Continuing his fantastic coverage of issues the rest of the media dare not touch, Dan Abrams last night went through John McCain's lengthy list of television and film credits to argue that McCain -- not Barack Obama -- is the real political celebrity in the race. It seems the only one on the panel who rejects this is Republican shill Brad Blakeman. What a shocker.

"In reality, isn‘t John McCain actually a bigger celebrity than Barack Obama? The John McCain who‘s made cameo appearances in “Wedding Crashers” and “24.” We‘ve got the tape."

Why is this relevant?!

Terrible's picture

The only thing making Obama a "celebrity" is the fact that he's the first black candidate for President in the general election. The many things that make McCain a celebrity is the fact that he's made an ass of himself all other the place for decades.

But the Kerry campaign showed that almost every charge, not matter how trivial, has to have a response as soon as possible.

Good question, we all know McCain is running a dirty campaign. I would still like to see C&L focus on just the issue we are needing to address as a nation.

Oh my God...

That McCain crap from SNL just may be the most shamefully hilarious nonsense I've ever seen.

tom's picture

As to why this is relevant, when the opponent is repeatedly throwing low blows, as painful as it might be, you have do deal with it. Kerry didn't win when he just backed away from attacks, and Obama realizes he can't either.

Dan-in-PA's picture

Jeezusz....Ben Stein was absolutely and pathetically disgusting on Dan Abrams the other night.

I've never ever wanted to hurl a brick at my TV more than during that segment.

Why does ANY media outlet legitimize such an obvious and apparent empty shell of a mouthpiece?

Exactly, which why the stooge on that panel missed the whole point with this "Well, nobody remembers those appearances" junk. You have to already be a celebrity to even get invited to host SNL. It was 2002 and McCain wasn't even doing anything that year except being famous. If everyone didn't already know who he was, he wouldn't be on that show.

Another case of irony, following the McCain anti-Obama "The One" ad, speaking code to end-timers, implying Obama might be the Antichrist, The Nation reports that the True Bible Society's research, to be published in End Times Journal, shows that McCain very well may be said Antichrist.
The Nation.

Now, I think Jesus of Nazareth likely existed, but I doubt his being The Christ, just as I doubt the existence of an Antichrist, but don't you think it's ironic??

This is just as stupid as McCain's attack ads

The day this nation regains it's sanity will be the day credibility-challenged Bushbots like Brad Blakeman are laughed off the stage at every public appearance they are foolish enough to attempt.

Seriously, why are the rest of them even conversing with this cement-head? They should be laughing and jeering and pelting him with rotten fruit.

According to IMDb, Barack Obama has a current STARmeter(tm) ranking of 2,774 to John McCain's current rank of 3,852 - so of course by definition Obama is the bigger celebrity. Obama is only credited with "thanks" and "self" whereas McCain is credited as an "actor", "writer", "thanks" and "self" - it seems McCain's been swimming with more sharks.

Actually this could be a bad break for McCain. He does not want to talk about marital infidelity as it only brings up his own affairs that he had in the past.

Well the old timer might have to go to Hollywood full time when he is no longer a Senator. Arizona Voters are trying to remove John McCain as their Senator and he will lose the election for President. It's either the nursing home or Hollywood for the old man. Maybe they can have a remake of the Bucket List and McCain and Fred Thompson could have their movie.

should the msm play it over and over again while not pointing out the hypocracy?

I have to agree with you bean to the extent that the MSM will dumbdown election coverage to the WWF/tabloid crowd just for the sake of ratings. It really is a sad commentary on our nation as a whole and frankly, its embarressing to watch most of the time.

Why don't more people see that racism is what really underlies McCain's accusing Obama of being a celebrity? Obama drew 200,000 people in Berlin because of his ideas, the power of his oratory, and the fact that he is the first African-American presidential nominee of a major party. Clearly, his ideas and speech-making don't make him a "celebrity"; being African-American does. So when Republicans attack him for being a celebrity, they're actually attacking him for being African-American. It's not like he was a celebrity before he ran for President, or is so desperate to be President that, like McCain, he's running for President a second time. McCain is the one who's shamefully pursued political celebrity as a Senator and Presidential candidate. Obama just happened to become one.

