Cheney gets his stump on for the Telecoms that broke the law and helped BushCo implement the warrantless wiretapping program.
Cheney:...for those who assist the government in tracking terrorists should not be punished with lawsuits. We're asking Congress to update FISA and especially to extend this protection to communications providers alleged to have given such assistance anytime after Sept., 11th 2001. This is an important consideration because some providers are facing dozens of lawsuits right now. Why? Because they are believed to have aided the US government in the effort to intercept international communications about al-Qaeda related individuals.
One might even suppose that without liability protection for past activities to aid the government the private sector might be extremely reluctant to comply from future requests from the government. That risk is unacceptable to the President. It should be unacceptable to the US Congress. (There's a lot more to transcribe.)
You knew there had to be a Rudy in there someplace. And the President is angry too...Oh, the poor babies. Cheney tries to scare the private sector into believing that any future lawbreaking may be prosecuted as well. Here's a clue---it will. They have the resources to do things efficiently and legally. There is also this report that the telecoms actually started this program before 9/11 which undermines their terror claims.
Former chief executive Joseph P. Nacchio, convicted in April of 19 counts of insider trading, said the NSA approached Qwest more than six months before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to court documents unsealed in Denver this week. Details about the alleged NSA program have been redacted from the documents, but Nacchio's lawyer said last year that the NSA had approached the company about participating in a warrantless surveillance program to gather information about Americans' phone records.
With their multimillion dollar lawyers on hand, Cheney is afraid that they may have to do a little work for their clients. Why did Qwest decline the WH invitation anyway? Sorry Charlie. This bird don't fly.

buh bye Dick.........go f#*! yourself.
He doesn't look well...
...I mean more than usual.
mudshark @ 1:
Who says he's going anywhere? That evil buttwipe has been in government for decades and he STILL gets back over and over. Would not surprise me one bit if the next government whether they are Dem or Rep, will have him on the payroll in some capacity. For some reason politicians from both parties love this guy. I don't get it.
Dick comes out of the cave and the dems go running.
He's not a bear. He's an evil asshole. Tell him to eff off. Don't cower. Stupendous cowardice barely disguised as some sort of triangulation.
If Cheney is in favor of it, you know it has to be bad for the country.
Here we go again:
Dick says, "We’re asking Congress to update FISA and especially to extend this protection to communications providers alleged to have given such assistance anytime after Sept., 11th 2001."
They either did or they didn't. If they didn't, there is no need for immunity. Can we drop the alleged now???
Those poor Telecoms.... I'm glad SOMEONE is standing up for them.
Jesus, what is Cheney's aproval rating, like 10%? Why pull this guy out of the mothballs? Surely they're not feeling THAT threatened?
It's becoming increasingly clear that the only audiences the chimp and "Dick" will stand in front of our the Heritage Foundation, AEI and anybody in uniform.
Sadly, it's no surprise that their current interest is in covering the asses of lawbreakers. Just looking to the future I 'spose.
Too bad Reid is going to cower, piss himself, roll over and give this to 'em without even getting a reacharound...
"One might even suppose that without liability protection for past activities to aid the government the private sector might be extremely reluctant to comply from future requests from the government. That risk is unacceptable to the President."
That particular comment is scary as Hell. Especially the part about "future request from the Government". This is how Dictatorships start and everyone who supports this sort of continuing civil liberties infringement by the Government deserves to live under a Dictator's boot. I for one, do not intend to be one of those people. I hope the private sector faces law suits up the butt for helping this Administration in its criminal acts. There is no security threat dire enough to give up your civil liberties for.
so lets see, 6 months before 9-11, that means the program worked real well at "intercept(ing) international communications about al-Qaeda related individuals."
If I stood up in a meeting at work and spewed un-defendable bullshit I would have my head taken off for the fun of it. why is it the higher up you go the more crackers you can be?

