Democratic Strategy: Strength Through Weakness
By SilentPatriot Thursday Jul 10, 2008 4:50pmAccording to Glenn, and anyone who follows American politics, this is the Democrats' grand strategy: Give Bush everyone he wants so that the Republicans can't attack them as weak and spineless. How's that working out so far?
Historians writing about the Bush era were given a great gift yesterday -- an iconic headline that explains so much of what has happened in this country over the last seven years:
Their rationale for doing that is that it prevents the Republicans from depicting them as "weak," because nothing exudes strength like bowing. Here's more evidence of the brilliance of the Democratic strategy to show how "strong" and "tough" they are by bowing to Bush and all of his demands, from this morning's New York Times article by Eric Lichtblau:
WASHINGTON — The Senate gave final approval on Wednesday to a major expansion of the government's surveillance powers, handing President Bush one more victory in a series of hard-fought clashes with Democrats over national security issues...
There comes a point when you have to wonder whether or not the Democrats actually support some of these disastrous bills they help usher through Congress. President Bush is the most unpopular President since the advent of polling, yet time after time they cave and give in to every one of his demands, despite overwhelming opposition to the policies he seeks. Save for the few in Congress who actually vote against these monstrosities, it's hard to deny that the majority of them actually think things like telecom immunity are a bad idea. After all, as we learned last week, it pays off.

OK, god damn it. It is time to break out the old D.O.I. and read that fucker again.
News FLASH!!! The Democrats are bought and sold just like the Republicans ... ... ...
The post-election period will repeat history as the two-party plutocracy in service of the Upper Class uses its muscle to prevent true and meaningful systemic changes to alleviate the woes of most Americans. Even with Barack Obama as president.
So what is the difference again between the republicans and all but a very few Democrats (none of which are running for president)??
Are you sure they're not afraid of a(nother) false flag operation?
it's almost as though there were a conspiracy between the lazy and spineless democrats and the corrupt and evil republicans to create a patrician class!
...now where did I put my tinfoil hat again?
All of us need to be running against them as Independents. We need to take what Cindy Sheehan is doing against Pelosi and go VIRAL with it.
Even if none of us were to win, I'm sure we'd give them all one hell of a run in the various debates in the districts.
I've been there. I've done it. It's no big deal.
Call your local Registrar of Voters first thing Monday morning and have all the paperwork sent to you. Raise the money for the filing in lieu of thousands of signatures. Have a freakin' yard sale. What ever it takes. Figure it out.
This is a really bold step we need to take. Who better to represent the people then the people themselves?
I don't know about you guys (well, yeah, actually I do...), but I'm freakin' tired of being ignored, aren't you??
Spineless Bastards! Told you they'd kiss yer ass Georgie, told ya!!!
Yeah, that was a brutal, but accurate headline.
I guess Bush has his legacy after all. A major victory in the War on Congress.
The analysis becomes a bit easier when you internalize the fact that the Reps and the Dems are not opposing factions at all, they are merely different departments of the same machine.
Makes you think they are all owned by the same company, attend the same briefing on how their handlers want them to vote on each issue of the day. ie; the bill to protect the environment can't possibly win, so you that want to look good go ahead and vote for it. The sacking of the constitution, you may get thrown out of office, but we can't back off now that we have purchased you, you have to vote for it or we have you disappear.
Here's another plausible scenario: Everyone from his the shrink who wrote Bush's biography (Justin A Frank, M.D.) to now each and every one of us absolutely knows for certain that Bush is a very mentally ill individual. We've seen his ridiculous bully sessions and his egomaniacal rants often scratching our heads wondering if he truly does live in his own "personal bubble world". This fact is being confirmed with each passing day as more people listen to his embarrassingly uninformed, uneducated, and totally egocentric babble. In fact, the GOP recently told him that he didn't need to attend their convention since so many of his own are horrified by his antics.
Could it be that Congress at this critical time in this lame duck's near departure from being minutes away from pushing the red button KNOW that pinning him into a corner from which there is no perceived exit (Just like his big buddy and prime sycophant KKKarl) may very well push him into finally "proving to the world how powerful he is" by taking another criminal action against Iran? This would be devastating particularly at this point in his exit from office. He still has several months time to inflict even more damage on this country and the rest of the world before leaving office.
Could it be that they've seen the profound psychiatric illness firsthand? Could it be that they're just holding their collective breath, as is every American, that Inauguration Day will magically appear and we can all give him the royal finger on the way out of Dodge?
This is becoming more a probability with each passing day. This one president has done more damage to this country than all of his predecessors combined. We only have 6 months left to hold our breaths before this clown disappears and goes into hiding in Paraguay.
