All the major newspapers refused to print Wexler, Gutierrez, and Tammy Baldwin's impeachment op-ed recently so it's surprising to see The Washington Post finally allow an argument to be made for just that on their sacred pages: "Why I Believe Bush Must Go: Nixon Was Bad. These Guys Are Worse." The Village elders will be most upset.

Impeachment is mere the investigations into possible criminal conduct by any branch of the united states government. There are many various outcomes and penalties, but the investigations must occur, NOW!

I believe that as the crimes and evidence are uncovered against this corrupt administration, we will see nancy p's 'votes needed' materialize out of thin air, lest the GOP suffer another 20+ year exile from the seat of power in Wash D.C.

As time for impeaching the bastards winds down, suddenly corporate media bravely prints shocking op-eds, to prove how fair and balanced they are?

Not buying it. These corporate media monopolies need to be destroyed.

Right On Mr.McGovern ,
I read this first thing this morning and jumped up and yelled YES , perfect timing , hang these bastards ( after the trial of course ) , to bad there can not be a trial , who would be in the jury ?? .

I would be more surprised if none of that was going on. We've given away billions of dollars to some really shady folks. We've provided WMD technology to people that would love to use it against us.

Cheney and the rest of the tyrants that make up the Dumbya administration are, without a doubt, the worst criminals to ever occupy the White House. McGovern's article makes a clear case for impeachment. Some say it is too late, they're wrong!

it is so obvious!

Not buying it. These corporate media monopolies need to be destroyed. Lollimom

Yes, they're pathetic. Boycott corporate media of all kinds NOW! Kill your television and never pay a cable bill ever again. That is a good start.

And McGovern left out what may be the most damning cause for impeachment of all, the fact that this administration has systematically used the power of the Chief Executive to protect those most responsible for the attacks on 9/11:

www.asecondlookatthesaudis.com

Not only is this cause for impeachment, but it is flat-out treason.

Prosecution.

CNN has also reported this story. I'm glad it has made on MSM. Watching the opinions, many people are pissed off that Pelosi took impeachment off the table. While Bush still has supporters(Ignorant Whack-Os) the majority of Americans believe impeachment is definitely justified. I ,for one, would love to see Bush and all of his co-horts go down as the worst adminastrations in history. I would also send a message that Jeb Bush could never get elected as president. I shudder at the thought.

If we impeached now, no government money would go to the boosh library, he'd probably be stripped of the presidential pension, chainey and others impeached with him could never hold an office of public trust, and it would pave the way for possible criminal trials.

And before anyone makes a claim of prosecutorial discretion, that's largely not in the investigation stage since all an impeachment is is essentially doing is what a grand jury does. Billing (impeached), and no-billing (acquitted). The idea that you can't get enough people in the Senate to convict (probably true in this case with obstructionist Republicans) is irrelevant. Could you imagine a prosecutor refusing to put someone on trial because he wasn't sure he could get a jury to convict? They might not try someone if they're not sure of their evidence, otherwise it would be a dereliction of the duties as court officers.

Way to go George!!! (McGovern that is). Quite a piece, though there are also many impeachable offenses you did not mention. The readers on C&L know well what they are.

I only want the other george (the war criminal, bush) to be gone, by whatever means. He has damaged this country so that average Americans may not be able to hold their heads high with pride for decades to come. Indeed, bush is worse than Nixon ever could be.

The name of george bush should go down in infamy, joined by his architect, cheney and all the others who have tried to destroy the US during this disastrous 8 years. It would also be most fitting if bush and his cabal were tried for war crimes, and suffered the logical punishments for such crimes, as did Sadaam Hussein.

This is what Edmonds couldn't get American legislators to even listen to or anyone in the US press to print. It is a bombshell, and The London Times is no tabloid. I think they must see the potential of a valid story here. I hope she has finally found the chink in the wall.

Awesome. Really awesome.
*

Doesn't Rupert Murdoch own the London Times now?

Will congress find the balls to do it? I had thought that impeachment hearings would be a waste of time. But now with the influx of energized young new voters pushing change, dems would be smart to start hearings. It looks possible that this energized wave will elect either Obama or Edwards. By starting hearings now it will put the repugs on the defensive. The rightwing slime machine will have to spend time defending the policys of bush and the repugs. Edwards or Obama can run on offense all the to the whitehouse.

Impeachment is the least of their worries. War crime trials in the Hague are in Bush and Cheney's future. But Impeachment would be a good start!

