Flying Spaghetti Monster bless Dennis Kucinich. He's in the middle of an absolutely sisyphean task of trying to make Congress actually do their job -- one that far more Americans support than they did the impeachment of Bill Clinton -- and one that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is frustratingly and blindly ignoring, as evidenced by her stop-me-before-I-throw-something-at-the-screen appearance on The View.
JOY BEHAR: You’ve ruled against impeaching George Bush and Dick Cheney, and now Kucinich is trying to pass that. Why do you insist on not impeaching these people, so that the world and America can really see the crimes that they’ve committed?
REP. NANCY PELOSI: Well, I think that it—I think it was important, when I became Speaker—and it’s, by the way, a very important position—President, Vice President, Speaker of the House—I saw it as my responsibility to try to bring a much divided country together to the extent that we could. I thought that impeachment would be divisive for the country.
In terms of what we wanted—set out to do, we wanted to raise the minimum wage, give the biggest increase in veterans benefits to veterans in the seventy-seven-year history, then pass research for stem cell research, all of that. This week, we’re going to pass equal pay for equal work. It has been a long time in coming—pay equity. We’re going to pass legislations for product safety, for toys that children put in their—there’s an agenda that you have to get done. You have to try to do it in a bipartisan way. The President has to sign it.
If somebody had a crime that the President had committed, that would be a different story.
Have you not been paying fricking attention for the last eight years, Nancy??? What do you mean, IF???? Say it with me now: warrantless wiretapping; waterboarding, lying to Congress and the American people to illegally invade and occupy a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us, firing US Attorneys for not pursuing partisan prosecutions, outing a covert CIA agent. And those were just ones you knew about and did nothing to stop, Pelosi. How dare she play stupid on national television and insult all our intelligence and what this country (once) stood for? How. Dare. She.
So it makes me love the undaunted Kucinich that much more. He appeared on Democracy Now! and tried to spin this in the best way possible.
(T)he reason why the Judiciary Committee should hold a hearing on the impeachment itself is because there needs to be a public airing of this. So, I have a great deal of respect for Speaker Pelosi, and I think that since she made that statement on The View, there's an opportunity now for us to come forward and to lay all the facts out so that she can reconsider her decision not to permit the Judiciary Committee to proceed with a full impeachment hearing.
Give 'em hell, Dennis.
full transcript below the fold
JUAN GONZALEZ: We're talking about the use of public subsidies for sports stadiums. We're joined from Washington, D.C. by Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich. And here in New York, we have Bettina Damiani, the project director of Good Jobs New York, and Neil deMause, author of Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profit.
But, Congressman Kucinich, you've been leading the fight for impeachment, and I know you have to go very soon, so I wanted to ask you about an interview with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that aired on The View earlier this week. She was asked about impeachment.
JOY BEHAR: You've ruled against impeaching George Bush and Dick Cheney, and now Kucinich is trying to pass that. Why do you insist on not impeaching these people, so that the world and America can really see the crimes that they've committed?
REP. NANCY PELOSI: Well, I think that it-I think it was important, when I became Speaker-and it's, by the way, a very important position-President, Vice President, Speaker of the House-I saw it as my responsibility to try to bring a much divided country together to the extent that we could. I thought that impeachment would be divisive for the country.
In terms of what we wanted-set out to do, we wanted to raise the minimum wage, give the biggest increase in veterans benefits to veterans in the seventy-seven-year history, then pass research for stem cell research, all of that. This week, we're going to pass equal pay for equal work. It has been a long time in coming-pay equity. We're going to pass legislations for product safety, for toys that children put in their-there's an agenda that you have to get done. You have to try to do it in a bipartisan way. The President has to sign it.
If somebody had a crime that the President had committed, that would be a different story.
JOY BEHAR: Can they still do it after he's out?
BARBARA WALTERS: When we-when I interviewed you last year, you had just begun, and you were going to clean up the mess, remember?
REP. NANCY PELOSI: And we did.
BARBARA WALTERS: You look around this country, 75 percent of the country-forget George Bush-thinks that Congress is doing a lousy job.
ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I think it's 91 percent now.
