Ooh, a blog against theocracy! Cool!

The UK got rid of its blasphemy laws recently. Perhaps the attitude will spread.

Cheney was the guy who said, " what the hell do you mean you are going to tell the truth if you are served a subpeona from Congress"

He then pulled the trigger of his shotgun and blew his business partners face off.

Why isn't there more outrage over the Tibet incidents? Methinks its because we have been sanitized to brutal suppressions and also from all the images from the gulf wars that we dont really really worry about human suffering any more. I have seen the Tibetan refugee camps and the squalor those poor people live in. The difference in their condition vis a vis the Dalai Llama's, who used to hob nob with celebrities willy-nilly is stark and I used to hate him for that. Why wasnt he doing enough to bring their plight to the world's attention?

When his successor was chosen(early 2000s), they had to smuggle him overnight to India to protect his life. Dalai Llama is considered to be an incarnation of Buddha and hence he is revered by the Tibetans and he is their spiritual and government leader. The Chinese authorities have been fighting with India pre- 1500s for the territories in Aksai Chin, Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nepal , Bhutan. India wasn't interested in 'colonizing' any country and was content in being the big brother. After the British took over India, the chinese agreed to stop their nonsense on the border and the McMohan line was born.

The chinese saw their chances and attacked Tibet. Tibet approached the UN but couldn't get anyone to listen to them and Nehru with his commie allies in Delhi didn't support Tibetans although offered them refuge.
After that Nehru signed a retarded agreement with the chinese titiled "Panchasheel" or 5 principles for peaceful coexistence. Then China attacked India to take over Aksai chin so they can build a route to Pakistan for opium and arms trade. This region is a meeting point of : Afghanistan, India, Pak, China and Southern tip of erstwhile USSR (forget what country it is now).

NEW YORK - Gov. David Paterson, who took over the state's top job Monday after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal, has admitted he and his wife Michelle had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago, a newspaper reported.

Its painful . . . people don't like pain . . . we don't like what we see so we fudge the facts . . . its called denial. I felt like I had been struck by lightening when I discovered the depths of their (neocons) deception. But it feels better knowing . . . like when your a kid and you're afraid of what's in the closet so your Mom/Dad hold your hand and take you over to the closet so that you can see what's really in there. After you see, you feel better. We spend so much of our energy trying to defend the indefensible. I cried when I heard the Dad talk about how the VA wouldn't treat his son. His son came to him on the porch and asked him to hold him like a little boy on the rocking chair. He did. The Dad then said that the next time he held his son was when they lowered him from the garden hose he used to hang himself in the garage.

Indeed. And frankly, it's an insane motto to begin with. As Christopher Hitchens said, "Every day, the New York Times carries a motto in a box on its front page. "All the News That's Fit to Print," it says. It's been saying it for decades, day in and day out. I imagine most readers of the canonical sheet have long ceased to notice this bannered and flaunted symbol of its mental furniture. I myself check every day to make sure that the bright, smug, pompous, idiotic claim is still there."

mystic's picture

Charlie Rose appeared tonight with a magnificent shiner in his left eye and a bandaided cut above his eyebrow. He "claims" it was because of a fall on the pavement, but I can tell you that as a plastic surgeon, falls on the sidewalk almost never cause such injuries which are almost invariably due to someone punching someone hard in the face. Yeah yeah, Charlie has a public image and is not going to admit to what really happened, but I find it insulting that he really expects the public to believe that story. Come clean Charlie. You did or said something so bad that this person bagged you in the left eye. Were you drunk? I love the way Charlie always talks on how great the U.S. is imposing democracy in the rest of the world, but I really wish the f* would look at himself in the mirror and say we should try to impose democracy here at home first. Charlie's shiner is like the country: It's not really what you'd like one to think; It has darker reasons for being pathologically something else.

How long will the Fox Right wing Propaganda channel be able to retain their FCC license , after ANOTHER blatant , VILE CAMPAIGN against Barrack Obama . Ron Paul was my first choice , but we can't allow a supposed news network , to launch a coordinated effort to make him look guilty by association . O'Reilly had an hour straight , Hannity hour straight , the gorgeous Greta, not including all through the day , a non stop smear campaign , to derail another liberal candidate, with Swift Boat Tactics, they even brag about .

If Clarence Thomas was Obama , he would rightly declare a high-tech LYNCHING , because that is exactly what Murdoch has his little trolls doing , by not just treating this as a news story , but creating hysteria to make obama look guilty for another mans words .

This fraudulent network needs to have their FCC license pulled , for their partisan and viscous attack on an American candidate . While coddling John Mcsame and promoting HIS candidacy , in a shameless , unprofessional manner . Avoiding the even WORST connection between McSame and Haggee .