One has to wonder if Congress isn't actually using very sound judgment in giving him his way on FISA. They know the consequences of a "cornered animal". They know that there's still plenty more damage which this lameduck can do to this country before he exits stage reich.
Totally awful.
I haven't ruled out the CYA explanation. Too many Dems were briefed, so instead of flushing 20 of them (and giving the networks and the right wing a "bipartisan corruption" story - like Abramoff) the Dems decided to go this route. Dems are a bunch of damn bed-wetters when it comes to campaigning on the issue of national security.
osiris @ 12:
Okay, I could see that, but why didn't congress just appoint him eternal ruler of North Crawford, Texas; or vote to give him a shiny new marble to play with?
If it is in fact a "strategy", it a completely moronic one, but I don't really expect much from the current Democratic "leaders" in Congress...
Now I understand Obama's strategy!
Hmm, looks like one more reason to vote libertarian.
Will someone please add the American Brain Cell to the endangered species list?
alzuben @ 6:
The patrician class already exists, now they're just cementing it with laws. Who are these people if not aristocrats?
yes, I think it is safe to say that if Bush is impeached he will launch all nuclear missles and destroy the planet.
....it's gad's will.
Old Billy Hussein @ 13:
Bingo. Therefore, impeachment "off the table."
Yes, I will be donating to the ACLU.
Obama apoloigists: "We think that Obama's decision on FISA was wrong, but we still support him."
Are the Obama supporters braindead? Please, quit fainting over this guy and realize he is just another political hack.
Edwin Hussein @ 18:
of course it already exists....but I would hardly call them 'aristocrats'. I would say 'Barbarians draped in gold' would be more accurate.
So, let's all toast the cowardly sheep who now so willingly roll over and sacrifice their freedoms and rights in the name of more weekend sales!
alzuben @ 6:
The tin foil nutball in me considers the possibility that the global crash is a form of pigman bailout - for those select pigmen who, privy to the knowledge that this is exactly what the fed intended, prepositioned massively short. A $7 trillion global wealth transfer as the top sucks from the bottom to save itself.
The Democrats are like the loser who keeps getting beat up by bullies, then decides to join a gym, take martial arts classes, make friends with other victims, and then when they're bulked up and strong, they continue to allow themselves to be beaten up by the bully.
While this FISA capitulation infuriates me as an American, that is very pre-9/11 thinking. We don't live in America anymore. Instead, we live in a Balkanized nation where every person has to fight for themselves and doesn't have to fight for anyone else, where the government is presumed to be correct, and where no advantage of power can be given up. So the Dems didn't capitulate, really. Figuring they'll have the White House and both houses of Congress in six months, they just gave themselves greater power. Now, for once, we can be the people spying on the opposite political party, imprisoning them, and making our own laws. Sure, this might lead to executions in football stadiums, but it'll be the Republicans being executed. At least at first.
Here's one Democrat who is bucking the "Lets Be Weak Democrats Strategy"
An email from Chris Dodd that I received today:
Yesterday was a sad day for the United States Senate.
It is my hope that the courts will undo the damage done to the Constitution.
But let us stand tall, knowing that by working together we were able to make wiretapping and retroactive immunity part of the national discourse these last number of months.
We came together – all of you, Senator Feingold, bloggers like Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald, organizations like the EFF and ACLU, and untold hundreds of thousands of Americans who simply wanted to make sure that this one, last insult did not happen with ease.
I'm sorry we weren't successful.
I just hope I'm lucky enough to have you by my side in the next fight, whatever that may be.
Thanks for all you've done.
Chris Dodd
Conservatives and liberals are all part of the same plutocracy. The media puts on a political sideshow to keep up the illusion of democracy on the sheeple.
It's called bribery. Who do you think they were wiretapping? Congress.
The lesser of two evils.
Anyone but McCain.
A bad Dem is always better than a Repub.
Vote Obama.
angry young man @ 26:
Anarchy. That is what I suspect you are saying. I believe that we might be looking at French-type solution, although I am not calling for that.
You might want to include Tony Auth's cartoon for today in this.

ranch111 @ 22:
So what do you suggest? Idaho militia?
And Chris Dodd is the balls.
That headline should read "Senate Bends Over For Bush, Approves Surveillance Bill".
I can't overstate my dissapointment with the spineless, gutless Dems. Good for nothing, entrenched, DC crowd, that obviously could CARE LESS about the rest of the American people.
If it were up to me, I'd throw them all out.
Who are these people? That's an easy one - they are facists!
Both parties sold our government to the corporations a long time ago and George Bush along with his Republicans and his Democrats have now cemented their power over us. I don't think all that Hope and Change BS will work out very well for 'we the people' next go around either. At least we'll have a smooth talker. Hey, that's kind of an improvement, right?