REP. NANCY PELOSI: Well, I don't disagree with that, because largely it's predicated on ending the war in Iraq. That's the main question, and we were not successful. In our House of Representatives, I'm very proud of our members, because they voted overwhelmingly over and over again to bring the war to an end, bring the troops home safely and soon, sent it to the Senate, and it hits a dead end.
But in terms of that particular standard, I would say I disapprove, as well. But we do-we passed some of the things I just mentioned, the energy bill. We worked in a bipartisan way, Innovation Agenda. We have to create jobs, expand healthcare, protect the American people and educate our children. And you can't do that if you're trying to impeach the President at the same time, unless you have the goods that this president committed crimes.
JUAN GONZALEZ: That was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Congressman Kucinich, your response to her take on the situation with impeachment?
REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: Well, now that I've heard that the Speaker is looking for evidence that crimes may have been committed, I certainly want to direct her attention to the thirty-five articles of impeachment that I presented, which assert quite directly that crimes have been committed, including taking this nation into a war, an illegal war, based on lies; including the deaths of over a million innocent Iraqis, which constitute a war crime; including wiretapping, rendition, torture, illegal detention. There are many examples of laws that have been broken.
And the reason why the Judiciary Committee should hold a hearing on the impeachment itself is because there needs to be a public airing of this. So, I have a great deal of respect for Speaker Pelosi, and I think that since she made that statement on The View, there's an opportunity now for us to come forward and to lay all the facts out so that she can reconsider her decision not to permit the Judiciary Committee to proceed with a full impeachment hearing.
I just want to state this, that I appreciate that she consented to a hearing on Friday. It was a six-hour hearing, over a dozen witnesses. Twenty-four members of Congress attended. It's being taken seriously.
I think the idea that nothing can be done right now because we're on the eve of an election raises questions about our constitutional responsibility to be a check and balance to administration abuse of power. If in fact we're in a war that's based on lies, and we have thousands of troops whose lives are on the line every day, we owe it to them and we owe it to the American people to set straight the public record. And then, whether or not it results in the President being removed from office before the end of his term is another matter.
I want to further say that with the possibility of a war in Iran in the offing, a war against Iran, a war that would be a result of a pre-emptive attack, much like the one that the United States launched against Iraq, it becomes very important that we hold this administration to the highest standard of having to verify the statements they make to take us into one war and to try to take us into another.
JUAN GONZALEZ: Well, Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, thank you, once again, for joining us.

Login or Register to post comments.
OK, since she asked, Dennis can tell her ONCE AGAIN. Then she can't lie and say she doesn't know of any crimes Bush committed.
Go Dennis!
'Twas a far far better thing to roll a boulder over mount Pelosi
Than to mount Pelosi.
"He’s in the middle of an absolutely sisyphean task.."
Now just hold your horses.
Kucinich may be a lot of things, but he's no damned sissy.
Dennis Kucinich don't you wish he was running for president?
Pelosi makes me ill. What kind of bargaining did she do in return for not impeaching? I don't care what she got in return. Disgusting. I can't even listen to her voice anymore.
Is PELOSI a anagram of "spineless two faced lying twat" ? .........
There is no way out with soulless haradins like that.
ysbaddaden @ 2:
ha!
why do you continue to ignore reality. nancy pelosi is complicit in these crimes. any investigation will reveal the extent of her collusion. she is guilty of war crimes and betrayal of the constitution. so is jane harman.
john j @ 4:
he's always been my first choice. he never disappoints. unlike obama. not that obama is bad, he just aint no kucinich.
holy smoking spotted horny toads, DENNIS!!!!
dennis kucinich, you are truly a honorable and patriotic man.
nancy pelosi, i have absolutely no faith in you, and i really think you are part of the problem. you are one of the bush's most ardent defenders--despite your fluffy rhetoric.
speaker kucinich!
Pelosi presents her stunning agenda of reform as the reason for not seeking impeachment.
But that "stunning agenda of reform" has been blocked by the Senate. She says so herself.
So .. tell me again .. why hasn't the House impeached Bush and Cheney?
But how is Pelosi doing in California? I would like to see her replaced, but, I don't live in California, and I haven't heard anything that would make me think she is going anywhere.
Without her, Bush and Cheney would be held accountable for their CRIMES.
