Dick Gregory apologizes to the first Black President
By scarce Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 5:50pm
Noted comedian and long time civil rights advocate Dick Gregory shook the house at last weekends' State of the Black Union. Gregory did so numerous times that afternoon, including this bit where he "apologizes" on behalf of all African Americans for "confusing" the first Black President on just who is and who is not Black. As with all brilliant satirists, Gregory spares no one, least of all those in attendance.

I didn't know Dick Gregory was still alive. How 'bout that.
I saw this live. It was almost too much for me. He had me lol'ing.
Ummm..... It takes more to Hear a whisper than a shout. I can hear You brother, just fine.
Satire? Sounded more like truth.
Gregory can be a weird guy but this routine was brilliant.
That's right!
Yeah. Hey yeah. Hey now! Yeah, yeah, yeah!
I posted this yesterday. it's beautiful down to earth folk wisdom. cause we all know, playing ain't real. I wonder what Toni Morrison thinks.
i have loved gregory since i was a kid
oh and speaking of clinton, its all over save the tears
today, john lewis switched his support to obama and dorgan came out for obama
she is done
Me too. Can't believe he's still alive.
Good thing, though. Just another great mind no longer in the public eye because the public has no use for minds (or at least the media that airs things has no use for them...not sure which).
Bit NOLA @ 10:
The public-at least here-craves Minds, both young and not so young. The media gives US none.
It is my hope that when Obama gets elected that all great mind of men of peace be able to come back to the states. Back in the 60's they tried to kick John Lennon out. He fought to stay in the states. Formerly known as Cat Stevens was barred to come to the states. I wonder what other great mind and men of peace have we barred from coming to the states. Plus all those scientist that left the country to do stem cell research where it was permitted. Yeah! many great mind been silence and squelch lately.
I was crying through my laughter--how can such indignities still happen? Haven't we moved beyond the 1970s yet? For crying out loud.
paranoia @ 12:
Sorry to burst your bubble, but 'Cat Stevens' is a radical Muslim now. He agreed with the fatwa issued against Salmon Rushdie. 'Peace Train' my ass.
Dick Gregory is one in a billion. God bless him.
To me, "black enough" refers to someone's capacity to identify with the black American's history in this country.
I think Obama is an elitist. I don't think he feels much of anything.
David Hawes @ 14:
If you had done any amount of research you would know that Cat Stevens never agreed with a fatwa issued against Salmon Rushdie. He pointed out that Muslim law does state that hersey is punishable by death. Stevens never condoned the fatwa. But go ahead and continue to fuel stereotypes. You sound like Glenn Beck

Bill Clinton was not the one who called himself the first black president, it was Toni Morrison in a New Yorker essay. Yes, Morrison now supports Obama, but Gregory should have gone after her for coining the phrase. Unless Morrison asked Clinton for permission to use the word in the article, I don't think Clinton can be held responsible for what a supporter (at the time) said. What about "Slick Willy?" Or any of the other nicknames Clinton was also not responsible. I think Gregory should know better.
Bill Clinton was not a black President. He was just another Skull and Bonesman from Yale.
ROFLMAO....watch the whole thing.....I'm crying!
NOBODY's ever done it like Dick Gregory. He sees things from a perspective that no one sees until he says it. He cuts to the quick. He slices through all the verbal bullshit and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS hits the nail on the proverbial head.
J>S> @ 17:
I think he was kinda for it before he was against it...but who cares.
debg @ 13:
No we haven't.
We still are taught to value one another by:
What we get paid,
What we own,
What we drive,
What we wear,
What we eat,
Where we live,
What school we attend,
Who we choose for friends,
Who we choose to fall in love with...
And the advertising/entertainment industry drives home the notion to every one of us everyday that we suck unless we fit in, and those who don't fit in are a threat to our very own ability at fitting in, or a threat to our safety...and that lesson is shown in every home that has a television. Not everybody learns the lesson...those who will not learn that lesson are "against" those who do.
This Lesson knows no Color Barriers, but promotes them...
This Lesson knows no Gender Barriers, but exploits them...
This Lesson knows no Cultural Barriers, but encourages them...
This Lesson knows no Economic Barriers, but maintains them...
This Lesson knows no Politcal Barriers, but shapes them...
This Lesson knows no Legal Barriers, but enforces them...
Some of us have learned The Lesson well..some of us right here on this blog, and we don't even realize it.
Thank you, thank you for this.
I saw Dick Gregory in the 60's when he was on a college tour.
So glad to hear him again today.
Hallelujah! Thank the universe for Dick Gregory!