Edwin Hussein @ 18:
Something to consider. If I remember right there are still some missing nukes. I think there may have been some very serious threats from the administration.
They are well paid and well cared for. It's obviously working very well for them. Time to vote for another pay raise.
We were duped in 06. They aren't doing anything except protecting their own interests and bank accounts.
W may well have some problem from a suite of 'fragile X' gene problems such as Aspergers or Autism. I researched it months ago and did a piece on it but I flatly don't give a shit if anyone here reads my blog.
That aside, there are many incidents in his past that point to Aspergers from his messy youth to his disruptive behavior in Harvard Biz school classes to strange attempts to aggravate his parents in Kennebunk by slowly pedaling a bicycle in front of their car. Babs egg may have been bad when Poppy knocked her up for the first born and little was known about this in the mid 1940s.
They just had a weird kid and organized family life to cover it up and overcompensate. He may well be bat shit crazy and Congress may well know this and all are walking on eggshells until the little wreck trots off to Paraguay.
Google 'Fragile X' and dig a bit into the various behavior outcomes and it may look very familiar.
It all comes down to the fact that it is really our fault. We voted for them, we kept them in office. IF we as Americans had some balls we would throw every single darn one of them out in the cold and start all over. There is not excuse for them to vote overwhelmingly to approve the disastrous things bush wants.
And all the flaming the slurring the lying by the good old boy blogs we see where obama is worst than any candidate, he broke his promise about the FISA bill. Is he next going to approve offshore drilling. He doesn't want to approve a summer holiday for gas taxes saying he is going to have an investigation of the oil company. Hell we all know how far that will get...LOOK AT ROVE AS AN EXAMPLE...THUMBING HIS NOSE AND LEAVING THE COUNTRY.
Bush is also another word for pubic hair.
ranch111 @ 22:
Good point. His letter regarding his FISA stance was wishy washy to say the least. What is the alternative though? Grandpa who can't remember when he had his last affair or if he changed his underwear when he woke up this morning? I am all for more than two parties, but just don't see it happening. Sad.
Ironically, I've just found out that a Zogby poll in Arizona (my home) shows Barack Obama 3 points ahead of John McCain. Arizona, of course, is John McCain's home state. This jives with what I'm hearing here in the westside Phoenix area; former McCain loyalists are simply fed up with his self-contradictions.
In light of this, it's just incomprehensible to me that these spineless Dums act the way they do. I realize that they( Dums and Pigs) are different factions of wealthy capitalists, but WTF?
Again I ask:
Is C&L doing any coverage of the Green Party's National Convention, which is happening RIGHT NOW in Chicago?
Well, obviously not. Look. You can't complain about the Democrats and refuse to look at the alternatives that are there. Yes, there is a specific effort to marginalize third parties, but when progressives allow them to be marginalized, you get what you deserve.
People come to C&L because they don't trust mainstream press, right? Politically, t's the same concept. You also have to take the initiative and support non-corporate politics. You can make the "pragmatic" argument that Green candidates can't win. But look what this pragmatism has really gotten us. The same old stuff, time after time. But Greens are actually are winning at the local level and those places that have Greens in office have not burned to the ground or experienced any pestilence. We would have heard about that.
It's funny, a friend of mine who kept insisting that Obama's a Muslim, is actually relieved that he's only another corporate clown. We need to set the bar higher, folks.
ranch111 @ 22:
AND we now see that person so flamed so lied about, Hillary Clinton voted against the bill. What does that tell you...the viagra poppers and the childrens cult pushed the wrong candidate.
I hate John McCain, but at least he was smart enough to be absent during this vote. Again, Bob Barr is starting to look pretty good at this point.
L.A. Confidential @ 24:
who would be the first in a position to sell short and profit heavily from a downward turning stock market and a weakening dollar? It sure wouldn't be harry homeowner clacking away at Scottrade. So, while I would say there isn't solid evidence of manipulation at this point, there is certainly motive and opportunity.
now perhaps if you wanted to prove a pattern of behavior, I might look to his father's presidency and the economic volatility from the late 80s. Are there any similarities? Could it be proven that the current mortgage crisis is in some way similar to the savings and loan scandals? Can we name our modern Keating 5?
Personally, I believe that even if you could make a convincing argument, we would all be long dead before anybody even got around to discussing it.
Stuart Bedasso @ 46:
Personally, I have voted Green, Socialist and independent before. But not when there could be up to four SCOTUS seats up for grabs.