She's peddling the impeachment nonsense everywhere. She was being interviewed on NPR about her book, and she reiterated it. She also had the nerve to blame FISA on the SENATE. Thankfully, every caller they had smacked her down on one issue or another.
My guess is that a couple of years from now, after she has allowed Bush to skate free on everything, we'll be hearing Nancy bemoaning how she regrets the decision and how Bush snookered her.
john j @ 4:
dennis kucinich was the only one out of the whole bunch of candidates worth voteing for the rest were corporation pimps! hes still got my vote , and my money!
john j @ 4:
He's too reasonable and sensible to ever be voted in, the vast majority of the US would call him an appeaser and woop and holler as they short their guns in the air.
And people couldn't understand why I supported Dennis Kucinich during the primaries.
i have said it before and i repeat it now:
dennis kucinich is a rare politician, he is one of the VERY few that has integrity, courage, honesty and patriotism, and he is willing *gasp* to put country before party.
again: country before party. i respect that more than i could put into words. it is a rare attribute among clowns like steny, rahm, and nancy... and the list goes on and on
pelosi is just as guilty for bushco's crimes as bush is...
notice how traitor pelosi dodges the question and goes on about bi-partisan this and bi-patrician that.... republicans dont give a rats a$$ about compromise....
i hope cindy sheehan wipes her ass...
and i love this little tid-bid:
I thought that impeachment would be divisive for the country.
really? when did the constitution say as soon as pelosi becomes speaker, then she can override the constitution because she "thinks".....
dems are almost republicans.
He has a good first name, I'll give the guy that much.
The Koooch is the fuckin MAN!
Bush's greatest ally has been Nancy Pelosi. She allows anti-MoveOn, "Christians are Wonderful," and telecom immunity bills to be brought to the forefront while keeping impeachment, contempt of Congress, torture, and other anti-Bush issues in the background. Just what is it that a Republican Speaker would have done differently?
Oh, and Nancy, just how many millions of dollars of AT&T stock has your family owned?
How out of touch with America and Reality is this lady??
...She hasn't seen a crime committed by the BushGang??
Then, she states that Congress HAS cleaned things up??
Nancy -Your numbers suck because The Republicans in This Congress have Set A New Record For Obstructing YOU From Moving Anything Forward.
They Laugh about it, then w and his cronies go on TV and say "Congress Doesn't Do Anything" -AND YOU LET THEM GET THAT MESSAGE ACROSS UNCHALLENGED.
That's REALLY what people think.
Have you ever wondered HOW YOU have a LOWER Poll Rating than the criminals in the Whitehouse???
I'm starting to think that by exposing these crooks and liars, you may have more to lose than just the head seat at the big table.
--What have they got on YOU??
I can’t help but wonder why the 3rd in line to the throne is ignoring the only chance she’ll ever have to attain that throne. Either she’s a chicken shit or a DINO.
john j @ 4:
Got that right!
She's a bum, like the rest of them. Way to play it safe, Mrs. Speaker. You're a huge disappointment to this Democrat :(
Being bipartisan about upholding the law and protecting the constitution is not something to be proud of.
These items are not partisan issues. They transcend all of that BS.
In a world of grey, these things are actually quite clear cut. You either believe in a lawful system of government or you don't. And if you don't, you have no place being Speaker of the House.
nancy knew that bushco tortured. she is just protecting herself.... if anyone gets a chance, ask her why she is more interested in protecting herself than the Constitution... if impeachment goes forward, she along with other dems will be busted!
john j @ 4:
Obama are you listening, I'll even settle for VP
*I'll sell all my belongs and move to Florida and campaign
*You don't want to go negative, Do not worry I'll be your
swift boat
*I'll spend my time digging up dirt
*Even if i can't find anything, I'll lie
*I'll dedicate myself to stop faux news (this one might take a while to figure out how)
*I'll look for the McCain/Bush sex tape
*I'll look for the "blackey" tape by Cindy
Just say what you need and it's done
come on dennis time for a third party under an honest man! kucinich 08!
Sign the petition. kucinich.us
How disappointing that the first female Speaker of the House turns out to be nearly as useless as the toad who preceeded her.
She could have made her speakership truly historical, but it's politics as usual...
Liar, liar, pants on fire Pelosi!