[OK Salman Rushie and Cat Stevens are not the topic of this thread. Find an open thread to jihad on each other, okay? Sitemonitor]
Scooter @ 20:
Do a little research. Bill Clinton was never in Skull and Bones.
And for the record -and I'll gladly get off this kick- 'Cat Stevens' Now Yusaf Islam stated 'He(Rushdie) must be killed'.
Earl @ 28:
Never let those "pesky facts" get in the way of a good conspiracy...;-D
PFELD @ 22:
Its interesting to me how "in your face" and unapologetic these 60's radicals seem now in this time of watered down "satire" and gutless politics.I was checking out a thread the other day talking about Dylan's "Mr Jones" interview with the guy from Time magazine, and many people commented on what a jerk and an asshole Bob was for dressing this cat down.Whats missing from that document is the actual context and feeling of that time itself and the serious divisions that existed. The "Establishment" personified by "Mr Jones",heaped a hell of a lot of hatred and scorn and outright racism and bigotry on the counterculture, and its in this light that younger people should consider Dylan's basic rage and frustration. He wasn't alone either. Those times were extremely explosive. We could all learn something about passion and commitment from these folks.
Verdillac @ 30:
Or good news reporting, debating or commentating for a debate
Think about it, this was like an exact opposite of a republican convention, bizarro republican convention.
Singer Islam gets libel damages
The singer was barred entry to the US last September
Yusuf Islam, the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, has won substantial damages from two UK newspapers which falsely claimed he supported terrorism.
The Sun and Sunday Times also published apologies after they made the false allegations in two articles in October.
The papers had suggested US authorities had been right to refuse his entry into the country in September.
Mr Islam said the settlement cleared his good name, and the damages would help victims of the Asian tsunami.
He said that both newspapers have now acknowledged that he is not, and never has been, involved in or supported terrorism, and that he abhors all such activities.
Peace award
They also pointed out that Mr Islam was recently presented with the Man for Peace award by a group of Nobel Peace Laureates.
The harm done is often difficult to repair
Yusuf Islam
The singer also said the newspapers have undertaken not to repeat the false allegations and also agreed to pay his legal costs.
Mr Islam said he was "delighted by the settlement" which he said "helps vindicate my character and good name".
What else have the media been wrong about?

Back to Dick Gregory and his valid points!
Doesn't Dick Gregory make cookies too?
Now, this BSOTU even, is this the one that Hillary Clinton attended and spoke at and Obama snubbed? I saw no mention of that so I'm just asking.
I have loved Mr.Gregory since the 60s when I read "From the back of the bus".
pinkobait @ 31:
Jesus You couldn't be more right! talk about 'divisions' -People booed Bobby when He dared play an ELECTRIC GUITAR! GASP! HOORRORS!
Now if they would have been a white guy the diversity ground (can you say Sharpton) would have been out demanding his head, but eh, making fun of whitey its all good!!!
Earl @ 35:
No. The cookies are made by Amos N'Andy.
This guy looks awesome!
I saw him on TV. He reminds me of someone...
Joker @ 40:
Wally "Famous" Amos....I know his cookies welll.....mmm...cookies.
Joker @ 40:
No. Dick Gregory was married to Mrs. Fields. Duh.
chris @ 39:
I can't say, as a Whitey" that I've been pulled over for no good reason...but when I grew my hair, my car was checked for drugs.
Verdillac @ 42:
Yeah "Famous Amos." Good cookies. Dick Gregory has the health food products. I knew it was something to do with food.
Verdillac @ 44:
my poney-tail almost reaches My ass and living in Floriduh sure has it's ...uncomfortable moments.
I had the pleasure of meet ing Dick Gregory once. He told me he had a terribly ugly, ugly child. He said the reason his child was so ugly was because he had been born with eight feet.
"So I told him. I told him he better pick which two he liked the best."
"'Cause I ain't buying shoes for all of them!"
D @ 19:
Gregory specifically said it was black folk (I assume including Tony Morrison) who painted Clinton as the black president. Go watch the clip again.
Who knew c-span could be intentionally funny? Damn, that was hysterical. Dick Gregory should moderate any future debates between candidates, lets see how they think on their feet.
D @ 19:
Excuse me. Bill Clinton may not have come up with the phrase, but he sure, uh, pimped off of it a lot.
Mr. Gregory's been doin' it for decades... and he still is!
Thanks, C & L.
...
I like his passion, but there are some things he says that just makes me a bit uncomfortable and I don't agree with. But, I'm white, so what do I know. I never like to blame anyone else for my faults, for what happens to me, sometimes it is their fault, but what the heck am I to do. I think people find reasons for things that due to a lack of dissection and introspection, are not due to skin color or gender, but due to something else entirely. I am an overweight man, and sometimes I blame things on my weight, when in reality, it is because of other factors. Yeah, probably not making sense, but the blame whitey parts of the speech are agitating. Can we still call people crackers?
David Hawes @ 46:
try entering the 'states from Canada!
Sure, they'll let a gut through with a bloody knife, a bloody chainsaw and a story about being a Marine Sniper with 700 kills, belonging to Super Space Patrol, and expecting Air Force One to pick them up...

