Tom Tancredo Plays Up His Hateful Bigot Side In Ad

It's an unusual tactic for a presidential campaign. I don't know if Tancredo is thinking out of the box or just not thinking.

MigraMatters:

With each new ad from Team Tancrazy, the level of hysteria gets ratcheted up one more notch.

Last month it was terrorists flooding over the southern border to blow up a shopping mall near you.

Now comes his newest ad, claiming that immigrants are "pushing drugs, raping kids, and destroying lives"...

Simon Rosenberg asks, "If immigration is so important to Americans, why is Tancredo at 1 percent?" and Elana Levin spells out on the DMIblog what comprehensive Progressive immigration reform should look like, and it's nothing like that hate-filled demagoguery that makes up Tancredo's platform.

I didn't get to see Lou Dobbs tonight, so I was wondering if he had mentioned Keith Olbermann's choosing him as "worst person in the world" yesterday and the charges he laid against him? I was hoping you might have the video...

Say, what the hell kind of name is Tancredo, anyway??? Hmmm?

There was some hate-filled bigot who had a website that you or Kos linked to a while back. As she was Jewish, I wrote her an e-mail agreeing with her racist point of view, and said "yeah, we should get rid of the x's and the y's, and then we should get rid of the z's and the Jews." I wonder if my e-mail made her think just a little. My only response was that she hooked me up with a little bit of spam.

Maybe some of them will get scared when they really learn what the people who agree with them are like (obviously I don't agree with her, but I hope she thought I did!).

just look at all destruction these gangs have made and then you look that they were created in the U.S. as a symptom of a failed foreign policy that destroyed central america in the 1980's. and they are just deporting them back there to create more havok there....

I think he's playing the one-issue voter card. Somewhere along the line he got a signal that illegal immigration was the biggest issue facing the nation, and so he decided he'd make or break his campaign on that. He probably thinks his strategy is best because he can tackle two issues - immigration and terrorism - at once, and come out ahead. He's of course failing miserably, and Latinos are running away from the Rs. Tancredo's apparently too dumb to realize that smearing large sections of your constituency (this from a former governor of a western state where Latinos are more highly concentrated no less) is a bad campaign strategy. Ultimately, it's about race and anyone that's a shade darker than pasty.

I have a couple of friends who think Tancredo walks on water, and there is no greater issue facing America than that of illegal immigration. Never mind the Iraq war, the wiretaps, the suspension of habeus corpus, Katrina, outing CIA agents......nothing is more important to them than the "brown menace". When I try to call them on their ridiculous stance, pointing out that don't seem to feel the same way over Asians, Irish, Swedes, Germans, whatever, all they can do is come back with their ad hominem lines about destroying the "culture of America" and not speaking the same language. In my mind they are racists, pure & simple, but only towards people of latino ethnicity. And mind you, it doesn't seem to matter to them whether the illegal immigrant is from Chile, Argentina, El Salvador, Brail, Guatemala, Honduras - they're all effing Mexicans who lie cheat & steal.

Let's see what we've had in the past 24 hours now

1.) Huckabee releases a rapist to rape and murder again
2.) Romney is still hiring illegals
3.) Bush and Cheney have been lying about Iran (big surprise)
4.) Abstinence only programs are increasing STDs and teen pregnancy

And this list doesn't even include corrupt Rudy. What's next McCain eats orphan puppies (stole that one)

What he doesn't mention is all of these crimes committed by illegals are the same crimes committed by us Americans. So what's the solution? Do we send all people who commit crimes back to their country of origin. So if a person of Italian ancestry commits a crime should he be deported back to Italy? How about someone from from French ancestry? Or an Asian person? Oh oh, what if a native American commits a crime? Do we send him back to...to...Aaaahhh shit.

I say we send all politicians back to ethics and reality. First lesson, don't pander to your base.

