My latest post on the Obama election site's blog...

OK let us be clear. I support Senator Obama, but this is the reality of our situation.

In early 2001 before 9/11, Bush and Cheney started a program of illegal wiretapping.

The Administration had to tell Congress what they were doing so they went before the Intelligence Committee's of the House and the Senate in closed session.

Senators Feinstein and Rockeller and Reps. Pelosi and Haman were told about the programs.

These programs were and are illegal.

Now, there are some 40 lawsuits against the Telecom companies. These suits could include the aforementioned Democrat leaders.

So, the reasons we are concerned about Senator Obama's choice to support this Bill are as follows...

1. FISA is not broken, it needs no expansion or refinement.
2. In the words of Senator Russ Feingold, this "capitulation" is the most egregious subversion of the 4th Amendment we have ever faced.
3. Immunity for the Telecoms, the President, his staff et. al. and guilty Congressmen and Senators is not in the benefit of the American people, our system of Government, or the rule of law.
4. This Bill gives political cover to the unseemly actions of the aforementioned leaders of the House and Senate.
5. Senator Obama stated he would filibuster any such Immunity provision.
6. Senator Obama has many times said he would be an agent of change, and not practice "business as usual".
7. Senator Obama has made accountablity a keystone of his campaign for a new era of government.
8. Senator Obama has stressed his leadership during his campaign. This is a true test of that leadership. Does he provide cover for those who wish to weaken our Bill of Rights, or does he stand up for truth, justice and the American way?

He has promised the latter but is doing the former.

For this, we appeal with our hearts, our voices and our deepest feelings of patriotism and unity-Please Senator, take us to the promised land!!!!

Need I even mention the effect this decision has had on the progressive netroots movement that is helping to get him elected?

I want to be proud and confident again. I want a leader that I can trust. I want a country that is just and good to all it's citizens.

Thank you.

Let's look at the reason they used torture. They couldn't get confessions from innocent people. It's very simple. They do what they always do. Point the finger at someone else when they are the guilty ones. For me, the common sense evidence, is the ignoring of the PDBs.

I don't quite agree. They are guilty, Bush and Cheney, but to divert the attention away from them, they had to try to get confessions from the detainees. They don't have any respect for the law, but they don't want anyone looking into their illegal activities.

General_Rennenkampf's picture

Since this is an Open Thread, I think I'll state a couple of things about this idiocy that's ongoing with McPapen trying to get the approval of the minority of Protestant Fundies with the loudest voices. McPapen had best remember that he's playing with people that in the absence of the rest of the US would be indistinguishable from the Saudi Arabian state except that Christ's teachings would take the place of Al-Wahhab's. Those people need to have a careful watch kept on them, they're a danger not just to atheists and Muslims, but also to Jews and to the Christians they define as not-Christian. That a person running for leadership of 300 million should be so desperate for equivalents both theologically and morally of the Saudi leadership is unholy, and in this Christian's opinion, sinful. It would be nice if we could have a lesbian Nez Perce former Muslim who's converted back to her traditional beliefs and is a butch lesbian, at that as the President. We have not gotten there yet, and keeping an appeal to the Christian versions of the House of Saud and the Taliban won't ever get us there.

Iran threatens to shut down Persian Gulf oil lanes if attacked
sent by Nomen since 16 hours 35 minutes, published about 8 hours 18 minutes
The commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard said the government might shut down vital oil lanes through the Persian Gulf if the country were attacked by the United States or Israel.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari warned that if there were any confrontation over Iran's nuclear program, Tehran would try to damage Western economies by targeting oil. "Naturally every country under attack by an enemy uses all its capacity and opportunities to confront the enemy," Jafari said. "Iran will definitely act to impose control on the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz," through which 17 million barrels of oil passes each day.

"After this action, the oil price will rise very considerably and this is among the factors deterring the enemies," he said. Jafari also warned of possible reprisals against countries that allow the U.S. or Israel to use their territory or airspace to launch attacks against Iran.

That's exactly what would happen. If Iran is attacked by Israel, say your prayers boys, cuz it'll bring us to the situation facing Moscow in 1991. I know a good Greek prayer for the Christians here, and you might wanna realize that as weak as Iran seemingly is, the Army once failed to eliminate a Serbian army with no air cover, period.

Iran also has had years of observation. And remember one other thing: we may not have the troops for a ground war...that won't stop them from giving us one.

Iran also has a very sophisticated air defense system, courtesy of moscow, so "cakewalk" won't happen. we've sent over a million troops through the two active theatres with nothing to show for it and here come the third.