Tony from NYC @ 52:
Well, if you feel a bit uncomfortable Dick Greggor still has it in him.
I had a black boss who always dressed in a suit. He was driving his company van down Washington Blvd. south of Baltimore when he got a flat. Not very suprised, the road there is the pits. He was half a block from a gas station so he decided to limp down the street in his van to get the tire fixed. He was pulled over by a Police Officer who wanted to arrest him for destroying public property. In the cop's mind, apparently, driving on a rim was tantamount to taking a sledge hammer to a mailbox. His supervisor showed up and dropped the whole thing.
Verdillac @ 27:
Touchy Touchy! Did I not say "Back To Dick Gregory"?
Verdillac @ 53:
LOL Maybe the Fulton's 'looked at Him funny'?
Disclaimer: loves me some Dick Gregory...since back in the day
But...
Did he just say that if HE was president he'd treat people differently based on the color of their skin?
JasonS @ 57:
No, I think he implied that he wouldn't be polite about what's going on in this day and age.
JasonS @ 57:
He is in danger of being President?
Verdillac @ 53:
Our tax dollars at work. The reason everything Homeland Security does is a secret may well be because they aren't doing anything (except spying on Americans).
People. Dick's message is to make EVERYONE uncomfortable. And,judging by the responces, here He succeeded once again.
David Hawes @ 56:
Mr Depres lives across from me now at the Prison. It's funny really...My wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) was kicked out of the 'States for having a prescription of Pre-Natal vitamins with my address in CT on it...why did she have said prescription? because I wanted her to be with me while we worked on our plans to get married and have her emigrate to the 'states and live with me. We did everything on the square...we even made sure that she still had an active bank account, home address phone number, etc. The men in the White Shirts decided that because we were doing things by the book, that we we up to something illegal...this was before 9/11
So now, I live in Canada with my wife, daughter and very little else...no more $22/hr job for me...I live in The Maritimes now!
and that little shit was let across the border in 2005!
xoites defends Constitution @ 59:
Look out!
Save Mr Gregory!
There's an impending Presidency looming in the shadows, making its way towards him! Save Him!
:D
Verdillac @ 62:
$22 American ain't what it used to be.
Verdillac @ 62:
I used to live in CT. Perhaps Life just steered You to your logical place. I sure empathize. My wife and I were homeless for 2 years because of the corrupt 'Workman's Ripoff err Compensation'. Good Luck.
xoites defends Constitution @ 64:
It was, when it was...I had a good thing going for me...then I fell in love with a Canadian, so Customs and Immgration had to make an example of us...I wonder what would have happened if we weren't white?
Verdillac @ 63:
No kidding, that is a job i would not wish on anybody.
(Especially Bush.)
I will say one nice thing about borders.
Someday when i can think of one.
"Peanut, fix me some of that Dick Gregory"
-House Party
That's where I first heard his name.
From that point, I was a fan.
"Last time I was down South, I was in a restaurant and ordered some chicken, and these three cousins, you know the ones I mean, Klu, Kluck and Klan, come up and say "Boy, we’re givin’ you fair warnin’. Anything you do to that chicken, we’re gonna do to you." So I put down my knife and fork, and I picked up that chicken, and I kissed it."
-Dick Gregory
Bill Clinton, first African American president...until a black person got into the race. Talk about racism from this idiot.
xoites defends Constitution @ 47:
LMFAO!
You're a trip bro'.
David Hawes @ 65:
I used to be an Apprentice Electrician with IBEW Local 90
The Local IBEW up here was going to help me, but then suddenly backed out...something about a "Canadians First" policy...this coming from a Country that is screaming for skilled immigrants.
yes, I'm bitter...but I'm pursuing Citizenship at this very moment. I'll find something other than temp warehouse work!
xoites defends Constitution @ 67:
Honestly, I think Public service should have a Draft...anyone who wants to run for public office should be prevented from such...Make running the country like jury duty...two years of your life, and then done.
Verdillac @ 72:
Hmmm.So much for that 'International brotherhood' stuff.
xoites defends Constitution @ 68:
If Humans are so damn wonderful, we would have amalgamated our nations into One United Earth a long f'ng time ago!
David Hawes @ 74:
Indeed!
David Hawes @ 74:
The worst part is that I wouldn't have emigrated to Canada had the IBEW said "We won't help you"
Instead, they said "No Problem! Come on Up!" WooHoo! so this is what gatting F@%^ed feels like!
The worst part about what Dick Gregory says, is that it is still true, it is still felt to be true...and he's not alone.
Chris Rock touches on the same subject matter.
Count your blessings. Until you sleep under a bridge,a harth, home, family and a full belly might be taken for granted. I wish You a Good Night.
InLaw @ 16:
No other comment on this board sticks out as "clearly written by a white person", except this one. Clearly, you didn't understand anything you saw, if you bothered to watch it all. The point is, no matter how good you are at heart, you simply can not, under any circumstances, understand what it means to be black in America. It doesn't matter what your own personal definition of "black enough" is. I'm a black man, and it doesn't matter one fucking iota what "I" think it means to be "black enough." You are "black enough" when you hear that police siren, and know that you have done absolutely nothing wrong, and you still feel a little relief when they pass you by. You are "black enough" when a skinhead takes one look at you, and knows with a certainty that he hates you and everyone you love. It's not a matter of being a "good person", it's simply a matter of being....black.
David Hawes @ 79:
Well said.

