This is exactly why things that should not need to be debated anymore continue to be debated. Because no matter how many facts you place in front of Republicans, no matter how many studies are done by bipartisan panels, no matter how many White House talking points you prove are lies, they remain intractable and hold on to their false memes and then keep adding to it.

Case in point: Mike Huckabee. When asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews if he could still justify going into Iraq on the basis of WMDs not yet found, the Huckster finds a way to insult one of our few remaining allies in the region:

Matthews: Well, do you believe that there was WMDs in Iraq that hasn’t been found that would have justified the war had we discovered it?

Huckabee: I think it’s more likely that the WMDs—that we know that he at one time had—he used weapons against the Kurds—good chance they went to Jordan. We don’t know where they are. But the point is there was every reason to believe that they were there at the time. And it wasn’t just the President or the Republicans who believed that and who acted upon it. It was the Democrats as well. I think for now for people to say, ‘well, we didn’t find them,’ no, that we didn’t. But the other side of that is we’re there. Let’s not make a situation worse by pulling out and leaving Iraq in a very unstable situation and having it erupt throughout the Middle East and giving al Qaida a base and really betraying the trust that many Iraqi peole have put in us because they have believed we would not abandon them and leave them to the slaughter that they would likely be subject to.

Argh. How many talking points did you count in that statement? You gotta love the defense of "But the Democrats!" too. Someone has been advised by Ari Fleischer. I'm just sayin'...

My question for this interview is why didn't Matthews trap him? I am guessing Huckabee had no idea that Jordan was an ally until Matthews told him that. Matthews should have asked (without giving Jordan's background): "Do you really think that the WMDs are in Jordan?" Then, depending on how Huckabee answered, he could ask him if he thought an ally of the United States would do that or, if he said it was a hypothetical, he could have asked Huckabee where he thought they were. I would bet a lot of money had Matthews asked if they were in Jordan (without the background), Huckabee would have said yes.

Why did Matthews not ask him to follow up on his "slaughter" comment and how could he allow him to use the "finish the job" talking point again? Who would do the slaughtering and who would they slaughter? What is the "job" and when will it be finished? Has anyone ever answered those questions?

The neocon line is that Saddam Hussein was building WMD's to kill Americans, yet when 130,000 Americans went marching into his country he decided that instead of using them and killing Americans with them, as were led to believe he would.. he instead decided that they should be shipped out the country? Saddam Hussein was evil enough to build WMD's, kill all these people, but hesitated to use these "existing" and "catastrophic" weapons in a time when they'd of been of the most use to him?

Compromise about the truth? Are you sure you want to go there?

The weapons inspectors were there and they found nothing of value. The US invaded and there were people who did nothing but search for those weapons that Rumsfeld said we knew were there and he said we knew where they were. Okay, it's been almost five years and none have been found. I'm guessing there were none. The only reason we have our heads up our asses is to help search for those weapons. We're just trying to help. They have about as much chance being hidden in our asses as being hidden in Jordan. :)

The military had to attack while the nation was completely defenseless. Years of sanctions, followed by daily bombing runs, followed by KNOWING there was no way Iraq could defend itself, all contributed to the Oil run. Get used to it. A Dem in the WhiteHouse will say the same thing for the next 8 years. It's true, but it will be hard on the nerves after a couple years.

Huck should have said that Saddam took the weapons to Iran for safe keeping. Then he could have said, that's why we have to invade Iran. Bush, et al, would have loved him for that.

Of course we all know the Huckupation of Iraq requires defending the illegal invasion and making BASELESS assertions , just as McCain spews out every time he brings up Iraq .

A . Instead of " do you believe " , Matthews should have asked ( if he were an honest & objective ) , WHERE IS YOUR PROOF? , that WMD's went to Jordan, which is obsurd , because Jordan is basically a police state , where they have imprisoned POETS for criticizing the Government and even have their intelligence partly funded with U.S. money and a huge CIA presents in the country . They don't even make that ridiculous assertion .

