Bill’s on fire! Mark Hoback at The Aristocrats:   The Barack Obama campaign faced a new predicament today after former President Bill Clinton accepted his challenge to a dance competition. ..."My God, the man was on fire," said June Renault, an instructor at the [dance] studio. "He said he wanted to learn a few new steps, but truth be told, he already knew more than I did, so I said he should just work with what he has. I mean, I put on 'Funky Cold Medina' and he just mopped the floor with me."

Obama released a statement this afternoon saying that he was far too busy to dance, and besides "it wouldn't be fair to take advantage of an old man."  Read the rest...

Well, wherever your sympathies may lie, here's Proof Positive That ‘Ole Bill Clinton is a Little Strange.

*laughs*
better wise up quick barack, us grrls won't vote for anyone who doesn't have happy feet.

If you have seen 'A' Daily Show lately where Jon Stewart dedicated sometime in that issue, you could see that it's the media which is hyping the race war to target against Hillary Clinton. Hillary made an honest comment about LJ and yet somehow with the media hyped, it became Hillary targetting MLK. So if the blacks themselves think that this is an issue, and we lost the presidency because of this, i would say blame it for themselves for bringing more sufferings to their own people.

Clinton had done so much for the blacks in the 90s, and now they are all attacking Clinton just because of that 1 comment which was being hyped? Do you know the decision that LJ faced during the Civil Rights Act? He willingly surrendered the South to the Republicans just so Blacks can have a better life. And yet i don't see any black being appreciative of that or in fact voted consistently with the democrats!! The South became the Republican stronghold because of the race issue and you think that Obama can make a difference? Regardless of having Hillary or Obama, we will still have a 51% President.

And for your information, Obama thinks that he can score with the voters at the Bay Area because of his progressiveness. Well firstly he is against the gay movement, his environmental record is not that clean, and from the SC debate, you can see that he has very little knowledge about economics... and the Bay Area is what gives California to the Democrats. Till Obama changes his stances on those issues (which he needed those issues to get the south and midwest), and 40% of the voters here being independant, i forsee California switching sides to the Republicans by a very minimal margin if Obama gets the nomination.

No matter which candidate you support, you must decide now to support the eventual nominee, warts and all.

Pretending that you'll vote for a Republican instead of your favorite candidate is simply playing into the hands of the Right. Do you want to be a tool of the Right?

If you support America, you'll acknowledge that the worst Democratic candidate is going to be better for America than the best Republican candidate. And I don't say this lightly. The national infrastructure is crumbling, from the roads and bridges to the system of justice and the Bill of Rights.

You might not get everything you want from the Democratic candidate, but you will get NOTHING you want from the Republican candidate.

By all means go dance Bill. Obama has to work on solutions for health care, global warming and energy. All problems that you ignored in the 90s.

People.... this is nonsense...

How about we start registering voters and stop w/ this buls*** of "you did this when you were 33... no YOU did that when you were 32!"...

And the last thing we need now is to give more ammunition to the Mitt people..... yes I know everyone thinks McCain is going to win the nomination but watch closely at what's happening w/ the Repugs and you'll see that it will be Romney (the empty suit, and unfetered free-marketeer) who will be their nominee....

Please go out and register voters people!!! No one will give a rats ass about this post after the November election.

Here is an international story on Obama, it's insightful and The New Statesman has no axe to grind.

Obama Unmasked

Obama released a statement this afternoon saying that he was far too busy to dance, and besides “it wouldn’t be fair to take advantage of an old man.”

lol, that made me laugh :D

I love that picture! You show them Big Dawg!

I know that people hate it when commenters divulge their ethnicity, etc.. BUT AS A woman of color, I can say that Bill & Hillary Clinton have done more for minorites than Obama ever had - or ever will do for minorities in his lifetime. Toni Morrison was spot on.

Obama is more white that Bill is.

Baby Bill Got Back! I'd like to dance with Bill.

As an Edwards supporter, I'm so glad that we aren't wasting bandwidth on gender or race.

Oh, wait...

“it wouldn’t be fair to take advantage of an old man.”???

Obama... what a d*ck! Showing complete dis-respect for our last Democractic President.... the guy who saved us from living with Bush Sr. for another 4 years!

What should I expect... he admires (or is just pandering for votes from repigs) Ronny Raygun. Not to mention the whole "dance thing" that he said at the debates... that was questionable. He says a LOT of questionable things.

He has no clue how GREAT our economy was in the 90's under Clinton. And BC showed a lot of class accepting his challenge.... Obama did not. Sickening.... I hope Hillary slams him for it.

pissed!

When Obama can be the center of attention he's all for it, but he knows darn well he can't hold a candle to Bill Clinton, in any way. So he'll steer clear and spew his underhanded vile.

Awwwww I want to see a dance off! It's not like the race couldn't use a little levity right about now. Please Barack, take advantage of the old man!

There is nobody with "no axe to grind," I found the article ridiculously ad hominem. Did the New Statesman run a similar article about our president's alcoholism and drug abuse during the 2000 elections I wonder? Not that I can see...

JTM...... thank you!

Well, it will certainly rub some people wrong, but the old saying about "heat" and a "kitchen" applies. His past will be under a microscope and he better get used to it.

Oh no he didnt!!

I agree with shriekingviolent (aiigggghhhhyyyyyy!!) that the challenge would break the ice a bit.

First of all, Obama, Hill and Edwards ALL have the same position on gay marriage.

Secondly, whats your point? What do you mean: "And yet i don't see any black being appreciative of that"; Because Bill Clinton was good to black people, they should elect his wife for president? That's silly.

