I'd like to see the insurance companies go away. Don't expect it, but...

Got the most ridiculous email from a friend yesterday, delineating all the horrible things "Obama" wants to do to you with this healthcare reform, including killing off your grandma. As if! Desparate people do desparate things and say ridicuous stuff.

in New York City this past Tuesday.

They presented ABC with 12,500 petitions protesting the fact that ABC has excluded any guests who represent Single-Payer Health Care from the debate, especially from the "Town Hall Forum On Health Care: Prescription for America" where President Obama's personal physician, Dr. David Scheiner, was "disinvited" after they discovered he supports a "Medicare for All" health care system in the U.S.

Here are the links:

There were several excellent speakers at this event, including Isabel Macdonald from F.A.I.R., Katie Robbins from Healthcare Now! who was recently arrested in D.C. with doctors and nurses at a Congressional Hearing and a doctor from Physicians for a National Health Program.

Thanks for watching and sharing...

I saw the first show ever on Hockey Night in Canada. I nominate Bluegal for the US ambassador to Canada. Bob and Doug are so Canadian and the good kind of rednecks too. Stubby bottles oh how I miss you.

Edwin's picture

I like their beer case furniture. I did that at university, until I needed the deposit money. Back then, each ssquare was worth $1.20. Student Gold.

Mac and cheese was 4 boxes for $0.99. Student Food.

Arctic Dude's picture

Way back in the cupboard is a box of KD and thats what I'll have tonight. Remember how empty the place looked after cashing in all the 24's of empties and how fast they filled up again. We should remember that lots of places are just getting started with recycling cans/bottles and we've been doing it for decades up here. In the Yukon its 5 cents/can 10 cents/beer bottle, 25 cents/hard booze 26oz. Gonna guess at 80%+ gets recycled.

Edwin's picture

I wish we still did our pop bottles (that's soda to Americans), and got rid of cans and plastic. Kids made a living making sure all those glass bottles returned to the corner stores (and re-used.)

far left loon >.<

Andy K's picture

Wisconsin, too, I think. And we wear tennis shoes, not sneakers.

As for the deposit law, I think it works great here. I remember what the shoulders of the highways used to look like before we passed ours. I don't think enterprising young'ns working the shoulder of the interstates is a good idea.

Edwin's picture

I call 'em running shoes. I thought sneakers was American. Guess it depends which state you hale from.

When I worked at the A&P, in high school, some Americans came in asking for cold soda. I didn't know what the hell they were talking about so I sent them to the baking aisle (cold soda/baking soda). When they found me again, they thought I had rocks in my head.

Back when we had our pop-bottle desposti laws, Canada was clean as a whistle. People were horrified to see even a scrap of paper on the ground. Total NO NO!!! The highways were clean. (It's not so clean anymore.)

far left loon >.<

Timjoebillybob's picture

Its pop, soda, soda pop and coke(for all kinds) ie I'd like a coke. What flavor?

Shoes. Sneakers, tennis shoes, gym shoes. Those are the ones I remember anyway.

Edwin's picture

The part of the country that calls all of it coke, sounds kinda strange to me. Pop is CORRECT ;), but I can dig soda and soda pop. I never drink the stuff (any flavour) so I guess I shouldn't care.

I'm not a health freak, it's just simple natural foods taste best to me. And I know how to cook. My drink of choice is water, and always has been, even as a kid.

[Except for whe it was beer (wobbly pop), whiskey, and gin, but those days are long over.]

far left loon >.<

Timjoebillybob's picture
Nah

I didn't forget them, but that term was reserved for a specific type of shoes. Unlike tennis shoes :) or gym shoes. Sorta like work boots, there is the basic type, then there is the steel toe and the metatarsal. Running shoes are a bit more specific.

we can't forget the Employee Free Choice Act......BIG business and corporations are taking advantage of this recession to lower wages/benefits. the cuts can't always be put on workers.

Timjoebillybob's picture
I'm

not a business owner, and I've worked union and non union jobs. And have a couple of very pro-union family members. All of them and myself are against card check for several reasons.
In that video she says 70-80% signs the cards the unions in. From what I've read its 51% and I've heard proposals for as low as 40%. That will lead to unions pressuring employees to sign, with the secret ballot they have no idea who voted for what so there can be no pressure. I've a buddy that went through that, just to get enough signatures to get a vote, they wen't to the local bars and harassed the employees, and even showed up at his door 3 times, last time was with 3 large union members. He told them they were trespassing and forbid them from returning. Then sent a letter to the union stating they were not welcome on his property and any further visits would be trespassing and he would prosecute.
Same with the company, they don't know how the individual employees voted. So there can be no recriminations.
She also states it should be up to the workers to have a vote. Under proposals that I've heard its the union that decides.

The medical costs of treating obesity-related diseases may have soared as high as $147 billion in 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday, as its new director set a fresh tone in favor of more aggressively attacking obesity.

The cost of treating obesity doubled over a decade, signaling the rising prevalence of excess weight and the toll it is taking on the health-care system. The medical costs of obesity were estimated to be $74 billion in 1998, according to a study by federal government researchers and RTI International, a nonprofit research institute in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The findings were released at a conference on obesity held by the CDC in Washington, D.C. The prevalence of obesity rose 37% between 1998 and 2006, and medical costs climbed to about 9.1% of all U.S. medical costs, the researchers said.