The reality is that some news programs are starting to take their stories directly from internet sites such as C&L, Reddit, Digg, etc... b/c they can know if the stories will be popular, so if we spread it around enough the gravity of the story has to sink in somewhere.

I would also add that their wealth should be hunted down and confiscated, as proceeds from drug sales are. It should be used to aid in reparations, which we surely owe the the rest of the world for the heinous crimes committed by CheneyBushco. ALL of 'their' money.

Actually, the Times of London is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who owns The Sun, the New York Post and FOX 'News' among other crappy organs.

We need hearings just to show the rest of the world that we are serious about correcting the wrongs that have been committed by our leaders over the past 7 years.

No doubt the wingers will take this as an opportunity to once-again mock McGovern for being right about the issues in 1972.

Former CIA Analyst Says Evidence Abounds for Impeachment
sent by OrpRam
The evidence for impeachment of the president and vice president is overwhelming, former CIA analyst-daily presidential briefer Ray McGovern told a room full of people at the Portsmouth Public Library. McGovern, who provided daily briefings for former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush as well as other high ranking officials during his 27 year CIA career, said he has witnessed a “prostitution of his profession” as the Bush administration lied to the American people about the evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Scary thought isn't it? Just horrible!

Sheesh

If things work out in a strictly legalistic basis, impeachment & removal from office would be the best these people could hope for.

if not convictions and sentencings for all the high crimes, treason and war crimes they have embraced as their political platform.

George McGovern - another war hero portrayed by the GOP as a coward.

We can all dream, but we all know impeachment is off the table. Best case scenario? Other nations declare him and his gang of thugs war criminals and arrest them and bring them to trial. Won't happen in the US.

Correction: the village idiots.

Just curious - how many of you screaming for Bush's blood actually voted for him in 2000 and/or 2004?

Granted - the 2000 election was a travesty of justice - (thank you Katherine Harris and the Supreme Court!), but how do you explain the overwhelming endorsement of Bush in 2004????

How many people who hated Bush never got off their apathetic backsides and go out and VOTE????

It's bizarre! The US invades Iraq to restore democracy - but the basic democratic duty ie. voting is ignored by more than 50% of the population!!!

The US should introduce COMPULSORY voting! It is one day every 4 years and could mean the difference of yet another awful president like Bush or something much better! A rat turd would be better!!!!

Now that the attention is on the 2008 election - I dread to think what else Bush and Cheney can do before they leave office!

Unless impeachment proceedings begin PRONTO - I believe that Bushy will invade Iran before he goes!

Nancy and Harry - you were voted in to DO SOMETHING!!!! Your apathy will definitely be remembered at the next elections!!!

IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!

And p.s. - Dear Hague - start the war crimes tribunal NOW!

When the Democratic president takes over, we cannot allow these things to go unpunished. I know we have to have a positive message and move in the direction of redressing the sickness in this country, but I will be totally pissed if Cheney/Bush and ALL the people who have worked for them and have committed crimes are granted amnesty. We cannot say if you are rich and powerful, you can commit any crime you want, even treason, and get away with it. That would not be a country of laws in my eyes.

I fell in love with McGovern, politically speaking, about 40 years ago. He'd still get my vote today.

They allowed this because it is McGovern, so that the village eldgers and Fox news can dismiss this as 'that whacko socialist McGovern'

This is completely off-topic, but I wanted to tell of something that happened to me on the HuffPO site. An article was posted by Ari Emanuel (brother of Rahm, Dickhead-IL) basically recounting the failures of Bushco. I wrote two comments about how much Bush was enabled by Ari's brother and the rest of the Dem turncoats of the DLC, and how if he and the rest of them had stood up instead of kissing Chimpy's ass perhaps Bush would not have gotten away with as much. I also stated that I was extremely upset at how Rahm had taken credit - along with his DLC buddies - for the Dem victory in 2006, when we all know it was bloggers from the netroots and progessive, not centrist, Dems that turned the tide in our favor. My comments were never printed. As a matter of fact, I responded again 2 or 3 times and again, no such luck. What gives? Just because Ari is related to a 3rd-rate congressman he can't take criticism? What a pussy!

Although I think that Bush and Cheney need to be impeached by the american people...the U.S. has not signed on as a member of the United War Crimes Tribuninal because they were afraid that the they could be sent there if they were ever accused of war crimes..if I am wrong I apologize now...but thats what I think I heard a couple of years back.

Oh come on. They let McGovern and not the present Congressman editorialize because the neocon Post can easily marginalize impeachment supporters as McGovernite old irrelevant hippies.

