The Taliban is Musharraf's pet project, he wants, I think at some level, to recreate the Mughal empire. Unfortunately for Musharraf, not even the Taliban will want to answer to that, much less the Hindus of India.

I like Helena Cobban's ideas, yet I'd also caution that stability in Iraq is going to be nonexistent so long as US troops are still there, and Afghanistan's Civil War won't end after we leave, nor will the planned Surge there have much effect, in the long term. The USSR could control Afghan cities, too. They neglected the countryside. Why people think that controlling Kabul, a city and therefore repeating the same failed tactics of the Soviets is going to work, I dunno. But then collective punishment never works that well anyway.

Yes. He was able to beat Hillary, Thank God. And, he's drawing larger polling numbers representative of voters that will elect him as our next President in November.

Hiillary lost, thank God, get over it.

LAC, where's your daily apocalyptic rant about how the country is finished?

Come on, just one for old times' sake.....

Obama's camp should accuse McCain of playing the age card when McCain does his act of pretending to fall asleep whenever anyone mentions his age.

Guess who's a celebrity

click over to the Internet Movie Database to see just how often John McCain has appeared on other TV talk shows since 2000, when he became nationally famous after his failed presidential bid:

Jay Leno: 10 times.
David Letterman: 8 times.
The Daily Show: 12 times (or 13?).
Conan O'Brien: 3 episodes.
Larry King Live: 9 times.
Saturday Night Live: twice.
Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (!):
once Entertainment Tonight (!!): twice.
The View: twice.
Tony Danza Show (!!!): once.

and the icing on the cake....

The man had a cameo in "The Wedding Crashers"! And in 2006, Senator McCain apparently appeared as an actor in an episode of "24"...

McCain isn't going to need any 527 groups throwing mud for him, his own campaign has decided to do it.

It's really a shame, as much trouble as our country is in and as much as it faces, that negative ads may once again cause voters to vote for the candidate, who is least capable to doing what is best for our country, to be elected.

Here, from Glenn Greenwald, is the story that will rank with the efforts and likes of Woodward and Bernstein.

This story should change everything, but will it?

The FBI's lead suspect in the September, 2001 anthrax attacks -- Bruce E. For the last 18 years, Ivins was a top anthrax researcher at the U.S. Government's biological weapons research laboratories at Ft. The 2001 anthrax attacks remain one of the great mysteries of the post-9/11 era. After 9/11 itself, the anthrax attacks were probably the most consequential event of the Bush presidency. One could make a persuasive case that they were actually more consequential.… [read on]

The anthrax attacks came from an agent of the government. Let that roll around on your tongue.

No conspiracy theorists needed.

What is needed is a new department of justice, a new speaker of the house.

MSNBC: Wal-Mart mobilizes against Democrats: report

Wall Street Journal says effort aimed at thwarting unions

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is mobilizing U.S. store managers to lobby against Democrats in November's presidential election, fearing they will make it easier for workers to unionize, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if store workers unionize, the paper said.

About a dozen employees who attended meetings in seven states said executives argued employees would have to pay hefty union dues and get nothing in return, and might have to go on strike without compensation. They also warned that unionization could force the company to cut jobs as labor costs rise, the Journal reported.

The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who have run the meetings didn't tell those attending how to vote in the November elections, but made it clear that voting for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, would be tantamount to inviting unions in, the Journal said.

Wal-Mart opposes proposed legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to unionize by signing a card rather than holding a vote.

A Wal-Mart spokesman confirmed the meetings to the Journal.

I am SHOCKED.

Yeah .. but what's "best for the country" is rarely what is best for USA Inc.

It's only a shame if you're one of us who isn't worth at least tens of millions of dollars.

And anyone who still "loves the Clintons" and thinks Bill's Presidency was a great thing has only to look at their role in bringing Wal Mart to life.

Hillary - lawyer for Wal Mart.
Bill - NAFTA with no provision for labor or emvironmental protections.

yuk

Bill Clinton did as much to destroy the American Dream as GW Bush.