Obese people spent 42% more than people of normal weight on medical costs in 2006, a difference of $1,429, the study found. Prescription drugs accounted for much of the increase.

Salt, sugar- worse, high fructose corn syrup- and fats are used to cheaply flavor cheap food. You want healthy food, you're going to pay more for it. There's a reason that the poorer an American is, the more likely it is that s/he's obese.

You want to fight obesity, you can start by getting rid of corn subsidies. Then you can regulate portion sizes at restaurants.

Edwin's picture

Man your portions are HUMUNGOUS down there. It always freaks me out. (Maybe they're big in Canada now, too? Been a while.)

My stomach has NEVER been as big as my eyes...Well, except when I was playing high school soccer. I could eat a horse and still lose weight. I was 5'9 1/2", weighed 125 lbs. in the winter, but I would get down to about 110-115 lbs. during the season. All of my weight was in my legs, and it was all muscle.

Edwin's picture

I never stopped eating in high school.

I am the same height (but I say 5' 10"), and I was a svelte 160 lbs. That was a 30" waist (or maybe less). 110 lbs. is quite thin.

PS No one has ever challenged me on that extra 1/2" I added to my height ;)

PPS It does tell me you are a very honest person

There are people who eat at AYCE buffet's that have no business being there.
Sweets, carbohydrates, and starch, and for the most part the preparation and presentation would get a grade F.
I have a permanent boycott on all buffet's. Yes, some are damned good, but if you don't stuff yourself you feel cheated.........burph*!

hell with that. One of the local Chinese buffet is great. I get to eat a large variety of very tasty different dishes. A good Brazilian steakhouse, yes I overstuff, hell I train for that. But sweets, carbs and starch are at a very minimum there(virtually nonexistent for me).

Cheap corn is used to feed cattle. With artificially cheap corn, you can fatten up a head of cattle more and more quickly. That translates to more beef on the plate or bun. Also translates to more fat rendered into flavoring additives.

constituent's picture

I avoid both `taters and corn. I sweeten my own diluted fruit juice drinks with stevia, no need for sugared waters. After the economic depression hit, I bought a bunch of staples to see how well I could live on them, grains and beans, and I've thickened up in the middle. Controlled carbohydrate diet isn't the end of all joy. Back onto meats, eggs and whey powder for me.

I tried them staples. My tongue would either stick to the roof of my mouth or my lower jaw, and they hurt like hell.

it permitted agrarian society. For that I'm glad. I'm glad I don't have to eat it.

Andy K's picture

Edible fruit cracked the door. Pre-neolithic/agrarian humans probably discovered the secret of agriculture via something like apple trees.: Plant the seed, and when we wander back in a few years, we'll have food, ready to eat off the branch.

It had to have taken a long time after that to realize that if you ground up edible grasses that it was highly nutritious. Then came the realization that you can grow grasses much more quickly than you can grow a fruit-bearing tree. Then it was a matter of learning how to irrigate.

MountainMan23's picture

It's recently come to light that corn sweeteners contain high concentrations of mercury.

Evidently one step of the process of making the corn sweeteners involves floating one of the reagents atop a pool of mercury, and that reagent carries the mercury into the final product.

It's also apparently not necessary to use the mercury flotation technique but it is nonetheless widespread in the industry.

That book is a must read. When I heard about these guys being behind the construction of mega churches on army bases it was like........shit. It wouldnt take much, maybe a few well timed terrorist attacks and these players could consolidate with a group of insiders in the House and Senate there to "take control" and "keep us safe from terrorists", with the army to lock down martial law. Subject: Obama Health Bill: Those on Social Security - Mandatory Counseling on Asst. Suicide
On Page 425 of Obama's health care bill, the Federal Government will require EVERYONE who is on Social Security to undergo a counseling session every 5 years with the objective being that they will explain to them just how to end their own life earlier. Yes...They are going to push SUICIDE to cut medicare spending!!! And no, I am NOT SH-ing YOU! So those of you who voted for Obama have now put your own parents in dire straights...Congratulations!

Also, planned denial of medical care for seniors.
From: Thom
Yes, you ARE SH-ing us! Not even close. Suicide is not even mentioned.

This is a great example of how the conservatives take a small truth and turn it into a big lie. Section 1233 of the Obama Health Care Plan, called "Advanced Care Planning" should have been in place when my dad was diagnosed with a fatal illness in his late sixties because it assists doctors on how to talk to seniors about end of life issues. Do you have a living will? Do you know about having consent forms if you become incapable of making medical decisions for yourself? Do you have a power of attorney for health care (health care proxy)? Do you know what a "do not resuscitate" order is and is that what you want? Do you know what hospice care is? Do you know what palliative care is? Etc.

"Advanced Care Planning" explains what we will all confront as we reach the end of our lives, what the options are and how to do it. It is not how to end your life, but how to deal with end of life issues in a way that doesn't financially destroy you, doesn't wipe out your money you can give to your children and has options that help you avoid being in great pain. It advises you how to optimize the end of life experience.

Section 1233 looks entirely reasonable and appropriate to me.