However, it will accomplish the boosh family dream, to financially decimate the lower classes.

@ CoIntelPro:
No, that's Greek. Originally the entire Christian world, including the Oriental Orthodox and the Nestorians spoke Greek, and Latin was seen as a tongue of barbarians. Then the Church of Rome received a major wank from having its doctrines spread by the barbarian Conquistadores.

If Bush invades Iran, he's just given the terrorists, who now include the Shia as well as the Sunni, a green light to travel along a road of death and even just kill Americans in the Zagros mountains. It would require three times the forces and the entire US military budget for this year just to occupy Iran, while we've still got to fight the Iraq and Afghanistan squabbles. The entire US budget to occupy Persia vs. getting the Hell out of there and letting the Middle Easterners live alone? I think I'd prefer the latter.

After eight years of neglect and denial, a proposal to rid the world of nuclear weapons sounds like progress.

you presume McC*nt actually thinks. with a campaign team consisting of lobbyists, I don't think that's the case.

It's obvious he doesn't think. If the standards applied to those scary Muslims in the Middle EastTM were applied to the Scary Christians in the SouthTM, you'd see very little difference. The South, bereft of the rest of the US would be a hellhole like the Saudi Arabian monarchy's created. So why in Hell would you talk to people who are the moral equivalent of the terrorists?

because of money and ambition and moral bankruptcy? just a guess!

Hell, even the Romans in the Imperial days wouldn't resort to some of the douchebaggery the GOP has these last 8 years, and McPapen promises little difference. Lest we forget that's the Rome razed entire cities to the ground and blazed an empire that originated on the Tiber to Iberia, Britain, the Rhine and the Danube, and the Mediterranean and North Africa. Those Romans were ruthless bastards, and they wouldn't do this shit. Hubris like this eventually destroys an empire, no matter how great it is.

It sounds great, until you realize that in some sense the prospect of MAD was the only thing that kept the US and USSR and PRC from ripping each other to shreds. Nukes, as bad as they are, have kept a peace the last 50 or so years that can't be denied. And we can't go back in time and destroy the Manhattan project, so...

thanks for the greek lesson

you left out the active uprising of the muslim world to actively engage the us in the oil countries. also, the 6000-mile missile capability of Iran can reach the oilfields in Iraq as well. The Iraq and Afghanistan 'squabbles' will be joined. Even combining the Australian and British forces, it will be Pyrrhic, if there is any victory at all. And it will all be funded with debt. How long is THAT supposed to last?

No one in power is thinking it through. The plans must be Chainey's and Lay's.

No-one in power ever thinks anything through, that's how WWI, WWII, the Taiping Rebellion, and the decision of the African powers to start the slave trade all ended up starting from. Humans aren't that smart of a species.

Ideals are great, yes. Ideals unrestrained by pragmatism result in horror and carnage, and that's as true of Oliver Cromwell's England as it is of Hong Xiuquan or the USSR. Unrestrained ideals do not lead to anything but trouble, in the long term. Too much restraint on ideals leads to stagnation and ultimately, decline. This isn't a world of black-and-white, easy choices the way the Bush Administration seems to think it is.

work beckons.

Is this part of a global plot against Santa, Christmas and Christianity?

The cowardice of NBC is amazing when responding to Gen Clarke's assertion that McCain's military experience or being a POW , doesn't make him " qualified " to be Pres. A claim McCain makes daily , as well as showing pics of him , as a POW in his campaign ads .

But it was predicable to say the least, M. Brzezinski cowardly avoided the issue directly , instead playing the same old canard , we'll how can obama kwitisze John McCain , " when he has no military experience ' .

A. First you (NBC) have to demonstrate how being POW or fighter pilot , gives you qualifications to be PRES. , which you conveniently RAN AWAY FROM , while pandering to McCain and the Right . Because if you cowards were serious and not afraid of the Right, you would AT LEAST talked about Clarke's comments DIRECTLY , instead of tap dancing around like little the insignificant , wanna be journalists you are .
B. And since you NEVER even brought it up , and just did a kabuki dance with blinders on , you CAN'T criticize OBAMA for not having military experience .

As a side notE , I noticed when NBC had COLONEL jack Jacobs on this weekend , NBC conveniently left out Col. and labled him ...JACK jACOBS RET .
rETIRED FROM WHAT , THE POST OFFICE . NOT so tricky attempt to hide the fact nbc was basically a propaganda mouth for the pentagon , during the run up to the illegal invasion of Iraq and after .