I covered his refused entry for local news. When they took Cat off the plane in Bangor Maine, he was surrounded by security guards and airport cops, and they were all asking for his autograph, shaking his hand, and taking pictures with him. It was the funniest thing to see all these law enforcement guys honoring him, and making it clear by their actions, that they didn't believe in their orders. Sweet. He'll be back, when the idiot prince is sent back to Texas.
Phil B. Studge @ 83:
Yeah.Kinda like Clemmens stroking Congressmen before His sad day before The Court of Lying Liars.
Nothing is going to change even if Barack is made prez. Anymore than change would happen for women if Hillary became prez. Who it will change are the children. For a very little girl to see a woman can be prez would make the change. Same can be said for the very little black boy. They will grow up knowing it happens. Then there will be change.
David Hawes @ 84:
No. I was there. It looked more like the scene where the guards hand Dorothy the broom of the wicked witch.
Dick Gregory is one of the all time great comedians. In 1964, Gregory wrote his autobiography titled, N****r. It is a brilliant work which chronicles his life in pre civil rights America.
Ok. So Nobodies fawning over a Somebody. BTW I was born in Bangor. Lived in Maine first 8 years of my life. Moose are awesome creatures.
That's Saint Dick Gregory, son.
Blackula @ 80:
I agree with what you have said - except your assumption that I am white.
I find Obama to be lacking in compassion.
Rich people have a problem relating to poor people.
Example: "Obama, the nation's only black senator, disagreed with claims that President Bush is racist or that the federal government responded poorly to Katrina because many of its victims were black." (Associated Press - printed on Obama's website).
What horseshit.
Verdillac @ 30:
Nice try, but Obama drones do not seem to be interested in facts....they like fairy tales; yes, fairy tales, and they're on the verge of selecting the Dems' equivalent of George W. Bush.
David Hawes @ 88:
So you're saying the guards and cops are "nobodies"? In your world, are "somebodies" better than "nobodies"? How do you tell the difference? Is there a catalog or a guide of some sort. Can they intermarry? Are you a nobody?
Too bad you left Maine at 8; you might have grown up to be less worried about who's where on your nobody/somebody scale. It's kind of sad that you can't deal with the fact that people respect Cat Stevens for his work. He said some dumb stuff about Rushdie at the time of the fatwa. Then he changed his mind and said so. He learned. Try it, you might find it refreshing. Or you can just keep hating, and let all that crap bubble and burn in you gut. Your choice.
debg @ 13:
My youngest son got his intro to being black three summers ago when he started getting pulled over by the police while riding his bicycle. But hey, as a fourteen year old black teeneager, he was rapidly growing to be the most feared person in America, a black man.
Racism is alive and well in America and it shows itself most frequently in the daily insults that black people have to endure.
Why is it left to Dick Gregory and Bill Cosby to have to carry the load?
Remember Ms Dickerson that nice black lady writer rep for the old guard
who was talking about Obama not being black enough, and how
Jackson and Sharpton were going to "potty train" Obama?
Then she goes on Colbert's show and Colbert says that by her definition
he should become(get this)Obama's slave so that when Obama frees him,
would he then "be black enough" for her and her backers.
Why was it left to Colbert to call her out? Where were all the black "leaders"
on that stage? I know, it was all a strategy play and they were all supposed to
be cool...or some crap like that.
Blackula @ 80:
Thank you. This needs to be said over and over.
nochickenhawk @ 50:
So his strong black support for 16 years was based on Bill's pimping of the honorary title of "first black President", or just because black folks really liked him for 16 years?
I'm confused here, can an Obama drone help me out?
I guess after 7 years of being a liberal against the Shrub has made me assume too quickly that being a Progressive with a different viewpoint was "ok" because we embrace different opinions.
No longer..Now it's "You're only progressive if you agree with me" just as it's been "You're only conservative if you agree with me" for the past, LONG HORRIBLE 7 years.
Ideology? NOT PRESENT!
Two summers ago, one of my direct reports, a supervisor making $65K a year, told me he was going out to lunch to test drive a car at a nearby dealership.
He got back nearly an hour late to tell me that he was pulled over by a cop while test driving a brand new Chevy. He was not stopped for any traffic violation, but he was black and driving in a predominately white suburb of Chicago. The cop followed him while he drove back to the dealership.
The dealer lost the sale. My supervisor said that it was, in fact, a common occurrence.
gag em with a spoon!
Shared Humanity @ 93:
My brother was called a "fag" by police, who picked him up outside of a gay bar (he is straight, who was with his girlfriend); I've been pulled over after dropping off my GF in a black urban neighborhood because I was told by a black officer "there's only two reasons PEOPLE LIKE YOU come here".
There are poor white people who identify with poor black people everywhere, in America 2008. There is a hardship to life that meld poor whites and blacks together.
Racism still exists, but it exists two ways; it's not just a one-way street. If anything, it's a class war, not a race war.
Josh @ 91:
There are more rediculous things but Skull and Bones has to rank in the top five of stupid.
All the homo stuff, and conspiracy. The LyingRugs have their fundaMENTALists and we have

