In Martin County, Kentucky last week, John McCain added another one his "Forgotten Places" to the growing list of places his campaign would now like to forget. With a straight face, McCain told the residents of the economically devastated region that eBay represents their economic future. And he did so by appropriating the words of Meg Whitman, who just happens to be not only McCain's national campaign co-chair, but the former CEO of eBay.

For the details, see:
"McCain's Answer for Poverty? eBay!"

Last Monday he went to NO and talked about tearing it down.
Last Wednesday he didn't remember saying what he said on Monday.

Today he probably doesn't even remember he was there.

Why the hell is he wearing a bulletproof vest? Oh wait... that must be the master carpenter tool vest they gave him before he singlehandedly rebuilt three houses and wetnursed those six orphans...

with the ruling for the indiana id case today by the supreme court, it
is evident the reichwingneocon judges are intent on caring on the
illegal process of eliminating qualified democrat voters and any other
person not in the gop.

this could possibly be the worst decision the supreme court has made
beyond politically throwing the gore election to bush.

this country is moving swiftly towards a major civil war of its own.
the privileged elite white corporate bastards had better hope the
middle and lower class don't ask France for the guillotine.

There is some "entertainment value" to this old fart. I realize this is the best "the dying party" can toss up there....but damn, it's so pathetic.

That's NOT to say that he can't win. There are enough f*cking idiots living in the States and enough corruption to steal an election, that the old fart could end up living in the WH with his bitch wife...but it's got a certain amount of humor to it.

Sad, the day when the best thing the opposition party can muster is some old geezer that was tortured for five years in Hanoi as their "hero", and that qualifies him for taking the whole country into the depths of the toilet.

We "have come a long way baby". Only problem is, it's the WRONG way.

lafin gas's picture

“Safe,” from what? The blackwater goons? Or the street gangs or the next Katrina? Or maybe the carpetbaggers that are trying to buy (steal) as much as they can get?
What the hell is he talking about?

Why isn't his wife wearing a bulletproof vest too? There she is - her Armani suit in full display. Now - last time I looked - cashmere wasn't bulletproof. His standing next to her protected, while she goes it alone just about sums McCain up for me: it's all about him. He could give a good god damn about anyone else - including his wife.

That's despicable.

Thank God Reverand Wright had mercy and after 2 or 3 month of hearing the same soundbites played over and over again by the concerned mainstream media to him and to us with true determination and conviction (Hannity and O’Reilly have become the ultimate champions in fast soundbite playing, no doubts about that) Wright gave them a real variety of sound bites to choose from. Please, after 2 or 3 months of having your life’s legacy exposed and mocked by concerned trolls from Fox News and everyone else who did that, every single person if being given a humble, honorary stage to have a say and finally respond to the 30 second repetitions he must have endured every freakin’ day for months, he would be producing soundbites as if there was no tomorrow and so he did. Is it so hard to understand? MSM, if combined together, played days worth of those 30 second clips over the last months so they should be more than capable of handling the new ones if they like to play them so much, should they not. What was the part about the roosters?

Regarding the (304) super delegates who haven't declared. Obviously they hold a lot of power. HRC keeps saying she has been totally vetted which of course is absurd. If she is the nominee, fat chance!, the reps will be reviewing all of her hubby's indiscretions, many of which he won't remember ;) I digress.

My thought is since these folk hold so much power, they should get together & say to the Clintons, why haven't you released the donor list to the Clinton library, you must be hiding some pretty nefarious donors, eh.

What I'm saying is they hold all the cards & can pretty much dictate what they want from both candidates & HRC, in particular is in no position to say no to any of their requests.

I know what you're thinkin', since when have the dems ever been organized ;)

The Secret Service probably made him wear it.

At any rate, judging by the time of the photo based on the sun, I'd say he was there while the gangstas were still in bed. Let's hear him call it safe after 10pm on Friday night.

That crowd with him was realllly small. I mean, really small. Besides the tour guides and the security detail, was there anybody in the community with him? So much for support.

We'll see how safe it is come hurricane season. If the levees (rebuilt with newspaper to plug in the holes) stand, then it's safe. If not...then we're screwed.

Wright didn't set out seeking the attention. The media gave it to him. Is it his fault that he now has an audience - temporarily so - and he makes use of it?

are you so blind to the utter evil that this nation's government has inflicted on the world?

I know a WHITE Christan theologian who has attributed over 1 billion lives needlessly lost as a result of the US empire project (both military caused deaths - and economically caused deaths) since the US became the dominant roleplayer after 1945.

