From Think Progress:

This morning, the Washington Post has a story on how lawmakers are being “slimed in the Green Zone” when they travel to Iraq for congressional delegation trips. Reps. James Moran (D-VA), Jon Porter (R-NV), and Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) recently returned from such a trip. While there, Tauscher and Moran noticed sheets of paper that “seemed to be everywhere” in the Green Zone, “distributed to Iraqi officials, U.S. officials and uniformed military of no particular rank.”

The sheets of papers were short, thumbnail biographies of the two lawmakers. ThinkProgress has obtained copies of the bios for Moran and Tauscher. Instead of receiving the official bios readily available on the congressional websites, the U.S. troops were given new ones that cherry-pick the representatives’ “most incendiary” statements...

Assholes. Who would have thought?

WTF?

This from the WaPo article:

Tauscher called it "the Green Zone fog."

"Spin City," Moran grumbled. "The Iraqis and the Americans were all singing from the same song sheet, and it was deliberately manipulated."

But even such tight control could not always filter out the bizarre world inside the barricades. At one point, the three were trying to discuss the state of Iraqi security forces with Iraq's national security adviser, Mowaffak al-Rubaie, but the large, flat-panel television set facing the official proved to be a distraction. Rubaie was watching children's cartoons.

When Moran asked him to turn it off, Rubaie protested with a laugh and said, "But this is my favorite television show," Moran recalled.

Porter confirmed the incident, although he tried to paint the scene in the best light, noting that at least they had electricity.

"I don't disagree it was an odd moment, but I did take a deep breath and say, 'Wait a minute, at least they are using the latest technology, and they are monitoring the world,' " Porter said. "But, yes, it was pretty annoying."

Obviously the repuke didn't get the same treatment. I mean, if you are going to act like a duplicitous asshole with the mentality of a spoiled child, then have the brains to at least release a bio on the republican so that your stupid scheme isn't quite so transparent. Make as glowing (i.e. lie your ass off) as you like!

These conservative cowards are gettin' mighty sloppy.

Everything I grew up with..As being the American way,Fairness, tolerance, innocent until proven guilty, fairplay,NO Cheating....have all gone out the window because of this admin.I know none of them, regardless of party are clean as a whistle.....BUT...This admin has taken the credibility of all politicians down with them.....so how am I to have faith in the govt now.It took a long time for the country to get over Nixon and his antics.....I guess some of them were still pissed off at the Dems for giving Nixon the boot...

Always believe that the Bush gang will use anything and everything to further their position. If Jesus visited Iraq, they'd cherry pick His words too.

Kay's picture

They try to control the information that free American citizens can view here, who wouldn't expect this administration to try to control the message that American soldiers view when they are cut off from the rest of the world? Hopefully, the soldiers there can understand that these representatives are actually visiting them, and do care about their well being. How many times has W gone there and actually spent (non-photo op) time with the troops?

I feel quite sure the Green Zone is surreal beyond any of our maginations. Stop for a minute to consider what's going on inside that fortification. The money, the power, the propaganda...

What is incendiary about the fliers? Maybe I'm blinded by the fact that I agree with the "incendiary" comments, but they seem strong and agreeable to many quotes.

Has this happened to any other lawmaker? Are we sure it's just the dems? If you find out who the hell is responsible, make an update if it's meaningful.

BTW, the moran link is wrong: just use the tausher link and replace the name: http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/moranbig.gif

Im just curious, any word on the source of these yet?

I personally think its just sick and disgusting for the Wrong-wing to try and use the troops as their pawn in their petty politics. Especially inside of the war-zone where so many of our noble soldiers have given their lives for values this country forfeited the day we invaded Iraq and gave away our liberties.

The sick depravity that the GOPervs know and resort to clearly has no bounds.

From what I understand, that was a bi-partisan booting. The republicans were on board in the impeachment of Nixon (notice I didn't say repukes? Back then they were garden variety snakes, like a lot of politicians. These days the republican party has sold off so many bits of its soul that...well, they are repukes!). The Democratic Party of today is getting NO support from the other side. The GOP is a lot of intransigent, selfish, cowardly, lying, myopic fools. That's one of the biggest reasons why it is hard to get Bush out of office, not jsut some blanket statement that Dems are cowards or whatnot.

