In the humble opinion of a this midwestern blogger (I was born in Ohio of Illinois stock) you can't really understand the Midwest or sex without watching every single episode of the "Midwest Teen Sex Show." Don't worry, like much of the Midwest, there's no actual sex in it.

But it is very informative about sex. And the Midwest. Hey, we all have areas where we need to learn.

Open Thread below. Happy hump day Wednesday.

In Washington Tuesday, members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee savaged Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and General Counsel Michael Callahan for the company's involvement in the 2005 jailing of a Chinese dissident. But if their bipartisan criticism of Yahoo's behavior - cooperating with a Chinese government "subpoena-like document" to supply information about journalist accused of the "illegal provision of state secrets" - sounds disingenuous, it should. After all, those are trademark tactics of the Bush administration and its Republican amen corner in the aftermath of 9/11.

I'm sick about Diane Feinstein and Charles Schumer failing to take a stance against Torture. We obviously have a lot of house cleaning to do in our Democratic Party. And I can't wait to start. These two are high on the list of those that must go.

Torture is a pretty standard and easy issue.

Conspiracy minded people often claim that these two party's are made up of the same type of people. One just posing as the opposition to the other. Votes like this make that claim seem very true. I say screw the left/right paradigm in our politics and starting thinking in top/down fashion. You are either with the global elite who want to control and milk the rest of the world of their money, or you are with the people of the United States that the Constitution talks about.

Pisses me off.

x-posted from a recent email:

I've been saying, (for any, and all, sundry, of those of you out there in the Peanut Gallery that have been paying the least bit of attention), for the last half year, that when it come to s/electing our next Fearless Leader to be The Next President of The United States of America, these Evangelical, Social, Conservative, haters are full of it.

They can cry, bitch carp, whine, complain and talk all the smack they want, but the fact of the matter is is that come s/Election Day 2008, they're going to assume the position, hold their noses, bend, at the knees and hips, roll the fuck over, and vote for whatever candidate most appeals to their Authoritarian instincts.

(See: Dean, John , Conservatives Without Conscience)

And I motherfluclking guar-annnn-teeee you it ain't a gonna be the Hillary/Osama Hussein/Breck Girl, or any combination thereof.

Period.

End of.

Robertson's endorsement today of Rudy Ghouliani For El Herr Presidente Commandant, Fo' Life, just proved me right.

There should be a level of personal satisfaction in that, but there isn't.

It's more like it makes me want to puke, and hurl mass chunks.

Preferably in Entropy's direction.

National Elections in the USA have been completely gamed and co-opted because of the 50% + 1% = Victory rule, that is the basis of our so-called "Democracy."

FYI, my Liddel-Scott still translates the word: "δημοκρατία" as "Mob Rule" and that's exactly how this s\election game in the Good Ole U. S. of A., has been, and is now being played.

By gaming the mass mob of the American people.

(Which tells me that in the last 2,500 hundred years, or so, despite all the positive PR, and spin to the contrary, we haven't really budged an inch from our much bally-hooed, barbaric, slave-owning, Athenian roots.

Let's not forget that our Neo-Cons, that hijacked our US Government, base their entire messed up philosophy of the Imperial America of the 21st Century on the works and Noble Lies of Plato, before you start gathering the pitchforks and lighting the torches for me saying that our way of Democracy isn't all that and a bag of chips, m'kay?)

What the last 2 Presidential elections hinged on, and what this one coming up in 2008 will pivot on, as well, if not more so, is the fact that it is a given that 30% of all voters will always vote right wing, so to win, all you need to do *is convince only 21% of the voters* to pull the Republican lever.

That's it.

Most of that convincing will be done next October when well over *$1 billion dollars worth* of substance free, 30 second negative attack ads go into heavy, non-stop, 24/7, MTV stylee, rotation on teh Cable TV and simply flood the airwaves and drown out any chance of having a reasonable political discourse.

Since most Americans, (85% of us), have an IQ of 115 points, or below, and are for the most part under-educated, thanks to a deliberately bankrupted educational system, and therefore have the attention span of a gnat, these ads will be effective with at least, at a minimum, of 12% to 15% of the electorate that will even bother to show up to vote.

To get to to 51% from there won't take very much, especially if there is some sort of galvanizing "event", that will drive voters to the polls, as unlikely as that scenario probably is.

I mean why have mass murder of Americans committed to fulfill political ends when it's so much easier, and just as effective, to simply just to rig a few electronic voting machines and disenfranchise some voters in states like Ohio and Florida?

:-P

Why get one's hands unnecessarily dirty, when you don't have to?

So, the 2008 race is going to be very, very, close, just as 2004's was when Busch won by 50.7% of the vote, by Karl Rove's brilliant use of most of the strategy I've outlined above.

And that's the way it is.

Doesn't matter to me who wins, I consider things way too far gone, across the board, and I'm out of here, at or around Inaugu-Coronation Day.

Rots of ruck, for those of you that choose to stick around after this coming slow moving train wreck of debacle runs its course.

Pretty cool to see these kids making a their point in such a no-nonsense sort of manner with a sense of humor. Lets face it, kids are never going to STOP having sex because the "authorities" warn them that they might go to hell - especially when those "authorities" keep getting snagged in illicite sex scandals.

Hopefully people hear the "love" undertone here. If not - be safe about it and don't let anyone tell you what you should be comfortable with but your inner voice. Good vid.

Ah - good advice from kids to kids.

I think abstinence means "wait till you're ready", not "wait till somebody else thinks you're ready". Unfortunately, this subject has become so tabu that kids are left with very little emotional tools/options in religeous society to recognize when they are ready.

Again, good video. Applause.