Thirdly, If you've seen the Daily Show lately, you'd have also seen the segment where Stewart questions Bill's assertion that while he and Chelsea were walking through a CASINO, surrounded by a back of secret service and god knows how many other support people, he over heard someone threatening a Hillary supporter if they voted for Hillary. Riiiiiight.

On the other hand, Obama should definitely AVOID running against Bill.

Odanny@17:

Precisely! If Obama can't take it from a Clinton, he's going to get creamed by the 'thugs, let alone if he actually does become president.

I had no problem ignoring the author's bias.

This is what makes Bill Clinton sexy! The saxophone, the dancing - it's brilliant. Let Obama groan and moan. It's just hilarious how Bill Clinton's magnetic persona has affected him.

When Al Gore "lost" the 2000 presidential election, it was the worst thing that could have happened to our country.

But it might be the best thing that ever happened to Al Gore. Since, he found his progressive voice, and has been a vocal champion on our side for long time.

And now, Al Gore has outrightly endorsed gay marriage.

For what it's worth, it's pretty cool.

I think Obama is right to not engage with anything President Clinton is trying to engage in him at this point. It's all frugal and staged.

He needs to stay on message and come out blasting when his message is lied about and distorted. He is currently doing a very good job of putting team Clinton on the ropes and gaining support from all walks because of his positive message and clear ability to bring people together.

He is going to always faced with the hate mongers on both sides of the political system and from all walks of life, but he is starting to get real good at firing back when he needs to and thats what counts.

NC's so dry from global warming, it has to shut down its nuclear power plants!

Please don't act like the media started this whole race issue. Damn it Obama ran as a race neutral candidate in Iowa. It wasn't until Hillary was down big did she bring up that dumb comment about MLK. It wasn't until then that Bill talked about Obama being a "fairytale." All that kind of stuff brought race up.

I highly recommend Buchanan's wonderful piece about the Clinton's ghettoizing of Obama. It is downright disgusting what the Clinton's are doing and everyone ought to be offended.

I find it highly unnecessary that you posted a link to such an obvious disgusting hit piece against Obama. It really troubles me what lengths the Clinton supporters will go to ruin Obama. If they are all so close on the issues why are we considering putting Hillary, one of the most divisive people in politics, in charge?

love how you speak for the rest of his life name one thing personally for the black comminity, black people had it better when bill was in office because the economy was good. and as americans blacks benefited because the american economy was good. and he had help from a congress who actually did their jobs.so unless you can show what they personally did for a black community. please don't use this argument again.not an obama supporter but i do know that you can look up what he did for the blaclk community as a state senator.

My goodness!!! What is wrong with you people? Here is a lighthearted exchange and all of a sudden Clinton is damned and but poor Obama is just much too busy... get a life all of you!!
The Clintons are not the devil incarnate and Obama does not walk on water. If Obama can't take the heat or the jokes from his own party then he better get out of the race right now. There isn't one piece of Bill or Hillary's life that hasn't been put under the microscope a thousand times over. Do you not think Obama's life or early life will not be investigated by every republican who breathes? This behavior you expect from republicans but not democrats. And I would love some of the Obama supporters to exactly tell me what about Obama is so wonderful that you slobber over? He is promising the same things George Bush did..nothing more...nothing less.. I can bring Washington together...I have a vision...I will be bipartisan... WHAT"S DIFFERENT????? After what the republicans have done to you as a party and to your country are you so ready to play nicey nicey and bipartisan that if it was Obama over McCain, that they might as well vote for John McCain and there goes the WH again?

I had no problem ignoring the author's bias.

I work on Obama's campaign and there was no news in that article for me, except that the author acts like his article is some revelation and expose, which it is not. If he had read "The Audacity of Hope" first he may have felt differently. But there is no end of self important, opinionated people who enjoy trashing others for a living. They will never be remembered for contributing anything positive to our political dialogue.

Being raised in a political family, I understand that politics is not a game for the thin skinned or weak. Obama needs to concentrate on redemptive messages that resonate with voters.

I am so glad Obama is striking back! Good for him. Bill deserves NO respect. NAFTA, the bullshit welfare reform. "First Black President" my ass!

Obama insightful? did he just insult old people or did I read that wrong?

Wow, the Hillbots have finally dropped the mask, and have virtually admitted.
this is the Clinton Co-Presidency they want?

And, they will crush anyone, anything that gets in their way?

Right now, If I was Obama, I would seriously consider just calling a cease fire,
in fact, just withdrawing from the campaign. and let the Clintons ride this flaming
zepplin down into the ground...

After 4 years of a diasterous John McCain's presidency, riddled with the Stagflation
and the aftermath of Iraq, it will be Obama's democratic party to lead back from the
wilderness....

But, that's not going to happen, it's just going to go into this brutal war, and
Hillary will win the nomination, and lose with almost no black vote in the fall....

Wow...Just watching The Colbert Report. The Colbert Report donated $171,225.00 to the Yellow Ribbon Fund. The money was from the proceeds of the "Wrist Strong" bracelets he was selling. I think he said they sold 30,000 of them.

Ooo, can I play pundit, too? I mean, I'm sure I can be as inaccurate and biased as those on TV.

How about this? After four years of McCain, Clinton, Huckabee, Obama, or Romney, the poverty rate would clear 20% and someone like Edwards would walk right in, because a majority of Americans would have at least one poor friend (who they knew wasn't a slacker, etc, etc) and so the majority would stop voting against their own interests.

What do I win?

Well, whatever the case, if the Democrats do manage to find a way to lose this presidential election, we're all in for absolute hell. There might not be much for either Obama or Edwards to lead from the wilderness, or anywhere to lead us to.