Nothing & I believe the Rev is sincere & I agree with just about everything he is saying except the aids/us govt. nonsense etc., but anyway you look at it he is throwing Obama under the bus ...

& in doing so is not helping Obama's campaign, so in that sense he has a lot to do with fixing our healthcare system, balancing the budget, or getting us out of the mess in Iraq? ie if he prevents Obama from being elected by continuing his current agenda, Obama won't be able to fix diddly!

The Rev is right in what he is saying, but his timing is awful, but on the bright side American's have short memories & Nov. is a longgg way off. But he would be doing Obama a big favor if he went on an extended vacation.

I believe the Rev has done Obama a favor by throwing him under the bus. Wright's motives are pretty obvious, with all this publicity what an advance he will have on his next book. Yes, he has something in common with Ann Coulter. Publicity seekers unite!

How far up your rectum are you reaching for that? All the way to your elbow? Shoulder?

No, heard a couple talking heads today asking what possible motives could Wright have in throwing Obama under the bus & this was just one of several scenarios that was mentioned, since it's obvious Wright doesn't care whether Obama gets elected.

His motives & actions will now be discussed ad nauseam by the media, just what Obama doesn't need.

Media whore?

He is not seeking publicity, he is clearing his name from scurrilous accusations by racist white guys.

I'll stick by my point. Wright's a media whore just like most preachers of his stature. Listen to his words, watch his gestures.

I think Wright has found out what a lot of people have found out: Being famous is fun, even if you are famous for being an idiot.

really?

what did Wright say that was really wrong?

Are you upset at just the God Damn America bit?

because if you look at all that the US has done since 1945 - you should be saying it.

No, i will say God Damn America right now and mean it for several good reasons. It seems to me that Wright is enjoying the limelight. I really am not sure i trust people like that very much. Sorry.

Agreed. He seems to be chomping at the bit for the spotlight.

One thing I'm confused about though is the whole "Reverend" aspect. Maybe I'm just used to pastors preaching about the spiritual aspect of life and not social commentary. And I know that "Reverends" from the far right do the exact same thing (God will damn America for gay marriage mkay?). It all just makes me uncomfortable.

One thing I think that's good about this though is that one thing the media inadvertantly risks doing is awakening viewers to the fact that Obama and Wright are two different people with separate opinions. By giving Wright a voice, at least he can elaborate on what he has intentioned by past actions, thus furthering himself from Obama (a good thing, in my opinion) .

A cake walk for Obama ??? let me review the last 40 years of dems running for president. Dems won the presidency (3) times. Carter won with slightly over 50% of the vote & Clinton didn't get 50% either time he won, both were southern governors.

Back to reality:

positives 1) Obama, looks more like change in a change election 2) The dems will have the money advantage 3) as Peggy Noonan has mentioned, dubya has destroyed the rep party 4) McBush is a god awful candidate & right wing talk radio hates him 5) right track, wrong track

minuses 1) Obama is young & inexperienced & many vote for president on who would be the best Commander in Chief issue alone 2) Obama is African-American in a country that still has major race problems 3) the dems have a long history of grasping defeat from the jaws of victory 4) It's very iffy when HRC concedes that she will do her best to help unite the party, you may have noticed Obama & HRC do not like each other!

Having said all this, I expect a close election, it will only be a cake walk if McBush totally implodes which may happen. Obama has picked the one election cycle where he has a chance to win. After (8) years of Bush, the worst president in history, the economy tanking, gasoline sky high, the iraq war which will probably go down as the worst blunder in u.s. history & a rep admin which has violated the constitution every which way to Sunday etc. etc. ~ Obama may be the right man at the right time.

If it was Al Gore, it would be a cake walk imo, but dems always want to make it exciting & this time is no different choosing between an African-American & a Woman.

& so it goes ...

How come the lead story on every TV news network and the front page of the New York Times and the Washington Post gets ignored by Crooks & Liars? Why has C&L imposed a blackout of the Rev Wright story?

That's not a bad idea. They should do it on the line of not discussing 9/11. Same rules.

But then again this is the most ridiculous repug tactic in use. Rev. Wright is a non-issue. I dig the man and will pay to see him front and center.

Please repugs name one person you agree with 100%. Oh yeah I forgot that's most of your followers.

hagee's mission

"The mission of John Hagee Ministries is to aggressively fulfill the commission that Jesus Christ gave to his followers to go into the world and make disciples of all people."

"Our purpose is to bring the lost to Jesus Christ and to build up and encourage those who are already believers."

Emphasis is mine.

Um yeah, that's essentially the Great Commission for all of the Christian church.
Are you arguing the semantics of "make"? Because that'd be totally lame.

