info (like teenage girls getting "hooked" on birth control). Thankfully, some residents wrote in to smack down the lies. The Fundies' response? Get the disinformation out on radio:
Discussing contraception issues with co-host Craig Silverman on their August 27 broadcast, 630 KHOW-AM co-host Dan Caplis echoed recent remarks by an anti-abortion activist when he asked, "Well, hey, hasn't everybody heard that birth control fails at an alarmingly high rate?" But neither he nor Silverman mentioned that according to federal health statistics, the three most popular forms of birth control -- oral contraceptives, sterilization, and condoms -- have efficacy rates of 99.9 to 79 percent.
It's absolutely infuriating. Have they not thought about the long term ramifications of making these claims? There are plenty of studies that show abstinence-only education does not curb sexual activity. Do they for one minute consider what will happen when there are all these unwanted babies born of their lies?

Oy.
"God only hopes one day there will be less people who believe in God"
If that's not a typo, I'd call 21% an alarmingly high failure rate.
If they're anti-abortion, you'd think they'd be pro-birth control!!

America is going round and round in concentric circles and will eventually sail up it's own ass.
It makes me soooooo tired.
"hooked on birth control"?.....
Sounds like something someone pulled out of "The Onion"....
Geesh....
Wait, I'm on our side here guys, but that must be a typo. 79%? That IS alarmingly high. Also, even if it's 97%, that also could be alarmingly high, if you think about it. A condom that fails once every 33 times you have sex? On a good month, that means I could father a child once every week or two...
heheh
They sure do.
The poor will get poorer.
The rich will get richer.
Why do you think they lie in the first place?
I believe those rates are per year - so if a couple uses this birth control method for a year, at the end of the year %79 of the women will not be pregnant.
the conservative christians want everyone to begat(that's fuck in god talk) with everyone and just keep producing submissive little bastards for them. i would tell them to go fuck themselves, but that probably would cause more little bastards for them. i guess that having your head up your ass still doesn't work. isolation of one's mind only well breeds.......................and there you go again, more little bastards.
Jeez all these wack jobs are afraid of their own bodies and how they work..If you want to less un-wanted pregnancies teach mastrubation not abstinence..
Fundies lie. It's in their nature to do so it seems. Their religion advocates lying for their version of Christ since the end justifies the means.
"Do they for one minute consider what will happen when there are all these unwanted babies born of their lies?"
Sure they do. But that's somebody elses problem.
First rule of the right.
"Never let the facts get in the way".
I thought you guys knew that.
Brian @ 8:
The failure rate for condoms is related to improper usage. People don't put the condom on early enough, essentially. Condoms, used properly, combined with spermicidal foam have a higher rate of success (in the 90s, anyway).
Birth control success rates are 99.9% effective. Basically, that means that you have be pretty damn potent and/or fertile to get pregnant on the pill. It happens, but it happens with a lot less frequency than when people have sex without birth control because they haven't been taught the facts.
The success rate for sterilization (completed properly, of course) should be 100%, one would think. By definition.
Typical conservative idiocy. "Love the fetus, not the child", this is the same group of people that are against welfare. So they don't want birth control taught, they don't want abortion, and they don't want to pay more taxes to support young unwed mothers. Oh and don't even ASK for more money for schooling to educate these unwanted, un supported children. I hope that the loudest opponents of all of the above are the people that get robbed at gunpoint (or worse) by the uneducated children that grew up in poverty with 8 siblings.
Technically, those are not "rates", they are proportions.
What about all the other stuff Planned Parenthood does? When I was without insurance (like way too many) I went to Planned Parenthood for my female exams (pap & breast exams) for FREE. AND they detected cervical pre-cancer, AND they performed cryotherapy to remove it. FOR FREAKIN' FREE. There's a good chance that, if it were not for Planned Parenthood, I would have ended up with cervical cancer, and (because it is almost always symptom-free until the late stages) I would have died.