This is simple. The Dems are going to win. They will, therefore, inherit all the powers they are granting the Bush administration and in the process will curry favor with the real power. I think we can all admit, now that Congress has no power to even get Karl Rove to testify and the president may break the law with impunity until the Congress can get around to tailoring the law to his actions retroactively, that we have a puppet government. I have been saying this for like three years now. We need to admit it. We're working our way down the slippery slope that starts with benevolent dictatorship and ends who knows where.
eric @ 43:
I think "merkin" is more aplicable in this situation, he's a fake beard covering for the real genital....Cheney.
We keep hearing how smart Obama is but if he's not honest and true to his convictions, he's not smart enough. And we keep hearing that he is a Constitutional scholar but obviously not scholarly enough to know this FISA bill craps all over the Constitution. We are so screwed.
"There comes a point when you have to wonder whether or not the
Democrats actually support some of these disastrous bills they help
usher through Congress."
Come on! What's to wonder? The rubber hits the road when these clowns cast
their votes, right? If you don't understand this, then you are a sucker.
Want to stop the Democrats' spineless ways? STOP VOTING DEMOCRATIC!!!!
(I have -- making exception only for time-proven progressives, like Oakland's
Congresswoman Barbara Lee.) By the way, I will NOT be voting Obama
this year. He is just another ambitious Democrat and will sell us down
the river -- just like he did on this FISA bill.
Here's a cardinal rule for voting: Don't forget promises; don't
forgive broken promises; and don't let them triangulate you. Stick by
your politics or you will truly deserve the bad politics you enabled
through stupid compromises. The reason so many Democrats voted for
this absolutely abominable FISA legislation is that they observe none
of these rules -- and neither do the voters who put them into office.
So this November when I vote for Ralph Nader -- and you all accuse me
of helping put John McCain in the White House -- I will simply reply
(as I have always done): "I voted to put Ralph Nader in the White
House because Clinton/Gore/Obama are a bunch of side-winding
triangulators, and they deserve defeat for their thousand-and-one
Faustian compromises."
If enough of us stuck by our guns, then maybe those weak-kneed
Democrats (Obama, Pelosi, Schumer, Feinstein, Reid, etc. etc. etc!!)
would get the message that they will lose their base big-time by
supporting such unholy compromises with the degenerates in the White
House. The GOP base, and the party it controls, seems to understand
this principle. Why don't progressives get it?

heretic @ 51:
...well, for the Romans, that meant the rise of Christianity!
heretic @ 51:
Amen, M. Heretic. You are dead right -- which means we are all dead!
Sen. Barack Hussein Obama gets a free pass from this site. You imply that it is not only acceptable but indeed desirable to bamboozle people into believing that Obama's opinions represent the opinions of the majority -- or even a plurality -- is no different from implying that all it takes to solve our social woes are shotgun marriages, heavy-handed divorce laws, and a return to some mythical 1950s Shangri-la. Both statements are ludicrous. As everyone knows, anyone who takes Obama's feebleminded refrains seriously has obviously not spent much time around improvident charlatans. What you might not know, however, is that detestable and shrewish, his homilies resemble a dilapidated shed. Kick in the door and the whole rotten structure will collapse, proving my claim that what we have been imparting to Obama -- or what he has been eliciting from us -- is a half-submerged, barely intended logic, contaminated by wishes and tendencies we prefer not to acknowledge.
Sen. Barack Hussein Obama; here comes the truth train! Some background is in order: If I said that Obama understands the difference between civilization and savagery, I'd be a liar. But I'd be being thoroughly honest if I said that I feel that writing this letter is like celestial navigation. Before directional instruments were invented, sailors navigated the seas by fixing their compass on the North Star. However, if Obama were to trick them into fixing their compass on the wrong star they'd soon be so off-course that they'd actually be willing to help him eavesdrop on all sorts of private conversations. {FISA}
The sun has never shone on a more oppressive and ignorant person than Barack Hussein Obama. First, the misinformation: Obama suggests that the media should "create" news rather than report it. Where the heck did he come up with that? I'll tell you what I think the answer is. I can't prove it, but if I'm correct, events soon will prove me right. I think that all he really wants is to hang onto the perks he's getting from the system. That's all he really cares about. I once overheard him say something in one of the debates that was quite astonishing. Are you strapped in? He said that everything he says is entirely and totally true. Can you believe that? At least his statement made me realize that his gofers are merely ciphers. Obama is the one who decides whether or not to convert our children to cultural zombies in a mass of unthinking and easily herded proletarian cattle. Obama is the one who gives out the orders to exhibit cruelty to animals. And Obama is the one trying to conceal how his grand plan is to inflict untold misery, suffering, and distress. I'm sure Mao Tse Tung would approve. In any case, it is not news that Obama makes no sense at all. What speaks volumes, though, is that my love for people necessitates that I unmask his true face and intentions in regard to favoritism. Yes, I face opposition from Obama. However, this is not a reason to quit but to strive harder.
here is the Democratic political strategy in a nutshell:
we all know that mcC*nt was never going to be a serious candidate.
we are supposed to consider Barack Obama after he
-votes for FISA
-supports 'states rights'
-opposes women's right to choose
-refuses to oust LIEberman once Obama became the leader of the Democratic Party
eric @ 43:
Hey now. I like my pubic hair. I don't like George W. Bush
The dems must be Leninists.
