Stanley Cup Finals! Open Thread
By John Amato Tuesday Jun 03, 2008 1:20pm
Monday's Red Wings/Penguins game was one of the greatest hockey games I've ever seen. Triple OT win for the Pens as Marc-Andre Fleury was "the savior" with 55 saves. Here's the always colorful Don Cherry with his analysis. Pittsburgh is really tough on their home ice so it should be another great game...(Yes, I post about sports once in a while.)

My Canada does not include Don Cherry
Oh jeez don't show Don Cherry!!! ... he's a complete tool.
STANLEY cup. Not Stanely...
But, Tiger Woods said nobody watches hockey.
The Penguins looked like PeeWees in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
(... and this is from Crosby's home town :)
Crosby can be amazing to watch.
Obama has put together a team to vet possible veeps for his ticket. Caroline Kennedy is one of the three on that vetting team.
Be careful, you don't want to invoke the wrath of Dr. Matt!
pissed off patricia @ 6:
But, is he rooting for the Red Wings or the Penguins?
What time does the game start?
Montreal's not in it anymore so I don't care.
Perpetually Disappointed @ 8:
I have no clue and I couldn't tell you the first thing about hockey (that is what this is about, right?) John has posted that this is about the Stanley Cup and an "open thread".
Like I said I do not know thing one about this sport, but the name "Penguins" is cute.
55 shots in 6 periods?
Uhhh...that ain't alot boys.
Orangutan. @ 9:
When the glow on Don Cherry's nose reaches full brightness.
Don Cherry is the definition of a douche bag.
pissed off patricia @ 11:
Hockey can be great when the teams are fast, talented and evenly matched.
And for this final: They are!
All I know about horkley I learned from the Onion:

P.S. GO RED WINGS!!!!!
P.S.S. I flew up to Detroit for Game 2 :)
I love visiting this blog because even when one of the most important primaries in history has wrapped up in a very historical fashion we get about 2 entries total, and then some mentions of the stanely(??) cup. I'm sure theres some coverage of the primaries that'd be interesting to read and comment on. Some here call it being balanced, maybe it is, but I just wish there was more primary news being posted! A lot is being said here on C&L by what's not being said.
Would like to see one of the original six win
Sid the Kid will have his time, perhaps next year
Wings will win , they're just too good altho' Pens have made it entertaining.
I pull for the hometown Philly Flyers.
Hockey is to sports what jazz is to music.
Take off you hosers..
Sorry, rushing so much info, I've been bad with my little typos...:-)
I really, really hope and pray the Wings finish this off tonight. Not just because I'm a lifelong Red Wings fan....I'm tired of drinking. I need a break too.

Ummmmm , I just checked weather.com. It's 93 degrees here (Savannah,Ga) , with a heat index of 103!!
And you guys are talking HOCKEY??????? Sheeeesh.........Shouldn't this season have ended a loooong time ago?
Naked
Detroit deserves the win. Penguins should win enough Stanley Cups in the next few years (as long as they don't completely self-destruct) but this is the Wings' year.
Liberal AND Proud @ 13:
...but were they hard shots?
btw: what the hell is wrong with Malkin???
OT, but thank the lord that someone supports and loves the Troops... http://rawstory.com/news/afp/Canada_s_parliament_votes_to_grant__0603200...
Woohoo Canada!!
After seeing the Jazz get beaten by the Lakers and with the Chicago Bears shooting themselves in the foot every couple of weeks, all my pro sports hopes are riding on the Penguins to win tonight and force game 7. Game 5 was amazing, I turned it on with about a minute to go and oh my god that was perfect.
Wuzup Hussein Dawk @ 28:
Everything!
Go curse someplace else...Thank you
JA
If you want to rephrase your thoughts go ahead.
I've never seen so many penalties called in overtime. 3 against the Red Wings in 3 overtime periods. You just never see that. The third penalty was justified but I really hate when a game is decided as such. The goalie interference concept really needs to be reassesed at season's end.
Well what game was that the other day when the winners dropped and broke the trophy?
My prediction: Wings 3- Pens 1
Yes that's right. Read it and weep.
Fredric L. Rice @ 32:
You don't have to watch --- you don't have to comment. You have an ignore button? Use it.