Yeah, I know that's more than anyone needed to know, but I'm sick of people acting like all Planned Parenthood is really about is abortion.
Blue Rose @ 5:
------------------------------------------
One out of every five women that are pro life get abortions.
Jason @ 17:
You missed one.
How many of them have adopted children?
....
I thought so.
In George Orwell's '1984' the protagonist, Winston Smith's job was to alter newspapers to reflect the current position of the government.
Today Winston Smith is out of work. The GOP can simply make up total lies and NO ONE of record will correct it, only 'liberal' blogs even try...
Sluggirl @ 19:
Many PP facilities do not even perform abortions. But, reich-wingers are so filled with vile hate and utter stupidity that they refuse to accept the facts.
Peoples Front of Judea @ 14:
Hey, the military needs bodies for the next blood for oil-Halliburton death festival?
If only they could have them born STRAIGHT into a uniform and shipped over to Iraq, that's the answer to the Rebublic's dream?
Otherwise, they just are more brown or poor people....moving into the neighboor hood, wrecking the schools....
Can't we kick Colorado out of the U.S. and designate them unfit for ??? Ahhhh something ? Give me some time I'll think of it.
Actually, while a bit colorfully over-the-top, you make a good point.
Without all those desperate young people born into poverty and desperate for options, who would feed the war machine?
I mean, you don't expect THEIR kids to go, do you?
Silverman has tried to go national for years and still sits in the Rockies woundering why he isn't famous.
Someone please tell the righties that birth control pills work better if you swallow them, not pray over them.
Conservative's Pro-Life Mantra: "the sanctity of life"
Abortion : bad
Death Penalty: good
Murder of abortion doctor: good
Iraq War: good
5 millions dead children a year because of contaminated water in Africa: don't care
US infant death rate, the worst of western countries: don't care
Women's death rate while delivering, the worst of western countries: don't care
Millions of uninsured children in the US: don't care
Sanctity of Life my a**
Blue Rose @ 5:
Who said those nutjobs ever used anything so mortal as logic, when you can have faith in an all powerful deity instead? These are the same people who by party affiliation, don't want health care or even decent bridges and school systems for all these babies. I think the moral point they are not taking, but must feel, is that if we promote birth control, why all these people would be having sex!!! I mean wtf sex is most likely the 3rd most important thing in the entirety of the human race, if we could switch it off like these people would like, we'd have gone extinct 49,000 years ago with the first cro-magnon abstinence only policy.
Lyrics to Roy Zimmerman's KILL A DOCTOR FOR CHRIST
Seems appropriate.
Also a plug for Roy -- if you don't have his albums, get them!! He is AWESOME!!
That is all.
This is what you get when spin doctors are allowed to whip the idiots into a frenzy.
Do they for one minute consider what will happen when there are all these unwanted babies born of their lies?
Sadly, no. As Blue Rose says @ 5, if they were truly anti-abortion they'd be all for birth control and honest sex ed. They're not.
Their agenda is social control, most of all of women — but they also don't want anyone having sex without their say-so. It always makes me think of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life and "Every Sperm is Sacred." The Protestant man across the street (Graham Chapman) explains to his wife they can have sex anytime they want, because "I can go down the road any time I want and walk into Harry's and hold my head up high and say in a loud, steady voice, 'Harry, I want you to sell me a condom. In fact, today, I think I'll have a French Tickler, for I am a Protestant.'"
Really, who knew all these evangelicals had turned Catholic? ;-)
From FDA's latest figures
...male sterilization is 99.85 percent effective with typical use and 99.9 percent effective with perfect use.
My wife would never apply the term "perfect use" to my bedroom skills. I think she'd say that my looks are 99.9 percent effective, though.
I'm guessing that "imperfect use" of male sterilization is unprotected sex after surgery but before the doctor has deemed the sperm count low enough for "perfect use".
They're on the street, marching, with signs! What a bunch of dirty hippies!
Same kind of thing going on in Missouri. Pathetic. If we could get the Fairness Doctine back, this might change.