The next president will appoint the Supreme Court Justice (or two, or three) who determines whether the progress of the late 20th Century -- civil rights, minority rights, voting rights, sexual rights -- will continue or become a mere parenthesis in America's otherwise dismal ability to live up to her founding ideals. With either a neo-con or a theocrat in the White House, and a Congress of either party enabling him, get ready for a full-fledged Endarkenment.

Among our other projects, we have to restore habeas corpus, we have to terminate torture as an official policy, we have to roll back military adventurism as our foreign policy, we have to make significant investment in our domestic infrastructure in order to prevent an already-dwindling middle class from bleeding into an already-bleeding underclass, we have to repair—as much as may be possible—our profaned global reputation as the caretakers and midwives of freedom and justice; we have so much work to do and so little time before our opportunity passes and I can't tell you how tired I am of the Clintons after all of these years, as they cry about how hard it is for them, as they rage at how unfairly they're being treated, how determined they are to bestride our narrow imaginations like a colossus. everybody: it just doesn't matter! it just doesn't matter! it just doesn't matter!

Dear Hillary and Barack,

I am sending you this letter via emails and blogs with the utmost respect for both of your campaigns for the Democratic nomination for President. I am not a wordsmith, so the best words that I can find from the dictionary to describe my feelings are ‘Please cut the shit”. If no one from your inner circles will tell you the truth, if no leader from the Democratic Party will step forward when you need him, (I will take this time and give a big shout out to Howard Dean) then I have to step forward and tell you truth. Americans do not like politics at any cost (well most sane Americans) we hate the mudslinging and name calling and partial truth telling. We hate you making this about you, because actually, you are really on a job interview and you just might not get hired.

This primary is about what is best for the American people in their personal lives, and what is best for the country as a whole. This is not about which one of you can destroy the other the best. If you are looking to divide and destroy the Democratic Party and the country then by all means continue on the paths that you both have chosen.
For the first time in American history, an African American man and a Woman are both viable serious candidates for the Presidency of the United States of America. I know at the end of the day this is competition, but this is a competition that will determine my future and the future of my children and grandchildren, so when you are “taking the gloves off” just act as if my grandchildren are watching and you are their first political teacher. Therefore, what will the lesson for the day be about “Down and Dirty politics”? If you have to lose your soul to become President then you never had a soul to lose.
You are losing me and I can quit you!

Sincerely,
The Human Resources Department for the Presidency of the United States of America.

I want a change too and for the first time ever I hope Hillary's actual "glass ceiling" is the White House; not to be rude dear but your 15 minutes has been far too extended to perhaps 45 minutes, thanks! But we hope to have some lovely departing gifts for you, UPOP! Of course the first words are "Useless Piece of" and the last word is not Pineapple, nor is it Protagonist! No misogyny intended, I just don't want some wife of a wash-up turkey neck-lookin' bitch in charge of the nation immediately after George W. Retard! Do YOU??????

It's seems like some of you are just getting into politics which is good thing. However there is still a lot you've got to learn.
I am a black man and I am definitely going to VOTE for any DEMOCRAT that WE select be it Hillary or Obama. Remember that the party is more important than the individual. This is something some of our young people coming into this process have got to quickly learn.

Virginia continues to lack common sense.

WRONG!

What if some corporate shill decides to run as a democrat and gets so far as to be considered a possible president? Should we all hold our noses and vote for someone that reeks of corruption, just because they're wearing a certain label? Republican or Democrat, you need someone who doesn't sell the country to the highest bidder, unfortunately those people have been overlooked by our shameful media. Oh, it's a Black Guy! Oh, it's a Woman! Haven't you learned not to judge a book by it's cover? The media is playing you people like a fiddle because actual ideas are pushed aside for interracial ratings.

Guys,

We need to stop being passive listeners to everything we hear and think about this in the political spectrum. The Clintons are not bad people, and Obama isn't bad either. If we think on a political level, what we can determine is that the reason the Clintons are fighting hard against Obama is because they probably believe that he cannot win against the Republican candidate.

We have to get out of our bubbles of Obama-worshiping (I'm guilty of it too), and Clinton-whatever, and think: Every American who votes, will more of them vote for Obama than the Republicans? It's true that the bases won't switch if Clinton becomes the candidate, and there might be some shifting if Obama is candidate, but will it be enough... If Mccain does become the Republican nominee, we have to acknowledge that he is center-right, and he will capture a lot of those undecided voters in the middle.

My dad thinks the reason republicans and conservative media outlets are being so hard on Clinton is because they would love it if Obama gets the nomination since they so strongly believe they can defeat him in the general election.

We have to think what's going on in the political realm, Clinton doesn't think Obama can win in the general election. That's why it's become such an important fight. Bill Clinton is seriously putting all of his energy into this.

Get the word out to Kucinich and Edwards......He who breaks the Sibel Edmonds story, crushes the Bush Presidency and takes the Whitehouse.

He who dares wins

"..On the heels of the RIAA's recent decision to criminalize consumers who rip songs from albums they've purchased to their computers (or iPods), the association has now gone one step further and declared that "remembering songs" using your brain is criminal copyright infringement. "The brain is a recording device," explained RIAA president Cary Sherman. "The act of listening is an unauthorized act of copying music to that recording device, and the act of recalling or remembering a song is unauthorized playback..."

