Open Thread

Time You Cover Thanks to the reader who reminded me about this one from last December. Sadly, it's still timely, you're right.

In other news, during yesterday's MySpace/MTV Presidential Dialogue, Barack Obama responded to the top video on 10Questions, which was a question from a MoveOn member about net neutrality. It's not too late to post your own question and/or to vote for your favorite question for candidates of both political parties.

And don't forget we've got a Democratic Debate Open Thread going tonight, too, for your commenting pleasure...

The problem (at least in my town) still seems to be that some are more equal than others... I think Orwell helped me see that. Of course, I could be mistaken -- perhaps someone else remembers it too...

Post-debate outdoor interview by Chris Matthews was crashed by student practically falling on Tweety while holding a "free Iraq" sign and yelling "no more blood for oil !"
The look on Tweety's face was priceless . Kudos to the kid for getting past security. Hope he lives .

hey I just wanted to post a RIP for Robert Goulet. A great performer with a great sense of humor. He will be missed

Tweety "rightwing tool" is having a bad month. sweet.

somewhere I read: "John Hurt. Possibly the most appropriately named actor ever."

I like the Edmund O'Brien version also.

Clip from Riders of the Storm. Quirky movie. B-52 crew jamming religious (and other) broadcasts.

This clip is where they over-ride the sound of an aerobics bit on a televangelism show.

If you've got some money lying around
Send Jesus Some
Send Jesus Some
Instead of taking that weekend out of town
Send Jesus Some
Send Jesus Some
It's only money after all
We're be here to take your call...

Then the clip cuts to the "lady" presidential candidate, her Rovesque advisor, then the show's aerobics class, and then it gets weird.

Kinda funny the way that book turned from fiction into a "How-To" manual....

Stop, if you will, and consider the high probability a large number of our politicians within the beltway are being bribed, blackmailed and/or threatened.

The neocons and other scumbags running the show have all the money in the world, so the first thing they can try is bribery.

But they've also now granted themselves surveillance w/ no oversight, even though they, in fact, are the biggest criminals in the world.

So they can now coerce the David Vitters, Larry Craigs, Mark Foleys, etc. of Congress to vote exactly how they wish... at least until the damning evidence is otherwise exposed.

And finally, if they have to, they could just kill off the most stubborn opponents, either through blatant assassination, or by using technology the layman still doesn't realize exists, like EMP or the ability to hijack airplanes via remote control, a technology which has existed since at least 1962, when Operation: Northwoods was proposed.

Timmeh sure went after HC....how much more obvious can he get?...geeezzzz....what a hack.He was focused on HC all night...he didn't go after any other candidate the way he went after her.he's a neocon tool.

Far as I'm concerned, the same goes for HC. Like hammer and chisel. Both are tools.

yeah.....agreed.I don't think anyone could argue against that point. But the more they attack her the more support she'll get...a lot of people are pro HC.as for me....I'll vote for her in the general election if I have to....but not in the primaries.

Another reason for me to hate the 2 party system. Instead of primaries how about playoffs between divisions. Even with a wild card slot thrown in. Anything would be better than the existing system where everything is geared to dividing up the populace 50/50.

The Zogby International survey shows 52 percent of Americans would support a strike on Iran, while 53 percent expect President Bush to launch such an attack before the end of his second term.

This is very disturbing, more like frightening, because the unintended consequences of such an act could be utter chaos and like a snowball rolling down hill attain a critical mass causing worldwide conflagration. I am not an alarmist or anything even close to that, I have just observed all that is happening and this would be the biggest mistake America could make, my guess is that it could make the tragedy of death and destruction in Iraq pale by comparison.

But the point I want to make is that those in that poll would not have made that choice except for the massive propaganda machine of this administration spewing lies and demonizing the Iranians with every breath they take. There was a cartoon awhile back in the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio showing Iranians crawling out of a sewer for gods sake, just like the cartoons in Germany of the Jews in the period between WW1 and WW11.

The fact that the Iranians were completely open and ready to talk quite seriously with this administration in 2003 and were turned down tells you exactly where this administration stands. Even when they say the last thing they want is war believe the opposite because that is the true aim. The inability of people to see this drives me to distraction.

Wake up America, while you still have a country under a constitution that gives you the right to protest, the right of dissent because if you don't it is history.

One of the ways to stop this is to impeach both bush and cheney right now, they should not be allowed to stay in office. They are criminals on a scale matched by no one in the history of this planet. I believe this to the very core of my soul and so should you. It is not time to be a democrat, or a republican but a citizen of America.