The primary reason condoms have such low effectiveness rates has to do with, um, user error. People who claim they are using condoms for birth control do not use them every time they have sex or according to manufacturer's instructions.
I'm so addicted to birth control I had surgery to make it a permanent drug. pffft.
Hey, don't you Libs know that the USA needs soldiers for future wars? Where are we going to get them?
While conservatives condemn pre-natal abortions, they condone post-natal abortions.
Mike @ 30:
Ummm... I'm curious what two things would be more important than sex? I mean eating and sleeping are necessary, but only because we eventually want to have sex again.
Yeah, the really hillarious thing (sarcasm, not funny at all) is that the only people the fundamentalist anti-birth control, anti-abortion wackos are intentionally hurting are the people close to them. They can't control the education of everyone, but they can damn sure make it so that their daughters don't know their way around a condom.
By the way, the failure rates are in line with what I've heard before too. Its "user failure," which means if you learn how to properly use birth control, those failure rates drop. And, for those of you interested, major sources of failure with condoms are not putting it on in time, or letting it slip off during withdrawl. Major source of failure with oral contraception is interaction with medications especially antibiotics (i.e. if using antibiotics, use backup birth control, like a condom).
Here's the deal:
Unwanted babies interfere with education in young people.
This causes ignorance.
Ignorance perpetuates religion.
V V
Just read the "hooked on birth control" article. "Right to life" people are scary nutjobs.
The fundies need only look to Jenna Bush as a poster child of how effective an abstinence-only birth control program really is, especially when overseen by a self-proclaimed born-again christian.
The shotgun wedding is when? Next month you say?
Vitam Vas @ 41:
I think its simpler than that. Any kind of irrational fear or focus on issues related to fundamental ambiguities (like when life begins) perpetuates support of superstitions. The downstream effects (under-education, self-esteem issues, etc.) are jus fortuitous side effects for them.
Ryoko @ 43:
REALLY! I heard she was engaged, but that is just too funny.
Rose @ 20:
Does anybody know the rate of women who get an abortion and then decide later in life that they are against abortion for anybody else?
Well, to be honest Nicolle,
At least the "fundies" have a message. It may be an evil, backwards, insane message, but it is a message nonetheless.
Our country is lost. We are at war and people don't know what morality means anymore.
The democrats have NO MESSAGE to give to Americans. Or, I should say, no message they want to hear. Democrats have the same old socialist/communist crap that was supposed to have been permanently dead and buried when the old Soviet Union collapsed. The democrat message is the same message Kruschev spewed back in the 50's and 60's.
The Republicans on the other hand, have a strong message of family (even though they are not family oriented), global supremacy (even though all Empires fail), free enterprise (even though they have ruined the economy by spending too much), the list goes on and on.
The democrats are a bunch of sissies who do what the GOP tells them to do.
Democrats: We will stop the war in Iraq
GOP: We will not stop the war
Democrats: We meant to say we will not stop the war. But we don't like wire-tapping
GOP: We like to spy on Americans
Democrats: Um...that's bad, but can we listen just a little bit?
GOP: Let's nume Iran
Democrats: OK, now your talking!!!
GOP: Shut up Dems
Dempcrats: Yes sir.
Wanderer @ 47:
Are you insane? How is anyone's message like Kruschev's?
Environmental protection = socialist/communist crap?
Oh, another lie they tell is that the Pill prevents implantation of a fertilized egg and is therefore an abortion.
The original pill prevents ovulation by mimicking pregnancy. There is no egg to fertilize.
you know your in trouble when they call a blastocyst(booger) a snowflake baby....I think they are trying to increase the population in the US.....master race kinda thing.....atleast they haven't been going around and blowing up Planned Parenthood offices.......for awhile.
Wanderer @ 47:
First of all, your "communist/socialist" democrats are actually a RIGHT WING party. Let me know when they start (as a whole) advocating "living" wages, mandating 6-8 weeks of vacation a year, taxing the rich APPROPRIATELY (France has the right idea @ 60%), etc.