May I say, about time! The big question is will the lefty blogosphere get behind Wexler's petition and push to get the signups over 1 million by Jan 15? C&L, FDL, atrios and others have a very wide readership and could do for Wexler what they did for Dodd, that is give him the kind of unremitting support so that impeachment hearings can no longer be suppressed.

This can't be repeated enough. The US Congress didn't do anything about it? What a suprise!

I (along with 75% of AMERICA) agreed with the former Senator. That initiating an impeachment hearing is at least sends a message that AMERICA opposed to the lawlessness of the current Bush/Cheney Administration and the complicity of the Speaker of the House and the Chairman of the judiciary committee for allowing these abuses to continue which is leaving an unprecedented abuses open for the future presidents by failing their duties to defend our U.S. Constitution and to utilize the one viable remedy of IMPEACHMENT prescribed under our U.S. Constitution. It is a complete disregard and disrespect for our founding fathers and to many patriotic AMERICANS who have died and sacrificed their life to fight and defend our most precious document. There is NO excuse acceptable in disobeying this mandated action. No ONE is above the LAW. No Corporation or Special Interest is above the LAW. Any divertion to a "set" LAW; particularly one that has been ACCEPTED for more than 200 years IS clearly a VIOLATION.

I however, do not agree with Mr. McGovern's opinion of the TIME-LINE it would take to IMPEACH. I believe his basis that it might take a long time is based on his experience during the Nixon Impeachment..........several decades ago.

Like my father who is 80 years old does not fully understand that processing time today has been IMPROVED by the help of data collections; and advanced technology that did not exist during the Nixon Era. Computers technology, info accessability are almost instantaneously available to authorized users. So NO......I believe that a hearing can take place soon and done so more efficiently and effectively today. The willingness by the people are already there. The obstruction to this process in not by the people but rather by those elected officials who we have entrusted to execute this process.

THE PROBLEM is IN-HOUSE (House of Congress).

On behalf of my nation that I love and my fellow citizens; I thank Mr. McGovern for doing the right thing and SPEAKING OUT.

This lead me to question WHY the rest of the prominent political leaders are NOT speaking out publicly.

Why are these people being silent about IMPEACHMENT?

As a matter of fact, Harry Shearer is the only blogger on Huffpo I can recall who will actually respond to some of the commenters' posts.

Ultimately, the bloggers make the rules and they can censor anyone at any time they deem necessary, even our friends here at Crooks and Liars (don't mention 9/11 on this site.......oops!)

Let's not get too excited about Senator George McGovern's article being published. The right consider him to be a voice from the fringe so with its publication, they've tainted the idea of impeachment with that same label. At least so goes their thinking, IMHO.

I'm a strong advocate of impeachment, because going through the process would allow us as a country to put a legal closure on many unsettled questions, such as whether the Bush administration knowingly "lied us into war." Since the Congressional leadership hasn't jumped on what many believe would be a "slam dunk" impeachment and conviction with Democrats holding majorities in both houses, there are at least two obvious conclusions:

- evidence of "high crimes and misdemeanors" committed personally by Bush and/or Cheney is in actuality rather flimsy.

- far more complicity than we are currently aware of on the part of Democrats would be revealed in the process.

Nancy Pelosi had no right to "take impeachment off the table." That's not her decision to make. The American people elect representatives to be exactly that - our representatives. Too many elected officials forget who they are working for.

Article Two of the United States Constitution (Section 4) states that "The President, Vice President, and all other civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

She can't take away our constitutional rights any more than Bushco can. We have the right to demand impeachment hearings on this administration because of their crimes.

I agree, McGovern is a national treasure. He also harks back to the days when Democrats and Republicans could be friends and work together. I wonder where this country would be now if he had become President, instead of Nixon.

Talcott @ 15:

I hope Cindy whoops Nancy off the Table.

She's not even running. It was a SYMBOLIC protest, not an actual campaign.

No one ever reports the other half of Speaker Pelosi's statement, which was that the investigations would go forward, and maybe they will reveal something that will bring an impeachment. In other words, there has to be more than just Democrats and leftists demanding impeachment. The other party has to do THEIR duty, or else the 75-25 split in the Senate is fatal to any such effort.

Maybe the Sibel Edmonds bombshells linked in #1 will be that scandal. One thing is for sure, bashing Pelosi has been completely ineffectual and counterproductive.

MN USA @ 82:

Nancy Pelosi had no right to "take impeachment off the table." That's not her decision to make.

