Air America, Over and Out.
And in more terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad news, Air America filed for bankruptcy and ceased live broadcasting today:
It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.
The current economy and state of media upheaval is to blame, but we'll miss this terrific voice of progressive politics. A dirty rotten shame, is what it is.
It's too bad hope, progress and change can't make money, but fear, hatred and bigotry can.
The successful ones will find a home. Hartmann, Rhodes, Miller and maybe Ron Reagan.

Thom Hartmann hasn't been part of AA since early last year, though he is still carried on the AA station here in SF. I could care less when Randi Rhodes was dropped almost 2 years ago, I swore I'd never listen to her again after her screed about Senator Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro. Poor management felled AA, but honestly, the medium doesn't always fit progressive demographics. I'd listen if there was any chance it would increase ratings, but the sampled polling is inaccurate at best. Either way, I'd rather read the news online than hear opinions and punditry.

Jim and company have been doing their own radio dramas since 1976. They are on many radio stations with "Imagination Theater". They have shows such as Harry Nile, Sherlock Holmes, etc.
I have been using a CPAP machine since 1993 to sleep and I listen with headphones to all the radio shows from Harry Nile. Please check it out. They have excellent shows and cast members. Most Harry Nile shows are taped live at the Kirkland Theater, across Lake Washington from Seattle.

Progressive radio broke through the local radio barrier and has permanently gone coast to coast, even though still only about a tenth the penetration of conservative radio, it is nationwide.
Thanks to Air America we still have great progressive radio from former AA people like Rachel Maddow, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann, Mike Malloy, and many others who are now on other national networks or syndication, plus the progressive radio stations built around Air America programming also vastly expanded the exposure of independents who were never officially in the Air America family like Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller.
The real victory of Air America is in the people it shed along the way and who prospered on their own, and in the creation of a nationwide market for progressive voices, which remains even after Air America's slow demise and final whimper.

The bankruptcy of Air America does not reflect at all on the viability of progressive talk. If you care to have a civil conversation about it, I'm only happy to pull out rating tables and bandwidth coverage to factually prove to you that your insults are without merit.
Air America, the corporation, is defunct. But Progressive Radio is doing fine. Almost all of the best of Air America's past have already moved out on their own. The majority of national progressive radio has been from non Air America produced shows for quite awhile now. The stations that ran Air America produced shows remain in business - and these days there is no shortage of national progressive shows for them to choose from.
Ring of Fire is self produced and will remain on the air.
Randi Rhodes is now syndicated by Clear Channel.
Thom Hartmann has been self syndicated for quite a while now.
Jack Rice and Ron Reagan - don't know yet.

the fact that reconciliation (51 votes) deals only with budget matters, and all Republicans care about is tax cuts, so that's why they were able to do that. Liberals want to do more complicated legislation that would not be under the purview of reconciliation.

They were on extremely low wattage stations with no advertising. Much of the best talent went on to other successful venues. (Garafolo, Franken, Maddow) El Drugbo basically gives his show away. In some parts of the country he's on three stations in the same geographic area. The Washington Times is a loss leader for religious nutcase Sun Yung Moon. (sp?) The Weekly Standard loses money and is propped up by rightie benefactors. National Review is a not-for-profit enterprise.
Heritage and other wingnut "think tanks" are welfare queens subsidized by Scaife, Coors and other wealthy cons. The New York (com)Post is a Murdoch loss leader. Faux "News" lost 500 million dollars in their first 5 years of operation. The conclusion: Cons are willing to bank roll money losing operations which support their corporate ideology.

Honesty, I don't see how listening to talking heads supports freedom. What listening to these people does is bolster those who already agree with them. I'm obviously conservative and I naturally disagree with the direction Obama is leading the country (no judgement call, I just disagree).
Obama came in with what looked like a mandate- but I really thing people were tired of all the bad press that Bush got and the republicans got (I'm NO fan of the Republicans by the way).
I think the bankruptcy of Air America is a symptom of bigger problems that liberals have. I really believe middle America is Center to Center right and I don't think the country likes what they see.

Here's where you go wrong. Clintons was NO liberal, he bowed to corporate interests as Obama as done. Obama was a good speaker but did not follow through on what he actually said. His voting record should have spoke for itself, but people tend to ignore it, if they get swept up in a tide of someone telling them what they want to hear. Health care bombed under hillary because ofrepub obstructionism during the 90s and the attempt to unseat a sitting President. Obama has never ruled from teh left...he's been right of center all along. How do you not see that? Air America had to compete against massive RW radio and RW corporations. Of course it wasn't going to make it. Communications in this country are mostly if not completely controlled by the RW. Moving "center right" as you call it is not what you mean, you mean move to the far right. This country has not been left of center for decades.
So, first stop falsely defining your terms and labeling people incorrectly.

