Go Home

Baseball 2008

It's finally back. Everyone on C&L knows I'm a huge Yankee fan. Hey, my mom and dad's first date was in the Bronx watching Whitey Ford pitch his first major league game. I do root a bit for the Dodgers since I live in LA, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs break the Curse of the Billy Goat if the Yanks don't make it to the series which should be really tough with such a young pitching staff. Let's have your picks...

Ah, it brings back memories of moving to Tennessee in the summer before 3rd grade. Second day there, some kid called me a Yankee as we were picking sides for wiffle ball. I said "I hate the Yankees," (at which point smiles on my companions) "I'm an Indians fan." (At which point they all looked at me like I was the dumbest person in the world.) So go Cleveland!

John,

My Dad used to take me to at least one double-header a year at Yankee Stadium in the days of Mantle and Maris, Clete Boyer, Yohi erra,Whitey Ford, and the rest of the greats. I was at the first "Bat Day" at Yankee Stadium when they gave Little League bats to all kids under the ge of 12; in the middle of the game, they asked the kids to hold the bats out: what an awesome sight!

Can you imagine giving out thousands of bats to kids now?

Wow!

This isn't the year to be talking about the goat episode. The last time the Cubs won a World Series, they were the beneficiary of the Merkle Boner. I like to think they're haunted by Fred Merkle and the NY Giants. I bring this up because this year, if things go as they have, will be 100 Years of Failure for the Cubs. I don't know of any organized team in anything that's lost 100 years straight. Quite a feat.

Obviously, I'm a White Sox fan. We only lost 87 years.

I am rooting for the team that has a no tolerance policy toward steroids and goes back to supporting the use of simple drugs that won't kill a person outright. Which one is it? It's all about winning. Players have to take drugs to be winners these days. To produce the profits their owners desire. No fans, no baseball team.

I hope we do better than last year.I feel like a part-owner,as every time Ibuy something I`m paying for the stadium.I also just thought of something. The owners are Bushies.I HOPE THE REDS LOSE EVERY GAME.

The curse of Alex Rodriguez is going to continue again this year. The Yankees should have tossed him aside and focus on rebuilding the starting pitching staff.

Brewers all the way!
* If Fielder and Braun equal last year's numbers
* If Sheets stays healthy
* If Weeks breaks out
* If the defense improves
* If Gagne pitches well
* If the starters make it past the 6th inning
* If the bullpen doesn't get overworked

A lot of ifs, but on paper the Brewers should be there in October. They have a good mix of veterans and young guns, so I am hopeful. Just as long as it's not the Cubs.

Ever hear of a guy named Bill James? If you're a baseball fan, chances are he's changed the way your favorite team does business. He might even be the reason they got rid of your favorite player! James invented something called "Sabermetrics" - loosely defined as the analysis of baseball through objective evidence. Does it work? Since he got hired by the Red Sox five years ago, the team has won two World Series.

Maybe we should apply Sabermetrics to Politics and Government.

I 100% agree. Indians up 3-0 against Red Sox in AL Finals, and lose 4-3, and Sox repeat. The Curse is truly reversed so that now they win 86 out of 100 WS in 2000-2099.

AL East: Red Sox
AL Central: Indians
AL West: Mariners
Al WC: Yankees

AL Champs: Red Sox

NL East: Mets
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: Padres
NL WC: Phillies

NL Champs: Phillies

WS Champs: Red Sox in 6 (Sox finally get to celebrate WS victory at Fenway, and Philly fans get a new reason to hate New England)

AL MVP: Miguel Cabrera
NL MVP: Ryan Howard (again)

AL Cy: Felix Hernandez
NL Cy: Cole Hamels

lewisnclark's picture

Well, John, you're a good guy and I've decided it's not your fault that you root for the Yankees. That's an accident of birth thing that connects you back to days of yore, before the insufferable Steinbrenner era.

But the Dodger love disturbs me, buddy. When I lived in LA I took a lot of pride for rooting against the damn Boys of Summer. Of course, I'm a dyed in the wool San Francisco Giants fan going back to my boyhood worship of Willie McCovey; so I know right from wrong. Which in this case is very simple. Giants = good; Dodgers = evil.

Anyway, I'm telling ya... it was an amazing feeling to boo Orel Hershiser in Dodger Stadium!

In closing I want to say to all the impressionable kids out there that, contrary to the example of a very strong and grounded individual like John Amato, please be aware that, much like playing golf, rooting for the Yankees can be a gateway drug to becoming a Republican.