Jeez, even fake teeth for Halloween contains lead!

Shrub won't compromise
on giving children health care, because his tobacco lobbyist buddies would be affected.

As usual, the CIA lies.

We've got at least 283 suicides
from this war.

Good pic. That film of 1984 is underrated.

Check this great link which portrays the raping of America by that criminal bastard Bush, it's well done, funny, sexy, and accurate.

TIME MAGAZINE?

Since when did *I* start looking like John Hurt? I've really got to start taking better care of myself!

i don't know about you but Mathews is beginning to creep me out , with his plastic grin and that annoying looking off camera to someone one the side . But that's the charm of his arrogance , I guess. And what the hell was this nonsense about UFOs and asking Richards if he agreed with Kucinich , whether or not there were UFOs , smelled like a set up .

A. Mathews asking Kucinich about UFOs was ridiculous and demeaning . Trying to make him out to be an oddball , but Kucinich fired back , even Jimmy carter said he has seen a UFO, so have a lot of people . But somehow Timmy " the Evil Pumpkin" Russert didn't know the difference between seeing a UFO and believing in Aliens from outer space . Kucinich had to remind him that all it means is an unidentified flying object .
B . I mean if that was the only reference to the topic fine , they insult the man by going to him last all the time , and giving him the least time .
C. But then Chris Mathews tried to what seemed like taking a broad brush stroke over Kucinich , Richards and Biden trying to label them as UFO nuts , But when he got to Biden , and brought up the UFO crap AGAIN , Biden bristled , and said what are we talking about this stuff for and Mathews , the little arrogant coward , abruptly changed to a different topic.
D. To me this looked like a DELIBERATE attempt to ridicule , marginalize Kucinich to get him off the debates , ( MATHEWS ACTUALLY SAID ON HIS SHOW EARLIER , IT WOULD BE BETTER " WITH ONLY 2 PEOPLE , CLINTON - OBAMA .) And why stop there drag Richards into it and even Biden . These two goons who are TOO COWARDLY to ask about the Government spying on U.S. Citizens , email being read , phone taps , secret prisons , and sounded like the wanted all the candidates , to pledge to attack Iran with their line of questioning , " will you take military aCTION Iran if needed . " ?, Who the hell does mathews and russert think they are ?

Anybody else hear about ClearChannel censoring Bruce Springsteen's new CD????

I was just listening to XPN and the DJ mentioned a Fox News story about it claiming it was because Bruce was "old".

If this is true, we have to kill ClearChannel and take our airways back.

See video: Zionist Pressure Fails to Stop Overcoming Zionism Book Joel Kovel, author of Overcoming Zionism, talks with Amy Goodman about Zionist pressure which caused University of Michigan Press to drop his book from distribution. Only after fellow academics and civil libertarians led a campaign to get the book published did University of Michigan Press overturn their decision and agree to continue the distribution of Kovel's book.

They know, instead, that it's a hoax -- a political tool -- employed merely in the realization of that singular dream that lies closest to their little authoritarian hearts: the Strong Man as Leader."

U.S. Economy Grew More Than Forecast in Third Quarter

Economic growth in the U.S. unexpectedly accelerated in the third quarter as increases in exports, consumer spending and business investment made up for another plunge in home construction.
Gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 3.9 percent in the quarter, the most since the first three months of 2006, compared with a 3.8 percent pace in the prior quarter, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. The Federal Reserve's preferred price gauge rose more than forecast.

Dot.com bubble bust, 9/11, Iraq war, housing and subprime debacles, (and 9/11 one more time for effect) and we are still expanding.

Even with the tax cuts that only benefit Cheney and his Halliburton BFFs.

That doesn't look anything like me.

No Free Lunch

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some Exchange students in the class.

One day while the class was in the lab the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what the matter was. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country’s government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, ‘Do you know how to catch wild pigs?’

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke.

‘You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn.

When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.

The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat; you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom.

They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.’

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms- just a little at a time.

One should always remember “There is no such thing as a free Lunch!”

I pulled this off a non-political blog that I visit. It was contributed by someone who has shown time and again they are a dedicated Bushite. I thought I'd share it with you for your entertainment.

I actually heard this quake a few seconds before I felt it start to shake. I've been in SF for 14 years now, and this is the first one that I've ever knowingly heard. I did some research and found out that it's quite common.