Is Madame Speaker kidding? Or has she been blackmailed with one of the wiretap and email gatherings that found dirt under her fingernails? She has committed treason now to save something. It is not the constitution, so it must be her skin.
Connie serves Bob Flying Spaghetti Monster for dinner.
Along with a tossed salad, some garlic bread, washed down with some chilled barbaresco and some nice gelatto.
Please go IMMEDIATELY to:
www.kucinich.us
and sign his Impeachment Petition. This is the very last day to sign and he has only 100k plus signatures. It should have been 1 million.
BrendanM @ 13:
In addition the idea of working(with the republicans)in a "bi-partisan" manner is patently absurd.
Glenn Greenwald has points out how "bi-partisanship" works in Washington.
A bill comes before the House, the GOP tows the party line to a man whilst the Dems split their own votes with just enough for the GOP to win.Over and over and over again.
Is Pelosi so dim-witted that she failed to realize that by telling Bush (in going public no less) that she would never allow Congress to try to impeach him, Cheney, etc. that she was essentially telling Bush that for the next several years, the Administration can do anything it wants - legal or illegal, constitutional or unconstitutional - and our enabling Congress will sit on its hands.
It's not surprising then that Bush saw he had a green-light from Congress and, surprise, surprise, look at the unconsitutional and illegal acts the Administration then went on to commit.
Pelosi, and the Democrats who helped her, need to be booted out of office. I for one am not giving the DNC a nickel of my money ever again. It's time to work to establish a third party, people.
ZappaFrank @ 26:
It seems that both, Pelosi and Reid, were present at some of the meetings/committees that green-lighted some very unconstitutional stuff and they did nothing against it. If an investigation moves forward they will be held responsible, and thus the impeachment was taken off the table quicker than Paris Hilton's knickers in Spring Break.
BTW, where are some of the old trolls who used to make excuse after excuse for Pelosi's BS?
It is obvious to me that Nancy Pelosi is a coward. She is afraid of the good fight. She is afraid of justice. She is afraid of the words in the Constitution. She is afraid for her party. She is afraid for herself.
Either that or she is being blackmailed.
Either way she has the blood of millions on her hands.
Whilst Kucinich exerts his Sisyphian task
Queen Nancy is making us Tantalus.
NANCY, YOU ARE A JOKE AND A FAILURE!
nancy needs to be replaced with someone who isnt a traitor to her party and the country.
SHIRKER!
www.cindyforcongress.org (post the links to the opposition every time you see an article criticizing a politician)
If impeached (but not prosecuted for lack of votes), would Bush's approval ratings be below 30%? Recall that when Clinton was impeached, his approval ratings skyrocketed into the 70's. Perhaps the same would have happened with Bush.
If Bush/Cheney had been successfully impeached and removed, they would have been replaced by two repubs more competent (can't think of any, but must be somewhere). Better to keep Bushco corraled up than replaced by more competent repugs. As such, Bush/Cheney are like the zombies surrounding the boarded up house holding the still-humans: occasionally they can poke an arm through the window, but that's about it.
Better for the 08 elections to have two rotting corpses in the Oval Office for the voters to see and smell these last two years.
quint @ 42:
Turncoat!
Said it before, will say it again, Pelosi and Reid love Bush. Pelosi and Reid are DINO's...
There is no fucking "if"! She spends more time patting herself on the back than fighting for the constitution as far as I am concerned. That and promoting her fucking book.
Impeach Bush , no no no , because that would leave darth in charge , then the world will be f*****d , you really want that mans hand on the button ? .
the ever-useless nancy. I'd vote for cindy over her any day.
if nancy is what you get when you want an experienced legislator, I'll take an amateur.
Orangutan. @ 43:
thanks!
At least that woman has actually sacrificed something for this country.
nancy the millionaire is just a photo-op specialist like the shrub.
Tyler Durden @ 39:
Right on, Tyler. I suspect she got into something that will discredit her big time. They've got the goods on her, that's why she shifted gears as soon as she became Speaker.
Interesting; they can't accomplish all of these great things for the American people if they focus on impeaching the president and further dividing the American people.
Remind me again, exactly what has Congress accomplished on our behalf?
Impeach Pelosi!!!!!