I couldn't have agreed more with you Sean. The reasons why Obama is getting votes now partially is due to the right independants switching to him. What makes you think that they wouldn't switch back to their candidate during the general election? Lets take the state of California which the democrats are taking it for granted. Remember that it became our state only when Bill Clinton ran for president. Before that it belongs to the Repug. This state has 40% independant voters and approximately 40% of the votes casted here goes to the Repugs who reside in the rural or more affluent areas such as OC. It's the Bay Area which deliver California to the democrats consistently (thanks to Bush Sr. telling the public that 'there's no difference between exporting corns and silicon chips" though it's factually true in terms of gdp) and three of the most important issues here are the economy, environment and gay rights and all these years there's a clear difference between the Repug and Democrat candidates on those issues. Sad to say Obama is the only candidate among the democrats who are weak on all these 3 issues. Ever wonder why we can't win the South? Because those three issues are against Republican principles and Obama is with the Repugs on this time on those issues. Gay rights == his ultrahomophobic evangelist friend representing his campaign, Economy == not for full universal healthcare and the debate has shown his weakness on this subject, Environment == besides the 2005 energy bill, he took the most money from energy companies and may i just remind you all that Cali got cheated by an energy firm (Enron) in 2001 which cost us several hundred millions of dollars and a high monthly electricity bill now.
So McCain or Romney might just swing enough independants and there goes 55 electoral seats.

Insightful? No. Opinionated and judgmental? Yes.

Ok...will rant for a minute: What did the article say? Did you know this or did you not know ala Obama "I see nothing"
Did the Audacity of Hope talk about the families that lost their housing cause Obama did not know what was going on with Rezko's property? What hope was there for the families in the 30 or so Rezko buildings that defaulted? What hope was there in the millions of affordable housing funds that are gone? Ooops, he did not know. He only worked 5 hours. RIGHT!!!!!!!!
Chicago politics, get used to it. The Chicago papers know it the others ignore it.
PS...Obama did he vote against The Patriot Act? Did he vote against funding the war? Oh, sorry he, in his imagination was against the war. Now we have to play with our imaginary indie friends.

It is also insightful, even if you dont agree with it.

I'm sure Obama fans (I've met the man and genuinely like him) wont like it but they had better get used to hearing worse than this. You have to read between the lines on stories like this, accept the information through a filter, discarding personal opinion.

My mother did not die young (she was 86), but since then I've felt awful waves of sadness. And sometimes I think of people who are mourning loved ones of all ages, due to distinctly unnatural causes. The people dying in Iraq as a consequence of the U.S. war effort. The children in so many countries who lose their lives to the ravages of poverty. The health-care system in the United States that – in the absence of full medical coverage for everyone as a human right – means avoidable death and suffering on a large scale.

In mediaspeak and political discourse, the human toll of corporate domination and the warfare state is routinely abstract. But the results – in true human terms – add rage and more grief on top of grief.

Our own mourning should help us understand and strive to prevent the unspeakable pain of others. And whatever love we have for one person, we should try to apply to the world. I won't ever be able to talk with my mother again, but I'm sure that she would agree.

i think i will email a copy of the diatribe to feinstein in order to bolster the case for the return of the fairness doctrine

Actually, party politics, or partisan politics is a problem. If you want to get the crooks and liars out of office, you have to look at each individual. Voters should be looking at the candidates stated principles and more importantly, their track record, either in office or in the private sector.

Bill is out of bounds with his rhetoric. I was leaning toward Hillary but Bill is hurting the party's chances in November. Electability is the most important thing for me.

Had enough? Support Edwards.

I don't know if anyone else caught the specific language in H.R. 888 ("American Religiosu History Week"), but it's more insidious than promoting the Christian equivalent of madrassa indoctrination.

The resolution calls for recognizing the religious underpinnings of the country as inseparable from the rest of its founding values - a clear rebuttal to Thomas Jefferson's 'wall of separation' remark in his Letter to the Danbury Baptists.

Then, the phrase, 'object, in the strongest terms, to any attempts to remove, obscure, or purposely omit religious references from our Nation's buildings and educational resources,' is a foot in the door for teaching Creationism, school prayer, and superstitious mumbo-jumbo like 'posting the Ten Commandments in the classroom.'

I've already called my congressman. Have you called yours?

The time to fight impinging theocracy is before the Oval Office becomes home to Mullah Huckabee or Sheik Mitt al-Romney. (Or, for that matter, anyone who doesn't grok the concept of religious liberty applying to all faiths - from Judaism and Islam to Wicca and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.)

Mars Up Close {A Bush Parody}

Electability is the most important thing to you and you were leaning towards Hillary?

As far as Obama, between the time he were to get nominated and the general election the Republicans would repeat "Barrack Hussein Osama" so many times in campaign ads that come election day half the country would be convinced Barrack was Saddam and Osama's love child. And don't say the people of this country are too smart to fall for that because half the country supported Bush twice.

What part of Edwards is the most electable and the only candidate polled to beat every Republican presidential candidate do people not understand?

"Obama released a statement this afternoon saying that he was far too busy to dance..."

Sorry, if Obama does not plan to return to D.C. to help filibuster immunity in the FISA legislation, than he has plenty of time to dance with Clinton - that goes for Senator Clinton as well. Maybe they can have a dance off among the three of them hosted by Russert and Williams haha.

What to consider in the latest challenge, “Was Clinton the first black president”?, the question pitched to Barrack Hussein Obama. Then Obama said he needs to observe and make a dance analysis to determine if Bill Clinton was really a brother ? Yuk, Yuk, but, Obama should have let it go and move on, Obama just fell into the race issue in the worst way. Clinton must have read George Lakoff’s book “Whose Freedom” because Clinton just played the media. Actually Clinton is going to show America an other era as an agent of change in the debate process. Joe Scarborough got a whiff of this and almost went insane.