Tell it, like it is, brother Gregory!
Shared Humanity @ 95:
Could either of you explain why the statement "I think Obama is an elitist. I don't think he feels much of anything" could only come from a white person?
Ahh truth...preach it brother!
I used to love Dick, but in recent years, he's become an alarmist. I used to listen this show on Stevie Wonders' station in L.A. He had people worked-up about Y2k. He trumped that theory about U.S. presidents dying in office, if they were elected in a year that ended in zero, predicting demise for Bush. He was just so far out "there" on so many issues.
Shag @ 104:
Bush is still alive but this country's reputation is dead.
How many here have had that steering wheel moment. I Have.

Just a thought, if Senator Obama becomes President, he will be President for all America - black, white, brown, etc.... Mr. Gregory's comments, while humorous, speak to a very sad reality. Black Americans will expect Senator Obama to be a "black President" and not just a President. These comments actually made me quite sad. His comments that basically told white Americans to give up ever trying to understand black Americans because we can't be discriminated against sufficiently. I suppose I could say to Mr. Gregory that because he or his ancestors had never had to live in a concentration camp or been through the Halocaust that their no hope that he will ever understand what it is to be a Jew. If this is the sentiment in the black community, then we might as all give up and just start voting for our own racial/ethnic brethren regardless of their politics.
London Man @ 102:
So Inlaw is not white? You know this for a fact?
Was that Dick Gregory or Frederick Douglass?Awesome words with awesome teeth.
I loved it!
Ellen @ 110:
you're speaking for all black people now?
Shag @ 104:
you wouldn't know truth if it hit you in the face?
InLaw @ 16:
ditto!!
Remember the Gregory For president dollar bills?
I saw him as a high school student at CSU back in the 70's. My mom encouraged me to go. He was ranting, so eloquently, that college students were the "new N!&*" and that cigarette papers were harmful due to chemicals meant to keep the cigarette burning.
What a roll model for this low income white boy, or for this middle aged white man.
We so depend on "comedians" to tell us what is up.
Ellen @ 110:
Obama seems to work hard at letting the white citizenry of this country know that issues of race are 'off the table' although those issues are still very much present. The sentiment of some people of African descent in America is that this is NOT okay!
That seems to be okay with you, though.
Shag @ 104:
I didn't know Dick Gregory is responsible for all of the Y2K hyperbole. Oh' wait, he's not. Nevermind.
This guy is in the shiznit with trombones of foreign apple juice! I really hope that Obama is not only a great uniting president (and that Democrats get a sustainable majority in Congress), but that this is the transition between racist nation and multi-racial nation!
nochickenhawk @ 50:
Hypocrite, as all of you are. Talking like you knew, know, went to school with, god-father to his son, just an adoring kneel-down to a person you thought was dead, Dick Gregory. Give me a freaking break. I can't believe the phony "black out" this nation is going through, is it in vogue? Am I 66 yrs. behind the times? This is sickening. HYPOCRITES !!
Isome @ 117:
1. Most of my Jewish friends that I've discussed race issues with, agree that African slavery is not viewed as a tragedy, in their community, like it is, as much as the Holocaust. 400,000 plus different families and tribes separated, with no history trail, I know African Tribe leaders are at fault too. (different topic). BBlack people have been given, No reparations, no apology, and no credit for building this country, along with the Irish and the Chinese. ( Try making a family tree in an American History class (bad eighth grade memory) and making it as far as your Great Grandfather, and thats it.)
I work very hard in my at my job, I pay my taxes, I don't feel like anybody owes my a thing!
however.......
2. Until you are that person sitting in the car with sirens behind you, and you are scared and innocent, you will never understand.
3. If you can't look across the room at any Obama gathering and recognize that people are sick of the Grand Old Parties code of ethics, which I remind you has alot to do with keeping races separated and at each other throats, and see that we are ready to unite the country, no matter what the color of your skin is. Can you do something good to make our country better?
4. get over yourselves so-called right winged, conservative, ingrates. You've been highjacking my Country's pride, content, and hapiness for too long. Aren't you tired of sitting on your porch with your shotgun? The revolution is happening! And you know what? We tricked you. It is televised,e-mailed, eviewed, downloaded, threaded, and posted on places like here. Your time is up, hatred and spite is out like beta. you're 66 so i know you get it.
I mean seriuosly "Black out"? You might as well thrown "mammy" in your post, apparently anywhere would have been fine.
I love my country, I'm so proud of it. I will tell you why, as soon as i download the latest gossip on brittney.
Isome @ 115:
Same here. People are now looking for their piece of the pie. They'll probably get as much as the midwestern farmers did when they helped elect Bush the Smarter.
Here's an ineresting link although it should probably be in it's own thread:

Dick Gregory is right, in every possible way. He is right to be angry with Bill Clinton for exploiting the "first Black president" tag. He's also right that Black-on-Black racism has undermined some of Obama's support with claims that he's "not Black enough." How ridiculous can you get?
Gregory realizes that President Obama can't cure all the ills and accumulated injustices of 300 years of racism in this country. But he's also smart enough not to toss out a loaf of bread just because it ain't pure pumpernickel. Just like everybody else, Barack Obama wasn't allowed to pick his parents, so if Black Americans can get past that hurdle, maybe they can fight to elect a president that will represent them better than any other in history...SO FAR.
Obama makes it hip to hope.
This video is great.
Verdillac @ 77:
Since you are married, legally for several years (supposedly the US recognizes monogamous heterosexual marriage internationally, but not gay marriage because we accept popular bigotry) why can't you legally bring her to the USA? Or are you just bitter on both sides of the border. Theoretically, she can work here if actually married to an American citizen, as can you (the USA citizen), so if you can't both work up there, come down here. Legal immigration would be a pleasant surprise for a change.
My brother speaks a world of truth and yes he is still alive
D @ 19:
Dick ("I'm not eating") Gregory does know better, but is playing on an audience that doesn't...
The only "Change" Obama is going to gives us is the change he leaves in our pockets.
From Obama's website:
“Obama, the nation’s only black senator, disagreed with claims that President Bush is racist or that the federal government responded poorly to Katrina because many of its victims were black.”
Right on, bro'.