No, you are wrong, it is absolutely her decision to make, and she made it. She accepted the onus for preventing a failed conviction, which would deliver a new mandate to the bastards who seized the country.

A year later, failing to convict Cheney wouldn't be such a bad outcome, so I believe that that impeachment should go forward. We have about two months to make that happen if it is going to, but hanging around bashing the scapegoat will not get it done.

bettestreep @ 54:

Just curious - how many of you screaming for Bush's blood actually voted for him in 2000 and/or 2004?

Not me. And I was a registered Republican and actually changed parties so I wouldn't have to vote for him (I tended to vote Democratic anyway so it was time to change). I did some research on Bush before the 2000 election and it was obvious he had no distinctive qualifications. It was well known he had one of the worst environmental records as Governor of Texas.

I was also against this dumb Iraq war from the start. It never made sense how Hussein could be a threat with two no-fly zones imposed on him, the Iraq economy under continual sanctions and the continual threat of arms inspections. How was he a threat to this country.

And then Bush continued the sabre rattling with Iran after he was wrong with Iraq.

His lies have cost the deaths of over a million people. I still can't believe that 50 million of our American Citizens can be so dumb as to vote this clown in office . . . twice for God's sake!

I'm not married to any political party. I vote for who is the best qualified individual. Republicans seem to be married to their political party and would vote for Bozo the clown if he was the only Republican running for office. They are so short sided and not forward thinking at all. You can't be pro-war and pro-life at the same time. They are a bunch of hypocrites.

Proud American @ 72:

THE PROBLEM is IN-HOUSE (House of Congress).

No, the problem is in the Senate.

My Rep., Diane Watson, says we are 30 votes shy for impeachment in the House. In Conyers' committee, it is maybe one or two votes to change and the Cheney impeachment can reach the floor. Thirty votes in the House is not impossible.

The problem REMAINS the 40 votes shy in the Senate, a 'House' in which getting four or five more votes would be a seachange, much less ten times that.

Chip @ 85:

I still can't believe that 50 million of our American Citizens can be so dumb as to vote this clown in office . . . twice for God's sake!

Bush was never legally elected--this is a coup.

The actual number of votes for an illegal gov't are not important.

Very true, Crimes have been committed during the past seven years and the LAW demands Accountability!!!

Impeach BUSH AND CHENEY, AND PELOSI, HOYER AND REID too if they continue to obstruct justice.

the U.S. has not signed on as a member of the United War Crimes Tribuninal because they were afraid that the they could be sent there if they were ever accused of war crimes

Ron Paul especially brought bills forward to bar any cooperation with the ICC, and in fact brought forward an amendment authorizing Bush to militarily attack Holland if the ICC arrested any US service person for warcrimes.

It's well past time to determine the failure of this administration, in oh so many ways.

Then why don't you get to work figuring out why the FBI cooperated with the Shitehouse in allowing Nine-eleven suspects to flee the country, way back when. Maybe you can figure out also why the Justice Dept. has taken no action on the 25 major felonies documented by (then-Ranking Member) Conyers in his 2004 book. Etc.

Impeachment, conviction, these do NOT produce criminal charges. The only punishment is removal -- and, btw, you need the actual votes for conviction, or you don't even achieve that.

War Crimes: The Posse Gathers
By Jeremy Brecher and Brendan Smith

Foreign Policy In Focus

Diverse forces are assembling to bring Bush administration officials to account for war crimes. Cindy Sheehan, Gold Star Mother for Peace, insists: “We cannot have these people pardoned. They need to be tried on war crimes and go to jail.” Paul Craig Roberts, Hoover Institution senior fellow and assistant secretary of the treasury under Ronald Reagan, charges Bush with “lies and an illegal war of aggression, with outing CIA agents, with war crimes against Iraqi civilians, with the horrors of the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo torture centers” and calls for the president's impeachment. Anne-Marie Slaughter, dean of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton and former president of the American Society of International Law, declares: “These policies make a mockery of our claim to stand for the rule of law. [Americans] should be marching on Washington to reject inhumane techniques carried out in our name.”

Can such disparate forces as the peace movement, conservative advocates of the rule of law, and human rights advocates join to halt high government officials demonstrably engaged in criminal enterprise? Can they reach out and appeal to the deep but vacillating commitment of the American people to the national and international rule of law? Or will the Bush administration divide the posse and retain for itself the mantle of defender of international law and the U.S. Constitution?