Pelosi isn't and hasn't been doing her job. Her reasons for not bringing impeachment charges are ridiculous. This administration broke the law numerous times. WTF is she waiting for?
\ pelosi's insults to the constitution and failure to defend it from the bush abuses fall into the general DLC/centrist pattern the democrats have succumbed to for years and years now.
they figure that the left has no where else to go, and they know they can keep jerking liberals/progressives/lefties around, with the assumption that the left HAS to vote democratic no matter how much the dems have become GOP-lite.
they bet that the left will always vote for the dems--versus a third party candidate--and this is the result. we have an opposition party in name only, a party that is supposed to be of the people yet doesn't even listen to their own base, and a party as dependent on corporate cash as the other side of the aisle.
no more. no more votes, support, contributions to the democratic politicians that continue to take my vote for granted, make false promises, and only listen to the moneyed interests.
nancy is too busy thinking about her next facelift to consider impeachment
Bismarck @ 47:
Like this?
http://www.beautifulmadonna.com/madonnasex/cover.jpg
montymarket @ 44:
i understand your point, but this assumes that partisanship is more important than the constitution.
also, figure that the american public would view a BJ different than crimes against the constitution.
"Mt. Pelosi"
Now that there was funny. Good work, Ms. Belle.
Extra cool points for using a Greek mythology reference.
Kevin Holsinger @ 59:
And props for use of the word sisyphean.
Pelosi is a traitor! To her oath to uphold and protect the constitution and to the people who elected her.
montymarket @ 44:
Yes indeed, after all Clinton started an unpopular war, sent the debt through the roof, and managed to ran the economy into the toilet. So I can see how impeaching Bush for war crimes and major fuckery regarding the constitution would have the same effect than impeaching a president for a blowjob. I mean, the parallels are amazing!!!
Even if we forget that Clinton's popularity did not soar due to the impeachment, but rather it did not sink due to it. Which is a different scenario that Bush 20 something % suddenly jumping to 70%. But that is a minor detail, right?
I mean are some people this retarded in this country, no wonder we have what we deserve. Morons...
Oh, and lest we forget: The job of the speaker of the house is not to win elections, it is to uphold and defend the constitution, and same goes for all elected positions in the Houses (and the presidency, but it has gone rogue for the better part of this decade)
Man, no wonder the Democrats are the laughing stock of politics! Nancy Pelosi gives the word "dickless wonder" a whole new spin... Why is it that she and Holy Joe do the GOP's work for them?
Can I use Pelosi's logic?
Please. Vote. Her. Out.
A friend told me a couple weeks ago and I just called him and asked again . That should a nuclear weapon be used , that the sitting POTUS remains in power till the end of that war . That Regan signed this as a bill ( or power ? ) anyone know of this ? .
My friend is a Ret. USMC combat grunt .
Jo @ 40:
I see one of two possible situations.
1) Pelosi is listening too much to the DC consultant class, who is telling her that this is a losing proposition. It's all about winning and losing and she wants to win, even if it means neglecting her duties. See the roll over on FISA. And the upcoming roll over on off-shore drilling.
2) Pelosi is actually blocking investigations to save her own skin. She knows that any investigation will reveal what she knew and how much she knew about what was going on. So, just block investigations from happening in the first place.
Which one is right? I don't know. Perhaps both. But these seem to be the most logical options.
OH' that Kucinich! He's a real whacko... expecting observance of the 'rule of law'... expecting righteous indignation from politicians who aren't as whacko about following the law and doing what is right as he is... expecting the American people to be upset for being lied to about a war that has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths (if you include those sub-human Iraqis that is)... expecting the flag-waving Americans to be upset about being spied on by their own government...
The only impeachment worth pursuing was Bill Clinton's. How dare Bill lie about his extramarital sexual encounters?!! That was just too much to bear!
kudos to behar, on a "silly little" women's daytime show, for showing how effective journalism can work.
...
Can we impeach Pelosi for not defending the Constitution? I mean really. When will she wake up and smell the coffee? She took an oath to defend the Constitution and she has so far refused or been unwilling to do so.
I will support and donate to any cause that works towards the removal of Pelosi as speaker and congresswoman. She is worse than an enemy.