That is the only fucking thing that makes any fucking sense at all.
Let the reptiles destroy and ruin everything completely and then they'll pick up the pieces?
Is that their strategy?
obama is simply a stop gap measure until the next election.

alzuben @ 61:
Just like Democrats being given the House and Senate by the voters in 2006. They have been a stop gap for what? Giving more to the Republicans than even the Republicans have asked for.
I'm a voter! I vote local, county, state and national. I haven't missed a presidential vote since 1968, my first year to vote. I'm now leaning toward not voting in Nov. I know I cannot vote for McCrazy and beginning to believe that I cannot vote for Obama with a clear conscience and I refuse to hold my nose to vote ever again. I fully understand the perils concerning the Supreme Court but we should have impeached 5 of those bastards in 2000 when they overstepped their authority and destroyed this country with a lunatic. Maybe we need to hit rock bottom before the people pick up those pitchforks and head to Washington to clear out the trash and take our country back.
Hasn't it gotten through to you yet? Haven't you been watching? The Democratic party and the Republican party are but two sides of the same coin. They are both working towards the same things. They don't care about "we the people" at all. They are working for their real masters: the Corporatocracy. How many ways do they have to slap us all in the face before it becomes completely transparent that their goals and the peoples goals are no where near the same?

well, at least in theory if the Republicans still controlled both houses the abuses would be greater. The democrats aren't going to lift a finger as long as concepts like "accoutnability" and "rule of law" are considered "fringe lefty" lunacy.

LIEberman and Sen Obama are old pals. I'm surprised he doesn't ask him to run as his VP.
Speaking of "merkins".... the train of thought led me to a darkly hilarious Peter Sellers movie in which he played, among others, President Merkin Muffley. However, Preznit Boosh is not Merkin Muffley. No, W is looking more and more like General Jack D. Ripper.
"I can no longer sit back and allow terrorist infiltration, terrorist indoctrination, terrorist subversion, and the international terrorist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids."
....and later, in the war room....
"The duty officer asked President Bush to confirm the fact the he had issued the go code and he said, 'Yes gentlemen, they are on their way in and no one can bring them back. For the sake of our country and our way of life, I suggest you get the rest of SAC in after them, otherwise we will be totally destroyed by terrorist retaliation. My boys will give you the best kind of start, fourteen hundred megatons worth, and you sure as hell won't stop them now. So let's get going. There's no other choice. God willing, we will prevail in peace and freedom from fear and in true health through the purity and essence of our natural fluids. God bless you all.' Then he hung up."
I can easily see KKKarl Rove as Dr. Strangelove. "Mein Fuhrer! I can valk!"

vote a write-in character...even if it is one of your neighbors. Pick somebody you have known and respected and write them in. You will feel infinitely better than having not voted at all...and for once in your life you will truly be voting for somebody you believe should be leading us.
Democrats have used this excuse of weakness first saying they didn't want to go against a popular President. That excuse is long gone (it was a lie anyway). The politicians have destroyed the US Federal constitution and are hoping to lay the blame on the partner George Walker Bush. The sham should have been over with the 2006 election but there are always new young voters to exploit.
hmoore @ 69:

Once again these two useless parties have made us think that we have to hold our nose as we pull the lever. You wanna unite congress? You want these fools to start acting in the best interest of the american people? Vote Bob Barr into the White House. If they start seeing american voters choosing a candidate who wants to restore the constitution they'll snap to and follow suit. Thats the only way.
Vote for Bob Barr and this kinda stuff wouldn't happen. He'd have vetoed this in a heartbeat.
If those who supported the FISA bill received an average of $8,359 from the telecoms, seems to me it makes GOOD sense for citizens to reward those who voted against it by donating money to them for debt reduction or campaign financing.
I wonder what the figures are for citizen donations to those who voted against it? Anybody know?

Excellent point. As Gore Vidal once observed, there are very few differences between the two major parties in this country, as one is the extreme right wing while the other is the right wing.

