This post is a guest post by Morgan Downey. Morgan is author of the book ‘Oil 101’.
Exactly one hundred and fifty years ago, on August 27, 1859, the first commercial oil well in the US began producing. The subsequent petroleum bounty has enabled and defined modern civilization.
This post is a status update in honor of the day--on how far we have come and our immediate challenges.
pfft, the vid is USA only, what a rubbish. It's that i can't be arsed, otherwise i would get the video some other way. You can't restrict the internets.

It's the SNL parody ad with Sam Waterston, selling Old Glory Insurance, the insurance that pays off when old people are attacked by robots. The ad shows some older women who are discussing gangs and whatnot, when the conversation turns to robot attacks. Robots are depicted assaulting old people and eating their medicine (which robots use for fuel, ya know!).
The bit is from about 10 years ago. SNL yanks all clips down from YouTube, so Hulu is the only way you can see it.
agh nein fussball, das ist ja scheiße.

Klaatu isn't covered because he is operating under color of authority, for the Intergalactic Space Police. Were he to go rogue, and were you or your inheritors to be able to prove that, THEN you would be covered. A similar situation arises if you get shot up by an ED-209 on patrol, and refuse to relinquish your weapon within 30 seconds.
I read that Chucky wasn't covered under the Spiritual Possession exception, and that Teddy Ruxpin WAS covered, but only if his tape hadn't been hacked.
On the bright side, Cylon Centurions ARE covered... but NOT skin jobs, under the Cybernetic Organism exclusion. That one also denies coverage to those attacked by Terminators. Sucks.
If the Rock'em Sock'em Robots came to be possessed by extraplanar entities, they would no longer be "...under the sole control of electronic circuitry..." as outlined in section 27, part 3-a, also known as the "Chucky Exclusion". Although I believe this applies to remotely piloted vehicles as well.
Terminators ARE controlled solely by electronic brains, but are NOT "...composed entirely of non-living matter..." under section 987, part 65-g.
The pre-existing condition clause was what got Sarah Connor denied coverage for that nasty spike to the arm she took from the T-1000 because, while the 1000 series IS completely inorganic, she applied for the insurance fradulently because robots had already been chasing her for some time.
On the bright side, the families of the crew of Discovery I were paid out after a long court battle in which it was determined that, although HAL 9000 received periodic program updates from Huston, this did NOT qualify the spacecraft as a remotely piloted vehicle. Counsel for Old Glory had at first argued that the crew was indispensable to the running of the spacecraft and that the Discovery I was therefore exempt under the Cyborg clause, but subsequent testimony from Dr. Chandra to the effect that HAL 9000 was perfectly capable of running the spacecraft on his own caused them to adopt a different strategy later in the trial.
That neighbor and his friend hook the Rock'em Sock'em Robots to their computer- like in Weird Science- and return them to me without letting me know that they have modified my Rock'em Sock'em Robots. My Rock'em Sock'em Robots climb from their ring in the middle of the night, knock my block off then fuel up on my medication. Surely I must be covered then.
But you would have to expect that counsel for Old Glory would call Kelly LeBrock as an expert witness in order to cast doubt on the inorganic nature of the modified Rock'em Sock'em Robots, since the Government mainframe your neighbors are tapping into is capable of creating life.
Nearly 8 in 10 Americans support a federal health insurance plan for those who can't afford or can't get private insurance, but only 37 percent define "public option" correctly, a new national poll found.
The majority of people polled — 86 percent — say insurance should be available to everyone regardless of health history.
I have no interest in everyone getting insurance. I want everyone to get HEALTH CARE. Insurance has nothing to do with it. They're just vampires sucking off the population's arteries.
SINGLE PAYER is the only way this will ever work. Anything else is just throwing our money away.
Landrieu: Under "Very Few, If Any" Circumstances Would I Support A Public Option
Brian Beutler | August 27, 2009, 9:00AM
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Speaking before what was described as a friendly crowd at the Monroe Chamber of Commerce yesterday, Sen. Mary Landrieu said she was opposed to much of the Democrats' legislative agenda.
Asked under what circumstances she would support a public option, Landrieu responded, "[v]ery few, if any. I'd prefer a private market-based approach to any health care reform that would extend coverage," according to the Monroe News Star.
"I'd like to cover everyone -- that would be the moral thing to do -- but it would be immoral to bankrupt the country while doing so," Landrieu said. The public option as currently conceived is expected to be a deficit reducer.
Landrieu also said she'd continue her long history of opposition to a cap and trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "I'm not supporting that approach, but I'm open to hear modifications," she said.
Landrieu has also balked at the idea that she and other Democrats should be expected to oppose filibusters as a procedural matter. "I'm going to keep an open mind, but I am not committing to any procedural straitjackets one way or another," she said in July.