Yes. Those compassionate Reagan years...

Reagan and his buddies decided that mental health patients were not cost effective. It turns out that a mental hospital bed was 10x more expensive than a bed in a prison cell. So mental institutions closed en masse during the 80s, dumping hundreds of thousands of patients (a lot of whom were veterans, BTW) onto the streets. In the end an indigent is almost free, and those who commit crimes are still cheaper than providing for the care they needed as they should have never been dumped into the general population to begin with. Ain't capitalism grand?

Compassionate conservatives... may ray-gun burn in the circle of hell he deserves. Ironically the asshole sure got treatment and care for his Alzheimer's, didn't he?

A society is only as good as it treats its weakest members. A country that sends their young in harm's way and disposes of them as soon as they become a liability once they return damaged, is not worth fighting for IMHO. And I guess that the lot of chickenhawks share this view with me, as neither Cheney, Kristol, Limbaugh, Coulter, Rice, Rove, et al, served a single god damned day in uniform.

It seems that America considers someone being an liability on the bottom line of someone's profit to be a crime, and in some sense it is the only crime that matters. If you are no longer able to make us money, and are starting to cost us money... you are no longer a member of this society, to the streets with you!

And their leader is a guy who claims Jesus is his favourite philosopher.... screw the lot of them. Charlatans, selfish, pricks...

> And their leader is a guy who claims Jesus is his favourite philosopher ...

Rep. Baldwin, withdrawing her "T" (transsexual and gender identity) inclusion amendment to today's successful Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) passage:

Rep. Baldwin: “But while I believe that a roll call vote on this amendment would demonstrate strong support for an inclusive ENDA, I believe that it will fall short of adoption.

"People have asked why I pressed for and insisted upon bringing an amendment to the floor and maintaining the option to withdraw it without a vote. The reason is simple. I believe that those who will be left behind by this bill deserve to hear on this House floor that you are not forgotten, and our job will not be finished until you, too, share fully in the American dream.

"So at the moment at which the closing arguments are made, I will withdraw this amendment. With a commitment to my colleagues and all Americans committed to equality of opportunity, and ending discrimination, that I will do everything within my power to make this measure whole again.”

You can hardly get more beautiful than that.

Anyone notice (not that it's something new for the Boy President) that when asked about his stance on Pakistan, Bush first stated he'd 'just spoken to Musharraf' before coming to the dinner w/ Sarkozy ... but then ummmed and aaaahhhed his way through what was ... um ... ah ... actually said.

So ...

1. He was lying. Never spoke to Musharraf, mumbled through a response.
2. Did speak to Musharraf, but was busy with his coloring book on George Washington and wasn't really paying attention.
3. Did speak to Musharraf, but Uncle Dick didn't have time to explain what 'go fuck yourself' meant.

The Facts are finally starting to emerge regarding Homeless Vets. I wrote many months ago that after the Vietnam War thousands of Vets who had lived through hell in Jungle Firefights were coming home with little or no help trying to figure out how to blend back into society.

Drug use became rampant in those poor men, anything to help dull the mind of the horrors they had experienced. The Government did little or nothing to help as usual.

Now we are finding that 25% of the returning soldiers returning from Iraq are homeless and again turning to booze and drugs to ease their suffering, and facing a Government Agency who is underfunded and badly mismanaged. Soon out cities will be flooded once again with these poor men who have looked into the jaws of death and destruction and had their minds warped almost beyond help (even if there were help available.)

All of you brothers out there who were in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan or any other hell-hole know what I'm saying here.

I'd like to encourage all of you to write to your Representative in both house's of Congress no matter what party they are affiliated with and let them know how urgent this is.

Our Government sent them into a Bogus War and they shouldn't have to return to a Bogus, Underfunded Veterans group for help.

Please help our Vets.

Does it really add to the discourse to attach the word troll to anyone with whom you disagree? Is that not identical to the tactics of Limpbaugh, Insannity, and O'Leilley who attach the demon word "Librul" to anyone with whom they disagree? I realize that posters like this ARE a dime a dozen, but this must be a parody, for it is too stereotypically perfect. I am surprised the poster did not bust out a "Satin is a Liberal".

To qualify it as disagreement would imply there is actual merit to the content. TROLL properly conveys the contempt for a horribly punctuated and misspelled discourse, and a true Christian would certainly take offense at the selective morality of George W. Bush.

You did not address the fact that the name calling is just as silly and unproductive as the original post, which was most likely a parody. No one, especially Liberals, should squash dissent so flippantly, no matter how ridiculous it is.

Sorry to break the flow but here's another little doozy showing just how well the surge is working in Eye-raq:

State [Department] seeks $1.5B for security in Iraq

Apparently there's more payoff for our friends at Blackwater included. I wonder if it's to "compensate" them for their hopefully soon exit or if it's to bribe the families of those they've murdered?

Thanks for the concern trolling. And if I'd taken the writer to task for his spelling and lack of grammar, would you also be standing in defense of his right to be an illiterate thug?

You just can not help yourself. Anyone who disagrees with you has to be called a name. Are you a Republican, seriously? Notice how I questioned the message, but you question the messenger. Here, allow me to lower myself to your level...idiot.

this is really off topic and if you choose to just trash it, no offense: a request: can the ad on the front page of CandL featuring Michael Moore putting on a rubber surgical glove as a promo for sicko, can the ad be changed to some other illustration. it's not michael or sicko that i'm concerned about. i support both. it's the ad itself. everytime i log on, it just looks like someone putting on a prophylactic. it's just kind of nasty. i would like to see it changed to something else, but if no one else has complained or felt negative about it, please just let it go. it's really petty anyway.