You're a delusional victim of faux news.
V V
Wanderer @ 47:
Yes the repugs have a message...it's all hype and bullshit...and the dumbass's buy it hook line and sinker...The Dems have a message as well.....STOPPING THE WAR in IRAQ...for starters...getting the deficit back down....environmental issues...gotta keep this rock we live on safe for the next generation ...funding social programs....you know help those people who really need it.....Maybe...just Maybe...start investing in our infrastructure and alternative sources of energy for automobiles..and more..........Wanderer.......you just showed your true colors.....concern troll.
oh and did I mention Education,The Arts.....and getting back to this topic...The Right to Privacy.....it must hurt when you bump your head so much.......
These babies will all be needed to fulfill military recruitment numbers to advance the Neo Con agenda. They are thinking further ahead than you give them credit for doing. They will be needed in Iraq when they reach 18 yrs old.
Peoples Front of Judea @ 14:
The Forced-Birth folks have an underlying racist agenda that no one ever acknowleges; but I remember the "Right-to-Life" lecturer at my Catholic nursing school talking about how the majority of women getting abortions were young and white and how that would result in "other kinds" of people reproducing faster and presumably outnumbering the white, Christofacsists.
The only reason birth control fails is because people are too stupid to use it correctly.
Putting the condom on for a 'few minutes' and then taking it off does NOT help.
Missed a few days of that pill? I'll just take them all today.
And let's not forget the fundy fave... the last second hail mary pullout. Named no doubt for the first stupid wench who thought it would keep her parasite free.
Old Billy @ 48:
Of course it does. If you aren't going to allow corporations to assrape the entire planet then by gum yer just a no good commie! [/snark]
It is always good to remember that guys like
Craig Silverman and Dan Caplis only have sex
in Airport Restrooms with other pro-life men.
Capabilty Jones @ 38:
Between illegal immigrants and Blackwater, I don't think we'll ever need a population boom to support future wars. Not unless we end up in WWIII or something. And only if China and Russia aren't on the same side as us.
mudshark @ 52:
Morality.....you got some nerve.......but that's about it.
I actually worked for Planned Parenthood back in the 1970s. I didn't get a paycheck because I was a intern working on my masters degree. I manned the phones and worked as a pregnancy counselor. First we would do a pregnancy test, then counseled patients on their options. In those days we used a urine test, primitive by today's standards, so there were a number of false positive and negatives.
Based on my own personal research, and somewhere I have the data, the most common cause of unwanted pregnancies is ignorance. I can't tell you how many young couples didn't think you could get pregnant while they were just playing around. Playing around usually involved enough proximity for those little swimmers to find their way to the target, even though it might be a longer trip than usual.
The point is that most unwanted pregnancies happened to the clueless. There is an enormous amount of mythology that is passed around among teenagers, like you can't get pregnant the first time. It was the total lack of sex education that caused the problem, not that sex education classes cause promiscuity.
Carmikl @ 61:
You're right on, on this matter.
Many parents have a hard time discussing sex education (in a matter-of-fact and practical manner) with their children. I know some people who will not talk about sex with their children because they feel that it will encourage them to have sex.
Rose @ 20:
Fantastic statistic; source?
61 Carmikl I too worked at Planned Parenthood back in the '70s in southern NM. I'll never forget the migrant worker women who sneaked in the back door, got their annual exam and a year's worth of birth control pills, and left to return the following year. I wondered what their men thought when they failed to get pregnant again.
Of course it's a control of women issue.
Carmikl @ 61:
Thank You for rising to the top with your response...a very rational one indeed.
The real underlying issue is The Right To Privacy......period.
well lets face the facts, people who left Europe to go to America, did it for several reasons...
1. freedom to practice their own form of religion or just make up a new one.
2. freedom to steal land from the native Americans or what ever land had the resources they needed.
3. freedom to sell snake oil or any other forms of untested genetically modified products.