Actually, when GWB said he authorized the NSA to monitor American citizens without securing warrants through the FISA court, he was admitting he committed a crime as it's illegal for the President to do what he did. He said he did it numerous times and would do it again. As his confession to "high crimes," let alone "misdemeanors," was public, recorded, and probably secured without resorting to "enhanced interrogation techniques," the confession of repeated criminal acts should be a solid starting place for a criminal prosecution and impeachment.

Yes, Speaker Pelosi, the American People, We the People, are putting impeachment back on the table.

Dennis Kucinich presented the bill for the Impeachment of Cheney. This is why the Media excludes him from the debates.

[Webshot taken Sunday evening of petition tally]
Florida Representative Robert Wexler is steadily closing in on 200,000 signatures on an online petition he posted in December calling for citizen support of impeachment proceedings commencing at once against Vice President Richard B. Cheney.
Rep. Wexler, a member of the House Judiciary Committee where impeachment proceedings are considered, has said that he plans to submit this list to the HJC when the House of Representatives returns to session the week of January 15th.
Former Democratic Party Presidential nominee Senator George McGovern announced today that he has finally painfully come to agree that impeachment hearings are warranted and are in the best interest of the nation. McGovern did so in an article published in Sunday's Washington Post entitled: Nixon Was Bad. These Guys Are Worse.
If you agree with Rep. Wexler and Senator McGovern and believe that an investigation of Cheney's pre-war statements and actions is warranted and are interested in adding your name to the petition, you can do so online at: www.WexlerWantsHearings.com

Just as key Democrats in Congress knew about waterboarding back in 2002, it has also been reported they were informed about NSA's surveillance program at the time it began. In neither case did they do anything to stop it.

Well they pulled it 12 hours later.

Headline: Don't Count Kucinich Out Yet
By Joel Wendland

Ignored by the media. Written off by the Democratic Party elite. Damned with faint praise by many liberals. Dennis Kucinich's campaign for president sends a clear message: End the war now. Single-payer, not-for-profit universal health care. Impeach the Bush administration.

For this message, many core Democratic and left-leaning voters say they support Rep. Kucinich and have even voted for him in several Internet surveys.

Last July, Kucinich polled well in MoveOn.org's online poll following its presidential forum, placing second behind behind John Edwards.

In an online survey following a presidential forum last August sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign and broadcast online by MTV's Logo, Kucinich polled second behind Sen. Barack Obama.

More recently, however, Kucinich has won large support in online surveys conducted by Internet-based organizations. Kucinich captured 41 percent of the vote in an online survey conducted by the Progressive Democrats of America, nearly doubling John Edwards' second-place finish.
In December, Kucinich scored very well in an online poll sponsored by Democracy for America, an Internet-based advocacy organization headed by Jim Dean, brother of Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean. Kucinich won 32 percent of the 150,000 votes cast, outscoring both Obama and Edwards.

Also, a poll conducted by the The Nation magazine some time back showed Kucinich with 35 percent of the vote, Obama second with 24 percent and Edwards third with 13 percent.

The Nation writer John Nichols said, “The DFA and PDA poll results give Kucinich an additional measure of credibility as he reaches out to key activists, including Democrats who are currently leaning toward other contenders.”

According to the Kucinich campaign, "Kucinich has won more than a dozen major on-line polls and post-debate surveys, including one conducted by ABC News."

Unfortunately, Rep. Kucinich's Internet-based support has not translated well into a strong showing in the polls. An ABC poll conducted just prior to the New Hampshire debates last week put the Ohio representative at 3 percent. The poll was part of the ABC/Facebook "Election Pulse." On Facebook, Kucinich polled 6.67 percent.

What is startling about these facts, however, is that despite coming in behind Kucinich in this "Election Pulse" both on Facebook and the ABC poll, ABC included Gov. Bill Richardson in ABC's Democratic debate last Saturday night, while excluding Rep. Kucinich.

Ironically, the debate was billed as a debate of the leading candidates.

In response to ABC's troubling decision to exclude Rep. Kucinich, the Kucinich campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, claiming that the ABC television network “is violating its obligation to operate in the public interest."

The Kucinich campaign further argued that the event “is not a true presidential primary debate without including all credible candidates, but instead is effectively an endorsement of the candidates selected by ABC.”

The campaign also cited a conflict of interest on the part of ABC, which “is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walt Disney, Co., whose executives have contributed heavily to other Democratic presidential primary candidates, including Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, and Governor Bill Richardson.”

The corporate media simply cannot be allowed to choose who the candidates in the election race are. That should be left to voters, contends the Kucinich campaign.