Why all the off-topic comments on this thread? I thought that was not allowed here. I'm sick of all the Rev. Wright stuff, so I stopped reading the comments half-way through. What does Rev. Wright have to do with John McCain wearing a flak jacket in New Orleans?

A. It's Open Thread
B. I'm also sick of it, but (I think) it's best to talk it through rather than just telling everybody to drop it (another media hit and run). Just to clarify, the reason I believe it's good to talk it out is for the sake of the general masses, who don't exactly know their politic. They apparently don't because it's front page news-worthy.

Shows the quality of the teevee and established media sources, doesn't it?
Take it like the AP Britney Spears blackout.

The picture was doctored; McCain was NOT wearing a vest (would have been funny if he did, but he didn't). You can see the raw footage here:

You cannot do this without stating it's a photoshop job prominently. This makes all of us look bad.

Actually, the DNC add is 100% accurate. They did not claim McCain stated he wanted 100 years of war in Iraq. The stated he wanted to STAY in Iraq for 100 years, which is precisely what he said, even taking into account the desperate spin his minions have attempted to put on it. The simple fact is that there is NO WAY the U.S. can stay 100 years in Iraq without getting shot at, so McCain's premise of a 100 year peaceful occupation is pure fantasy.

Nice. And the DNC '100 years of war ad' is accurate too, evidently.

LIVE EARTH IS BACK: Reunion Tour, Live Earth is back, so get ready to rock - http://grist.org/news/2008/04/28/live_earth/index.html
Mark your calendars for Oct. 5: Live Earth is back and ready to rock. Kevin Wall, founder of last summer's international concert extravaganza, says that the October shows will be held on U.S. college campuses, and the focus will be on pushing the presidential candidates to address environmental issues.
Locations, bands, and all other specifics are yet to be determined, but will Al Gore be involved again? Says Wall: "Absolutely."

The US and China Are Over a Barrel: by Michael T. Klare - http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-klare28apr28,0,1651...
Let’s put this in perspective. In 2007, according to Energy Department figures, the United States consumed about 21 million barrels of oil a day, nearly three times as much as China. Even more significant, we imported 13 million barrels every day, a vastly greater amount than China’s import tally.
So, although it is indeed true that Chinese and American consumers are competing for access to overseas supplies, thereby edging up prices, American consumption still sets the pace in international oil markets.

George Bush's laissez-faire dollar policy is why you're paying so much for gas - http://www.americablog.com/2008/04/george-bushs-weak-dollar-policy-is-wh...
Don't think the dollar's decline affects you since you don't go to Europe? Think Again. Chris posted earlier today about OPEC and the price of oil, and buried in his post was a fascinating quote from the head of OPEC:
"Each time the dollar falls one percent, the price of the barrel rises by $4, and of course vice versa"
The overall point is that the head of OPEC just said that George Bush and the Republicans' economic policy vis-a-vis destroying the dollar (they don't care if the value plummets because "it's the market's doing") has led to the majority of the oil price increase. I.e., you're paying more at the pump because of George Bush and the Republicans.
Republican 'Free market' stupidity has destroyed the value of the dollar. The dollar has fallen 30% versus the Euro since April 2003.

Brent Scowcroft Echoes Obama: We Need To Talk To Enemies - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/28/brent-scowcroft-echoes-ob_n_990...
Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, said on Monday that he agrees with the position, stated mainly by Sen. Barack Obama, that the U.S. would benefit from having direct talks with the leaders of its most distrusted adversaries.
"Absolutely," said Scowcroft, when asked by The Huffington Post whether he thought the next president should meet with the likes of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "It's hard to make things better if you don't talk."

World Food Riots: When The 'Free' Market Starves Many Millions - http://manifestojoestexasblues.blogspot.com/2008/04/world-food-riots-whe...
"Free" market dogma and stereotypes have long portrayed "socialism" and protectionism as ideologies that bring only poverty and hunger to nations. There is some modest historical evidence for that case. Yet now, after decades of globalization, neoliberalism, deregulation, tearing down trade barriers and such, world food prices are alarmingly inflated.
Food riots are erupting all over the developing world.

Bush's America: Middle Class Turning to Food Banks - http://www.progressivedailybeacon.com/?p=883
Flood said a particularly troubling trend was that more people are showing up at food banks who don't fit the usual profile of lower-income families trying to make ends meet. He said free groceries are now being sought by middle-class people who may have lost their jobs or experienced some other economic upheaval. "We're worried," Flood said. "We don't necessarily have the supply of food to handle this increase."