Kept changing things to where I could no longer download on my work computer. I cannot download software to enable the changes they keep making. Mic92.1 has recently done the same. If I can't load and listen, you lose listeners. I have to keep searching progressive sites online to find my favorites. The list is shrinking. There is no progressive radio in the Cincinnati/Northern Ky area.
After this Supreme court decision, there will be no need to even listen to the radio, get online or watch tv. United States of Corporations started today.
Just "google" the names and you'll find LOTS of Liberal Radio.

needs to go the route of the Daily Show. Use humor to slam the right and the pundits, while getting the truth out. By humor, I mean, funny stuff, not the bullying, whiny, mean-spirited saying something just to be outrageous stuff. Intelligent humor. But that is very hard to do and keep up on a regular basis.
The had humor in droves with Jenneane Garaofolo, Sam Cedar and Marc Maron and they screwed them all and hired dullards...damn!

I went from an everyday listener to "f*ck it - I'll listen some music now..."
I LOVED Morning Sedition. I listened to AA from 6am until midnight.
Then, little by little they let all the good talent go until it became barely tolerable Lionel??? Awful.
I've been listening to Marc Maron's podcast, WTF with Marc Maron. It's not political, more like an inside baseball look at comics and comedy, but I've listened to him since Air America debuted. I used to pay for a subscription to AA, but they lost me when all my favorite talent left. Lionel, Montel Williams, Jerry Springer, and Ron Kuby were a sad substitute for Morning Sedition(Marc Maron and Mark Riley), The Majority Report(Sam Seder and Janeane Garafolo), Unfiltered (Rachel Maddow, Lizz Winstead, and Chuck D), The O'Franken Factor (Al Franken and Katherine Lanpher), Randi Rhodes, and Mike Malloy.
I am a staunch lefty. I think I listened to Air America once and found it kind of dull. Whoever was on at the time came across as a liberal version of Rush Limbaugh. I was bored quickly. I know of no friends of mine, who ever listened to Air America (and I have many liberal friends). We all prefer Stewart and Colbert, who, when I last checked, were thriving.
The bankruptcy of Air America is certainly not symptomatic of any bigger problems with liberals.
Oh, and while we are on the subject, I wish you righties were not so friggin hyper-partisan. Democrats do not march in lockstep and there are light years separating the Blue Dogs from the liberal faction. A Democratic supermajority really promised us nothing. You righties really need to stop looking at the world through your narrow us v. them lens. People are considerably more complicated in the real world.
Now I am off to enjoy the ever-popular Daily Show.

I Used to Listen to AA All Day back when it started. Then they started to change things for the worse. Alan Colmes seemed like the same confrontational crap from the other side. They put 'Liionel' on and and his show is so stupid that it made my ears bleed. Although they soon went off in San Diego, I couldn't believe the crap that they put on the air later, "Montel" really?
I liked Malloy and agreed with him, but he was so over the top, that at times he was unlistenable. I liked Rhodes and had no problem with the comments that got her fired, but she was a prima dona that annoyingly needed to remind you that she had been in the air force whenever possible. I like Hartmann, but it seems like his show was an infomercial at times. I know he's got to make money, but what I heard on his show was just too blatant.
WTF was up with the crappy ads? These didn't sound any different than the ads that are targeted for the idiots on the right. Were some of the shows pushing gold?
I would love to be able to listen to a Liberal network, but is it necessary? We do have the internet, for now at least.

One ad in particular was pushing gold (and we rightly gave Glenn Beck a hard time because of that). Basically the problem is, Liberals aren't as gullible as conservatives, so therefore the advertising would not work as well on a liberal station.
You can tell that a syndicated show isn't doing well in any market by the lack of local advertising. If, during a show, you hear nothing but national ads, you can bet that the local station isn't paying for the programming- in fact, it's very likely that the syndicator is paying the local station.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
That pissed me off. I thought all those "make your dick bigger" pills are proven frauds. I was going to call in to AA and call them out on it actually but never got around to it. I also noticed that the hosts were saying the phone # over and over because nobody was calling in - desperate for callers. I figured there'd be a lack of enthusiasm after Obama's election (Hell - the local chapter of Drinking Liberally here in Fort Worth pretty much disbanded...another separate problem). I think it was for Enzyte but I'm not sure.
Where was the warning? I listen to Air America every day. While I can't say I liked all the new hosts, at least it was an alternative to NPR / BBC.
I was listening since the inception in 2004. I remember all the people who have come and gone.
Well, at least I won't have to sit through those crappy ads and that horrible horrible music that they used to play every top of the hour for five whole freaking minutes.
But seriously liberals, WTF? I mean, AA was supposed to be the ONE alternative to Rush/Hannity/Beck. And now it's gone. We were supposed to get the liberal message out there to the people. I am so hopeless today with the rush of bad news.
You can always stream Green 960 or one of the other internet friendly reality based radio stations.