Progressosphere so far remains under Cone of Silence
And Go Pens.
Fredric L. Rice @ 32:
yr an stoopid lolz. n old, 2 prbly
Michael @ 33:
The Wings have been raped over and over with phantom goalie interference calls this post season. The refs did miss one legitimate call against the Preds then they went over board calling interference for even breathing on the netminder.
Professor Hussein Falken @ 27:
58 Shots actually, 55 saves. Goalies are in for the ENTIRE game, that's 5 20 min periods and some change, with the Wings knocking on the door for the majority of the OT periods. Amazing performance, that game was fun as sht to watch.
Fredric L. Rice @ 32:
Oh don't be so mean. Everyone needs and escape once in a while from the, well, just everything of the world. Jeez, I bet even you have something you do just for fun. If you don't you should because it might make you happier and you might sound less mean.
Fredric L. Rice @ 32:
Looks like someone got picked last for a few too many kickball games
eag @ 40:
Speak for yourself....I was at the Pub since 5:30 CT on Monday and by the 3 OT I taught myself to speak Chinese by drinking enough Labatt Blue.
Oops, make that "an escape"

Winter Soldiers Hit the Streets
by Dahr Jamail
SEATTLE - In a clear change of strategy to energize public antiwar sentiment, Iraq veterans led a determined demonstration of hundreds through the streets of downtown Seattle last Saturday, following regional Winter Soldier hearings at the Seattle Town Hall.
A larger Winter Soldier event occurred at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland from March 13 to March 16 earlier this year. But the strategy for those hearings appeared to be based on keeping the event from being directly affiliated with any demonstrations or antiwar activities in an attempt to reach a broader audience. Those hearings were closed to the public, and no demonstrations or other overtly public actions were tied to the event.
WONDER IF CHRIS MATTHEWS OR OLBERMAN WILL GIVE THIS MARCH OR IRAQ ANY AIR TIME NOW THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE THEIR NOMINEE..OR ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO HEAR THEIR ENDLESS ANALYSIS OF THE NOMINATION?
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 43:
now that sounds like a hell of a night. Do they watch hockey in china? I bet the announcing is fantastic
I guess this isn't the best thread to talk about nail polish colors and handbag purchases, huh?
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 39:
I do recall that in the Nashville series. If it's really that bad of a problem then extend the crease 3 inches. Problem solved. Yesterday Babcock commented that the NHL is always saying it want's more goals, but the 2 interference penalties in
overtime seems to be contradictive of that. I just want some freakin 5 on 5 hockey. Is that really too much to ask.
Fredric L. Rice @ 32:
"I got picked on in school so now I'm a rebellious little complainer of everyone who isn't currently reading the politico fearbook of the minute."
As a Sharks fan, I have to say GO PENS. Stevie Y was one of the few reasons to ever root for the Wings, and now that he's gone, I can't stand them. (And yes, it's because they kill us every playoff series.)
Michael @ 48:
At least no goals were scored on said interference penalties. HOWEVER, if the same had happened to ozzie, I'm sure Wings fans would have expected no less from the officials
Paul Stanley's jock-strap?
The Wings had on of the best road records...start time is 5pm pacific...Wings should finnish tonight...55 shots are a lot considering that by the time regulation is over the players are pretty much out of gas.
Michael @ 48:
This is the Bettman Hockey League. Until that azzclown is set packing, we are going to be stuck with league that is forced to abandon traditions, include cheerleaders, and have a revolving door of chaotic interpretations of the rules. I've been watching this league since the early 80s and I don't recognize it any longer. Fire Bettman
pissed off patricia @ 47:
If you start posting about Sex and the City I'm going to start a petition for your banning. ;-) ....just/teasing....
I agree John...awesome game the other night...there's nothing like Stanley Cup Hockey...even if the Avs aren't in it (ha!). Yes, my Colorado Avalanche got whacked by the Red Wings early on in the playoffs, but I can still appreciate a good playoff series. NHL players are, without question, the most physically fit and hardest working athletes in professional sports, and hockey is the fastest moving, most exciting game as well. If you haven't watched an NHL game for awhile, watch one again for the first time tonight at 8:00 ET on NBC (in HD if ya get it).
eag @ 40:
Actually L&P, a shot only counts if it was on net and the goalie is the one who blocked it, or it goes in. There were about half a dozen posts or crossbars hit as well as 31 blocked shots that don't count in the shot total, as well as numerous shots that go harmlessly by. So there were a lot more than 58 shots by Detroit in the game.
pissed off patricia @ 41:
He does do something for fun. He gets some smug satisfaction out of telling us that bread and circuses are an instrument of control. Well I've got news for you Frederic, Juvenal beat you to the punch by 2 millenia, and today's bread and circuses aren't an escape from poverty, poor health and injustice like in Rome, they're an escape from domestication. Sporting, exploring the outdoors, hobbies in general didn't come into being in their modern sense until men and women tied the knot in the modern liberal idealistic picket fence middle class world of generic consumerism and domestic captivity. First the escape was adventurism in strange lands, being it for Imperial or revolutionary interests (depending on your conscience), but more and more these passions have become sanitized and made innocuous through sports, hunting, fishing, camping. They are no longer forms of control like in Rome (and even Emperor Augustus loved the colisseum, the truest combination of lion and fox), they are merely symptoms of the decrepitude of Liberalism. Symbols writ large for why the Liberal experiment isn't exactly as perfect as we anticipated in the Enlightenment.
With that said, Hockey >>>> All other sports, especially American ones like basketball and football. Tiger Woods? I'll refer you to George Carlin's comments on watching golf (he compares it to flies fornicating, in more colourful terms). Go Swedes on the Wings ! Scandinavians FTW.
I know people are excited about the finals, blah blah blah. After I received my autographed Ales Hemsky jersey, I can't wait for the new season to begin!
The Red Wings blew it the last 13 seconds of that game. They were probably imagining hoisting the cup and instead jumped the shark. Let's hope they can close it tonight. It would be two historic nights in a row! Obama as the presumptive nominee for the Democrats and it'd be the first time the Stanley Cup would be awarded at the Mellon Arena.
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 54:
I couldn't agree more. As a Detriot fan in general the fact that the Wings/Pens game was scheduled the same night and time as the Pistons/Celtics is purely on Bettman. The NBA has their schedule set up before so the scheduling was nothing short of rediculous. And by the way, if I didn't have Versus I would have to wait until the finals to see a playoff game on a weeknight. We have the best playoff of any sport. It makes no sense that ESPN2 would rather show Poker than a playoff hockey game. And I place all of this squarely on the shoulders of Bettman. I look forward to seeing him get booed once again when the hands The Cup over to Lidstrom.
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 55:
Not to worry. I've never seen the tv show nor will I see the movie.
Michael @ 60:
Many, many, maaaaaaaany Detroit fans were hoping to close out the series on Monday so that someone could toss an octopus at Bettman. That would have been the greatest moment in Detroit Sports History.
Go Pens!!!!!!! I'm still trying to recover from Monday's game. It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh!!!!!!!
Octopi!!! Go RedWings!!!
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 62:
If you haven't seen the story of the kid who threw the octopus on the ice in game 4 go watch this video. The length these guys went to even get the octopus is amazing. Good video.