Samson- @ 58:
i do not defend bill clinton's misbehavior, but the crimes of bush/cheney are in another league . . . murder, torture, corruption, election fraud must be taken seriously or we are no longer a land of principles and laws
unless they are unfeeling, unthinking robots, nancy pelosi and the rest of the congress should be outraged at the crimes that continue to be committed under their watch, and they should not be able to sleep a wink until justice has been done
I could make a joke about Kucinich rolling Pelosi
But that would be redundant.
I repeat myself when under stress...I repeat myself when under stress...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZbOdgevxDE
I have watched Dennis since his days as Cleveland Mayor. He always stood for his principles and fought the establishment. I would like to say he fought for the little guy, but that was dependent on whose job was at stake. I think it is fair to say the public good was always foremost in his policies and actions. Dennis was always David fighting Goliath.
Pelosi came to my attention just 5 years ago or so and I thought she was on the side of good and a light in the darkness. I now feel she is just another spineless politician in for the power, influence and money. I am tired of her rhetoric and excuses. She needs to go…
Pelosi and Dennis are like oil and water and I would go with Dennis over Pelosi any day. Other than losing a Democratic seat, I see no loss in losing Pelosi.
see one of two possible situations.
1) Pelosi is listening too much to the DC consultant class, who is telling her that this is a losing proposition. It’s all about winning and losing and she wants to win, even if it means neglecting her duties. See the roll over on FISA. And the upcoming roll over on off-shore drilling.
2) Pelosi is actually blocking investigations to save her own skin. She knows that any investigation will reveal what she knew and how much she knew about what was going on. So, just block investigations from happening in the first place.
I'll go with Door #2.
Nancy Pelosi is a traitor, even worse than the Christofascist Bush regime criminals. She is a Democrat and as such her crimes are worse. We expect baby killing, terrorism, and treason from Republican Christians. We don't expect Democrats to commit the levels of treason that Nancy Pelosi is committing against us.
Pelosi is a good example of a "Democrat." True loyal opposition to the "Republicans". I find it really sad that the country had to get this bad to make the "Democrats" look like a viable solution. Spineless weaklings basking in the dark shadow of their evil masters. We need more real Democrats like Kucinich and Republicans like Paul and Coburn and Independents like Jon Steward and Stephen Colbert. Then, and only then, can we get back to fighting about what is good for the country rather than angling over what benefits political parties and their corporate supporters (who make sure to have an investment spread on both so-called "sides of the isle."
"I thought that impeachment would be divisive for the country."
There are only two historical events to provide possible evidence for this claim: Nixon and Clinton. The Clinton impeachment was divisive because it was clearly politically motivated. The Nixon impeachment was not divisive for the country because it was clear that there was sufficient cause for a hearing, and that justice was served by his removal from office.
It's clear that the current state is closer to the Nixon case than to the Clinton one, so Pelosi has no evidential basis for her belief.
Impeach Pelosi.
dennis @ 20:
Yeah, the similarities definitely end there.
Until I read this, I never realized what a complete dumb-ass Pelosi is. You ask her a question about impeachment, and she replies with a statement about equal pay.
You conclude the question with the phrase, "so that (Americans) can really see the crimes (Bush and Cheney) have committed..." and she replies with, "IFSOMEBODY HAD A CRIME BUSH HAD COMMITTED (sic), THAT WOULD BE DIFFERENT." The woman is stupid. Not merely inept, stupid. And she feels compelled to remind the interviewer that she's in a powerful position, only to follow with words that demonstrate her lack of fitness?
Nancy Pelosi is a transparent, phoney-baloney shell of a human being.
She might as well tattoo "COMPROMISED" on her forehead. Is it just me,
or does everything about her seem poorly calculated? Every word comes
across as forced as her smile.
I hope something good comes of this. A man should not get away with the crimes of Bush, no matter the political issues that will likely come out of the woodwork.
linda @ 8:
EXACTLY! That is the ONLY possible reason for her not starting impeachment proceedings the minute she took over leadership (or lack thereof) of the House.
I've said it many times, she is a traitor and I don't understand why California hasn't started a recall.
bobsf @ 78:
Hum... Nixon was never impeached. He resigned... even tricky dick had more decency than this bunch of degenerates.
