How quickly Condi Rice forgets

Condi Rice wants Cuba to hold free and fair elections in Cuba.

''At this significant moment in Cuba's history,'' Rice said, ``we reaffirm our belief that the Cuban people have an inalienable right to participate in an open and comprehensive dialogue about their country's future, free of fear and repression, and to choose their leaders in democratic elections.''

I have no problem with that, but I guess she forgot that our Supreme Court stepped in and decided the 2000 election for the very free and fair people of America.

Typical neocon nonsense: democracy at any price, even against our own interests.

Pepper's picture

Give me a break. The US doesn't care about spreading democracy, especially when democracies in other countries want policies that Western investors object to. We'll see how much they care about democracy when the Cuban people chose something other than what Washington wants. Then what? How much does the US respect democracy in Venezuela, Bolivia, Haiti, etc? No one, outside of ignorant US nationalists and the international right wing falls for this nonsense.

Well, since WE don't have truly democratic elections here in the US, maybe we should move to Cuba in hopes that Bush's warmongering buddies don't try to interfere there and give them some Iraqi-style "democracy"...a vain hope.

Meanwhile, Rice and the rest should keep their mouths shut and their big noses out of other countries' affairs. The very presence of Bush and Cheney in the White House demonstrates how little our system is worth.

I say its about time we start cleaning up our own country and let the people of other countries worry about their details. I'm not against stepping in and stopping the genocide in Darfur, but when it comes to unpopular leaders like Saddam or electoral policies like in Cuba, I think those people can work it out or ask for help before we step in and make a mess of the situation. Damn.

Bah! I want to reaffirm that you can shut the hell up, and go play yer piano Condi, you worthless excuse for a human being...... I further want to reaffirm that I believe it would be a prudent move on the part of my nation and its sorry excuse for a government to leave Cuba the fuck alone for five frigging minutes and leave them in peace to figure out just what the hell they want to do for themselves by themselves for a change ...

That would be a refreshing change of pace from the last 45 fucking years or however long it's been of living with this cold war Cuba bad, Castro Baad, must restore Batista lovers to power bullshit, I have been living with my whole fucking life!!!! Hey, little Havana of Miami? It's fucking over and has been over since even before your granddaddies little bay of pigs fiasco.. You people ain't gonna get your plantations back, nor your banana groves nor your fucking casinos..Not none of it.. comprende? That shit is 50 years ago now... Get the fuck over it and build a life in this country... Or not! I don't fucking care either way anymore... Get on a goddamned cigar boat and speedboat your asses back to Havana instead, and start over back there again, if that's what makes ya happy...

But whatever you people do, ya might as well get it thru your head that Cuba, I guess-- if the last 50 years is any indication, likes its' little version of socialism and does not plan to change back to whatever form of Batista corruption it used to exist under to please your exiled asses this far down the line, just because 'you guys' don't like and never did like Fidel Castro... Not gonna happen.... Apparently not happening any more than my hope of seeing George W. Bush impeached.... Like Nancy says.. just not on the table hombres' tough breaks all around I guess......JD

Doublethink is a form of trained, willful intellectual blindness to contradictions in a belief system. Doublethink differs from ordinary hypocrisy in that the "doublethinking" person deliberately had to forget the contradiction between his two opposing beliefs — and then deliberately forget that he had forgotten the contradiction. He then had to forget the forgetting of the forgetting, and so on; this intentional forgetting, once begun, continues indefinitely. In the novel's notes, Orwell describes it as "controlled insanity".

In the case of workers at the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth, doublethink means being able to falsify public records, and then believe in the new history that they, themselves, had just written.

This is a paragraph from a letter sent me by a friend, Dave. His first visit there was in '04, this was his second trip. He got to be there when Fidel stepped down.

My address is 302 Amistad, and the street name itself has so many obvious and trite symbolic parallels that I won’t even go into them, allegorically or metaphorically. Now that I’ve said that however, I can tell you that virtually every one that you were thinking of is true in some sense whether it is intra-Cuban enslavement of individuals both physically and intellectually, or the mass confinement physically and economically as a result of geopolitical forces and embargo. This real Cuba I refer to, is hiding behind the wooden slats covering the windows of an ornate 1920’s Victorian brownstone with a corrogated steel roof and no running water. It is looking out the doors through metal bars, it is playing baseball on street-corners with a broomstick and a twist-off plastic bottle cap. It is chipped paint, brick streets, food shortages, pollution, and high infant mortality rates. It is a fascist low-grade police state with virtually no respect for anything that would resemble constitutional rights, and in many cases even basic human rights. Fuck what Michael Moore and Sean Penn think, this place sucks and both Castro and the US government policies are to blame as they feed off each other symbiotically. Ali needed Frazier, McEnroe needed Conners, Hugo and Ahmadinejad need George or the US in general, and Fidel and his Socialistas need the evil US as we demonize him. It's Orwellian a la both Animal Farm and 1984.

Still whining over the 2000 election after all these years.

We're whining over the 2004 elections. Keep up! Thanks for reminding us about the fixed 2000 election though. It gets hard to keep all the scandals straight.

If Kerry was the best the Dems had to offer, blame your own party for offering up such a loser.

If Cuba was a manufacturer of designer shoes she'd be singing a different tune.

Funny a war hero is a loser and a deserter is presumably a winner?

Only in America.

I wish someone would ask a politician why we have relations with Vietnam and China, but refuse to talk to Cuba. Hell, China ran over their own people with tanks and we actually had a war with Vietnam. Total hypocrisy!!! The native people of this land aren't getting their property back; the blacks aren't going to get their 40 acres and a mule and the Cuban exiles aren't ever going to get their plantations back. Talk about free elections, please; when has Cuba EVER had free elections. The courrupt and racist Batista was a-ok with the U.S. government.