Elana "Elana Levin spells out on the DMIblog" makes the mistake (whether on purpose or by accident) that most critics make who are trying to confuse the american public into believing that people who want our immigration laws enforced and who do not believe in rewarding those who knowingly and repeatedly break our laws with the gift of citizenship are racist or hysterical. The mistake is equating illegal immigration with legal immigration... Folks, they ain't the same thing... And Tancredo's main issue is with the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION... Illegal immigrants are undermining the wages of american citizens, stealing the identities of our fellow citizens, thumbing their noses at our laws and lowering the benefits that lower rung workers receive... I support enforcing our borders with strong fences and increased personnel; I'm against allowing lawbreakers to live and work among use because they haven't demonstrated the proper respect for our laws; I'm for severely penalizing employers who hire illegals... No, what C&L is saying is quit using fear to pander to their base because their base will buy anything (example...you). Look up the stats and you'll see that he's stereotyping all illegals. madMAN: C&L is consistently on the side of the poor, downtrodden illegal immigrant... They either ignore the stories (like the public's total outrage at the shananagan pull by the Senate when they created their ill-fated Comprehensive Immigration Reform package) or they post off-the-mark stories like this post hoping to, I guess, to increase the number of illegal immigrants that work in this country.

Next to Iraq and Iran (and our middle-east policy in general) this is a huge issue that needs to be addressed... And the candidates that are looking to invite 12-20 illegals to stay and work here indefinitely are not going to be on my short list if at all possible.

So Crooks & Liars is saying that gangs are a good thing? and that we should let gangs from central and south america into the US? What am I missing?

Sure it is...if you're completely misreading that ad or are just not interested in analyzing its imagery and message that is. Tancredo is essentially saying that because of illegals, we have gangs. Nevermind that this is about as untrue as a statement gets. He also shows nothing but Hispanic gang members. And on top of THAT, he shows Hispanic gang members that are all tatted-up and sporting their best gangsta impression in order to scare people further. So, you could say he's put together a juicy hate burger with the images of the gang members he shows. Notice too how he's apparently blaming what happens in other countries on what happens here. So basically, he's saying that criminal trash exists in other countries, and illegal immigrants come from other countries, so all the illegal immigrants that come here must then be the criminal trash from other countries. See how that logic works?

Notice how Tancredo and his repug ilk always say it doesn't matter who's illegal, all illegals need to get out...but you never see an illegal immigration ad that has, say, illegal asian, Russian, Polish, Canadian, etc. immigrants. Why? Because those ethnic groups look like the very people whose votes he's trying to score. Can't rail against your own kind and expect any support. If Tancredo were at least hating equally, he'd run an ad with the face of the Virginia Tech shooter (he wouldn't be republican if he didn't blame a non-illegal and use his face to sell hate) and cry about how asians are destroying America. His ad is also tinged with the abject fear the unwashed white masses have of losing, as O'Reilly says, the "white male power structure" in this country.

And we haven't even gotten to the children of illegals yet...

MS 13 may very well have originated here, but they came to full powerful fruition in Central America and they are indeed fraught with illegals. Personally, I wouldn't mind LAPD pulling a citywide sweep and either deporting or KILLING every single one of these douches.

YOU obviously do not live in a nice neighborhood that has to frantically repaint walls tagged by these cretins on a weekly basis, or stay inside in the evening instead of walking your dogs like you used to, or have the LAPD's gang hotline number on speed dial on your phone. YOU obviously do not live in a neighborhood with homes priced well above 700,000 bucks, yet, when you hear a commotion in the alleyway behind your garage, and go to investigate, witness a gang beating and are told by some Asian punk scumbag to "shut up and go back inside if you know what is good for you." I am so sick of the Latino and Asian (and white and black) gangs, I only WISH we could get away with vigilante squads again. A few of them hanging from trees like Christmas ornaments each morning might just slow some of their activity down, and as far as I am concerned, I don't care WHAT color these ornaments are.

What you're missing, my simpleminded friend, is that most sane people are securely comfortable in their knowledge that gang members, rapists and murderers make up a VERY small percentage of those people crossing our borders illegally.