Ok, maybe the Democrats bowed to Bush on FISA because they fear being seen as 'weak.' I doubt it. I think the more likely (and troubling) answer is that the Democrats AGREE with Bush on FISA and other issues. The rising fascist movement in American politics isn't a purely Republican thing; the Democrats have been in control on Congress since 2006 and they have yet to do ANYTHING to counter Bush's powers or to uphold their SWORN DUTY to protect the Constitution.
Don't kid yourselves, folks: the Democrats aren't going to save us. They are part of the problem. And, sadly, Obama is showing himself to be the wrong Democratic candidate. His flip-flop on campaign money is minor compared to his flip-flop on the FISA bill. I'll still vote for him in November, but only because McCain is an even worse choice.
But I predict that an Obama presidency won't do much to fix or reverse the last 8 years of rising fascism. If anything, it'll just show that fascism is truly a bipartisan ideology.
Oh, well--America was a great thing while it lasted (just over 200 years by my count).
alzuben @ 70:
The thing is, for those of us who are old enough to have voted in 1968 and always been politically active, we lived through some very interesting and tough times but never before have I felt that America was totally lost like I do now. I never doubted that WE could change things. Now, however, thanks to the media and their corporate masters and that special class of people we call politicians, we are no longer anything more than rats in their maze being manipulated for their profit. The rule of law, the truth, the Constitution, habeas corpus, the Geneva Conventions are all now viewed as just quaint notions. We are now a country without a core. No election is going to change anything in this country. The one thing we can be sure of is that no government has ever given their excessive power back once attained.
The Dimocrats were bowing but not scraping?
Not even scraping the barnacles of boosh's dingy?

I donated to the ACLU again here now on a monthly basis. I may have to get my money back from Obama to make the payments. This to help in my tiny way in overturning this hideous crime of a bill.
Glenn Greenwald was on NPR last night with Katrina vanden Heuvel. Two of my favorite people when it comes to rational political thinking.
Katrina is going a little soft on Obama.
Jonathan Turley who never pulls a punch and rounds out my top three described the FISA situation most poignantly.
I'll paraphrase:
It is the Congress conspiring with the Executive to cover up a series of crimes.
Multiple felonies by George Bush being covered up in plain view.
We don't have a country.
We have mafioso for an executive and their henchmen in congress.
There is only a brave few.
Obama fell in with the wrong crowd.
Sometimes I think most Democrats in Congress are more afraid of responsibility than anything else. Believing in things and taking stands means taking responsibility, and there is little evidence that Democrats are willing to step up.
If there were another major terrorist attack on US soil and the Dems could be certain they wouldn't be blamed...I doubt if most of them would really care. Sure, if it killed a family member or damaged personal property, they'd probably be willing to give Bush permission to start WWIII, but politically speaking, they'd be fine.
I don't do bowing.
Yep: Giving in to the Republicans works.
Just ask President Bush. D-Texas. :(
#2, 3 & 6 (among others) are correct: It's called a RULING CLASS for a reason!
They rule the peasants and pretend to care what we think (briefly) every election cycle before sticking it to us again. They want an all-powerful fascist juggernaut of a gov't. to keep the restive populace in line (& they've got the MSM to help enable that) and define every "problem" in a way that guarantees their own intere$t$.
We can't have national health care like every other industrialized society, too expensive! But we can invade countries thousands of miles away and slaughter millions and it's noble and brave. We can shred the constitution, bail out the big guys and give no-bid contracts to our Halliburton buddies . . . but Pelosi says "impeachment is off the table." You get the idea.
And Obama's already signaled to the ruling class that he won't be rocking the boat too much. Voting won't change anything, the only thing that could is a revolution, and the 'Murikan people are currently too passive and hypnotized by the teevee & high tech. Expect a change when the shit really hits the fan. In 1 year? 5? 10? Ten's the high end of my estimate . . .
What were they supposed to do? Pass something the president would veto and lose the election in November. What Republicans salivate over is an attack on this soil and no new FISA law. They would keep the presidency and gain majorities in both houses.
The truth is Democrats are in the majority, but with 51 in the Senate (including Joe) they are weak.
This isn't a sprint, but a marathon. To make the change we all want we need 60 Democrats in the Senate and 279 in the House and a Democrat as president. I can see why some strategists thought it better to stay in the minority in '06; Democrats now get blamed for everything because they are 'the majority'.
The Democratic Party makes pond scum seem brilliant in comparison. I have no doubt pond scum could beat your typical Dem strategist in any strategic game.
What the Democrats desperately need to stop doing is allowing the GOP do to whatever the hell they want and when things go wrong, point and say 'see? its their fault'
if Pelosi wanted the democrats to be a hero to the american people they wouldve impeached bush by now. but she just wants to play it safe and be nice...whats the approval rating for congress right now?