Not surprising nobody is challenging JOHN McCain's baseless claim that " nobody has complained about U.S. bases around the world " , it's a LIE .
You can start with Chalmers Johnson who's done extensive research on U.S. bases , the costs, the consequences and the goals of U.S. imperialism . But the obvious is the hundreds of thousands of people who have PROTESTED military bases In Okinawa (where civilians have been run over by U.S. military vehicles ), Germany , EVEN Iraq there has been HUGE protests over U.S. military bases i.e. occupation . John McCain is a LIAR and he knows he's lying .

These republicans don't give a damn about what the Iraqi people want, because the MAJORITY want the occupation to END and they want the over 25,000 Iraqis in U.S. prisons in Iraq released . McCain only cares about advancing the PNAC doctrine of expanding U.S. military in the middle east , taking control their resources and projecting U.S. militarism .

It was ok for Saddam to rape and murder his own people when he was our little darling. It was ok for Saddam and rape and murder his own people, just so long as he kept on attacking Iran for us. It was ok to keep arming Iraq to the teeth, until he invaded Kuwait, and then BP and Shell didn't quite like that.

If you're for interventionism, thats fine.. but why be selective, when are you going to write your congressman so that he can urge King George to invade Zimbabwe, Nigeria, China, Iran, Sudan, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia? If we're going to have a war for humanitarian purposes, then why don't you support going all out?

Maybe the terrorists would be "weaker" now if we had not invaded Iraq and killed a bunch of them.

Maybe they wouldn't had flocked to Iraq had we not invaded. You do realise that Al-Quaeda despised Saddam right? He allowed women in his cabinet, women to drive, and was far too secular for their tastes. The fact Bin Laden called Saddam an "American agent" says it all.

If we had not increased military spending at home and abroad then I am sure there would not have been any further terrorist attacks on our soil

How many people have been convicted from attempting to carry out terrorists attacks in the united states? We can probably count them on our fingers. Why is it that America has open borders, and no terrorist attacks, yet israel is a concrete blockade and can't stop terrorist attacks. Trust me, the patriot act, DoHS, have done nothing but infringe our civil liberties.

This kind of thinking is exactly why I'm no longer a republican.

As this former Chemical Corps troop has said time and again, we had almost complete control of Iraqi airspace and total observational capability from Near-Earth Orbit courtesy of spy satellites. No, repeat, NO facilities to construct those weapons (and you have to have very special construction equipment and materials to make them) were seen being built. No huge shipments of stainless steel, ceramics, etc. were ever found. Ever wonder why?

Partly because of this: the US still maintains the "NATO doctrine" on BC weapons: use them on US troops or our Allies and you will be tac-nuked! As in immediate upping the ante into the nuclear realm. Saddam was well aware of this. Our own government was aware that Saddam knew of this. And Saddam may have been a vicious bastard, but he wasn't a stupid vicious bastard. He got rid of his manufacturing ability a few years after the Gulf War. Period. End of message.

And there's something that a great many people just don't get: you can't cart that stuff around in milk bottles. It's just too deadly. The kind of vehicles, security, etc. you need to transport it would have raised all manner of alarms. Sent to Jordan? Like the Administration's apologists said were sent to Syria? (Which is it?) Yeah, right.

Trying to use this as a defense for invading a country that could do jack s**t to us was bogus then, and it's triply bogus now as no traces of those kinds of facilities were ever found. Huckabee needs to have his nose rubbed in this verbal manure the way any poorly trained puppy does when he craps on the rug.

We invaded based on the lie that Saddam still had WMDs. It's up to Bush and the 27% that still support him (that includes you) to prove the weapons exist. Weapons inspectors didn't find them. Our military didn't find them. You can no longer assert they were there.

No one denies Saddam was a bad man, a murderous man. But do you really think Iraq is better off now than it was then, now that hundreds of thousands have died, the Sunnis and Shiites have been forced out of each other's population centers, and the entire middle class has fled the country?

Your catch-all "terrorist" community is now much stronger, too, as hatred for the U.S. continues to boil over. How do you make more terrorists? Keep killing their innocent relatives (for an illustration you might understand, go watch a Rambo movie and see how he reacted; if you change the ethnicity of the person and make the outcome more realistic, you might understand how we keep creating more terrorists). They certainly aren't going to fight us in conventional war, as we outgun and outnumber them. Yeah, being a superpower has its drawbacks.