4. freedom to escape prosecution in the land they had just left or any other international laws that would call them genocidal maniacs.
I'm so sorry for honest US citizens that are being oppressed by this regime cos it just keeps getting shittier :(
JamesR @ 25:
Don't give up hope on Colorado. There are many stucco walled red tiled roofed homes there now because a lot of Californians are moving there and you know how those damn California hippies vote.
Prolifers, who are overwhelmingly religious in their affiliations, feel that it's okay to lie when talking about things they're against. They are against a lot of things, including freedom, women's rights, choice, and privacy. Oh, and they can't stand it if people don't swallow their religious hogwash. The more extreme Christianists think it's okay to murder doctors who serve women's health needs. They, of course, wouldn't think of adopting the children of forced birth and rape and incest. That would be ucky. But, that's ooohhhkayyy... they have Jebus on their side.
It must be terribly frustrating to be a rightie and hate so many people you don't even know. But, hey, you can always take out your frustration by lying... lying... lying.
Nothing christian about it, is there?
Yeah...Colorado. Back when I was growing up there, the feeling was that the state was being over-run by Texans who were buying up property for vacation homes and dude ranches. There was even a joke about it amongst us non-Texan Coloradans - "If God had meant Texans to ski, he would have made bullshit white". I moved away before the takeover was complete, but judging from this story, it was. And they brought their right-wing, bible-banging Southern fundaMENTAList religious crapanola with them. Back in the 60s and 70's, Colorado was a hippie haven - I know, I remember the pot-smoking anit-war sit-ins on the courthouse lawn in town - not a Bible-banging rightie in sight. And the state was okay. Now, it's just another redneck hellhole of knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, Jebus-crazed idiots with no better or more productive way to help humanity than wave signs at women's clinics and give money to hucksters like Ted Haggard and his mega-church.
Not even the skiing's worth it any more.
Colorado is full of good people and some rich crazies who moved there from CA, TX, etc... AM760 is the only voice of reason... AM630 is the all Rethug BS all the time station, and intelligent COites laugh at it... those guys are also lawyers, BTW... go figure...
The fundies will lie about anything to control women's lives. The Flintstonians claim they care about life but want to cut every program from food to home heating assistance
The GOP lawmakers are all having gay sex in public places. Why do they care about babies or motherhood?
Edwin @ 73:
Nothing against gays, they're not heartless people, it's just the GOP is buried in hypocrisy (for votes only-- that's what I meant.)
There is nothing false about the fact that Planned Parenthood is in the business of killing children and covering up the rape of minors. Deal with it.
@-kf:
A woman's menstrual cycle eliminates unused eggs on a routine and regular basis. This is by God's design, so there must therefore not be anything inherently wrong with disposing of an egg.
But, if we subscribe to the 'moment of conception' idiocy that establishes an as-yet undifferentiated cells as a human life, the only difference is the fertilization of the ova by a male sperm.
Since the egg's presence is perfectly natural, we can therefore see that it is the male who is at fault for 'unwanted pregnancies,' and, perhaps instead of leaving young women with a Hobson's Choice (abortion or raising a child with no fucking support from the likes of you holy-rolling nutjobs) ... we need to force a program of sterilization of young Christian men. Or make them quit school and be forced to minimum wage jobs to support their 'family.'
I'm tired of hearing young women or evil doctors blamed for the problem, when a pregnancy takes both a male and a female. (Unless God has plans for a bigger family.) I'm sick of the hypocrisy as a man who laughed at the prison redemption of Karla Faye Tucker; a man who has started an unjust war that has killed thousands of good men and women; a man who laughed when asked about their multiple deployments ... and, above all, a man who tried to hijack Pope John Paul II's 'Culture of Life' and put exceptions on it ... continues to be portrayed and viewed by clueless, servile toads like yourself as a good and godly man.
Oh, and if the fetus you save is gay, will you fight for its rights?
Do they for one minute consider what will happen when there are all these unwanted babies born of their lies?
No.
That concludes todays episode of simple answers to simple questions.