Ponder that, would you?
and what happened after bush got his FISA way............he immediately called the dems the cause of the high gas prices and called for drilling off the coasts.
it would be hilarious if it were a dark comedy, but its pathetic when REAL. this is scary people. bush and his ilk seem all to willing to drive us all into oblivion.
this is total bullcrap. the dems are really starting to piss me off too. who wants to ride a spineless horse???? anyone ?? anyone??? it makes for a real short and anxiety ridden ride.
obama projected strength and intelligence, but now he has made 1 big mistake. he gets one big one and that's IT.
the media at the meantime seem to be building up mcinsane and tearing obama into shreds.
if you didn't think fascism before ...you might want to start considering it....it would be the only explanation of a mcinsane win. because the guy is bonkers...just like bush.
Robert59
The Democrats would have won landslide victories in November if they'd voted against the FISA bill, win or lose. But instead, they supported Bush's unconstitutional actions and shafted the Constitution.
As a result, Obama in particular is losing much of the support he had in the primary.
Robert59 @ 93:
Let the Felon Bush veto a law that doesn't let his buddies at AT&T off the hook (pun intended).
None of this is about the national security. It is about getting the telecoms who got huge surveillance contracts for illegal actions immunity.
If Bush would have followed FISA in the first place it would not have been necessary.
Not following FISA is a felony which they have committed many times over. He believes he is above the law.
The Democrats have proved him right.
The Democrats will lose the election because they are groveling at the feet of the reptiles.
I can't understand this except to say that the Democrats are reptiles themselves.
These people are all fascists.
and BTW... what happened to all the people who did business with jack abramov.....i'm sure they were crooked..why isn't the press interested??
why are these crooks free and moving about...are we the USSR now
america is indeed on the verge of of splintering under the weight of so much corruption and pending economic collapse.
oh really @ 89:
i think they just wanted the job because they think its a free ride and a boost to their ego.

It is a free ride to lobbying riches. Once they leave.
David Hill @ 95:
Oh, it's much worse than that. They are using the retarded strategy of having a majority voting with the Repubs. Then when they try to point to the Repubs and say it's their fault, they are left looking like gullible fools when anyone responds: "What the hell are you Dem congresscritters complaining about the Repubs for? Most of you are voting for the same Bush bills, idiots."
if i were a bush fan i would have to laugh at how bush played them. did you seee the video of him accusing the dems today and and painting the picture of drilling for oil.
i would say GENIUS....however it's not even close to genius...it's jsut the the dems have lowered the bar so low that he can actually DO that. it's pathetic...you could actually see the smirk on bushes face when he did it. he was very conscious of it. fully conscious and VICTORIOUS..over who??? us! the losers.
thank you dems ... for making us losers!
Michael @ 48:
he's absent during every vote. the guy hasn't been voting at all. and yet he gets a pass, and still gets paid.
the media love them some old dumb man.
gee i think i'll try that on monday. i'll just not go to work and then show up for my check.
Just read the newsweek article about Obama.
Obama dropped from a 15 point lead to a 3 point lead after he started pandering to the 30% far-right crowd? What a friggin' idiot. The idiot doesn't deserve to win. I had been looking at CNN polls where he went from 4 to 6% lead. But this is much more damning.
Otay @ 106:
when people really get wise to this one speach wonder ,he wont need a stadieum in denver to speak in a telaphone booth in podunk ohio will do!
They bowed down? They bent over with their mouths wide open!
Following the advice of the Dem Congress and their strategists, Obama may well bring his poll numbers down to the teens...
Pete Rooke, you forgot to take your meds.
Things To Consider Concerning Telecommunication Immunity
What would the media be reporting if the votes went the other way? How would C&L cover the results of that vote? This telecom issue was a "no-win" for the Democrats as long as the media was covering this issue.
You can see the headlines now: "The Democrats continue to block telecom initiative in spite of Republican concessions, or the do nothing congress continue with gridlock even when national security is at risk."
The point is this conservative media will give the Democrats zero credit for anything they do. If they had not voted for the FISA bill, you would of seen the framing contempt the media has for anything outside of conservative ideology.
A Bit Of Deception From the left
The claim that most of the Democrats who voted for the current FISA bill took money from the communication componies seem to indicate shady dealings by the Democrats. The "gist" of their involvement can be summed up in a provided passage:
What I see is a very loose connection to possible wrong doing for the amount of money received. In short, it is not worth the trouble. This is the kind of associations I have hated the Republicans for making when it benefited them. I hope the political left would not take to branding people in same way Republicans do.