The legal stuff, alcohol, is killing me.

This is something I still don't understand: we were sold the war (well, not all of us bought it) based on Saddam's alleged possession of WMDs. One of our threats against him was that we might use WMDs. How do we get off claiming the moral high ground?

Maybe our friend "you guys are idiots" would care to answer that one.

Try northern Calif. around Mendicino...they permit growing pot so long as for
medical purposes/reasons and since alcohol is killing you, you may qualify for.

Ahhh Jesus Christ! Saddam and his fucking non-existant WMD's again...Christ on a pogo stick Matthews, can't you ever stop beating that dead horse??

I can't jump on Matthews for asking the question. He was following up on Huckster's "Easter Egg" comment from the debate.

Matthews: "You ah raised a rather cloying point I think with regard to WMD in Iraq. You said we didn't find it, that doesn't mean it wasn't there. Just like don't find all the Easter eggs. Well...

Cloying. A nice way to say bullshit.

And as far as not finding Easter Eggs. Well unless your head is full of shit you do eventually nose them.

When I was a kid, a long time ago, in a free world, we found all the eggs, because my dad was not going to let food go to waste.

Jordan, Huckabee probably will mistake it for being Michael Jordan.

Thankfully Huck won't be president. Just a funny dude making us laugh

LOL!!!

This is by far the most ridiculous 'substantiation' myth that the right wingnuts use on WMD.

Question: We have a 643 Billion budget for defense (more than twice the COMBINED amount of the next 10 countries behind us - China at $60/yr)...
We have the most extensive network of spy & imaging satellites in the world
We have the Mossad & CIA gathering intelligence

Ummmm....the only thing we have to show for it is....

The artist rendition of mobile weapons labs....thanks Powell...they looked so realistic....have we found those yet???

No pictures, no video, no evidence that WMD was in Iraq, CONFIRMATION BY WEAPONS INSPECTORS that there were no programs & in fact what was on hand was deteriorated pre-Gulf war munitions, etc....

Thanks. That was fun reading :)

As some people like slasher movies, one of my entertainments is to visit freeper land now and again for chuckles. (Of course I only do this with a browser that allows me to block all scripts.)

Went there just now to see if Looks like ... Idiot was parroting what was said there. Now I think LlYGI may came to C&L after getting laughed off the right-wing kool-aid blogs.

Almost feel sorry... almost.

We didn't find any WMD in Iraq because they were all moved to Jordan or Syria?

Uh, huh.

This is nothing more than a right-wing conspiracy theory. Using this reasoning, you might just as well insist that the moon is still made of green cheese and we just didn't bother to dig deep enough through all the dust and rocks to find it. Just serves to demonstrate that some people will cling to any idea no matter how half-baked or how preposterous in order to avoid admitting that they were wrong.

Guess what republicans? No, I didn't think there were any WMD's in Iraq before the invasion, no matter what came out of the White House. Why? Because the farce was so blatantly obvious to any intelligent person who doesn't blindly accept everything that is told them by those in power, especially when they are obvious liars.

And yes, we're there now and it's a royal fuck up and all and of course we need to find a way to deal with it. However, before doing that, what I really want is for everyone who supported the war to come out and say:

You were right all along, we were stupid or we misled you and you were smart enough to know better. We are the ones who fucked up and we're sorry it turned into shit. The blame is on us and we accept it wholeheartedly. I know we in no way deserve it, but can some of you intelligent people please help us dig our way out of our own mess and find a solution because god knows that without your guidance we are bound to fuck up even more. Once again, you rule, we are stupid asses, please forgive our giant gaping mistake.

If someone would come out and say that, the rest of the country could unite and work on solving this crisis. But as far as any modern day republican leader voluntarily accepting any blame whatsoever in a humble fasion? Don't hold your breath.

I think it’s more likely that the Imperial Japanese Navy—that we know that they at one time had—they used a fleet against Pearl Harbor—good chance they went to Korea.

Just one of those "lefty" sources regarding Iraq's non-existent WMD's. The CIA Duelfer Report for the ISG.