It would be hilarious that you can't see that as clearly as we can...if it weren't so frightening that there are possibly enough of you people to continue being complicit in the downfall of our country by your idiotic thought process and voting patterns.

The line starts in the INS offices in downtown L.A. (or most other large cities) and figuratively stretches through (for me) a three year application and approval and education period and several thousand hard earned dollars. The very real lines and waiting rooms exist, and I (a white English speaking male) stood as an equal with male and female Latinos, Asians, Europeans, and Africans, some wealthy, some poverty stricken, but all "yearning o breath free." On the day we all were sworn in as citizens, it was amazing to see all the happy faces waving their little flags, some dressed in ethnic clothes, and many crying with very real tears of joy in their eyes...we were all Americans now. Illegals will not ever have this experience, and frankly, in my opinion, because of the way they chose to come here, do not deserve it.

We don't need terrorists flooding from over the border to cause terror at a shopping mall. We have plenty of home grown terrorist right here so Tancredo should look in his own back yard before accusing others. As the song goes "Before you 'cuse me, take a look at yourself'.

First of all, after asking the obvious, 'Who in hell is Tom Tancredo', one might make the observation that it seems logical, if one is in a 'campaign' of some sort (is he?), to play to one's strength.

So if he's a bigot, he should play that up.

The same would apply to being unknown, but I'm not sure how one does that, though obviously he's mastered that, also.

(Is it 'Tommy', or 'Timmy'?)

Did he come from somewhere? It's obvious he's not going anywhere.

The tactic of "deport those that don't belong" seems to be one cause of the gang problem instead of a solution.

How the Street Gangs Took Central America
Summary: For a decade, the United States has exported its gang problem, sending Central American-born criminals back to their homelands -- without warning local governments. The result has been an explosive rise of vicious, transnational gangs that now threaten the stability of the region's fragile democracies. As Washington fiddles, the gangs are growing, spreading north into Mexico and back to the United States.

If deportation in the past strengthen gangs, why should it not continue to do the same?

If Tancredo is so fixated with illegal immigrants and criminals, he should take a look backwards, way back to starting in 1492 and then moving forward. The indigenous people from the First Nation would call all us illegal immigrants. England sent their criminals to populate the colonies and these criminals then proceeded to kill the indigenous people and infect them with disease. As I stated, take a look at yourself, flat-earth Tancredo.

Fact of the matter is very few people are allowed to come here, much less become legal residents and citizens. Though I know illegals create some problems for us I cannot blame them for trying to have a better life.

100 or 200 years ago, if I'm not mistaken, all you had to do was get here and you were in - they didn't have to worry so much about people like you and the government not letting them stay.

Aren't Italians like him associated with the mafia who terrorize, rape, do drugs, and murder?

So much for the beacon of light and freedom that is America - maybe they didn't have time to waste waiting on an asshole like you to tell them they couldn't come here for a better life.

Name calling. Nice. You really come off as an intelligent person with a valid viewpoint when you do this. Not.

Speaking as a legal immigrant that stood in the lines, paid the fees, learned the customs and laws and the whole schmear, I have to say, I don't appreciate ANYBODY that cheats the system and makes fools of us who did it legally.

Gee, maybe the indigenous people of the First Nation should have had all the criminals and immigrants getting off those ships stand in lines, pay fees, learn the native customs and laws before letting them get past the shore line. They didn't and damn... look what happened to them.

please stop using the argument that everyone save the native american is here illegally

it doesnt hold water

illegal immigration is a real problem

the current crop of illegals have very little want for themselves or their children to become americans

tancredo is an ass, but dont make light of a real problem

not when the bush administration is finally admitting that there well may be upwards of 25mil here illegally

thats 10 percent of our population

Home is Crinkle, Birr, County Offaly, Republic of Ireland. It isn't 200 years ago. It is 2007, situations have changed. My people came here on coffin ships and were drafted into Lincoln's army at the docks. That was then, this is now. I didn't come here expecting to be drafted to kill people from Georgia and Virginia. Arguing in favor of immigration policies from before this country was formed is hardly an argument. Different times, different immigrants, different problems. Legal is the ONLY way in my book. As you say, though, it is irrelevant. Both sides of the argument will complain loudly throughout the election season, then the issue will be dropped until next time. Time for a Guinness and an end to this discussion.

