FNS: Lott and Schumer discuss "compromise" on SCHIP

fox_news_sunday_lott_shumer.jpg

Chris Wallace had Senators Trent Lott and Chuck Schumer on to discuss the recent SCHIP bill headed for the President's desk for a expected veto.

Is it me, or does Lott contradict himself about 17 times trying to boast about the Republican's role in SCHIP? Why does he keep saying there was no compromise to the bill when there clearly was?

UPDATE: Eight states file suit against Bush Administration over planned changes to SCHIP and the DCCC targets Republicans for voting against SCHIP.

Good for those eight states, I wish mine was one of them.

We have no problem going into debt to fund killing people in Iraq, but damn it, we are just too short on cash to help a bunch of little kids with their health in this country. Oh, but I bet we can find the money to blow the hell out of Iran if those who call the shots feel like it.

This is so fu*king insane!

To Bush, "compromise" means "Do it my way or I'll take my ball and go home! Wahhhh!!!"

Bush happily puts politics before the health and well being of American children. He has no heart.

Bush is evil and cruel.
The Pol Pot of our times!

Oh, this is kinda good. The Christian Conservatives are so unhappy with the repub candidates they are thinking about running a third party candidate. Please let them do that. Oh please do.

Bush is just being stubborn about the is Schip deal. He is so determined to show that he can be fiscally conservative (now that the congress is dem instead of repub) that he is willing to look like a ogre rather than a decent person.

Anyone got pics of Lott's replacement vacation home on the beach?

I hear it is really nice.

Lott's first words were, "I voted for it before I voted against it."

Wasn't that was a bad thing when Gore said it?

What the f does SCHIP stand for, and are you not spelling it out to be exclusionary on purpose, or just trying to sound cool?

The Eight states that filed suit against Bush Administration.
New Jersey. Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York and Washington

Way to go.

From Lotts "Kids and Student Corner" on his web site..

"I hope you stay interested in your government. Be sure to keep up with what all your local, state and federal officials are doing because, before you know it, you’ll be old enough to vote, too."

But I didnt see on the student page or any reference to the 1980 campaign rally when Lott spoke of the legacy of racist Strom Thurmond.

But he also has a Student FAQ page.

Actually, my counselors always told me I was right minded. Although I see points what I go for instinctively are patterns. I was the kind of kid that drove teachers crazy. I would look baffled in their leftbrained lectures, but then get all the answers correct on papers and tests, but have difficulty back-tracking and explaining what I did.

Whenever I hear Schumer say "compromise", it usually means "do whatever the GOP tells us".

For the record, Bush hates children, and he's going to prove it. Trent Lott loves George W. Bush, and he will obey his master. So Trent hates children, too.

The $3 increase of taxes on Cigars needs to go! I will support Bush's veto until these extra taxes are removed (also includes liquor and cigarettes).

Dems should go FULL FORCE on this issue and spend a gazillion dollars on an ad campaign. They can absolutely destroy the Republicans with this issue alone. If the Dems cannot capitalize on this issue then they REALLY suck.

It is hard to point out patterns to people that don't see them already.

My wife loves crime dramas. I avoid watching them with her too often, as I often have the plot figured out in the first minute or so. She doesn't like to hear the ending before the show really begins.

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children!
Lott might be slightly retarded. Seriously. And Bush is just an idiot ideologue. Maybe this will be the issue that swings things left in this country, enough to marginalize the GOP until we can do some damage control

The program expansion will also help the middle class. Bush is against it since it will take business away form the private insurers.

Also, the militray never got the resources they needed to sucessfully win this war. Lack of equipment and manpower.

So you can add -
Bush doesn't like the middle class.
Bush doesn't like the military.

Does bush like anything besides very rich conservatives?

Be sure to pull that shive out of your neck when this is over, cause I don't trust Chuck Schumer to compromise on anything less than giving away the whole damned store.

Funny (not haha) how the democrats have the reputation of being weak. The republican party is the party of IF.

IF we don't attack Iraq...Mushroom cloud, biological weapons etc
IF we leave Iraq they might follow us home.
IF we leave Iraq there will be bloodshed. (opposite of now?)
IF we give the troops proper rest and better equipment and training, the dems will use that to start withdrawal.
IF we give more children healthcare it will cause healthcare for all to be considered.
IF democrats are elected you will die.
IF democrats are elected we will be attacked again.

What IF they are wrong? Do they have ANY facts?

What IF I get cancer tomorrow? What IF I get run over by a train? What IF I stop doing anything because I'm afaid of what IF?

Bush the Liar's picture

Notice the republicans only can complain about the bill, they offer no alternatives except cut off kids healthcare.

Republicans have no plan. Maybe not, I'm sure their solution is to cut taxes again.

By the way, the tax cuts are phony, they are actually tax increases cause they create a deficit which we pay interest on and that costs us more taxes.

Republicans- still spinning and lying.

i am pretty liberal, but if you look at the facts of this, you will begin to wonder if the democrats are not playing politics with this.

it looks like to me that the dems are playing up the health care card and getting a double whammy by using kids. this is the kind of tactics i expect from the other side.
i don't care for it.

Yes, to your Schumer comment! He's my senator and, along with hillary, has dumbed-down traditional New York liberalism till it's indistinguishable from, say, Texas conservativism.

No compromise on integrity and truth!! Let bush veto this bill! Let America see the great family-values man at work!

The S-Chip increase is for $35 billion over 5 years, roughly $7 billion per annum. The wars in Iraq and Afganistan in 2008 are expected to need nearly $190 billion in war funds. That's for one year also. The S-CHIP increase is just 1/27th of the Iraq quagmire funding. Have our leaders lost their minds? These numbers have to be crunched, again and again. American's should demand that we provide 100% medical coverage for all children under 18, our national leaders must be held accountable if they refuse to back that policy goal. We're smarter than this. It's late 2007, and we're fighting for this policy? It's a common sensical national policy.

This bill was first proposed by Bill Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union address. Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch co-sponsored the bill in the Senate. Trent Lott who received $50,250 in tobacco campaign contributions in 1997 opposed the bill from the start.

Avalanche Journal April 07, 1997
But Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., appearing earlier on NBC, said he opposed a new cigarette tax, and that even without it, ''there still would be a problem with another big government program takeover which costs billions of dollars when there are other solutions that will get the job done better.''

Lott indicated he thinks conservatives like Hatch should not support the legislation.

Although both Hatch and Kennedy called it ''the Hatch-Kennedy bill,'' Lott said, ''I prefer to call it the Kennedy bill.''

New York Times April 12, 1997

On Tuesday, Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, the majority leader, derided the bill and said, ''This is not last year, and a Kennedy big-government program is not going to be enacted.''

Want to start your private office arms race right now?

I just got my own USB rocket launcher :-) Awsome thing.

Plug into your computer and you got a remote controlled office missile launcher with 360 degrees horizontal and 45 degree vertival rotation with a range of more than 6 meters - which gives you a coverage of 113 square meters round your workplace.
You can get the gadget here: http://tinyurl.com/2qul3c

Check out the video they have on the page.

What strikes me in this so-called debate about the childrens' health care program is that the Republican argument is protecting the private health insurance industry is more important than protecting the health of American children. They don't want to encourage those with private insurance to switch to the government plan, and therefore S-CHIPS program presents that threat to the private insurance industry.

They've declared their priorities very clearly, and the Democrats and the media treat it as though this were a reasonable political position to take. Almost anywhere else in the Western world, it would be political suicide for a party to take such a position, but in the US its par for the course. In the United States, of course the interests of the health insurance industry takes priority over the health of children, or anyone else without the money to pay.
