The philanthropic arm of Google just announced they will fund hundreds of millions of dollars of R&D into renewable energy with a goal of making it cheaper than coal. Bravo! (standing up and applauding)
Let's see. I'll package thousands of mortgages together, slice them into risk levels creating debt instruments called CDOs, then sell them to "investors" who buy them with borrowed money while leveraged to the eyeballs. Who could ever have conceived this would lead to problems?
Former gang member Luis Rodriguez works quietly and effectively with gang youth both in the US and Latin America, and blogs eloquently about it.

Don't get me started on the details of this Google green energy scam. You won't like what you hear.
Our renewable energy infrastructure is built by burning oil and coal.
Most renewable energy sources are driven by fossil fuel inputs.
This is why renewables cost more than coal. They are essentially made from coal...
If try to power our civilization on renewable energy that can be built upon renewable energy, then we're back almost to an 18th century energy budget that will have to provide for over six billion people.
We are going to be forced by the limitations of resource depletion to live with a lot less than we are accustomed. If we don't invest in this mode (and we won't), then we will be forced to live with much less than it takes to stay alive.
We're eating the planet in a capitalist orgy. And we've almost finished the meal. Tomorrow we will go hungry.
The BTUs available to us from renewables, are a fraction of the energy we get from fossil fuels. We can't infinitely expand our population and civilization on a single planet with a declining resource base. If we were wise, we'd quit trying.
But we aren't wise, so we'll waste time and resources avoiding the inevitable, and let it continue to grow into a devastating crisis.
Oil is in decline, and energy will decline with it. We use oil to get coal, so coal will decline. We use both to harvest renewable energy, so those will decline.
Up next, War with Iran and a manufactured oil crisis that will sink the US into a major depression.
How does your garden grow?
Why Can't The Dems Get This Right?

Okay it's not thats it's a scam I mean we all need to move into the future but the Google Evangelists need to come straight with whats going on so people don't lose their shirts investing in something that isn't going to benefit the average person anytime in the near future.
Weaseldog @ 2:
We've been living small is beautiful and are willing to continue to sacrifice (if you want to call balance sacrifice) for the future but it's tough getting people on board in the land of excess.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like a sacrifice to me either.
At first it did. But it was the sacrifice a self defeating attitude. I gave up the dream sold on television, and replaced with one of my own making.
General Motors has come up with a new plan to save their asses, and 'do good' at the same time.
They're going to offer all the US homeless their choice of a new Cadillac or a new Hummer, in exchange for signing an interest-free, ten-year note, with the first payment (amount to be determined by 'an analysis of the economic situation at the time') due in three years (or less, depending upon the current note-holder).
Then they're going to amass all the notes into 'an investment package' and sell the package to the Chinese, in exchange for US Government notes now being held by the Chinese, in an amount of twice the value of the amassed car notes. This is a good deal for the Chinese, because it's beginning to look as though the US notes are going to become worthless soon.
Then GM is going to take the old Chinese notes and offer then to the US Treasury in exchange for cash at a twenty percent discount, after bribing the appropriate politicos with cash in the amount of ten percent of the notes. Then when GM gets the cash for the old Chinese notes, they're going to rush to Tijuana and exchange the dollars for pesos, hopefully before the dollar-economy collapses.
It's a win-win-win deal, the only loser being, as usual, the US government. (Unless the GM vehicles rushing the cash to the Mexican border break down, and the dollar collapses before they can get them fixed).
But what are the chances of that? (About 50/50, according to Lloyd's of London, which refused to insure GM for that calamity).
I wonder what would happen if GM took the brains out of it's PR and Financial Manipulation departments and put them in the car-making organization?

I hear you. We never wanted to be lemmings being led to the abyss anyway. Guess we ended up on the wrong planet somehow.
We all better hope that our neighborhood gang reformers do a good job, and hurry up about it, because pretty soon, the way things are looking, we're going to have to depend on our neighborhood gangs to defend us against Blackwater and the other mercenary terror squads the Bushies are gonna sic on us to do their military coup while our loyal troops are stuck in quagmires overseas.
So support your local gangs, and make sure they're up-armed and up-armored, because those Blackwater guys carry a lot of heat.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up on Kevlar duct tape, either.

So are the bushies, and everyone under their thumbs,
Is anybody doing anything about this?

Alert!! Just heard on TV that Henry Hyde, the lard ass repug who was foaming at the mouth to impeach Bill Clinton has died. One less asshole for the repugs.
Mike Meyer @ 27:
Forgot my Schoolhouse Rock lesson, so please answer this for me:
1) If we impeach Bush, we end up with Cheney, if we impeach Cheney and Bush, we end up with Condoleeza Rice, if we impeach Bush, Cheny and Rice, would the speaker of the house be up for president?
2) If that's the case (Impeach President, VP and Secretary of State) then I say it'll take too long to impeach all three, let's get a PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRAT in the White House & start Hague war trials. That'll be better punishment versus just getting fired from your job. Nixon never did any time in jail - Bush/Cheney/Rice and all of BushCo deserve JAIL time and I hope Pelosi's thinking "Impeachment = Off the table" is heading towards holding BushCo war trials.
Or am I too optimistic?
SM @ 31:
Rice before Pelosi? I don't think it works in that order.