Just as watching Obama's speech claim the nomination, and the feeling that you were watching something special and historic, so was this hockey game. I have never watched hockey before but I could tell I was watching something special. If the P's or Obama end up winning their contests movies will surely be made.
Phleger has been removed from his parish by the Archbishop of Chicago.
Who else thinks that Fredric L. Rice got picked last all the time in gym class?
Tania @ 59:
Hate to rain on your parade, but if Pittsburgh wins, they'd have to go back to Detroit to win the Cup outright...
Michael @ 65:
Yeah, I saw it already, but thanks. There was a story in the Freep as well. Pretty cool little kid there.
nice to see the Pens make a series of it before they finally succumb. expect Detroit to take it at the Igloo tonight.
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 62:
It's my fault. During the Leafs/Canes series in 2002, at a game in Raleigh, I was in the concourse between periods and Bettman was walking around without any escort. I could have taken him out and saved the hockey world. I was surprised he was walking around unescorted, but I guess he didn't have to worry about anyone recognizing him there.
Doug @ 72:
Egads, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let an opportunity like that pass! I mean, that's almost like having the opportunity to run over Hitler in Austria in the early 1930s.
Do folks know about Muzzlewatch? They really cover stories about the middle east that never make their way through the MSM filtering system.

Well what game was that the other day when the winners dropped and broke the trophy?
That would be the Memorial Cup...
McCain Campaign,
The Red Winged Penguin is just another example of a great comeback from extinction after a devastating strike during the cup foreplay season a few years ago. As recently as a few months ago my opponent tagged these innocent fowl as “bitter”. And so these brave winged heroes will migrate into Detroit for a game 7 in what will be 95 deg. F. later this week. On ice. This my friends is proof of our parties policy success in the battle against global warming.
There will be no tie in the battle of the Red Winged Penguin. Over time only one victor will emerge to bring freedom and democracy to our friends and justice to our enemies.
10 Bonus McCain Campaign points.
There's nothing like Stanley Cup Hockey!!!
That game was GREAT the other night.
Let's hope the Wings loose so we have more great hockey :)
and then the hand shake.... kissing of the cup.
gets me all excited! what a high....
Justin @ 50:
Amen to that. As a Buffalo Sabres fan, I'd just like to MAKE the playoffs again before the end of the decade...
i'm a bitter avalanche fan that has been a pens fan, but less of one since they got crosby. i still like the pens, i just really don't like him for some reason. but i will put that aside if he can win 2 more games so i won't have to listen to deadwing fan crow all summer long.
Dr. Hussien Matt @ 62:
Let it get to Game 7 - and give every fan in attendance octopi to be thrown exclusively at Bettman!!!
Doug @ 72:
Kathleen @ 74:
Yeah, but who do they like for the cup?
Nadnerb in NC @ 80:
I suddenly got a mental picture of Bettman with an octopus stuck to his face. Sort of like that scene in the Alien movie.
Joel @ 69:
And I contend it's not going back to Detroit. It's ending in Pittsburgh tonight. Detroit isn't going to make the same mistake they did in the last game. You don't sit back on a one goal lead. Not in the "new" NHL.
It Was a great game hope the Penguins can pull it off and win the Cup! My team the Sharks went into quadruple overtime before being eliminated:>( GO PENGUINS!!!! :>)