Another dilemma, The Republicans was the party with “Great” ideas in the last ten to fifteen years is what Obama said in an interview, and challenged by Hillary Clinton as were Obama is saying, now it appears Obama supports those Republican ideals, and considers them good. Here, the Democrats have a whole bunch of rhetorical fuel to show how history is written by the Republican Party in the wrong way and made America believe Reagan is great when in reality he was not.

“Great Ideas” are not an impression of saying it is good, this an interesting comment by Obama. Hillary is simply challenging the context in this statement. Joe Scarborough’s and Chris Matthews mind’s on MSNBC just exploded, here they can see it just as plain as other political analyzers and they are all in denial, absolutely inferring Hillary is lying because Obama never said he likes those ideas.

Well folks, there was a very famous commercial from Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, remember those frosted coated corn flakes that Tony the tiger said with a special tone “And Their GREAT” makes me think that Tony Tiger likes Kellogg’s sugar coated corn flakes, with out saying, and you should to. For me Hillary is on the wining side of this challenge. Worse yet the Media is responsible for a lot of the public opinion created during this era. This is it is very telling by Scarborough’s insane reasoning, to avoid the media as the impression on public opinion. Actually Obama goofed on two levels here, one he did prove he likes the those great ideals of the Republicans, likely to get Republican votes, or is Obama testing his ability to cross over like Lieberman? Clinton’s ideals of roll of the dice to doubt what this guy is doing, are most certainly correct.

The fairy tail, is interesting too, Obama is of mixed blood, and his mother from Kansas the heartland of Middle America, his father’s blood of devoted Islamic believes, takes off and leaves them when Obama was two years old. Here, Clinton makes the challenge to a fairy tail which could be that of the America’s greatest folk lore “The Wizard Of OZ”, here Clinton can prove Obama is not wizard you think Obama might be, which makes one think Obama is not the president one would think he thinks he will be.

My personal opinion is disappointed and do not believe Obama should even be considered as a Presidential candidate. In fact as a resident of Illinois I don’t think he should be a Senator. After reading his book called “Audacity of Hope” the end of chapter one reveals and audacity of character that is horrendously racial, bigoted, and telling of Obama’s imagination of Southern White men.

At the end of the very first chapter Obama clearly makes a statement that is absolutely disgusting, bigoted, and shows an immaturity that the media has finally shown America were it moves public opinion in the same way the media has given Bush and Company a pass for the last several decades.

What did Obama say in his writing? Obama said he “IMAGINES SOUTHERN WHITE MEN SAY TO THEIR SONS NIGER THIS AND NIGER THAT” . The rage I felt at the time almost made me feel like destroying something. Obama used the “N” word, here I can not use this word in passing let alone in a nationally published book two years before the election. I am so angry that Mainstream Media considers this black bigot as a uniter.

Barack Hussein Obama reminds me of that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad when he says there are no “Gays” in Iran. Well, we all know they kill them when Iranian’s find them. I wonder if Mahmoud’s mother is from Kansas.

Rich Countries Do $1.8 Trillion of Environmental Damage To Poor Countries - http://www.nbc11.com/news/15113049/detail.html
UC Berkeley researchers report that environmental damage caused by rich nations affects poor nations so much, it costs them more than their combined foreign debt. The study examined the impacts of the expansion of agriculture, deforestation, overfishing, loss of swamps and ozone completion from 1961 to 2000.
"We think the measured impact is conservative. And given that it's conservative, the numbers are very striking," said Srinivasan, who is now at the Pacific Ecoinformatics and Computational Ecology Lab in Berkeley. "To our knowledge, our study is the first to really examine where nations' ecological footprints are falling, and it is an interesting contrast to the wealth of nations."
Climate change is expected to increase the severity of storms and extreme weather, including prolonged droughts and flooding, with an increase in infectious diseases.
Ozone depletion mostly affects health, with increases expected in cancer rates, cataracts and blindness. All of these will affect vulnerable low-income countries disproportionately, researchers said.

This is worth a repost, because of how disgusting it is & how its a major cause of the coming recession/depression: Chalmers Johnson, How to Sink America - http://www.tomdispatch.com/post/174884/chalmers_johnson_how_to_sink_america
It's not just that our tastes for foreign goods, including imported oil, vastly exceed our ability to pay for them. We are financing them through massive borrowing. On November 7, 2007, the U.S. Treasury announced that the national debt had breached $9 trillion for the first time ever. This was just five weeks after Congress raised the so-called debt ceiling to $9.815 trillion.
If you begin in 1789, at the moment the Constitution became the supreme law of the land, the debt accumulated by the federal government did not top $1 trillion until 1981. When George Bush became president in January 2001, it stood at approximately $5.7 trillion. Since then, it has increased by 45%. Robert Scheer: Who Will Take On the Banks? - http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20080122_who_will_take_on_the_banks/
Deregulation became the mantra covering corporate theft in both Republican and Democratic administrations, and it is amazing that not one of her interlocutors at the South Carolina debate asked Sen. Clinton about her husband’s signing of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999, which permitted banks, stockbrokers and insurance companies to merge, overturning one of the major regulatory achievements of the New Deal.
With a military budget that has more than doubled since 9/11, soaking up trillions of dollars in obligations for future generations, it is stupid to argue about whether the Democrats or Republicans would spend more on needed domestic programs, because the money for those programs will not be available.
Its by design....this is Reaganomics/Bushonomics/corporatism on full display...proof that 1) doesn't work, 2) you can't run a country by this 'ideology', 3) empires always fall in this manner...always (Ancient Empires, Empires A.D., French, British, Soviets, etc)

As the middle and poorer classes get crushed under a mounting pile of debt, and living costs grow faster than wages, we’re becoming a country of two classes: the top 1% and everyone else. Similarly, we are two economies. The national one is comprised of items like GDP (Gross Domestic Product), corporate profits, stock market performance and CNBC. Then, there’s the other one in which most people live: stretching to afford health care, a mortgage, commuting costs, education, kids, parents, and the credit cards that act as temporary pain killers.