Those who assist the government with wrong doing and conspire with criminal members of the administration to strip us of our Constitutional Rights should never have to worry about frivolous lawsuits. We are bullying and blackmailing Congress into not only taking impeachment off the table but also into making it impossible to gain any redress of grievence for the laws we have violated and ignored either alone or in conspiracy with others. We allege they assisted us since September 11, 2001 even though we came into governent with wiretaping and blackmail in mind. The proof is in our continued success at not being prosecuted or impeached.
One might suppose that without evidence of embarassing sexual liasons, bribe taking and other crimes that we have on almost everybody in Congress the private sector might be extremely reluctant to comply from future illegal requests from the government. That risk is unacceptable to the President. We have made damned unacceptable to the US Congress.
Go fuck yourself, Mr. Cheney.
navyswan @ 6:
exactly, if its "alleged", why the fuss? you would think they would be spending their time proving that it is nothing more than a false allegation.
Oh, Cheney, isn't he the vice president? Did he pop up out of his hole, must have, since it is so close to Groundhog Day.
Senator Dodd has promised to filibuster this bill. It's good to know that there are still some people in Washington who will stand up for the American people. Pelosi???? yeah right :(
If a known liar tells you something is a lie....... http://thinkprogress.org/2008/01/23/perino-cpi/
He can only say that crap in front of The Heritage Foundation. Where's Rush?
"This is an important consideration because some providers are facing dozens of lawsuits right now. Why?" Because they were breaking the law, and the only way to save their asses and your asses it to rewrite the law to make what they were doing retroactively legal. And since bringing these cases to court will probably show that you were doing it before "everything changed" on 9/11, and that the Clinton administration was doing it too...you won't have a leg to stand on.
Mr. Dick, may your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
The day that this man falls over dead by whatever means will be a a great day for this nation.
Well....Cheney could use part of his half of Wyoming as a server farm (powered by Nuclear energy - there's no open spaces or sun in Wyoming for solar or solar thermal ;) ) and outsource it to AT&T & Verizon....
Or they could just take a wing at new world Halliburton (Dubai Headquarters)....and donate part of his stock options (up 3000% not bad eh?) toward that....they could call it...Cheney Wing....(kind of rings with his caged pheasant hunting skill & cunning)
Dear America:
The world would like to ask you a huge favour. Would you please take this evil man hunting or something? Is there not some retirement home somewhere that can take him, and let him play with toy soldiers all day and night? Your friends and allies really despise this evil, corrupt, warmongering man who has brought nothing but shame and embarrassment to your nation. Why have you put up with it? Do all opposing politicians down there owe him money? Favours? Please do the right thing and put him to sleep. It will save many, many lives.
Signed,
Your friend

Joe O. @ 9:
Hey, Dick:
The same would hold true for any "President" who decided to conspire with industry to commit a high crime or misdemeanor.
Immunity is unconstitutional. Pardons and commutations are not.
On with the trials.
It is the failure to investigate properly the assassinations of the 1960s , Watergate and Iran-Contra that has given us guys like Cheney. He is our V.P. because there has been no accounting and no accountability.
but remember this asshole has access to anthrax!!!!!!even sings about it!!!!!!!!!!!!
"...had to be a Rudy in there..." I'm assuming that the word "Rudy" is meant as in referencing 9/11.
Do we really want to associate 9/11 with Rudy (despite his best efforts)? Come on. Its not like associating frothy sperm, lube and shit with Rick Santorum.
The sad thing is, he'll probably get just what he wants.....again.
OT: Ariana Huffington, proving She never really got over Ken Starr, sends her henchman Marc Cooper (who called Paul Krugman "vermin" on his blog the other day) to go after Clinton's dick.
It may just mean Clinton's numbers are holding and it's time for the unprinicpled HP to go long. Still, sad in a way.
Forget making snarky comments here about Cheney...
you want to put one up his butt and Bush's as well? Then call your Senators and tell them:
1. You want them to support Dodd's filibuster.
2. Telecom immunity has nothing to do with national security.
3. If they don't take action and vote responsibly... you will not vote for them or contribute to their campaign ever again.
4. Call Reid and Durban and tell them to stop acting like Republicans!
Contact your Senators Here:

What this really is about, if you haven't figured it out yet is amnesty for Bush and Cheney.
Sad thing is . . . he'll get it. These are your Dem leaders in action! Who knew they were Republican?
Good... From Durbin....
Dear Mr. Smith:
Thank you for contacting me about amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and the Protect America Act. I appreciate hearing from you and share your concerns.
I am deeply concerned about the manner in which the Executive Branch has initiated and conducted the NSA surveillance programs. I continue to believe that companies that participated in unlawful surveillance should not receive retroactive immunity. When the President and his Administration order actions such as the surveillance of American citizens, these actions must be conducted in a manner consistent with the rule of law and the Constitution's commitment to civil liberties.
I also will continue to support measures that shed light on any illegal actions that were taken in furtherance of the NSA program.
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator
Um, why would they worry in the future, if it was a legal request?
All they have to do is point at a court warrant, which can be procured and signed retroactively up tp 24 hours after the assistance was first rendered, and they are in the clear, and no lawsuit can take them,
or am I misunderstanding US law?
Of course, if they do get that pesky warrant.
bluegal @ 18:
Every time I see the Hitler Foundationlogo on the wall I cringe because I know that the scat piles will be really big. Gotta watch your step when you see that logo.
935 lies? Is this 936? The fact that they started this before 9/11 makes it glaringly obvious. Whatever the dems are being blackmailed for couldn't be worse than what bush and cheney have done to this country.
Just dropped this on her website.
Dear Senator Clinton,
In light of the almost relentless attacks on our personal freedoms by the Bush Administration, and your oft stated desire to preserve liberty and restore faith in our Constitution, I am sure that I can expect your support in not granting immunity from prosecution to the telecomm industry over recently discovered facts related to potential violations of FISA.
The most important right for all Americans is the right to be left alone, and to not live in fear of their own government. The abuses brought by this Administration under the premise of fighting the "war on terror", are without parallel in history, and in direct violation of the intent of the Founders.
The FISA law was set up to protect Americans, to prosecute criminals, all while ensuring justice and liberty for all. It's bastardization and potentially outright disregard by this Administration is unparalleled in history.
Any vote which undermines the right of the people to investigate and discover the sources of this illegal activity, reveals the individual that casts that vote as at best unaware of their primary role in government and at worst as aiding and abetting those that would undermine our liberty.
Our laws are not political tools to be used to score political points over political opponents. Our laws are designed to serve EVERYONE. That is the promise of America.
Thank you.
The intelligence community doesn't have the facilities to gather intellidence?
And why is that Dicky boy?
gawd he makes my skin crawl
You know what's the right way to prevent another 9-11 along the road?
PAYING ATTENTION to the intelligence that was on your desk prior to 9-11!
I need to take a shower, my ears are full of slime now
What's his approval rating now?Are we in negative numbers yet?
It comes down to, 'trust us, we're the government.'
Richard Speck has more credibility than Richard 'Bullseye' Cheney.
You and George broke the law. Corporate amnesty should not be a part of a foreign surveillance law. How would you feel if Iran or China did something and then shielded a company in the same manner? You'd be bitching up a storm.
I thought Jabba the Hut was sensitive to daylight.
I used this free sevice to turn email into a fax to contact my Senators. I figured a paper flood is even better than an email flood! Please email, call, fax and write! If we speak as loudly as we did last time maybe we can get them to at least put the vote off again.

Oh, I'd love to drive a stake through Cheney's heart after he leaves office. Cut the head off, stuff some garlic in that sneering mouth of his, burn the pieces and scatter the ashes.
Otherwise, he'll just come back, like every undead evil creature does in the movies.
(And for you NSA pukes spying on all of us, vampires aren't real, and I'm not making an actual or credible threat against the VP. Grow up and get your heads out of your arses.)
IMPEACH CHENEY NOW
This fucker is repulsive! He's completely void of morals. What a LOSER!!!
I wonder if he wants immunity for Amdocs and Comverse Infosys the Israeli telecommunications companies that were spying on us for Mossad before our own Government started spying on us.
"Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course."
Lee Iacocca
Without immunity, Shooter and President Braindead have broken the law...they NEED immuinity to cover their own asses.
This is yet another smoking gun for impeachment
Waiting for Reid and Pelosi to fold and give it to them in 3, 2, 1...

After Germany invaded Poland, but before the US joined WW2, FDR asked the CEO of Standard Oil (great-grandfather of Exxon-Mobil) to STOP SELLING OIL TO THE NAZIS.
CEO of Standard Oil said, "You want us to continue to supply the US, or not?" (ie, "Shut Up! and be happy we sell *you* oil.") and went on selling oil to the Nazis.
Isn't asking for Immunity akin to admitting guilt?
This guy is such a sick joke to anyone with their eyes open, I guess thats why he only speaks at the Heritage Foundation where they all have their heads up their asses.