Lakewood Wa town hall with Adam Smith, I stepped ver a rail and climbed down. One of the newsmen there said he hoped I had health insurance and I said that I had the best, medicare. Hey guys and girls, I was hoping someone out there had some videos of the town hall there and would share with us. The news was very brief with their reports. We need each other to report on the positive town halls.
You've seen them before...the number of automatons who listen to and believe everything they hear on Faux News, Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck....the only REAL robot insurance is to CALL THESE IDIOTS OUT on all their BS.
Barney Frank has done it...so have others.
Article related to a cover story from Time called something like "The Price of Cheap Food". Sanford throws members of his own party under the bus for daring to suggest that he be held accountable for his indiscretions. The FDIC is broke. That hasn't been the case since the last time Bush I was in office. The Prop. 8 lobbyists have a new target: Iowa. Bush kept us so "safe" after 9/11 that even Bernanke's personal info ends up being used in an ID crime ring. The overturning of the Florida gay marriage ban gets appealed. Something to give us a brief sigh of relief: Japanese cars got recalled for once. Unfortunately, some blinds also got recalled, due to accidental deaths of children. We're now #28 in Internet connection speeds. Could unemployment actually be as high as 20 percent? A Fed official believes we're at least in the 16% range. Our we in a new Cold War with Venezuela? A soccer star gets seated during Ramadan. The Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. The U.N. prematurely declares a cease-fire on the Sudan thing. The CDC takes a page from the Hitchhiker's Guide and says "Don't Panic" over swine flu. Almost 4,000 stimulus checks went to prisoners. The only way for Arnie to agree on higher taxes was to over-tax the residents who can't afford the increases. An appeals court upheld a multi-million lawsuit against the feds in which the FBI jailed innocent people, in order to take down the mob. Lamebitch has the gall to argue that the Dems are politicizing Ted's death.
McCan't doesn't have to deal with armed protesters at his town-hall meeting. Japan's unemployment sets a record. Global warming now hits Cali near the sea. Looks like feds are hoping to use the failed war-on-drug tactics to scare Americans off cigs.
Give me a break. Southern California burns EVERY YEAR.
I mean it. Every fucking year I hear this crap, as if it never happens, ever. It happens like CLOCKWORK. Summer comes, the Santa Anas hit, and the canyons burn. It's got NOTHING to do with global warming.
You know how California got its name? When the Spanish explorers got here, they saw the rolling golden hills and named the area after Queen Califia, a character in a 16-century tale from Spain, who ruled over a land of gold. WHY were those hills golden? BECAUSE OF THE DRY GRASS. Which even then BURNED EVERY YEAR. Hell, the Natives here used to fire the hills on purpose to cut down on the burning.
So let's not go blaming the fires on global warming. They're most likely caused by some asshat being careless, as they are EVERY FUCKING YEAR.
Nope. My dad (who is from Spain) told me about it years ago, and not being the most trusting soul, I went and looked it up. Lo and behond, he was right. Our state was named after a character in an adventure story. Ya learn something new every day!
I live in Florida. I call it the schizophrenic or bi-polar state because of the extremes I see here. Maybe it is a multi-personality disorder-with all the personalities coming out at once, I can't be sure.
For example, parts of the state are popular "gay meccas"-but other areas do things like try to ban libraries from stocking books that so much as mention homosexuality or conduct "inspections" and even raids on gay-owned businesses. If there weren't so many strip clubs, nudie bars, and adult businesses, we wouldn't need so many churches.
But I digress-what wound me up today is a follow up to Miami trial court ruling that banning same-sex couples from adopting is unconstitutional.
Two Miami courtrooms, two cases, one very interesting juxtaposition of Florida law:
In criminal court, prosecutors dropped a child abuse case against a man named Loscar Rodriguez, a father, who decided that a good belt lashing would teach his 8 year old son to get better grades. Did the boy get better grades? Not sure, but he did get raised welts on his leg and backside, bruises big and purple enough to alarm a teacher, and a butt that hurt him to sit upon.
At the same time, across town at the District Court of Appeals, a man named Frank Gill fought to protect his status as the father of two boys he first fostered then adopted. He and his partner had taken in the two young brothers who had known no other healthy family, and were eventually called exemplary fathers and family, but the state is appealing the adoption because Gill is gay.
The outcome of these two cases defies logic:
Florida law bans gay people from adopting children. But it protects the right to beat a child with an object until he/she is black and blue.
Words fail me-I cannot even describe how stupid this is.
Americans like Barry taking a stand on global warming. Tricky Dick was hoping to Swiftboat Ted:
Nixon made clear that the Secret Service protection afforded Kennedy before the 1972 election would be rescinded after. Then, said the president, "If he gets shot, it's too damn bad." His aides disdainfully referred to Kennedy supporters as "super swinger jet set types."
Some things are only to be found on Hulu. That's why this clip was posted. If you can find it somewhere else, please post the link in comments so C&L will know.

