Gallup Poll: Majority Worry McCain Would Be Too Much Like Bush
By Logan Murphy Monday Jun 30, 2008 4:00pmThe Villagers continue to defend John McCain's honor and cling to the notion that the Maverick is still alive, but Americans are clearly seeing through the spin. It's a sign that more people are paying attention to the truth about the aging Arizona Senator, and also shows how toxic the Bush/GOP brand has become.

"Not too concerned" + "Not concerned at all" = 30% . . SHOCKING!!!
No doubt in my mind that McCain would be worse the bush. He would not only continue the bush agenda, he would add his own flare to it. More tax cuts for oil company's, off shore drilling, more right wing supreme court judges, repeal of Roe v Wade, No equal pay for women and a endless war in the middle east. There will be nothing left of a middle class in this country if McCain gains the White House.
"... policies that are too similar..."
Even an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny bit like Bushmeat's policies is waaaay to much. (:>
I'm not sure I like the phrasing of the question. It assumes that everyone to whom the question is posed believes that being like Bush would be a bad thing. As such, it might skew the results, or be entirely unreliable.
We know, of course, that there are still 20-something percent of lunatics out there who believe that a third Bush term would be glorious, and I suppose that such might be born out by the 31% of people who answered either "Not too concerned" or "Not concerned at all."
However, how many people said something like, "Well, I'm concerned that he will be like Bush, but I think that's good."? How many people might have argued with the poll taker for another choice? And what did those people choose when the poll taker said something to the effect of Colbert's infamous, "I only have 'great' and 'greatest' as the choices."
The question, I think, would inevitably mix up people who desired McCain to be like Bush with those who were concerned that he would. Ultimately, then, I don't think that "concern" about McCain's being like Bush necessarily translates into not voting for McCain. I'm not sure what the question necessarily measures.
In any case, pushing the McSame meme does seem to be a good idea. It has entered into the meme pool enough for it to be the subject of a poll -- on our terms.
"...about the aging Arizona Senator,..."
nice bit of ageist sideswipe there.
mccain isn't pathetic due to his age, he's pathetic for being a political hack who's selling out his own set of ethics fo suck up votes from the fundie ultra right base.
Guess he's gonna keep building the farcical fence, hmmmm. Just like AZ. see http://cabdrollery.blogspot.com
What percentage of the population of this country owns the greatest percentage of the business stock? Betting its about 30%. Honestly, if any of us remaining 70% suddenly received a sizable ownership in the corporate sector, we would most likely find some justification to support the Republican candidate. Reminds me of the old joke.
A Socialist was standing on a soapbox speaking of the benefits of socialism. He says"
"If I have two house and you need one, I'd give it to you" He continues:
"If I had two cars and you needed one, I'd give it to you"
A guy in front, still confused by the concept, asks:
"So honestly, if you have two shirts and i needed one, you'd give it to me?"
The speaker on the soapbox says, much softer:
"No".
"Why" asked the confused man in front.
"Because I HAVE two shirts". said the speaker.
Realistically, we do not know exactly how we would react given other circumstances. Oh, we hope, but until it happens to us or we are tested, we won't ever really know.
sassafra @ 5:
But he is really, really old.
sassafra @ 5:
McCain is pathetic for the same reason Unka Ronny was: to have lived this long and learned so little. What's that old quote?
"If you're 20 and you're not a liberal, you have no heart, and if you're 30 and not a conservative, you've got no brains, but if you're over 40 and you're still a conservative, you're blind."
~~How does being a bad pilot make you a good president?~~
McCains record in the senate voting on bills concerning Budget, Spending and Taxes from 5/17/07 to 6/18/08. There were 51 bills that came to the floor for votes. McCain was a No Vote for 42 of those 51 votes. We have had a president who has been missing in action more the not for the last 71/2 years, and this looks like more of the same.
But...but He can't be like Bush. He's a maverick!
BC @ 11:
You do mean Maverick from the old tv show, a con man and a crook and a clown?
The real danger is that McCain will be too much like the Republican right. George W. Bush is irrelevant to the discussion, because the Republican right will have distanced itself from Bush's presidency by the time McCain is inaugurated.
McCain will be dealing with a Democratic Congress, if elected. If he insists on Republican priorities (more Cheney's than Bush's at present), he'll get nothing he wants. Illegal spying will end, regardless. Guantanamo will close, regardless. McCain will not be allowed to govern as a unitary executive, regardless. An anti-torture bill will be passed, and McCain will have to sign it or else abandon his long-standing position against torture. Iran will become a diplomatic question; there will be no attack on Iran unless McCain is willing to face immediate impeachment proceedings.
Robert Lockwood Mills @ 13:
I would not count on a Democratic congress to do nothing but cave to the president. Most of the congress we have now will be the same people in the next congress who have caved to bush on every major issue. If Democrats don't gain the white house, I'm afraid it will be more of the same.