Yeah, I am 'hooked' on having control of my life and my fertility too! I'm positively addicted to the idea my body isnt just a baby factory!
Abortion and birth control was stone outlawed in Romania under an an Iron curtain dictator-Cocactineau or something like that. Anyone who wants to see the REALITY of what the fundies vision should be like should go there and see the ACTUAL effects of it are. Details of this can be found among other places in bestselling "Freakonomics" by Dr. Steve Levitt.
There are children in orphanages there who are so damaged that they will never be "well" or even semi functional members of society....it would be better for both them and society for them to have never been born. The syndrome (one of you child development types help me out here) where you have sixteen year old children who still look like toddlers due to emotional neglect is somewhat common..........others exhibit behavior begging to be picked up......only to go into violent hysterics when they are.
Some idiot right winger is probably spouting off right now that things like this could never happen HERE in our glorious country.....got news for you....things like that are nothing more than taxing government resources (which YOU don't like funding)....and things like that already do happen here.....a few years ago they discovered a boy in NJ foster care who weighed like thirty pounds at age 16....yes I'm serious.
Interestingly, the Romanian dictator was usurped and executed by the youth of his country.....a good number of whom wouldn't have been born were it not for his policies.........justice does get served eventually.
V V
Actually isn't birth control also used as a form of medicine to treat amenorrhea? That's difficulty with menses, and I ain't referring to ancient Egyptian pharohs neither.
79 Vitam Vas
That's Nicolae Ceasescu, and his wife was Elena.
Romanians took some satisfaction that after they attempted to escape, and was executed on the spot in Tirgoviste, that that was the site of their hero's Prince Dracula's birth in 1431.
Birth control pills are 99.9% effective. The 79% refers to condoms. I believe that many young woman take pills for reasons other than sexual activity, making periods more regular, for example. But that's the type of sensitive stuff that embarasses conservatives, so they eliminate context from their thinking.
-kf @ 75:
Why not go to a Planned Parenthood facility and see for yourself how wrong you are? Preventing unwanted pregnancies is NOT KILLING and many times helping a young person (male or female) who is a victim of incest or brutality over the trauma is not covering up it is called compassion.
Let me hear from one pro-lifer that has stepped up AFTER a child has been born and helped, like changing the foster care system that is just awful.
-kf @ 75:
Pardon me, but your ignorance is hanging out.
In MY area, the Planned Parenthood offices only provide free basic medical checkups to girls. They don't advocate or discourage abortion either way, but they DO advocate EDUCATION. Something you obviously could benefit from. Um, I can't imagine anyone in the medical field wanting to cover up the rape or abuse of a child. I think the Catholic Priesthood has a corner on that anyways.
i guess the Colorado right to life or whatever they claim to be is also against the death penalty, the war in Iraq, believes in single payer health care for all, prenatal and post neteral care for pregnant mother, increasing the minimum rage, keep welfare up, put a lock box on social security, protect med-cal and medicare? or does life end once it is born, or are they more interested in forcing women to make cannon fodder for the magacorporation?
-kf @ 75:
There is nothing false about the fact that Planned Parenthood is in the business of killing children and covering up the rape of minors. Deal with it.
i totally agree, just look at blackwater, haliburton, and the oil industries. George bush is the largest abortionist out there, causing the death of thousand of innocent Iraqi and American soldiers just for the sole purpose of increasing the profit of magacorporation businesses.
In previous generations, the greatest threats to freedom were Nazism and Communism. Now, its fundimentalism.
Young girls have a right to an abortion if they desire one reguardless of the wishes of the parents, but...
WHEN A 12 YEAR OLD SHOWS UP FOR AN ABORTION PP DAMN WELL BETTER INFORM THE POLICE GOD DAMN IT!!!!
That is my only beef with PP. When and if they get that issue solved, then they will be my darlings again, but until then I will work to bury their asses for every child they perform an abortion on and they don't do what they MUST to protect that child from abuse again. Period.