Avoid excessive long links please.
911 was the best thing that ever happened to the GOP. All shit they always wanted to do, and have a history of doing, wiretaps, eavesdropping, undermining civil liberties, shredding the constitution and turning America into a big brother fascist state they can do even more so now with terrorist and 911 as an excuse.
Same ole tired Republican fear tactics. Be afraid of terrorist, of brown people, of gay marriage, of non-Christians!
In other words be conned and scared into voting for the interest of the Republican elite and against your own. Still works for a good portion of the country and the 29% that still support Bush. Hey, and if we scare you enough you might not even pay attention to the pending recession and endless wars we are presiding over.
He's trying to head off another avenue of investigation, civil suits, which will be costly to the telcoms and will reveal the level internal spying on rivals and political dissidents that they were doing pre-9/11.
L.A. Confidential @ 48:
Iacocca's book is a decent read. I don't necessarily agree with ALL of his points, but he's right about the 'leadership' this country has.
Why is he giving the speech to the Heritage foundation? They are his choir but, he knows that (THE EXTREME RIGHT WING MEDIA) will pick it up and carry the ball for him. They wouldn't be able to do this crap if it wasn't for the media.
Give him a hood and you have the emperor. This immunity is more about protecting bush/cheney than anything else. They are not letting go of this. Without this immunity bush goes down for multiple felonies. The telecoms are too powerful, and will dime out the petty criminals in a heartbeat. Same blackmail Libby used. Don't be misled into thinking this is cheney being loyal to some cronies, this is desperate people trying to avoid jail and ruin.
Dick says that providers are facing dozens of lawsuits for helping his government. The logical thought is that if they did do anything wrong, then they shouldn't have anything to worry about!
Sorry typo should be
didn't do anything wrong
Ruthless People @ 55:
Gee Ruthless, It almost sounds like a cabal of evil repugs could be capable of CONCEIVING and act such as 9/11 as though intent upon setting in motion a series of events to stand our Constitution on its head. Naaaah, nobody's that evil. Besides, we pursued and cut off the head of the government which was native to the hijackers.......didn't we?
Cheney lied to us when the illegal surveillancing was going on. Since people who lie don't all of a sudden stop lying, we can assume that this statement is also a lie. The government does NOT need to surveillance American citizens within our borders without going through a FISA court in order to protect us. We DO need to stand up to this outlaw administration, and hold them and their corporations accountable to our laws.
The whole bunch of them should be tried and hung from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for the entire world to see.

how to aim. maybe bush and cheney and all the bushco administration
can have a circle shoot.
I’m glad that the Democratically controlled Congress had enough discipline to not bring our country down with impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney like the Republicans did with Clinton. But once the dust settles after the election, I hope criminal charges against both of them are placed high of the list of their agenda!

Senator Dodd needs to be installed as the new Majority leader immediately if not sooner, and Harry Reid should be recalled and convicted of treason . When this DOESN"T happen, people need to take a long hard look at the voting records of all the present DINO's who are sucking, I mean seeking re-election.
We need to tell Reichsmarshal Fuckwit and his gang of constitutional deconstructionists that we're mad as hell and won't take it anymore. I already e mailed Chris Dodd offering my support on the filibuster and urge everyone to do the same. Stand up, patriots, and be counted!
Cheney wants immunity for the telecoms because if they are guilty of wiretapping, then he (Cheney) is guilty of subornation.
Hmmm ... Don't I recall that subornation (of perjury) was an impeachable offense in the '90s?
Please memorize the following Cheney Rules of Unitary Executive Government:
Rule No. 1: "Those who assist the government in tracking terrorists should not be punished with lawsuits."
Rule No. 2: Those who out CIA agents should not be punished with lawsuits.
Rule No. 3: Those who destroy vice presidential records should not be punished with lawsuits.
Rule No. 4: Those who lie a nation into war should not be punished with impeachment.