So please don't be seduced by the glamour and glitz of Yankee World. If you do you're playing with fire, and the next thing you know you might be discussing your stock portfolio while cheering for Roger Clemens.

I also live in LA and watched in a surreal moment the other day as Torre walked out the mound in a Dodger uniform. I tried to rationalize in my mind that Joe was probably an old Dodger fan from the Brooklyn days and thus it made sense. But they are celebrating the 50th year of the Dodgers out here, and it's not, it's the 50th year since the Dodgers abandoned Brooklyn to head West, not something to cheer about.

MLB? As in Mucho Lagging Boredom?

No thanks. I'll stick to watching proper baseball on NHK World, from Japan. Korean ball is also excellent, though more AL than NL, and I don't get it on my TV. (Both leagues are halfway between AAA and the Majors.)

Bud Selig and the MLB owner don't want to get rid of steroids, no matter what they say or do, or how many cheaters get caught. It's just like the olympics: records sell tickets, not race winners. Home run totals and record times are sexy, sacrifice plays and gold medals aren't.

If the MLB owners really wanted an end to steroids, they would call the strike zone as the rules say: armpits to knees and the width of the plate. If the strike zone were the size of a door instead of a keyhole, all the steroid monkeys would be out of baseball in two years. How, exactly, you ask?

First, juiced up hitters wouldn't be able to swing through a tiny strike zone anymore. Rising fastballs and curveballs would return. Singles hitters who can move the bat will be at a premium, and the freaks would be out of a job. Barroid Bonds would be laughed at while Vladimir Guerrero would probably become the dominant player in the game.

Second, without the need for overpowering stuff, pitchers wouldn't need to bulk up either. Knuckleballs would return, and pitchers wouldn't need to overwhelm hitters anymore. We'd see more 20 game winners with the same amount of talent as there is now. "Strikeout kings" are boring; I want to see contact and infields with gold gloves.

Third, players wouldn't get injured as much. We'd see fewer decapitating line drives, fewer injuries on unnatural bodies from wear, and outfield collisions that don't cause concussions. Fewer homers and more contact also means more base stealing and creative managing. Smart management and drafting would win World Series, not chequebooks. (Yankee fans, prepare for another 20 year drought.)

When teams like the mid-1980s Cardinals return, call me. Until then, I'll stick to exciting baseball from the Land of the Rising Fun. Or did you not see the "World Baseball Classic" in 2006 and not know what I'm talking about?

Go A's!

Yeah, I said it. Even though they're in rebuilding mode, they might surprise everyone in the West Division.

Otherwise, I'd like to see Cleveland finish the job this year.

Sadly, I predict that my two teams (the Giants and Royals) will languish.

The world series winners will not be an a American team but Canadian.........of course this only will prove that our Americans are better than your Americans. However the winning run will be knocked in by a Canadian.........Matt Stairs.

Go Jays Go!

The series will be won in six and the Jays will beat Detroit one of our tradition highway rivals when they were in our division.

Sorry Yankee fans

Go Tigers!

2006 was a welcome change from the two decades of futility following the exciting pennant race of 1987 and the wire to wire WS in 1984. I've been a fan ever since we were finally able to catch a game at the old Tiger Stadium in the mid-70s. The first three or four times we went there, the games were rained out. Lucky me--in my first game, I saw Mark Fidrych pitch, and I've loved the Tigers ever since (strike years not included).

Was he as goofy as he was made out to be?

It's really too bad that his injury didn't happen a decade or two later. Today they could have fixed his arm, and he could have had a full career.

Sweet Jesus! How soon you all forget about the Rockies.

Huge Yankees fan, but we've still got 10 years of losing and self-loathing to go, all at an affordable $27.5 mil a year.

Die, A-Rod, Die!

(Note: I'm of course speaking the German for, "The, A-Rod, The". No reason for mods to get upset.)

He was friendly and very humble; not goofy at all.
I'm not a Tigers fan, but I remember cheering for him when he made his big splash!

I like your German...but Dude...he's the best player in the game. How many runs scored does Jeter's leadership give you? How many home runs do the pin stripes provide? Those who say that A-Rod chokes in the post season 1) haven't looked at his career numbers 2) taken a critical look at many of the Captain's years and 3) don't understand statistics and sample size.

You haven't won in a few years because A-Rod can't pitch. If you had put something other than a AAA starting staff last year, your team would have dominated more than it did.

