The real story about this interview is that John Oliver got through it without getting bleeped. It was, after all, on CBS, and he had some firm views about American elections, Donald Trump, and the debates.

“I don’t really care about [Trump] in any capacity,” he said on “CBS This Morning." "I don’t really have anything to say to him.”

“He’s said everything he has to say,” Oliver said of Trump. "He has no internal monologue, that man.”
“He’s an open book,” the comic added. "That book doesn’t have that many interesting words in it. It’s not like you’re going to find the secret nugget he has been holding back.”

Oliver criticized America’s presidential election process, which is consuming the political world more than a year before Election Day.

“It’s undeniably long,” said Oliver, who is British. "No one can say that the American democratic process is not long — indeed, way too long.”

“There are a lot of debates and a lot of talking without much being said,” he said, referencing the third GOP presidential debate in Boulder, Colo. earlier this week.

“There are a lot of balloons involved,” the HBO anchor quipped. "Democracy looks like a 4-year-old’s birthday.”

“It is very frustrating to me, the amount of coverage before the election. "[It is] literally years in advance.”

Oliver, who satirizes the news cycle during his weekly broadcast, also denied having any link to journalism.

“I’m not a journalist, at all, obviously,” he said. "I’m a comedian.”

“There’s a lot of absurd public policies to shine a light on,” Oliver added. "That’s the kind of thing we look towards — things that have not been covered too much.”

Amen to that. I'm sick of the primaries, wish the primary debates were behind us, that the votes were cast and we were on our way to the general election. A two-year campaign is exhausting.