Before there's anymore spying on the American people Dick needs to produce the missing white house e-mails. If you want to spy on us then we should be able to spy on you Dick.
When this bloated bastard finally passes the sun will shine more brightly on America.
You have to love the irony/hypocracy of the most secretive public figure in recent memory lecturing the rest of us about acquiescing our privacy in the name of national security. Wonder how he would truly feel about it if he wasn't using secure and encrypted phone lines?
I have notified turncoat Sen.Harry Reid ("Give Em Hell Harry", what a JOKE) and my Senator "Bend Over" Patrick Leahy that if they let this Telcom immunity go through, I will NOT vote for a Democrat for Pres in November.
Others should tell them the same. When the Dems actually work to protect our rights, then they deserve our vote. If not, then we should NOT vote for them. No matter the outcome. Let them suffer with us.
I cannot watch or listen to this slimy man anymore, so thanks for the text.
Now that we know this treasonous man is at it again, I have to know what he and Harry Reid agreed to.
Damn, why won't the Democrats investigate this man for impeachable offenses?
Don @ 75:
Actually, both warrantless wiretaps and the missing e-mails fall under federal law (FISA and PRA, respectively), and that has nothing to do with quid-pro-quo spying.
Cheney and his pals broke the law in conducting illegal surveillance. Traitor Harry and Spineless Nancy are leading the charge to absolve them of their crimes, when they should be impeaching the bastards.
Throughout, the Bush Administration has been unable to prove that there is an organized and vast network of terrorists plotting to kill more Americans (and, in fact, if such were true, it would mean 'we're fighting 'em there so we don't have to fight 'em here' is total b.s.). We have idiots turning in their training videos for duplication at fricking Circuit City, morons who have to be coached through 'loyalty oaths' by undercover agents, or who seek to trade stereo equipment for guns. We have men like Jose Padilla - accused of a dirty bomb plot, then put on trial with two other men in an unrelated case.
In the years to come, we will doubtless find more corruption, replete with Bush and Cheney's stink, defining the shell game that has been sold as the War on Terror. Our ports, railways, roads, and airways are still underdefended - with the port management being sold off to our 'friends' in Dubai. (Anyone remember how our 'friends' in Yemen let the guy behind the bombing of the USS Cole DIG his way out of basement security cell?)
"Mr Vive-President, your pants are on fire !"
-Jon Stewart-
You libs are going to get us all killed! Bush said we need to spy on Americans in order to prevent another 9/11 attack which was obviously a plot by Al Gore and environmentalists to cut down air travel. If the telecom companies don't have immunity then trees will be cut down to make paper for the lawsuits. Without all those trees for the hippies to hug they'll become enraged and fly another plane into a building. You Democrats just don't understand because like my god Rush said, the Republican party is the party of ideas and this is just one idea that is true, just like the trillion dollars of tax cuts for the rich trickled down and solved this mortgage crisis and propelled the stock market over 20,000 points.
How many lies can Cheney fit into one statement?
This sociopath really puts the "Vice" in Vice President.
I pity American citizens that would agree to give up their privacy with no fight.
As a betting man, 1000 to 1 odds on the corps getting immunity or equiv. After all this is the USA.
"The war on Iraq has been great for my company, KBR, and their books. It's been great for pirates, looters, and thieves to plunder my vision of a private government with no oversight, no regulations, and no safety nets for the tax payers. he is void of any light ... he is the prince of darkness himself... pathetic and sad, lost and gone terribly wrong. He is a great threat to the US, probably more than terrorism, more than anything they could be blackmailing the democrats with!
This is a serious issue, a serious battle against a serious threat: Dick Cheney.
Bush/Cheney politics has caused a huge snake pit underneath the porous facade of US politics, probably the largest ever! The cancer seems to have grown in the last decade. Can it actually kill basic quality of life eventually?

What news from Mordor my lord, what does the eye command?
we don't need any of that to protect this country.. we need people who are serious about their job. They could have prevented 9/11 without any of that...
I don't think anything is gained by insulting public figures. However, in this case, I can't help myself. Dick Cheney is subhuman scum, filth in a twisted parody of human form, who should never have been allowed within a thousand miles of Washington, D.C.
Impeach Bush! Impeach Cheney! Impeach them now!
Liability protection, please don't fall for this argument too U.S. Congress.
The only way Dick Cheney can really help the next generation "be free, strong, and a secure nation" (his words) is to be big media investigated, censured by congress, impeached by congress, fined by the judicial system, and convicted of war crimes to be incarcerated for the rest of his heart ailment life.
With his advisement the U.S. invaded the wrong country, tortured the enemy (not exactly Geneva Convention compliance), killed innocent people (seems like he's got Sadaam beat in the genocide competition), disrupted and displaced several other millions of Iraq's people, turned world opinion against the U.S., help strengthen the enemy with Al Qaida forces in Iraq, and did not protect and defend U.S. Constitution by continuing to manipulate the media, congress, the people of the U.S.
How about the courage of John Nirenberg from Vermont? The man arrives to D.C. on foot from Vermont 1/24/08 to see Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and personally appeal for the impeachment of Crook and Liar Cheney only to be met by her aide Michael Technenberg (ironically the man is deaf) instead of an audience with Madam Speaker.
What a great country we are today! Maybe just maybe Nancy ("with the smiling face") after she found out he was not insane could have listened from a courageous man truly concerned who sacrificed health and finances to be successful in his undertaking for the actual really helping the next generation "be free, strong, and a secure nation."
It is unfortunate we are saddled with this jackass. I hope those who voted for Bush/Cheney are proud of themselves.