Likely the most pointless and racist thing I've read on here for a while. That the man is black has nothing to do with it, that he isn't Bush and shows some glimmer of hope for the future is. Europe isn't racked by the same hateful racism that the US is, and the petty shit that you focus on has no place in a world figure talking to people.

Reasonstein's picture

McHypocrite! Why would he question Obama's Celeb status, when he has more recognition in such movies and TV shows? After all, he does revere Ronald Reagan who was such a bad actor!

Obama is much more popular beyond celebrity status, and all of those McSame attack ads are baseless, particularly since there is no source whatsoever cited when he accuses him of "higher taxes", and "fewer jobs" - the latter especially a false accusation.

Charlton Heston is dead so he wont be making a response. Obama is merely a man and human being so neither will he. Odd why GOPers wish to elevate a mere man to a deified position. seems kinda blasphemous to do that, kinda against their faith, or so it would seem. Dems arent placing Obama on a deified pedestal but the easily addled and lazy thinking GOPers do. hey, whatever they wanna do. but using their own mind's seems anathema to them. funny that.

Look, anybody famous is a celebrity; Bush is a celebrity. We admire Obama. We revere Obama. The World reveres Obama because he represents hope and change for something better like peace and prosperity for the working class. Unlike Bush and McCain who represent Greed, Death and Destruction.

What an amateurish joke SNL has become.

In the second clip at 2:30, you can CLEARLY hear someone call out John's cue (by name), and you can see the shadow of a boom mic over McBush's right shoulder.

He's also reading RIGHT off the cue cards, but most SNL cast members do that anyway, so I won't hold it against him.

Layne's picture

May I also say, it's disgusting how desperate the GOP's are to turn all of Obama's positives into a negatives.

McBush couldn't fill a waffle house for Chrissakes, and he couldn't fucking pay 200,000 Germans to show up to listen to him stutter.

And this is Obama's fault? If Americans are stupid enough to vote for that old fuck, then they deserve whatever bad happens to them.

And could someone please fucking explain to me what a "Reagan Democrat" is??!

MJ's picture

I watched this clip and for a moment got caught up in how completely ridiculous John McCain was on this one. Especially that guy defending him on Abram's show. Wow, did he just admit that the only reason to vote for McCain is to keep him from doing cameos in bad tv shows and movies?
Anyway, I got caught up in that for a minute, then it dawned on me. What the hell am I doing watching a "news" show that is doing nothing more than showing me clips from popular movies and television and talking about Paris Hilton? There are people dying in fraudulent wars all over the middle east, we have no privacy anymore, the next great depression is on our doorsteps, our government still can't get their shit straight on 9/11, the dollar is crashing like mad, global warming is about ready to eat us for breakfast, gas is more expensive than ever, and no one can even come close to impeaching the president, and I'm supposed to watch a program discussing our two candidates for president and how much or not so much they are a "celebrity"?

What's going on here?

Folks, this is so much worse than we could ever have imagined. Turn off the damn tv until they give us some real information.
These people in the media are just as responsible for the situation we're in as the politicians we bitch about everyday.

Europe isn't racked by the same hateful racism that the US is, and the petty shit that you focus on has no place in a world figure talking to people.

Oh, you can read? Apparently not well. My comment was anything but racist. I voted for Obama in the primary, have donated money to his campaign, and have volunteered for his campaign. But I'm not so clueless as to pretend that his race doesn't matter. And even if many Americans pretend race doesn't matter, people around the world know how historic Obama's being the Democratic nominee is.

"Europe isn't racked by the same hateful racism that the US is"? Do you know anything? It might not be the "same" racism, but all racism is "hateful," and Europe has more than enough racism to go around. Do some research. You can start with the recent protests in Serbia, and then move on to the various neo-Nazi groups in Italy and Germany, and European soccer's campaign against racism.