We are in far deeper than we realize. The neo-criminal cancer has spread throughout every part of our government. Even if we get back both Congress and the White House, the neo-criminal cancer will still be there in every part of our government.

When we lose control of our military, if they stop being a secular entity and start believing they can go their own way. how long until we have a military coup? Who would stop them? It doesn't take a majority to dominate a country as was shown by Saddam's Baath Party.

Just another example of the "spin doctors" at work at the Pentagon/Military Defense
Dept. Sure would be interested in knowning if this was a one time event for these
two Dem. representatives, or has this been going on for awhile and equally as important,
have any Repig respresentatives been subject to identical bios????

Like lying to the troops is something new. Personally I'd be hard pressed to believe that the people who want me to die for oil actually give a damn about me.

I agree. It's only incendiary if you assume the troops are all wingnuts. If you're a grunt who's seen what's really happening on the ground over there, they probably look like pretty reasonable statements.

When they get to have leave and return to the states(as if)...they find out the truth. For the most part.Like I've said...my nephew knows whats going on....and that tells me alot more of them do too.If anything this must disgust the troops and insult their intelligence.....cause the know whats going on.

I watched the Watergate hearings - trust me on this - The Repukes then acted just like they are now, there were just fewer of them in congress. At a certain point - when the stonewall had broken and the smoking gun could no longer be covered up, they did turn on him - to save their own sorry asses.

As far as the topic at hand is concerned, I thought we would never have a worse President than Nixon - wasn't even sure (other than outright dictatorship - which I feared then and fear now) that such a thing was possible. W however, never ceases to amaze me. Nixon had a dirty tricks squad - this whole damned administration is a dirty tricks squad.

W just imported the worst of Nixon into his own administration - along with a fresh crop of glassy eyed fascists willing to crap on the constitution quicker than you can say Sieg Heil!

From the high profile Cheney, Rumsfeld, Greenspan and even Nixon's Watergate council Fred Fielding to hundreds of lower level functionaries - all were first foisted on us by Tricky Dick.

The only thing new here is the extent of the perfidy - and the legions of obedient religious fanatics given key positions fresh from Falwell's propaganda academy - and that Nixon expected a minimal level of experience and competence from his fanatic functionaries.

It would be interesting to see what the bios looked like for O'Hanlon and Pollack. I wonder if each group gets a customize tour based on the military's assessment of their position.

The German's set up a model Ghetto at Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia in 1941. When the International Red Cross wanted to inspect the conditions in the Ghettos they were taken there. It always looked like a perfectly peaceful little village. The Red Cross didn't get suspicious until they realized that they never saw the same people from one visit to the next. I don't know why that comes to mind now.

One of the first things taught in recruit training is that you salute the uniform not the man. That's the cornerstone of the chain of command. It doesn't take long for recruits to realize that there are some real first class jerks wearing officers uniforms. So even though your commanding officer or your commander in chief may be a real horses ... , you are expected to show respect.

This notion of respecting the uniform goes all the way up to the President. The appropriate response to the President entering the room is to snap to attention, so you'll always hear a cheering crowd when the President speaks to a military audience. The penalty for not saluting the President would be the same as the penalty for not saluting a superior officer. You might be busted a pay grade, but it would probably just get extra (unpleasant) duty.

This is why I admired those enlisted men who wrote the op-ed. It's not easy to criticize anyone above your pay grade in the military. It is a serious breach of military regulations to criticize superiors or policy. Survival in the military involves doing what you're told and keeping your mouth shut.

American taxpayers probably paid for that large flat screen TV, and the national security adviser only watches cartoons on it. Mickey Mouse operation indeed. Porter's squirming to defend it, is so dumbass that it's unbelievable. At least they have electricity?? They are monitoring the world?? This is a high ranking government official! If he didn't have electricity, then one can imagine the rest of the country!