Is that line plagiarized or did you warm up the crowd for the McCain rally the other night?
This might be a little late, not sure how many people are reading this thread now, but if you are an American trying to move to Canada, do not move to Ontario. You will not get a job. Even if you do have a skilled trade (Well, there are jobs where we need them, but not much). Move out West. You will have a lot more luck. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia (if you got balls, move to Nunavut. There are government grants up the wazoo for living up in Nunavut. If I lived in Nunavut a year after I finished University, I can get the government to just strike out my Student Loan).
I'm not black, but as a Mormon I know a little about oppression. My Mormon ancestors were abused and oppressed in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois between 1830 and 1846. In Missouri, there was an extermination order for Mormons that was not officially lifted until the 1980's. Even today, in many areas of America, Mormons are still treated as "less than" other people. I have personally experienced a little of this, even from non-Mormon members of my own family.
I say this not to minimize in any way the treatment of African-Americans, either today or in the past. Mormons have had a "cake-walk" compared to African-Americans in that regard. But still, there are others that understand how a black person feels, even if just a little. You are not alone.
Having said that, I do believe the Clintons are neither black nor Mormon ...

Remember what Bob Dylan warned the older generation:
Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times, they are a-changin'
Come mothers and fathers throughout the land
And don't criticize what you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand
For the times, they are a-changin'
Preach on, brother Gregory...preach on!!!

Before she was sent packing, we were put "on file"... if for any reason we enter the USA and they decide to look up her name or mine, she will be arrested... However, if we all have matching Passports, Customs and Immigrantion will just assume we're ignorant beaver-loving canucks.
These same people let the terrorists in...blamed Canada...They let idiot boy covered in blood through...blamed it on his dual citizenship.
When I become a Canadian, The USA will inform me that they reserve the right to revoke my US Citizenship any time they wish...I have enough friends up here who have received such a letter from the US Embassy, upon becoming a Canadian Citizen...nutz,eh?
Art. Art. Artists. Progressive artists. Where are they? Will they risk death like Gregory and his generation of artistic geniuses did in the South. I am an artist. I need to ask myself that question. Dick Gregory is my God.
Wow .. wish we whites had a brother like Dick Gregory
herbert @ 127:
Wow. A talking point? Seriously? Do you think we have never heard these sad talking points before?
BTW, what's elitist about passing on a stunning career on Wall Street to become a community organizer in Soutside Chicago?

Yes and you will also notice that there is a change in Yusuf Islam from when he made that statement to him now. At that time he was following a Muslim line of thinking that music was not okay - now he has several CDs out with Islamic devotional songs (called nasheeds) out. He even dressed differently back then.
clytemnestra @ 136:
You do, his name is Dick Gregory
deezus @ 139:

God damn, that man can make a point.
Stem cell research is permitted in the USA.
paranoia @ 12:
Dick Gregory is not a comedian. He is a philosopher. In the true meaning of the word, he doesn't put anything bad into his body. That's why he's still so alive. There was a period in his life when he was overweight, but he changed his eating (vegan) and drinking habits long ago. The man is a saint.
Verdillac @ 53:
Well, he did not quite just wander over the border without a thought... He was held, fingerprinted, questioned, a background check done on him, the Canadian police liaised with - the point was that, as a naturalised US citizen, with no actual evidence of wrongdoing, and carrying entirely legal items, they couldn't just refuse him entry to his own country. The chainsaw had discolouration, but the border officials say there was no evidence of it being blood, just rust. And demonstrating psychiatric problems with no evidence of intention of violence is not a good reason to detain a person.
The problem isn't that they let just any lunatic over the border - as it happens, they did everything in their power to check him out; the problem is that a double standard is applied, and bigotry and fear overtake good sense when it comes to people of colour and us foreign types.