Joseph
To all the dem apologists, one thing they could have done is to repeat ad nauseam that dear decider was spying on Americans starting Feb 2001 and look where that got us, and it wouldn't have been a smear or a lie. The republicks love to claim that we should have nothing to fear about domestic spying unless we have al kida on our speed dial, again the dems could have countered with if they have nothing to fear then they shouldn't need immunity. Instead, they chose to let the republicks smear them with the terrarist supporter anti-american label. Great leadership there, frakin losers.
Regarding the comment that it may seem that some dems are supportive of those policies, well duh. Heck, right now I wouldn't be surprised if it was Obama's goal to get the election results close enough to allow mccain to steal it. Seriously, he's a center right candidate, ie conservative, and in order to move to the "center" he moves further right. Obviously this move will alienate plenty of people on the left and the center while gaining very little votes from the "all dems and libruls need to be sent to concentration camps" crowd. So what then is the end result of that, oh right, very close elections. And yet dems keep playing that strategy. Either they are incredibly stupid, actually support the republicks in that, or both. Take your pick.
David Hill @ 95:
Pelosi is a gutless wonder, she made oh so many noises of what the Dems would do, they have done fuk all,,,scared of Bush, scared to do the bastard over, just sitting on their fat cat arses hoping Obama will win them the White House, it aint their's yet babe, not by a long way
Don't you all get it yet? Or even some of you?
Bush ain't wiretapping the average Amurrikan...
And he doesn't give a rat's ass about listening to the "terrorists"...
That doesn't serve his/their agenda at all.
Who Bush IS wiretapping and gathering information on,
is THE DEMOCRATS! And the Republicans too, actually.
Think about it:
Bush & Cheney have access to every detail about every mistress,
every bribe, every gay closet, every lewd act,
every drug addiction, and on and on and on.
It's bascially Watergate 1000-fold. Except it's not just one building
they snuck into to steal info and secrets. It's anyONE and everyWHERE.
How else can you possibly explain the utterly abominable
spinelessness of the Democrats? Easy - They've been read the riot
act by these criminals: Do as we say, or your secret comes out.
And how to explain how the Republican party has been
completely hijacked to vote in lockstep too? Same deal.
And what politician is gonna come out publicly and say
"Well, I voted the way I did because Bush is blackmailing
me with info about the woman I'm screwing behind my wife's back" ??
I just can't see any other way to explain the constant caving in
and bowing down to the WORST, most UNPOPULAR president in
the history of this country.
Maybe in 2004, it might've seemed smart to throw Bush support...
But now, with the avalanche of all the lies and crimes exposed,
AND three years of barely getting above 30% approval?
WHAT DRUGS ARE THEY ON, IF THIS ISN'T THE EXPLANATION?
yeah, i just dont think that they would have anything on harry reid or pelosi...
though it might explain why lieberman is such a joke.

Perhaps it is time we wake up and realize that maybe it's not the opinion of the electorate that politicians worry about. Clearly this country is controlled by corporations. If we want things to change we need to find a way to twist the arm of these Corps. Or we need to find politicians selfless and fearless enough to put restrictions back in place on corporations. Remember folks in our capitalist society corporations have the same rights as people.
The democrats have been mostly guttless -- Pelosi took impeachment off the table before a single hearing to find out how much of the constitution had been trashed by bushy/cheeeny. And now with FISA -- the dems forgive all the sins -- even before we have gathered the facts. It's all gonna be better next year, ignor what we are doing now is bullshit --- and so much of the democratic party is buying this crap from their own party. Please someone out there must have better insight than I ---- how can the dems not kick george's butt -- he is hated by the public in vast numbers? Go back a year and poll any large group of democrats and paint the political picture we have today --- their reaction would be powerful ---- it seems we have all become that fucking frog in the slowly boiling pot of water --- we ain't getting out.....................
please dont assume our senators and representatives understand the meaning of the bills they pass.
"Sit down, my son. We don't read most of the bills we pass."
--U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)
[To Michael Moore, explaining how Congress could pass the Patriot Act without reading it]
President Bush may be the worst unpopular President ever, but in a lot of Republicans' minds he is the best & most popular President ever. President Bush just has too much power, & power equals popularity in Washington. He always gets his way, no matter what, which is very Machiavellian, I feel.
The so-called leaders of today's Democratic Party are why I hardly venture into politics anymore. All through the Bush Regime, everbody left of Adolph Hitler has been fighting the Cons tooth and nail. Everybody except our so-called leaders. So, like I always say, fuck Pelosi and fuck Reid!!! Spineless cowards!! And while you're at it, please make sure that LIEberman only flies on small aircraft.