Joseph Nacchio was the CEO of Qwest Communications, and seven months before 9-11 (let me repeat, BEFORE 9-11), he and his company were asked to assist the US government in providing access to their communications networks without a warrant. Of all the telecoms, Nacchio and Qwest were the only ones to refuse. The government consequently pulled a bunch of their top-secret contracts and generally made it impossible for Qwest to do business. The stock dropped precipitously, and later federal prosecutors arrested Nacchio for insider trading, for having sold a significant amount of his holdings before the stock tanked. He claimed that he was actually trying to raise capital to exercise options and buy more stock, as he expected the government contracts to be renewed. This all went to trial and Nacchio was convicted last year.

But today, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the conviction, and ordered a new trial with a new judge, as the old one excluded evidence from an expert witness that would have validated Nacchio's claims. In a new trial, even more information about the Bush Administration's efforts to immediately conduct massive spying on American citizens upon the moment they entered office will come to light. The goal was total information awareness, an enormous drift net of data that could be used to any of a thousand pernicious ends. Among the evidence that could be provided are those secret contracts and communications on why they were cancelled, and when.

This is why you don't give blanket amnesty to lawsuits where the truth about illegal spying and surveillance could emerge.

The goofy complaining about programming crap aside, the FCC does handle licenses for radio, television and other broadcasting. Without someone to regulate licensing, you'd have chaos with people walking all over each other's bandwidths and the like.

The FCC hands out fines with ridiculous right leaning heavy handiness. That's something that does need to be altered and fixed.

The FCC does regulate cable. They regulate all interstate telecommunications and that includes cable. Cable networks have a different set of content regulations, that's why HBO can run the Sopranos and network stations have to edit it.

Not to disagree with your sentiments, but why do we even have an FCC to begin with? Let's get rid of that entity altogether.

If the agency were confined to nothing but handing out licenses in a completely neutral manner, and preventing technological chaos, that'd be ok. I suppose that's legitimate regulation of interstate commerce.

Confine it strictly to that, and I'll go along. :)

They've been criticized for how they hand out licenses too. They've set the bar in a way that it takes a significant amount of money to meet the requirements for a license and therefore knocks out smaller players that might be able to bring something good to the table. So your point about handing them out in a neutral fashion is a good one that they should at least try to meet.

Thanks. I googled but was unable to find a definitive answer, which was what all the equivocation was about.

What I do recall is that broadcast stations have an obligation to serve the public-ie with education programming news shows and in the day there was a fairness deal-equal time-on political stuff. That seems to have evaporated, now that they're on titty and swearing patrol.

Back in the 70's there was the Family Viewing Hour and that was a bit of a disaster. I'm sure the right wingers would love to bring it back since I've already seen articles suggesting a push to get something like that back on the books. Ironically the network that generally airs "questionable" material in the earlier time slots the most is Fox.

While I don't think hardcore porno featuring Larry Craig and his airport's greatest hits probably shouldn't be running at 7pm on NBC, I think that a lot of people get their panties in a bunch far too quickly.

So your point about handing them out in a neutral fashion is a good one that they should at least try to meet.

Indeed the FCC has been criticized for the way it hands out licenses. Under First Amendment law, governments may place reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on speech (eg, protest demonstrations in the public park must end at 10pm, and not spill over into the children's playground.). To enforce such basic regulations, governments are allowed to require licenses or permits to hold the demonstration, but the application for such a permit must be a formality. The official in charge of processing the permits must have no discretion whatsoever over who gets a permit and who doesn't. PETA comes in and asks for a permit, PETA is supposed to get one, and abide by its terms. And if the KKK comes in the next day and asks for one, the same should result.

But the FCC is a crazy federal entity that mostly engages in censorship and discrimination. The First Amendment says that Congress shall make no law that abridges the freedom of speech. I take the text seriously. No law means no law. So, I'm not entirely convinced that Congress even has the Constitutional power to establish the FCC to begin with.

As a matter of practicality, though, I wouldn't complain too much if it were confined to doling out licenses in a neutral manner and preventing technological chaos.

Well, I wasn't just thinking of the fairness doctrine, but also the duty they have to act in the public interest.

In Seattle, we have Belo, which bought KING from a local owner, started KONG in Everett on the UHF band and demanded (and got) TCI/ATT/Comcast to drop the CBC in favour of their grotty regional 'News' channel.

Three channels. Kong is almost always paid programming, infomercial shite, and now KING (the NBC affiliate) is turning into a goddamn infomercial hole on the off times. Massive infomercials isn't really in the public interest...

Also their news is teh suck. People mispronouncing shit, misstating bullshit as fact, and when I write them (polite-ish) letters, those fuckers never respond.

That's one of the most succint ways of putting it that I've heard in awhile. I think people forget that freedom of speech doesn't mean making every side get heard. It just gives you a chance to have a voice for your side.