Almost all our media is controlled by just six corporations: Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, News Corp, Bertelsmann, and General Electric. Their holdings include the major TV networks, movie studios, book and magazine publishers, radio stations, cable channels, sports teams, theme parks and comic books. It appears that we’re being exposed to a wide range of ideas, when in fact certain opinions and facts will never be seen or heard, but by those few who aggressively search out alternative sources.

Early Morning Jokes for January 23 -- Tony Peyser - http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/peyser/742
There is talk of pumping $150 billion in tax cuts and government spending to head off a recession. Is that going to help much when we're spending a billion a week in Iraq and Afghanistan? President Bush is like a guy whose house is burning but instead of calling the fire department, he's planting succulents.
Mike Huckabee supporter Chuck Norris said John McCain is too old to be president. Should we really be taking political advice from the guy who starred in "Missing In Action," "Missing In Action II: The Beginning" and "Braddock: Missing In Action III?"
Chun Kuk Do is a hybrid martial art founded and first taught by Chuck Norris. Oddly enough, it has a 12-point Code Of Ethics and #6 is: "If I have nothing good to say about a person, I will say nothing." I guess this doesn't apply during an election year.
And finally: the percent of Army recruits with a high school diploma dropped last year, continuing a trend that has worsened since the start of the Iraq war. An army spokesman emphatically insisted, "I is not so sure that all the fact is right in this reports."

Barton’s proclaimed goal is to uncover “America's forgotten history and heroes, with an emphasis on the moral, religious, and constitutional foundation on which America was built,” but his real goal is to mobilize religious voters to support Republican candidates – which is, after all, what the RNC regularly pays him to do.

I want to say thanks to C&L for posting this. We NEED a light-hearted story sometimes. And yes, it was light-hearted - anyone taking offense to Obama's reply or anything else needs to chill or have a drink or something. Good natured ribbing, I've missed you.

On the issue of race in the campaign - I don't think the Clintons are trying to use racism to their advantage. I don't think Obama is using his race to his advantage. The only people I've heard making race an issue at all is the media and some Obama supporters (and I don't hold him responsible for what they say, although I think he should speak out against it (although I can see why he wouldn't)). If the media stopped pushing race down our throats it would cease to be such a big issue.

Also, a dance off? Obama's right to say "not right now, the adults are talking" since he's in the middle of a campaign, but after all that's done with I think it'd be kind of awesome. Something tells me they're both decent dancers, and it would help remind people that we (democrats, anyway) are all mostly shooting for the same thing. I think Obama supporters are hating the Clintons (on his behalf) much much more than Obama himself ever would, which is silly (same for Clinton supporters).

Ya, that's what important - that the president is a good dancer. I forgot that this race is turning into American Idol - thanks for reminding me. O btw, is Bill running or Hillary - because I see the same amount of both. They really don't want to give up the Bush/Clinton Dynasty - too bad.

This picture was hilarious (in a good way) and so was the article. I knew Bill could play the sax, but I had no idea he was such a fantastic dancer. I think the whole episode lightens up the campaign and brings a wonderful element of fun. I really love it when the candidates open up their sense of humor. Each one has made me laugh at one time or another (and I mean that in a good way).

Sure I would vote for Obama but Bill would clean
his clock in any debate. The Repugs are scared
of Bill. In fact he scares them more than any Democratic

I suspect the BO people want Bill Clinton banned from the campaign not because his behavior is "unpresidential" but because he's incredibly presidential and in comparison Barack Obama looks like a whiney cry baby.

Unfortunately, BO is running AGAINST Hillary Clinton, while she is running FOR President.

Bill campaigns more than his wife does. My understanding was that in the US you can only be President for two terms. That's it. Somebody please tell Bill. First of all, get your facts straight, Bozo. RONALD REAGAN de-regulated the corps and the media, not Clinton. Clinton turned all that around and then W removed all the constraints again. Bill Clinton was the first president to reign in the corporations since FDR, a president who is also roundly hated by Republicans.

This is why BO is trying to muzzle the Cintons. He has spread a bunch of BS about them and he doesn't want Bill out there setting the record straight.

That said, what is it with you BO people anyway? So what if all the past presidents in the country are out telling lies about your candidate? If they are lies they can be debunked, right? Every candidate in the race is facing accusations and criticism. The rest of them aren't whining to the public and the Party to "shut them up." That's the American political system. Why can't Barack Obama just succinctly tell us what the lies are and then tell the truth to the public? But he doesn't. He says he'll talk "off the record" not before the public, what's that all about?

And just for your filthy, whiney, juvenile information, Bill and Hillary Clinton were villified by all of the media and the opposition and even people in their own party and they stood up to it and held their own and did a great job leading this country. So, please spare us your angst that your stupid candidate was criticized.

Why is it that the BO people can't just watch the show and then choose a candidate? No, you have to be ranting and lecturing and dictating to every voter in the country and slandering every other candidate--just like Barack himself. It doesn't speak well of your camp. So why don't you go out and help BO file a formal complaint against the next state where he's going to lose. It'll give you something unuseful to do.

The best things about being married, he said, are spending your life with your best friend and having children.

"The best moment of my life, I think, was that I was in the hospital, in the room, with my wife when our daughter was born," Bill Clinton said.