John is a die-hard Yankee fan and doesn't know the National League at all. He is a closeted Dodger-hater. He wants the Cubs so he can torture me as Dodger Fan. He knows it would pain me if the Dodgers don't win it this year and he hates the fact that Torre signed with the D's. Stick to your own league, Amato. Heh, heh, heh.

Tigers are a certainty! Who cares if they give up 5 runs a game ... they're going to score 9!

AL Central - the WORST division in baseball due to the fact that it's home to the WORST team in all of baseball - sadly, my hometown KC Royals - as well as THREE teams I cannot stand: White Sux, Detroit (THE MOST OVERRATED TEAM IN BASEBALL!), and Cleveland.

Go A's!

Yeah, I said it. Even though they're in rebuilding mode, they might surprise everyone in the West Division.

Otherwise, I'd like to see Cleveland finish the job this year.

Youre right. they could definately come out of left field (no pun intended) crack some heads in a rather weak AL west, especially if kelvim escobar has that season-ending shoulder surgery iv been hearing about. heres how im gonna break it down:

AL West:A's (so what if I'm bias. screw it.)
AL Central:Tigers
AL East:Red Sox
AL WildCard:Indians

AL Champ:Indians

NL West:D-Backs
NL Central:Brewers
NL East: Mets
NL WildCard:Dodgers

NL Champ:Mets

Indians in 6 to win it. That's right. The yanks aint got the pitching to make it to the postseason. and it'll take a truck load of prospects for the A's to offload Rich Harden, so dont even think about it Johnny boy.

Retired Navy's picture

The ghost of Roberto Clemente will help the Pirates return to greatness. It will certainly take something like that to get them into playoff contention again.

vontrapp's picture

Oakland A's.

Why?

BECAUSE I SAID SO!

Rick's picture

John:

Your Yankees have the hitting but not the pitching this year. Look across the river at the Mets and you will see a good pitching staff.

I like the Mets vs. Detroit in the world series.

The dark horses are Boston and Arizona - yes Arizona with that great 1-2 pitching punch.

Let's Go Blue Jays!!!

Also its interesting that every time the Red Sox win the World Series, the White Sox are the next winner/

Well, that's not true. The sequence was reversed in 1917/1918, with the White Sox wining in 1917 and the Red Sox winning (against the Cubs, natch) in 1918.

But as a White Sox fan, I'd happily watch my team follow up last year's Red Sox WS repeat with one of their own.

As for the Cubs. . . the fans are going to have to stop referring to "the century of futility" very soon, and just resign themselves to the fact that maybe this was just the first century of futility.

John,
Read your site each night and thanks for the articals.
I hope my Red Sox come out of the AL east . Being a Red Sox fan means you
follow the Yankees almost as closely. Other then the Sox winning these last few years, the biggest and best develpment possibly for the Sox is Hank Steinbrenner.
Hank could be the largest reason keeping the Sox ahead of the Yanks for the next generation...At least thats what my brother and I constantly tell each other...

Anyone that is a Yankee fan would be happy living in Taiwan, where I live. This country has Yankee fever because of Wang ChenMing. Too bad he isn't on the Mets. (yep, I am a lifelong Met fan).

Ok, so I'm not the most sports savvy, but I gotta go with my hometown Birds...yes, the Baltimore Orioles!

They're not the same since Iron Man Cal Ripken retired, but I miss B-more and so I'll root, root root for the home team from Hillbilly Hell...Arkyland.

Tom Whitaker's picture

This is Red Sox nation people! Go Red Sox all the way and there is no doubt in my mind. The Red Sox have broken the curse and their a dynasty again! The pitching staff in phenomenal and the line up is impeccable. Have you seen mannies sick hair? How could you possibly say that he wont hit like 40 bombs and win the world series for the 3rd time in 5 years. David Ortiz is also healthy again and lost uneeded pounds in the off season. With the whole team healthy and focused on another pennant the Sox will bring another one back to Boston!

Jack Leary's picture

so many red sox fans think their battling against the riptide playing in the same division as the "evil empire" yankees, but make no mistake, the Red Sox are nipping at their heels in payroll spending. (Yankees at $210 million, Red Sox $150 million, the disparity would be far more insignificant if A-Rod was not on the payroll.) The way I see it, theres the Evil Empire, and his red-headed step-child up in Boston, no pun intended. Let's hear it for small-market teams. Go Oakland!