The problem that most people have is when news organizations start claiming to be unbiased but clearly push an agenda, that's something that needs some fixing and there's no real way to do it. And I would like to see more entities and people covered by FUX able to sue the self-labeled "fair and balanced" network when it lies. I do not receive HBO but I suspect that it will tell the familiar story of how John Adams and the other Founding Fathers fought the British because they resisted paying unfair taxes and wanted to be free from the tyrannical rule of their English overlords. But one would be quite surprised if the program actually posed a theory, perhaps a very strong theory, why the colonists rebelled and that would because of the issue of slavery. A book that came out a few years ago [Slave Nation by Alfred Blumrosen and Ruth Blumrosen 2006] lays out the groundwork for this plausible theory by noting, among other things, that the Virginia Resolution, from which came the 1st Continental Congress of 1774, involved the ownership of property and in particular the property of slaves.

John Adams agreed with the southern states that slavery should be upheld. After the Revolutionary War, Adams would continue to be against the idea that slaves in the newly formed United States should be freed. What may have terrified the wealthy landowners in the New World was a ruling that took place in England involving the Sommersett case, which ruled that a slave that had fled from America to England in the 1770s was not legally required to return to America in chains and as a slave and was subsequently declared to be a free man. The gentry in America greatly feared that the ruling involving the former slave could then include those slaves residing in America and, because of that possibility occurring, the north and the south aligned themselves in their fight against England.

The hagiographies and flag waving of the Founding Fathers make it quite doubtful if this particular version of why the American Revolution was fought will ever be seen on television or the big screen anytime in the near future.

1) Great article on the Obama Pastor controversy: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/9095_Page2.html

2) Even better is the powerful comment at the bottom of the article, by someone formerly on the religious right:

[Deleted. Bandwidth is expensive. You may not reprint lengthy text from your own works or those of others, including news articles. You may link to them-Sitemonitor]

The hypocrisy of the right denouncing Obama, because of his minister's words, is staggering. They are the same people who argue for the right to "bear arms" as "insurance" to limit government power. They are the same people that (in the early 1980s roared and cheered when I called down damnation on America as "fallen away from God" at their national meetings where I was keynote speaker, including the annual meeting of the ultraconservative Southern Baptist convention, and the religious broadcasters that I addressed. Today we have a marriage of convenience between the right wing fundamentalists who hate Obama, and the "progressive" Clintons who are playing the race card through their own smear machine. As Jane Smiley writes in the Huffington Post "[The Clinton's] are, indeed, now part of the 'vast right wing conspiracy.' (http://www.huffingtonpost.com... ) Both the far right Republicans and the stop-at-nothing Clintons are using the "scandal" of Obama's preacher to undermine the first black American candidate with a serious shot at the presidency. Funny thing is, the racist Clinton/Far Right smear machine proves that Obama's minister had a valid point. There is plenty to yell about these days.

So, what you are saying is "Cut his mike." shouldn't be in the broadcast.

I love when BillO blows a gasket and bellows "cut his mike." That's how you can tell when someone's really gotten him and defeated his talking points.

It's like the Spin Zone version of a touchdown.

You'd think he'd see it coming. Blowme Really was a punter in college, and continues to be to this day.

I just popped in to say hello, i must go to bed.

If you can find a way to see HBO's John Adams, please do.

The Continental Congress reminds me very much about how we argue over what to do in our current circumstances. They were certainly not of one mind. When finally they all agreed to declare independance from Great Britain they were profoundly struck silent by what they had finally achieved.

GNA! :)

The hagiographies and flag waving of the Founding Fathers make it quite doubtful if this particular version of why the American Revolution was fought will ever be seen on television or the big screen anytime in the near future.

one thing the show left out (other than the slavery issue in regards the votes for independence as for virginia, south and north carolina) is that it was the honored rev mayhew who coined the term "no taxation without representation"

yes, one of the first patritots spoke these words of rebellion from the pulpit

politics and the church have always been intertwined in this country

It is to the everlasting shame of the New York Times that not one single word was mentioned at all regarding the testimony of the Winter Soldiers in Silver springs, Md. This coming from the paper of record whose motto is "All the News That's fit to Print." All the more reason to be grateful for such independent media such as Free Speech TV and Democracy Now! which did broadcast the testimony of these soldiers these past four days.

I actually DID check it regularly until I went to high school, Where we used the NYTimes as a factual reference for history class. I stopped believing after reading a story about Chile and how the Social Democratis Party was sooo bad because they wanted their own people to benefit from their natural resources.

The NY Times hired Bill Kristol, it lost what little credibility it had left.

The credibility of the times was permanently extinguished when they frd the propaganda in the leadup to the Iraq War. Judy Miller, Brooks, MoDo...etc cannot be offset by Herbert and Krugman.

MY mistake. Reagan did veto the law. But that did not change much in terms of media competition and truth. It wasn't until Bill signed a law in 1996, that actually enabled media ownership of multiple stations and lowered the restrictions on foreign ownership of American media that the real problems began.

Natch

by dday

People mispronouncing shit, misstating bullshit as fact, and when I write them (polite-ish) letters, those fuckers never respond.

but doesn't Kong TV show "Almost Live" every weeknight?(it wasn't on this week on King because the ACLU bought the airtime this sat.