So what? I still haven't heard one of you people come up with a logical, valid argument as to why Bill Clinton should not participate in this campaign to his heart's content, unless it's that you ARE AFRAID that Barack can't stand up to the competition. Bill Clinton is not doing anything illegal, or unethical, or unseemly. Barack Obama and Edwards (who, by the way, is NOT complaining about Bill Clinton's participation) knew going in the Hillary Clinton was running in this race and Bill Clinton would be campaigning for her.

If all the terrible things you accuse Bill Clinton of are true, then what's your worry? If he and Hillary are such terrible people, she won't be elected, right? Or did you think you're the only smart person in the world who has to DECIDE for all the rest of us who should be in the White House? Oh, I think I struck chord. I don't know about you, but I have a rather sound, thorough education in the social sciences and I can decide for myself. I suspect the rest of the electorate is at least as smart as you or anyone else in Barack's camp.

I believe that if BO were winning, we'd hear nothing from his campaign or his followers about Bill Clinton or any other detractor. Conclusion: GROW UP , ALREADY, OR LEAVE POLITICS ALONE.

Then you truly know nothing about politics if you don't think everything the US does influences the world. Your post responses do not make sense. You sound more like a Clinton paid employee, than a blogger. Please do some reading and educate yourself. That isn't trying to be an insult, either. You sound very politically uneducated. Enlighten yourself.

Again I say, so what if he's lying? Or if you believe he's lying? So what? You say he's the worst person in the world anyway, that lying is his stock and trade, that everybody knows that, so why are you worried that you think he's lying about Barack Obama? Again, lies can be easily dispelled by the truth, but we still don't hear that from the Boy Wonder.

And if you're from Canada, I don't see where any of this is really any of your business anyway.

thats right lieings bills bread and butter , and it runs in the familly , hillarys learned from the horn dog very well, and accuseing everyone who thinks clintons a numb nuts of being an orilley fans just bullshit and you use it plenty!

You have me confused with someone else on this thread. I did not say one word about Bill O'Reilly because I can't stand the man and don't pay any attention to him.

well then start useing obamas name instead of bo, wich is useualy the short for orilley, im an edwards or kucinich supporter and think obama and clinton are just more corporation moochers ,weve had enough of that kind of politician no more clintons or loosers like her and obama!

Looks like Clinton's trying to hang on to that "Honorary Negro" Card Toni Morrison gave him.

And she should apologize for giving it to him before consulting with the rest of us African-Americans to determine if he deserved it or not.

White men can't dance.

WTF have we come to where we have to play out these games of cultural difference and shared experience? What if Obama can't dance (judging by Ellen's show, I know he can, sort of)- would he get my vote?

But I can't dance, I can't talk.
The only thing about me is the way I walk.
I can't dance, I can't sing

barack OBAMBI ITS A PLOY YOU MORON..... WE THE CLINTONS SUPPORTERS ARE KEEPING YOU FROM GIVING " INSPIRATIONAL SPEECHES ".
NOW EVERY VOTERS SEE THAT YOU ARE JUST A junior SENATOR TRYING TO IMPRESS THE GIRLS.
YOU'RE RUNNING FOR THE MOST POWERFUL NUCLEAR SUPER POWER IN THE WORLD AND YOU WANT TO CHALLENGE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN HUSBAND TO A DANCE.
WAY TO TO GO junior SENATOR FROM KENYA.

NEWS FLASH ....... The LA TIMES is reporting that the junior senator barack obama said he PUSHED THE WRONG BUTTON 6 TIMES in the senate chambers while he was trying to vote on some legislations.

AND THIS IS THE GUY WE WANT TO TRUST WITH THE MILITARY AND OUR NUCLEAR BOMBS.

Please stop yelling. Your caps are stuck on. Hillary is a Junior Senator as well. What's your point? She votes and sides with Republicans on almost all bills. What's your point? Why are you people so scared of Obama? Vote Edwards. Done. No Obama, or Mrs. Bill.

Sorry to burst some of your bubbles.

I'm an independent that voted for Gore and Kerry and loved the Clinton administration. BUT.

You need to look at back ground of these candidates. Bush's grand father was Hitlers bank.

AND Bill Clinton was G H W Bush's cocaine boy in Arkansas.

I could Bash Bush and Co. all day but we need to make sure the right person gets into office.
Thank you.

Obama released a statement this afternoon saying that he was far too busy to dance, and besides “it wouldn’t be fair to take advantage of an old man.”

DK on the floor of the house yesterday.
“If impeachment is off the table,” Mr. Kucinich said, “truth is off the table. If truth is off the table then this body is living a lie.”

Thanks for this. We have to understand that whoever gets elected will not be a result of the discussions we are currently having. People need to organize to get others to write letters to congressmen, campaign, email media, and keep pushing for impeachment.

It's not right to let Cheney, or this entire administration walk away.

Yikes, another round of the apology tango.

“Obama released a statement this afternoon saying that he was far too busy to dance…”

But he does a mean FISA two-step.

StCyrlyMe2 @ 25:

I think Obama is right to not engage with anything President Clinton is trying to engage in him at this point. It's all frugal and staged.

He needs to stay on message and come out blasting when his message is lied about and distorted. He is currently doing a very good job of putting team Clinton on the ropes and gaining support from all walks because of his positive message and clear ability to bring people together.

He is going to always faced with the hate mongers on both sides of the political system and from all walks of life, but he is starting to get real good at firing back when he needs to and thats what counts.

Stay on message? Oh you mean like whispering "bill and hillary are racists" via his STAFF?

You mean like making racial mockings like "D-Punjab"?

You mean that D-Punjab, is different from D-Farrakhan's Ghetto?!?

