From another new source for entertainment on the web, but "teh cool" quotient for this one is fairly high: MyDamnChannel has Harry Shearer and Don Was. And it's nice to see Presidential candidates actually saying nothing (as opposed to saying nothing while pretending to say something) for once.

How annoying I couldn't watch or access the Clinton v Romney debate, but I did get a load of the Biden/Thompson face-off.
One thing I learned was Fred KNOWS how to hold his face still in front of a camera; Biden does not.

I am a big fan of science and this story (see below) is a follow up to a story that I had noticed earlier regarding a comparison between monkeys and humans short term memory. Apparently, a monkey's mental mathematics skills are just as good as those of college age humans when language is removed. Choke another one up to evolution.

Monkeys and college students as good at mental math

"It shows when you take language away from a human, they end up looking just like monkeys in terms of their performance," Cantlon said in a telephone interview."

Military Denies Gitmo Edited Wikipedia Bios of Castro and Camp Delta
By James Gordon Meek

Today we reported in the New York Daily News about a team of Wikileaks.org sleuths who blew the cover of U.S. military hackers who edited entries for their sister site, the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Among the edits was an addition to Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s biography, where they labeled him “an admitted transsexual.”

The Wikileaks snoops traced computer Internet Protocol numbers - digital fingerprints - for the people who made the Castro edit, as well as those who removed detainee ID numbers from the bios of several terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay’s Camp Delta and changed the phrase “invasion of Afghanistan” to the more banal “war in Afghanistan” on another page about Gitmo.

The military was asked for comment on Wednesday, but didn’t respond until this morning.

In a statement, Army Lt. Col. Edward Bush [NO RELATION] insisted that no one at Joint Task Force-Guantanamo had edited any of the pages - despite the fact that Wikipedia has the hackers dead to rights as using JTF-GTMO computers.

“There has been no attempt to alter/change any information that has been posted anywhere,” Lt. Col. Bush said in the statement e-mailed to me. “That would be unethical.”

Bush said in a subsequent phone call that there’s no way to know if any of the 3,000 uniformed military at Gitmo was responsible for the documented changes, but he promised his public affairs staff was not behind it. He also blasted Wikipedia for identifying one sailor in his office by name, who has since received death threats for simply doing his job - posting positive comments on the Internet about Gitmo.

Oceans’s Growing Acidity Alarms Scientists - http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/23138.html
While the sea levels are rising as glaciers and polar ice melt, and increasing water temperatures affecting global weather patterns, there is also something else happening. As the oceans absorb more and more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, they’re gradually becoming more acidic. And some scientists fear that the Change May Be IRREVERSIBLE. At risk are sea creatures up and down the food chain, from the tiniest phytoplankton and zooplankton to whales, from squid to salmon to crabs, coral, oysters and clams.

Ok Andy. What doya wanna know about why I don't support a non-catholic papist, a guy who claims to want less government, except for women when it comes to choice-hell a doctor who, by his anti-choice stance seeks to vitiate the privacy between a doctor and a patient...I am a socialist. I believe in taking care of one's neighbours. A rising tide lifting all boats and none of this "Me first, Me second and if there's any left over Me third."

I am not a 'thing' person. Not much of a consumer. Ron Paul and his band of merry shitheads are all about "Fuck thy neighbour" IMHO

Andy K's picture

miss kitty-

When I said, "Ya know, the ad hominem attacks against Paul are gettin’ a bit disgustin’."

I was referrin' to Paul in LA, not Ron Paul. He and I were both accused of trollin' a coupla weeks back because we dared to have opinions that ran counter to the "Get rid of Pelosi" fever. Neither of us has stated that Bushco doesn't deserve impeachment, only that it's a fruitless endeavor. Do ya think that all of a sudden that Republicans are goin' to open up as witnesses just because a Democratic House passes impeachment charges? Do ya think that, even if presented the facts, that 17 or 18 Republican Senators would vote fer conviction?

And do ya think that someone in the comments could just say, "Yes, it would make me feel better if the administration was impeached, though I know they won't be convicted," rather than, "Paul in LA is a troll, and Andy K blows him under the bridge"?

That's what I'm gettin' at.

Andy K's picture

But the misunderstandin' is kinda funny.

And, btw, I still know ya can find my e-mail address somehow or another and contact me. 'Cause there's somethin' I'd like to talk to ya about, but I'd much rather not do so publicly.

And, trust me, it's not anything fawning.

Jesse's picture

WTF is the point of this????

Waste of effin time even if you don't ask me.

miss_kitty's picture

I don't know why you included me in this-I wasn't hopping on you guys. And I usually ignore P in LA, but the last couple of days I've been giving him a friendly nudge here and there.

Did someone say that shit to you? Did you write the site mods? did it get deleted? Sorry about the Ron Paul thing-these days you know he's so annoyingly all over the place that I just thought...

Andy K's picture

Yeah, the person who I cited in the final paragraph cracked that way. And, no, I didn't contact the site monitors, I just didn't escalate to a full-on flame war. Then, the next day, that person and one or two others decided to continue the ad hominem attacks even though Paul in LA and I weren't commentin'.

So your "nudge" seemed to me a bit less than friendly. Sorry fer that mis-understandin'. But I'm pretty sure that Paul in LA has gotta be feelin' the same as I do. Not that I ever have contact with him outside of the comments, or anything, but I've caught the same shit- in much smaller increments- and I've started gettin' a bit testy.

And, fer the record, I hate it when Paul in LA casually calls people liars. Maybe some of 'em are...but I remember the one about the boy who cried wolf.

miss_kitty's picture

I treat Paul in LA with respect. I disagree 1000 % with him, but I admire his tenacity and his commitment to his beliefs. So while we have disagreements, I don't recall where it's gotten nasty. It may have once, but I'm trying hard not to be rude so much. If it's a regular that I find odious, I'll skip saying anything to them.

Andy K's picture

I've got a feelin' that the two of ya agree on more than you think ya do. Me, I think he's spot-on when it comes to Pelosi.

Her House has passed a lot of good, progressive legislation. It's not her fault that the Senate Republicans block everything they can, and what gets through the Senate gets vetoed. Yet the "dis-affiliated lefties" (Paul in LA's term) see only where impeachment lies(lays?...I'll never figure that one out 'til it's addressed on 30 Rock) in relation to Pelosi's table and disregard everything else. They are wearin' fuckin' blinders. And it pisses 'em off when Paul in LA- or I- point this out.

But I'm sure that ya treat the guy with respect. I haven't been hangin' around these parts much the last few weeks, fearin' that by doin' so might cause my head to explode. Sorry fer assumin' that ya might act otherwise.

miss_kitty's picture

Are you postin' at all on the LNMC thread any more, m_k? My schedule makes it a dis-incentive to stay up after 10 pm, and most of those threads post after 11 pm(ET).
