Abortion, abortion, abortion.

We just can't have an election in this country without the Republicans making abortion a BIG issue. Just yesterday, Trump declared that women who have abortions have to be punished.

He's marching in the long line of "pro-lifers" who preach that the fertilized egg has the same personhood as a child.

So, if you "kill" the fetus, it's no different than killing a two-year-old toddler.

Let's look into this personhood idea (I’d call it nonsense) for a minute.

According to all of these Christian pro-lifers, God creates a human at the moment that an egg and sperm unite. Into this new human life he breaths a soul. That tiny new being, made by God's hand, is precious and must be protected. Thus, ending that life is a sin against God and must be illegal under the law.

Here's the rub.

  • Half of all fertilized eggs (those tiny new persons God made) are spontaneously aborted before a woman knows she's pregnant.
  • Another 15-20% of pregnancies end with a spontaneous abortion in the first trimester.

So, almost 70% of those beings God supposedly created, those precious lives that must be protected under the law, die long before they are born. Who is responsible for this huge killing spree? God?

In several countries around the world, women are being jailed for having miscarriages. There are places in the US where women are facing trial for miscarriages or stillbirths.

Let’s not kid ourselves. The radical right-wing, pro-lifers are so drunk on their "pro-lifeness" that they work tirelessly to make sure that there are no abortions in the US and that any woman who dares to terminate a pregnancy faces dire penalties.

These holier-than-thou Christians don’t believe in exceptions. They don’t care about ectopic pregnancies, horrific medical complications that threaten women’s lives. They are unmoved by victims of rape or incest. And, frankly, they don’t give a damn for babies once the cord is cut.

These “pro-lifers” love to proclaim how much they love, love, love fertilized eggs and how much they really, really, really want to punish women for aborting those fertilized eggs.

It's time for all of us to realize that this "pro-life" movement is anti-medicine, anti-choice, anti-woman. It's all about fetuses, period.

Here’s an added bit of irony for all the "pro-life" Roman Catholics . . .

The Catholic Church now teaches that human life begins at conception, the instant when the sperm and the egg unite and God infuses a soul into that new being. To destroy that life is the most terrible sin, one punishable by eternal damnation. Most people don't know, however, that the Church has not always taken that position.

For centuries, the Church taught that the soul arrived in the body long after conception. Thomas Aquinas, the greatest Catholic theologian, claimed that the male embryo became human at 40 days. The female didn't become human for 80 days. Aquinas also taught that the female developed from a defective seed.

Theology change for political expediency? Maybe.