You mean trumping up race, and causing this division among Democrats is UNITING?

so the republicans are not running against hillary but are running against bill clinton! the guy who gave us nafta , and opened the way for cafta and every damned trade deal where weve been takeing it up the hump on, he allso got the news corporations deregulated where just a few repigs were able to own all the news ,you know ,the assholes from cnn msnbc msm all the fachist bastards who lie every day to the american public ! whos good enough friends with the bushes to go golfing with poppy bush and gets invited on picknics with bush and his darling sweet , wife babs , yeah bills the man ! i can still hear that giant sucking sound ross perot talked about ,you know the one where he said if clinton got nafta passed that our jobs will be sent to china , jesus wise up , we were had by the horn dog!!!!!!!!!

He has spread a bunch of BS about them and he doesn't want Bill out there setting the record straight.

.

Bill doesn't set records straight. He lies. It's what he does. He's been caught lying repeatedly. He lost his license for lying. He had to make deals to hang onto his presidency for crying out loud. Face it, the man is a liar.

What has he lied about?

Edwards/Obama or
Obama/Edwards?
Fuck Hillary and Bill Clinton right in the ear! (Sure, use a cigar)
We need a different family in the White House, hell I'd vote for Larry Flint and Gary Coleman if they were running. And the whole faith in Jebus thing makes me want to hurl. I don't want to hear anything about X-tianity and fairy tales and radiant sunshine smiles, I want to hear rather about how the executive will get something accomplished that doesn't include war, greed and wiretapping?

Wake me when it's over, the only reason I would support Hillarity would be to possibly avoid (because she might be able to beat Huckleberry; Hell, she might as well run on the McLame ticket) yet another "conservative" (stone aged, good'ole stale-wart, corporate interest, god-fearing, dingle-boy) asshat being nominated for the Supreme Court.

I may witness the end of an empire? What?

bilhelm-X @ 61:

I want a change too and for the first time ever I hope Hillary's actual "glass ceiling" is the White House; not to be rude dear but your 15 minutes has been far too extended to perhaps 45 minutes, thanks! But we hope to have some lovely departing gifts for you, UPOP! Of course the first words are "Useless Piece of" and the last word is not Pineapple, nor is it Protagonist! No misogyny intended, I just don't want some wife of a wash-up turkey neck-lookin' bitch in charge of the nation immediately after George W. Retard! Do YOU?????? Sorry Clintons, one time was enough, how about [deleted--not on this site], m-Kay?

Toodles,

I'd rather have 2 competents in the white house, than a dividing, racist baiter any day.

Obama - D-Punjab, haha funny, huh obama...there's not that many indian-american voters, so it's a-ok.

Hillary calculating and ambitious, yet Obama publishes his memoirs at age 33 to head off accusations of drug use for his political campaigns?

Obama raising more money, from major contributors, and corporate donors? Obama's identical voting record to Hillary's?

NO OBAMA.

I'm tired of the lie that obama praised reagan's ideas. He correctly cited reagan's transformative power, which democrats have lacked- even Clinton, who if anything, partially appropriated Reagan's ideas, i.e. welfare reform and criminal justice.

How is it even in question that the republican party was the party of ideas in the 80s, 90s, and even today? They're the ones who have shifted the discourse in conservative directions, and the democrats have moved towards their positions. They've been more effective politicians! This is indisputable. Obama was saying that the left needs their own ideas to change the debate.

Clinton's totally, totally wrong on this one. She's doing what the republicans do: distort. Bill Clinton mis-characterizes Obama's positions.

She's destroying her candidacy. She may win the nomination- but this behavior will totally demoralize people who support Obama- who correctly feel that her lack of integrity amounts to spitting in their faces. I for one will be completely disgusted if she keeps this up, and will devote about 1/100th of the energy and money I would have if she had won an honorable campaign.

EDWARDS!

"take advantage of an old man" Doesn't sound like senatorial (or prospective presidential) language to me. Admit it, Barack, you just can't keep up with the BIG DOG!

Kat, nobody can tell anywhere in the world that it isn't Bill Clinton that Obama and Edwards are up against. Hell, the American public probably can't tell the difference. Bill campaigns more than his wife does. My understanding was that in the US you can only be President for two terms. That's it. Somebody please tell Bill. He seems to be on a roll thinking he'll be back in the Oral Office in no time.

Brarack Obama's biggest mistake is taking on Bill Clinton oin a one-to-one level. Obama is giving Bill Clinton more power by addressing him directly - and he seems to forget that Bill is a cultural icon. Bill wanted that though, to take Obama's focus away from Hillary to disarm his "Hope/Change/Unity" postioning. And Obama fell bait and hook for it because Bill & Clinton camp KNEW that Obama's ego was far more delicate. Now his Hope/Change charade has fallen. Obama may think that the defensive strategy is working, but it isn't.

Everything was going fine UNTIL the moment that Obama's camp distored Hillary's comment about MLK and LBJ. Then when the Clinton camp decided to respond to that with the Reagan inference. Bill came out, Obama's people came out. The mistake was that Obama took it upon himself to respond to Bill personally, when it should have been handled through his surrogates.

Hillary did very well to stay out of SC for a few days, giving more leverage towards Edwards AGAINST OBAMA for the Dem convention. Notice how now suddenly Edwards is getting more attention, more airtime, more press? She had to move out of the way in order to give Edwards more of the spotlight. I smell a Clinton/Edwards ticket or vice versa.

From what I see and read on various blogs and online watering holes, what the Clinton's are succeeding at is alienating Dem supporters because of their Republican-like campaign strategies. If I was a Hillary supporter (and there seem to be many of them) I would be damn worried right now. Sure, maybe she'll be the Dem candidate, but at what cost to the party? Is it worth it to take that stroll down memory lane?