Jenkins, a Topeka Republican in her first term in Congress, shared thoughts about the GOP's political future during an Aug. 19 forum at Fisher Community Center in the northeast Kansas community of Hiawatha. "Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," Jenkins said to the crowd.

Daily Kos: Name the public option, not the bill, after Kennedy - http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/26/77286...
The temptation to name the health care reform bill after fallen health care champion Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) is as understandable as it is overwhelming. But with the bill currently still at the mercy of players who are, shall we say, not as clearly dedicated to a product that offers the kind of help Kennedy envisioned, I suggest that we not offer them the opportunity to attach his name to anything less than a bill he would have fought for.
So while it's undoubtedly in that spirit that the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and others have begun their drive to honor Kennedy's memory by demanding that the HELP Committee's bill be passed and named after him, I suggest that it serves us and the Senator's memory better if our essential element -- a strong public option -- carries his name instead.

150 years to use one half of the 2 trillions barrels that the earth gave us. Much was AND is still being squandered.
It was the easy half. The second half will be a different story and it won't take 150 years. At present consumption it will 30 years.
Then it will be gone, but considering climate change, not forgotten.
When is peak water? (potable that is)

Gone, but not forgotten.
Peak Water .. depends where you live on the planet ..
Peak Water was yesterday, or the day before, in southern Iraq, for instance.
And northern Mexico is parched, salinity backing up into the aquifer due to all the water the US drains from the Colorado River.
And parts of the horn of Africa ..
And the San Joaquin Valley in California ..
And those are just the places I've seen in the news recently ..

Klaatu isn't covered because he is operating under color of authority, for the Intergalactic Space Police. Were he to go rogue, and were you or your inheritors to be able to prove that, THEN you would be covered. Gort is robot. Klaatu flesh and bone humanoid played by robot-like Keanu. Understandable mistake.
i wish he would cease his need to give troofers a voice on his program
The first time someone dropped in a Mossad/Israel theory, you'd be doing major damage to your radio.
Does that also cover androids, cyborgs, and remotely piloted vehicles? Does it include a Klaatu Exclusion? What about Furbies?
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Do they have hellfire rockets?
I read that Chucky wasn't covered under the Spiritual Possession exception, and that Teddy Ruxpin WAS covered, but only if his tape hadn't been hacked.
On the bright side, Cylon Centurions ARE covered... but NOT skin jobs, under the Cybernetic Organism exclusion. That one also denies coverage to those attacked by Terminators. Sucks.
If I was to be attacked by my suddenly-animated Rock'em Sock'em Robots, would I be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition?
Watching right now, good stuff.

That's the Conan O'Brien robot!
"Persons denying the existence of robots may be robots themselves."
Hmm. 'reminds me of something. Something about town hall "terrorists" saying that they aren't, or maybe proud that they are?

You've seen them before...the number of automatons who listen to and believe everything they hear on Faux News, Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck....the only REAL robot insurance is to CALL THESE IDIOTS OUT on all their BS.
Barney Frank has done it...so have others.
And you don't even need to pay a premium for it.
Just use your heads...unlike the robots.
Just sayin'

Sanford throws members of his own party under the bus for daring to suggest that he be held accountable for his indiscretions. The FDIC is broke. That hasn't been the case since the last time Bush I was in office. The Prop. 8 lobbyists have a new target: Iowa.
/fed-up rant
doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you!
I always wondered if it had anything to do with Kali?
It's like there's an Indian Goddess named Tara, as well as a Tara in Ireland where the Red Hand army and capital of King Conchobar resides in Ulster.
Nope. My dad (who is from Spain) told me about it years ago, and not being the most trusting soul, I went and looked it up. Lo and behond, he was right. Our state was named after a character in an adventure story. Ya learn something new every day!
neither does the drought
Where do you live? I live here in Southern California, as I have for nearly 50 YEARS. These fires have been happening MY WHOLE LIFE.
So how about you go troll some other thread where you might possibly KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT? KTHXBI
Another good one, T.
The outcome of these two cases defies logic:
Words fail me-I cannot even describe how stupid this is.
H/T Milberg's Musings
The ACLU is involved in the case for Gill, that page is here.
Bright side-it took less than a year for the Appeals Court to hear the case.
its that simple
the adoption thing really bugs me
when i worked in foster care, one of our best parents were a gay couple
these guys did everything for the kids
seen the Jaycee lee durgard ( sp ) case coming out of calif. , truly disgusting , another PTL nut bag .