And the Republicans created this mess. There is a law on the books that states that employees must show proof of citizenship or a green card in order to work in this country. And my, oh, my. Just how do these "illegals" get jobs without papers. Tancredo wants to punish the "illegals" but he doesn't want to enforce the currents laws because that means that all the landscapers, and hotels and food growers will have to pay real wages to citizens or green card holders instead of paying less than minimum wages to illegals. And I don't see white Americans lining up to clean toilets and wipe asses either.

So Crooks & Liars is saying that gangs are a good thing? and that we should let gangs from central and south america into the US? What am I missing?

He's posing a fallacy by saying "Some of those Latinos crossing the border are vicious killers, therefore we should treat them all like vicious killers." Current laws are sufficient for curtailing violent gang members, if suitably enforced. His problem with immigration is not a fear of Latin gangs; it's more likely a fear of American culture changing, which of course it must as it has with each new influx of immigrants. If he was honest about this, I might feel more sympathy for him (though not enough to vote for him).

It simply amazes me that people fall for these commercials...until I think of some of the Repubs I know.

I mean, there are good reasons to secure the border, but this borders on hysterical. But then again, I have to keep thinking of those Repubs I know to realize how these ads work...

EinGrundZurPanik's picture

You're missing the point, Save Our Troops. The point is that every other group of Americans has committed these crimes, yet there are no calls to deport them. Undocumented immigrants actually commit crimes at a lower rate than other people in America. There's too much of this racist, fear-mongering going around and distracting us from our more pressing issues.

I wish someone would explain how breaking a law, any law, is NOT illegal? You run a stop sign, you did something illegal and have to pay a fine, a hefty fine.
We need to secure our borders, Canadian and Southern, enforce the guest worker program that has worked since 1958, everyone comes through the same door, we get names into a databank with identification. Immigrants used to need a sponsor, a heathcheck when they came through Ellis Island. What is wrong with requiring that today?

texas lady's picture

To enter any other country, Mexico and Canada you will need a visa,or passport be asked what you are doing and how long you are staying. So, Tancredo to me is off the wall with his wild delusions, but it is NOT just Mexicans that can walk across a border. So, we do need to know who is coming in.

texas lady's picture

#71 - In our area it is the illegals committing the crimes, last month a policeman was killed just pulling a traffic violater over by an illegal. Our cops in our small town say going into the barrio is worse than any other neighborhood but killing is so natural. Mexico, Guatamala, have a different view of respecting laws and carry them here.

We have 3 healthcenters in a town under 100,000 that cater to the Hispanics, our foodbanks are overwhelmed, and the welfare systems does not require proof of citizenship or income. EXCEPT if you are white....so try living in our part of the world before calling someone racist who just wants LEGAL immigration.

What line did you stand in and where does this line form?

As someone still going through the legal process after nearly 8 years, I can't help but relate. We did things the legal way and it can make you feel like a fool, especially when you see people saying there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant.

To those here not familiar with the process, you have to go back to the INS office multiple times, and pay through the nose.

It is a totally different situation living on the border versus a lovely vacation to a Mexican resort town.
Talk with the law enforcement on the border, take a road trip from Brownsville to Arizona...you might learn something.

No one takes Tancredo seriously but A SECURE BORDER YOU BET !

Am I correct in thinking that the narrator is the same one who did Vernon Robinson's "mariachi party" radio ad in 2006? The one with the line "If Brad Miller had his way, America would be nothing but one big fiesta for illegal aliens and homosexuals"? It sounds an awful lot like him.