This is what gives me a headache about America - A clear majority know McCain is "W" 2.0, yet he's still close to Obama in the polls. Same with Bush - 84% of America thinks he's sent us down the wrong track, but only 74% think he's a bad president for doing so. Either 10% of the US is Al-Qaeda and WANTS the country to fall apart or there's a lot of very, very stupid people out there who lack even the most elementary of reasoning skills.
The public knows:
Bush = Bad.
McCain = Bush.
But 10-20% still put these 2 together and get McCain = Good.
I hate this country sometimes.

Why wouldn't he be? He saw Bush got "elected" twice and the MSM treated that asshole with respect and turned a blind eye to his bullshit.
Could Americans be really that stupid and elect Bush-like McCain?
Find it hard to believe, but enough of you seem to live under Rocks
I find the headline a bit misleading. Looking at the numbers, 49% are 'very concerned', meaning that the other 50% are 'not very concerned'. Now I'm really depressed.
Commentator@15, This is the land of the stupid. We are #1 in stupid, we should have stupid on the damn flag, and lazy as well. People tell me all the time that they are just tooo busy living their lives to get involved with politics and how our government runs things. Too busy living your life? You have got to be fucking kidding me. Their is no excuse for willfull ignorance, and it is very expensive.
" In my lifetime we have gone from Eisenhower to george bush. If this is evolution, I believe in 12 years, we will be voting for plants."- Lewis Black. "Land of the free, home of the brave, and too damn stupid to keep it that way."-CEO
Exotic Blue Lensman @ 1:
Remember, Bush still has about 25-30% support? These are probably the same 30 %.
CEO,citizens,eyes,open @ 20:
I can't count the times I've been in a political conversation with someone who is bitching their head off about the state of the country and when I finally get a chance to try to push the conversation to the next level and discuss these issues in depth I get the blank stare and then a mumbled excuse about how they don't have time to keep up on these things. At that point I cut 'em off at the knees and bluntly say if they can't "keep up" with the issues they are casting their votes (if they voted) in an uninformed manner and contributing to the dismal state of affairs... therefore they are part of the cause of our misery and have no right to bitch.
I don't have many friends.
Begeezus, I am soooo sick of that face.
I think McCain was selected so that bush wouldn't have to suffer the "worst President ever" moniker into retirement.
Gretchen@22 We must have been talking to the same dip-shits, seeing that blank,"no data" stare makes me #1, wonder if they are on drugs, #2 wonder why the hell am I not on drugs! They are sure as hell not being good humans, let alone friends, but not to worry, I like you already. --CEO
I have just been advised that a Peter Hegseth with Vets for Freedom has equated ANYONE who is questioning McCain's leadership qualities as "far left" on an interview with MSNBC on Hardball. Unfortunately for his part, there are thousands of military families who are just doing that. I guess, in his mind, these people are just too far out there.
let me make this simple i am fxxking concerned....period
he is trying too hard not to resemble and/or be seen with bush
what that means to me is......he will have the same basic policy/behavior
otherwise why so sweaty about it.......i realize the poor bush approval rate
but i don't believe that's the reason he is avoiding bush and republican name
you can run mccain but you can't hide from the obvious
And this just in, 49% of Americans believe the sun will rise in the east tomorrow, ice is cold, black is darker than white, torture is inhumane and spending more money than you make leads to bankruptcy.
You go America. A country where less than half the people can recognize reality is better than what we've had for 7 years.
I'm glad we haven't been attacked on home soil for seven years, or at least semi erect
Mac @ 26:
What do you expect from a fascist Nazi? Where the hell is my Chinese made flag pin? I need to go out in public.
Attila the Appeaser, No Stomach for Kristol @ 24:
Here Here ,
From maverick to hay burner , just goes to show us how many people should be put out to pasture .
I'm beginning to worry that Obama is also adopting Bush's perspectives. I've become pretty embivalent about voting for him of late.
They are a lot alike but I can think of two ways they are different.
One of them was a real fighter pilot. One of them is a real coward.
republican = insanity!
Karen @ 4:
i totally agree. as a vehement and proud sufferer of bush derangement syndrome, even i think the question was poorly phrased. but the results gladden me nonetheless.
Thank God, Sen. McBush has missed more votes in the Senate because he is out running around in Cindy's private jet trying to be president. That really works in our favor, the less he votes the better for America.
John, change your Depends and STFU. We will not allow another Bush to further ruin our country. Our country has been ruined by the bush crime family and nobody will be able to put us all back together again. What a shame for our kids.
all this shows is that the kool-aid drinkers have the 51% they need to take it in November
Gretchen @ 22:
!!!!!!! yeah, yeah! I hear tumbleweeds when I try to do the same thing. And always the line "I don't have time to think about it", which ironically follows an energetic lead into the conversation.
